Your comments on Chris' TH-cam channel are spot on. Even my wife and kids dig watching his TH-cam channel. Cool music and funny voiceover. Skills for sure.
I really like the aesthetic of this. Those plywood joints of the frame are going to be super sturdy, too. Gives me a couple ideas to throw into other projects. Plywood seems to be a recurring theme lately..
Subscribed because of this video. I watch Chris's videos religiously, and I thought this was a great video. I may actually attempt to build this. I often wonder about the glue and chemicals in plywood, and whether or not it would be healthy to live with/sleep on. Great project.
Awesome build!!! Congrats on the news Johnny! Sad to see you go from the podcast but I give you massive respect for knowing your limits. Fatherhood is going to bring so many challenges around but it will also inspire your woodworking and all other aspects of your life as well, I've found. Keep it up!
+Aaron Wasielewski thanks a lot! It was definitely a tough call to leave the show but I felt like it was the right choice. I think having a kid is going to change me for the better, make me a more generous, flexible person. Can’t wait!
Use a car clamp! Put the work against the back wall of the garage, roll your car onto a 2x4 on the other side of the work. Then reverse your clamps and push the work against the wall. Great videos guys
Nice collaboration with Chris and a really cool bed! At 0:43 I notice a flicker in the image maybe it is because of the low light or high speed. But lately, my brand new Nikon has the same kind of flicker but much worse. Not always but in different situations. I just wanted to ask if you have that problem or know the solution.
Looks to me like it was LED lighting causing this. I get the same when using only LED lighting. The pulse-width modulation (PWM) of LEDs causes this. Slower shutter speeds will make it more noticeable too. @Erik did it -- the solution is just different lighting or adding lighting in addition to the LEDs. Increasing the shutter speed can help too. It is most noticeable (for me at least) in low-light situations where the only lighting is from an LED source, and I have to shoot at a low shutter speed to get adequate exposure.
+Modustrial Maker I’m pretty sure the lighting in Chris’ shop is fluorescent, but I could be wrong. I’ve had the same flickering issue with LEDs before, happens in my shop. Seems like shutter speed is the biggest culprit.
Looks great. I want one like this. I was wondering why not use the router to cut the long holes in headboard and leave it as one piece. Too hard to keep it straight across the whole width?
A quick question; at 2:17 he's cross cutting along side the fence. Isn't that super dangerous because it can bind? or is there a certain length the board can be before you should remove the fence and push it through freely?
Mathew, it's definitely not the safest cut, but you definitely don't want to remove the fence and cut it freely. Kickback happens when pieces twist usually, so freehand cutting is a big no-no. The best solution would have been a large crosscut sled or to use a circular saw/track saw.
When he walked around the bed in the beginning I lost it! 😂😂😂😂😂😂 I screamed out THAT BOY STUPID!!!! Not in a bad way but in a funny way. So I subscribed. I guess I can learn some stuff and have a few laughs....
Awesome idea. Looks greatThough I would put the switches closer to the mattress so you can turn them off/on while in bed. Also I think the lights should be totally left right so one person can read and the other sleep.
Great news about you new arrival. But really sorry you are leaving your podcast as zach said your boots are big ones to fill. If it means more content like this then all will be well, enjoy the time before your arrival😀
Great collaboration! It would be cool to run LEDs around the overhang of the entire bed frame and nightstands, too. Illuminate the floor all the way around!
Great project idea and videos, thanks. I bought the plans and scaled up the dimensions from a standard Full mattress (54" x 75") up to a standard Queen (60" x 80"). But, after cutting all the planks, I realize that the design is actually a bit too short for a standard Full, and as a result, my side boards are a little too short to fit my existing Queen mattress (it will probably just barely fit, but with no clearance for sheet access at the head or foot). After studying the Sketchup, I realize that you built it around a 74" long mattress, which is 1" shorter than a standard. I'm sure that there's some variation in normal mattress lengths, but I would suggest that your plans should be based on the standard size (and yes, I should have drawn it all out and measured my mattress before cutting... lesson learned) Now I'm debating between cutting 1" from the footboards (which may or may not mess up the symmetry), or else shifting the side rails out by an inch or two, and adding a cosmetic spacer at the foot. Neither is ideal, but the Purebond plywood is too expensive to justify re-cutting all the side planks. I'll make it work, but figured I should point it out.
My jaw dropped again watching this. Great design and build. This got me thinking and designing, as any great build does. I'm wondering if you could build this in reverse from a single sheet, and just use a router with bottom cleaning bit to route out the slots in a sheet of plywood. I'm thinking if you clamped a stop piece so you could make a few passes to the same point for each slot, and attached a router edge guide to make sure you cut straight, you could just make a few passes to cut out each slot. It would be a bit of work, but maybe less than cutting everything up, using the dominos, and clamping it back together?
You definitely could, and that was actually the original plan (to do it with the X-Carve). We ran into some technical issues and time constraints, so we went with the quick and dirty method.
7 sheets in total. Definitely a lot of plywood! You could probably scale the sides of the rails to use less material, but I dig the beefy, low slung look.
pipe clamps....cheap....and adjustable lengths up to 10 feet using a full length of pipe. Home Depot will cut the pipe and thread it for you for free in most cases
Probably could have, but we were in a time crunch and this went pretty quick. We only had one shot at it, and the router sometimes has a mind of its own. Thanks!
This is my first time seeing one of your videos. My question is, do you sell these projects? If so, how much? That's a lot of plywood. Just wanted to see what the profit would be after materials. Loved this project btw.
Thanks Sean! I do sell some of my projects, but Chris and I just built this one for fun. If I were to sell something like this, I'd probably be at $1,400 or so, which would easily cover the material cost and give me a good margin.
Unsubscribing for Chris! Can only be subscribed to one woodworking youtuber, amirite? Kidding~~ ;) Both are awesome! And get hands dirty.. and i like to make stuff.. and diy creators.. and homemade modern...
Killer collaboration ! Love that headboard Johnny! It's really made from one sheet of plywood?? Is Chris really as tall as he seems lol :) #duckwalk #1000Squats
Nice but a lot of waste on the bed base, you could have cut say 3” strips then a wider section on top and packed out underneath where you can’t see it. Not trolling, just an idea, nice work 👍🏼
Why have the 2 switches for the lights? Seems like an odd choice. You could have spliced them together and put the whole thing on a dimmer. I think the headboard looks pretty cool but the backside is very sloppy with the lighting and disappointing. Love your videos though!
+James Helms I wanted the lighting to be independently controlled on each half of the bed. If only one person is in bed, they can still turn on enough light to illuminate the whole headboard, but if two people are in bed, they can either get a little more light or just have one person control it. The wiring could have certainly been tidied up, but this was really just a prototype, not for a client.
Crafted Workshop , thanks for the reply Johnny! I worked for years as a theatrical electrician so I like my LED lights to be nice and pretty. I counter your dual switch idea with dual dimmers! Enjoy your videos, keep up the good work!
Awesome! I'd love to buy the plan to build it but your platform bed design is for a full and I need it for queen... How would I make the adjustments or what do I do differently?

Serious power squat in the beginning - looks awesome!
Hah, thanks Zach!

Yes I agree he popped up in my reccomendation a few days ago and now I'm just watching and loving wood word videos
Johnny, Thanks for introducing me to Chris's channel. You are right he does a great job. Loved the squat crawl at the beginning. LOL.
Glad to make the introduction, Gary! He's great. And that squat crawl was hilarious.
I like the randomness of the spacers too. Good call on that one.
Thanks Bruce!
Cool how the same build can have 2 different design styles in editing 👌
Yea, for sure. Chris and I's videos are similar in some ways but much different in others.
Great touch with the star wars pez dispenser. Came out awesome!
Hah, had to throw that in there. Classic FourEyes prop. Thanks!
I really like the aesthetic of this. Those plywood joints of the frame are going to be super sturdy, too. Gives me a couple ideas to throw into other projects. Plywood seems to be a recurring theme lately..
Thanks! I'm definitely loving plywood these days, it's a super versatile material.
Impressive work making plywood look so elegant.
+Huy Le thanks!
That squat walk was impressive. Love the look of the lights behind the headboard.
Thanks Brian! The lights honestly turned out way better than I expected. They look awesome in person.
That headboard looks great!! simple and it really does have a Japanese feel to it.
Thanks, glad you dig it!
youre not kidding when you say that Chris sets the bar high!
Yup, he's one of the best!
watched both videos , awesome build , two of my best builders .
Thanks man, glad you enjoyed them!
Subscribed because of this video. I watch Chris's videos religiously, and I thought this was a great video. I may actually attempt to build this. I often wonder about the glue and chemicals in plywood, and whether or not it would be healthy to live with/sleep on. Great project.
Thanks! Purebond is actually formaldehyde free and uses soy-based glues. That's one of the big reasons I use it for my furniture builds.
Awesome collaboration style. I like the "part 1/part 2" style
Thanks, glad you liked it!
Awesome Johnny! I really dig your voiceover style on this one, gives us a glimpse into your personality--nice work!
Thanks man! I agree, this was one of my favorite voiceovers for me, don't get to wax poetic too often.
Great build guys!!
Thanks Alex!
Yes . I like Chris's video
Yes I’ve been waiting for a collab with Chris!!!
Nice, was a great time building with him!
Just like Humpty Dumpty... awesome build as usual, nice work man.
Hah, thanks man!
Crouching tiger, sitting dragon 😂. Best colab so far to me. Thanks for the videos fellas.
Thanks Janie, glad you enjoyed it!
Sweet collaboration you guys did a awesome job looks fantastic.
Thanks Thom!

Interesting, I'll have to give that a shot sometime! Thanks!
Two of my favorite woodworkers!!! Love it!! 💓
Thanks Hannah!
Looks good. I like the exposed ply wood,
Thanks, me too!
Bedside PEZ dispenser, solid addition.
+Andy Cress hah, it was a nod to one of Chris’ other videos featuring the same PEZ dispenser.
watched both videos , awesome bed , love it.
Thanks man!
Very very good!!!! Spain
+Eloy Workshop thanks!
I realize this was made a while ago, but are the drawings still available? Thank you for an awesome idea and execution!
Awesome collaboration! 👍👊
Thanks Fred!
Crab people.
Hah!
Neat! Chris is a hilarious wood-nerd
Yes he is!

But lately, my brand new Nikon has the same kind of flicker but much worse. Not always but in different situations. I just wanted to ask if you have that problem or know the solution.
Thanks! I think the flicker has to do with the fluorescent lighting and the shutter speed I was using on that shot.

Crafted Workshop interesting, then you got me....not sure why florescents would do that.
This is a awesome project great job guys. The beginning was so funny I laughed out loud and woke up my 10 month old babs. Brilliant
Hah, that's awesome man! Thanks.
Love this bed!! Absolutely my dream bed!❤!!❤! You guys made a great team!!

Thanks Andrew! While sad to leave the podcast, more time will certainly mean better and more frequent videos.
Great collaboration! It would be cool to run LEDs around the overhang of the entire bed frame and nightstands, too. Illuminate the floor all the way around!
That would definitely be cool, Brandon! Glenn from DIY Creators did something similar, looked awesome.

what’s dimensions did you use for a queen mattress?
Came here from Chris Channel :) and subscribed :) :)
Thanks! Welcome.
My jaw dropped again watching this. Great design and build.

p.s. The duck walk at the beginning is classic :)
You definitely could, and that was actually the original plan (to do it with the X-Carve). We ran into some technical issues and time constraints, so we went with the quick and dirty method.
Hah, Chris is hilarious.
great build. how did you get your LED tape to make 90 degree turn? I didnt see connection clamps or soldering. did you just fold the tape?
+John Howell yup, these strips didn’t have the thick rubber that I’ve seen on most of them, so I was able to bend them easily.
Absolutely awesome squat walk Chris! Great video Johnny!! Thinking about doing something similar for my daughter.
Hah, thanks Adrian!
Its gorgeous :)♥
Thanks!
Crafted Workshop your welcome
I would love too buy the bed platform
I'm wondering how you are preventing the bed base from scratching the floor?? Did you place anything on the bottom?
+John Fabiani felt pads are my go-to for that.
Great video its look super do you where can you find 1" inch plywood...
Thanks! Not sure, never used 1” plywood.
Nice
genius
I noticed the headboard is flimsy .. is it so yours ?
What kind of legs can I add to the bed to make it taller?
Wow did not expect the method of the headboard. It fooled me, thought it was a fully routed sheet.
+Cyberneticwarmachine that was the goal!
Man, those reddit comments are BRUTAL today. Such a bummer. Nice work guys!
No kidding! Oh well, still getting those sweet, sweet views, hah.
haha right on!
Star Wars sand racer 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Hah, good eye!
Oh nooooo, now you got Chris squatting. What is this world coming to? Good stuff Johnny.
+unico260 hah, thanks man!
Shoutout to the stormtrooper PEZ dispenser!
+Skyler Hair oh yea!
Great collaboration. If we ever collab I will just stand. I don't know if I could get back up from that position. :)
Hah. Thanks man!
Do the plans also include metric measurements?
They don't, sorry! I wouldn't know the standard lumber sizes in metric, so it'd be hard to do the conversion.
How many sheets of Plywood did you need for this project?
7 sheets in total. Definitely a lot of plywood! You could probably scale the sides of the rails to use less material, but I dig the beefy, low slung look.
pipe clamps....cheap....and adjustable lengths up to 10 feet using a full length of pipe. Home Depot will cut the pipe and thread it for you for free in most cases
Yup, definitely would have been a good option!
So when watching you cut then glue all the blocks, I thought why not just route them? Good build.
+Thistledown Woodcraft yup, definitely could have!
Same thoughts - routing would be simpler and quicker
That’s definitely it!
Great work! Seems like you could've saved yourselves some grief by just routing the slats out from a solid piece of plywood though.
Probably could have, but we were in a time crunch and this went pretty quick. We only had one shot at it, and the router sometimes has a mind of its own. Thanks!
Crafted Workshop Fair enough. It looks so great I'm honestly thinking about stealing the idea.
+SkewToob go for it! We’ve got plans available too.
Hey looks like I'm early! #Notificationsquad
Nice, thanks for that!
The double squat! LOL
Hah!
How many sheets of plywood did you use??
I think it ended up at 7 sheets.
Nailed it! XD
Hah, thanks man!
Oh yea double crouch. "crouching with friends"
Hah, nice meeting you this weekend man!
Squatting Slavs
look at those: Squatting like real slavs! Babushka would be proud of them...
What song did you use in the background?
Where is Chris's channel?
Lights under the base all the way around would have been sweet.
For sure, that would look cool!
FUCK YES. i want to build this in my house so bad
Glad you like it!
This is my first time seeing one of your videos. My question is, do you sell these projects? If so, how much? That's a lot of plywood. Just wanted to see what the profit would be after materials. Loved this project btw.

Crouching Johhny, Sitting FourEyes
Hah, I like it!
Damn that bed is so low I would never get out of them in the morning.
Unsubscribing for Chris! Can only be subscribed to one woodworking youtuber, amirite? Kidding~~ ;) Both are awesome! And get hands dirty.. and i like to make stuff.. and diy creators.. and homemade modern...
Hah, the list goes on and on! Thanks Kim.
Those damn squats. I'll have to spoof this in a video, but beware, it will probably result in an ACL explosion.
Hah, have fun with that!
What is the laminate called?
You mean the plywood? It’s Purebond Maple veneered plywood.
Crafted Workshop thanks!
Killer collaboration ! Love that headboard Johnny! It's really made from one sheet of plywood?? Is Chris really as tall as he seems lol :)
#duckwalk
#1000Squats
Thanks Joe! He's pretty tall, a little over 6 foot.
Crafted Workshop always bro!! And OH ok..cuz I'm 6' and I don't look that tall on camera so I thought for sure he was like 6' 8 or 6' 9
+Joe Basement Woodworking & DIY nope, I’m about 5’10” and he’s only a few inches taller at most.
Crafted Workshop No kidding well like they say the camera adds on 10 pounds and a half a foot
lol
+Joe Basement Woodworking & DIY hah!
Nice but a lot of waste on the bed base, you could have cut say 3” strips then a wider section on top and packed out underneath where you can’t see it. Not trolling, just an idea, nice work 👍🏼
Chris must be a Seinfeld fan
He's the biggest Seinfeld fan I've ever met.
Why have the 2 switches for the lights? Seems like an odd choice. You could have spliced them together and put the whole thing on a dimmer. I think the headboard looks pretty cool but the backside is very sloppy with the lighting and disappointing. Love your videos though!

+James Helms dimmers would be even better! I’m not a wiring guy, so I just bought a few kits off of Amazon that I knew would be easy to install.
Wher eis part 1 ? When I search onto your channel with "bed" keyword, I get ALL your videos and no trace of part 1
Part 1 is on Chris’ channel, as it was a collaboration video. th-cam.com/video/4_ArJE4ZlLs/w-d-xo.html
Надо и вниз подсветку сделать
that was a perfect squat
Hah, thanks.
Awesome! I'd love to buy the plan to build it but your platform bed design is for a full and I need it for queen...
How would I make the adjustments or what do I do differently?
Thought you were going to say “I love sleeping with Lisa” when mentioning your sponsor. So I started to giggle... and had to write this nonsense comment 🍻
😂
great bed and but how is the average guy with just the basic power and hand tools ment to do that sort or thing
This is a fairly simple project really. Circular saw and straight edge, some clamps, sander, and maybe a router would get you there.
hi
Better to be red LED
Slightly disappointed chris didn't join in on the johnny squat in the beginning
His weird crab walk was kind of a squat!
Drinking game: take a shot every time he says "headboard" *dead*
I mean, it is a headboard build video!
When you don't expect the owner of a channel you're checking out is going to be really hot 😳
Does your wife know you've been sleeping on Lisa? 🤣
Clever!
+1 for the double squat, +2 for letting us know your wife likes Four Eyes videos better.
Hah, thanks Brandon!
Imma have to agree with your wife on this one.
