The "Remarkable Ranges" snow covered mountains of New Zealand's South Island are indeed "remarkable" - surely the departure to the south is one of the most spectacular flights in the world. Again Informative commentary accompanied by some excellent video footage makes for a great trip report. Well done Paul!
I think any flight under 1 hour should have free water, tea and coffee. A flight between 1 and 3 hours should have free "lite" meals (sandwiches, apple, banana, cookie and a drink). Any flight over 3 hours should have free full meals every 4 hours after the first service. I think this should be an industry standard for all but low cost airlines. Paying for the IFE is just rude. The new CEO for Air NZ joined in 2020 from his position at Walmart. We all feared he would bring cost cutting measures that would ruin Air NZ reputation as a good value friendly airline. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to vent Paul.
I think it was unfair to not mention that Paul purchased a “Seat only” or a “Seat and bag” gate and had opted to not buy the “Works” fare which includes meals and entertainment. The difference in fare is approx. $30. The fare structure is designed to allow the passenger to choose what fare suits their needs. Seats to Suit is the marketing name. He complained about no food and having to pay for movies when that was his choice to buy the cheaper fares.
Beautiful video of the departure. Looked like you climbed out at a good rate for terrain clearance with the mountains. Nice arrival at YSSY. Always enjoy your trip reports.
Wonderful view out of the window.. Thank you very much, Paul, for sharing your great documentary video of your flight with us. I have enjoyed each second.
When you think about our usual timeframes between meals say 8 breakfast, 12 lunch and 6 tea (most of us are usually within an our or two either side), most of us wouldn’t go beyond 6 hours between meals if we take 3 meals a day therefore it makes sense that flights around 6 hours and beyond have hot/cold meals included (could be a safety issue for some if pax were forced to pay extra) and for those flights that are less than 5 hours meal options are extra given people can have a much wider range of choices at either end and for cheaper.
Fabulous views over the mountains! I think the wired earbuds are definitely a lot better than the ultra budget type wired headphones airlines used to use. I agree with you about having to pay for the IFE, but being able to view the tv shows free of charge kept me entertained on Air NZ trans-Tasman flights a few months ago.
Another good review. Whenever I fly Air NZ across the Tasman i just opt for the works and get the full inclusive economy experience. The price between seat and bag and works is normally not that much especially if you end up buying a sandwich on board anyway. Again love the video, I flew out of Queenstown last year and your take off footage got me in feels.
just for everyone’s information, this sort of ‘low cost’ stuff is only on trans tasman and flights to pacific islands. Long haul flights have meals for free and full ife access at no extra cost.
@@kiribetio123well jetstar let’s you buy bundles or everything individually. they don’t have ife on any flight to new zealand and have much fewer flights within new zealand compared to air nz. it more or less depends on what you want to pay for

I'm currently in Wellington on holiday & I'll be flying back to Australia tomorrow but when I flew to Auckland on the 18th I thought the airport looked really cool.
Stunning footage here Paul. 😍 In defence of AirNZ, there is an option when you book your tickets to pay $NZD25 more per flight (trans Tasman) to get open access tv and movies as well as including the more usual food/beverage service. I guess it depends whether you feel you get $25 value from the food and movies. As you say, for a longer flight, probably, but maybe not so much for a shorter flight, especially if you can pre-load in the lounge 😆 Thank you for sharing your flight. Hard to beat that takeoff and westward turn.
It’s a multi fare route, so you only have to pay for food and entertainment if you’re a travelling on a seat only or seat and bag ticket, if you’re travelling on a works or works deluxe ticket you receive complimentary meal and bar device as well as the full selection of inflight entertainment, so it’s all up to the customer at the time of booking what service and entertainment access they receive onboard. Maybe a review on the full product would be good instead of the cheapest fare.
I take your point, although that's what low cost carriers do. The fare is just the seat and then you pay extra for everything else. It's sad to see legacy airlines like Air NZ going down that pathway. We all need to look at British Airways who have thoroughly destroyed their reputation. :(
I think the new-ish CEO has been talking about removing the seat and seat+bag fares. And just returning to full economy. Admittedly those fares are only available on the trans Tasman and pacific islands routes. But I do believe they’re all on the way out eventually.
@kelvin It's a review. I'm meant to review it. I'm comparing it with other full service airlines that cost a similar price, and QF/VA do include more. I guess my mistake was that I should be comparing it to Jetstar and Air Asia X who charge for food and IFE.
Hi Paul I also flew Air New Zealand on the A320 NEO from MEL to AKL return last week and I agree with what you say in this video, I would strongly recommend to get some noise cancelling head phones, I was a tad disappointed by the In flight entertainment, I did pay extra for extra leg room and I think it was worth it.

Where else do you get great vistas of Port Kembla steelworks or the coal loader at the docks , you may even get the chance of flying through a gas plume if lucky . You can keep your mountains , I don’t think they’re very remarkable at all .
Another interesting video as always Paul! I enjoy your combination of consumer advice and avgeekery. That Jetstar A320 looked awfully close to the mountain at the start?!

There’s literally 3 different fares to choose from for each flight clearly labelled Seat only, Seat and Bag and The Works (used to be a forth Works Deluxe where you got a empty seat next to you)

That small amount of clearance looks like it would be a necessity for the pilots to land perfectly wings level in windy conditions. shocking that Air NZ aren't providing free in flight movies now or food on an international flight. Even on short haul domestic flights they give you a biscuit and a hot drink...I used to love flying Air NZ but have found while their fleet of planes may be slowly improving the in flight service is slipping
Paul….You were on a Seat and Bag which is just that. If you buy a Works ticket you get everything and on Long Haul flights it’s all included. Please know the product. Doesn't this highlight the problem, though? The different tickets are confusing. They're a low cost carrier trans-tasman except flights to Perth. Other full service airlines provide a seat, food, luggage and IFE with every ticket. The tickets were not cheap at all so it's not like the customers are benefiting.
When is air NZ ever act as a flagship carrier for Tasman flights? Like I understand the need to make a profit, but at this point, I rather fly jetstar, and if I want luggage which I usually do, I’ll just pick Qantas, and Air nz prices are never that competitive to begin with
You can choose to pay for full service economy and get meal, drinks, movies included. Or you can choose to save some money if you don't want those options. To choose the cheap option, then complain about it, seems a tad unfair! It's very clearly labeled when booking.
But those things are included on the cheapest fair with other full service airlines. If Qantas or Virgin wanted me to pay for the Flexible fare to get food and a TV screen, then I'd accept that's the norm, but it's not. The only other airlines that make you pay extra are low cost carriers such as Jetstar and I think Air Asia X. And that's my point. It's sad that NZ (might be?) moving down the low cost carrier route.
Paying for entertainment is akin to what Scoot does, which is charge you for the power outlets at your seat. These are features that already come with the aircraft. Good video. 🙌 Yes, that has to be one of the most stunning departures in the world. I got similar but different views when I flew from Queenstown to Auckland last year … was particularly cool to see Mount Cook: th-cam.com/video/VOtmCQF1SD8/w-d-xo.html 😍
Air NZ is super greedy at the moment and probably trying to claw back losses from Covid times, but in their defence, you must've booked the seat+bag fare. Food and movies are included if you pay on average $20 more, which sounds like about what you spent on buying food and movies onboard.
yeah you're right on both points. I think it's pretty cheap from ANZ and even the most basic ticket should be all-inclusive. As anyone who has flown BA recently will know that it's a total zoo finding overhead luggage space now that checked luggage isn't included. It devalues the whole experience. It's expected from low cost carriers like Jetstar or Ryan air. Not iconic brands like Air NZ!
#345👍😀Sending you through security twice is just a stupid waste of both your time and security workers doing their job twice!! Beurocrats must run things in New Zealand😤🤣🃏 Full service airlines ended with government subsidies so if you were living back then enjoy reminiscing. They are never coming back either are the days of no security and of traveling in your Sunday best clothing. I think this 21st century stuff is perfect for slobs and people who can't function w/o their smart phone!! No individual air on the B-777?!😡 I miss the clean wing of the 727 or DC-9 and the quiet engines in back!! Faster too!
Yep, NZ has some strange anomalies to do with airport security screening. In the USA their TSA screens all passengers regardless of the aircraft size. In NZ our wonderful leaders think that this would be a wasteful extravagance😂😂
First thing is. You won’t see full service airlines surface again because all airlines realise the profits involved with offering little to no catering. Don’t believe a word re it making it better for pax to give them lower fares and a choice, it dosent. Now you where very condescending re the pax checking in not using the machines, did you for one second think many don’t like using the machines? They are quite capable of using them perhaps more than you but don’t want to turn up one day and just see a bank of machines and no staff.. because numb nuts that’s what will happen if everyone uses the machines instead of going to a member of airline staff fully trained to help, talk and iron out any problems you may have… that’s why you will see people of all ages queuing up at supermarket check out rather than a machine. Not of lack of intelligence as you seem to suggest but because they prefer a human to machine.

I’m also excited to try the A320 & A321 neo’s of Frontier Airlines this week as I’ll be heading to Orlando FL and I’ll also make a trip report about it so keep an eye out! 😊 Also I know you’re subscribed to my channel but I’d appreciate if you’d possibly show my channel on the channel’s section of your channel page… 🎉
Cheers 🥂
Cheers my friend
Good video. 🙌 Yes, that has to be one of the most stunning departures in the world. I got similar but different views when I flew from Queenstown to Auckland last year … was particularly cool to see Mount Cook: th-cam.com/video/VOtmCQF1SD8/w-d-xo.html 😍
Thnx mate! Why are you up at this time of the morning!? 😂
@@PaulStewartAviation Can’t sleep. 😢
😢😢
Views are not plane specific.
I would like to have some fish and chips.
and some plankton!
Air NZ is super greedy at the moment and probably trying to claw back losses from Covid times, but in their defence, you must've booked the seat+bag fare. Food and movies are included if you pay on average $20 more, which sounds like about what you spent on buying food and movies onboard.
Great footage of Fiordland, btw. It is a beautiful airport to arrive into or depart from!
yeah you're right on both points.
Bought a sandwich before going to the airport, for my return flight to Brisbane. Cheaper
“There’s no larger power plugs” well the longest domestic flight is only 2 hours so im sure people will manage.😂
It’s 3hrs between NZ and the east coast of Australia :)

Ok
Air NZ has 2 issues:
1) it holds a monopoly on flights to and from NZ
2) the safety videos are unbearable
Wollongong International 😂
Why that isnfucking beautiful!
In NZ our wonderful leaders think that this would be a wasteful extravagance😂😂
lol "we are better at rugby"
:)
And breath 😂
