I was searching for bedframes a few weeks ago to gather ideas. I bookmarked a number of videos I liked, and I'm going back through the list today to start solidifying my plans. As I watched this video again I thought to myself, "Oh yeah... the guy who claps" 😁 Very nice video, straight to the point, and the final result looks great! Thanks for posting.
That’s awesome! Thank you for the comment. I love hearing stories like these! It makes me happy that others out there are able to use my videos to build their own DIY projects!
Great job- I made my first platform bed in 1978- wish I had TH-cam back in the day - it would have made my life a lot easier. Excellent job it looks great.
Watched a bunch of floating bed videos, and this was the best. I was installing over hardwood, and used cheap lumber, so made the following adjustments for my case: - Instead of staining the 2x8s, nailed a stained hardwood 1x8 fascia on the front and top - my lumber was too cheap to stain or paint, so upholdstered black felt over the bottom box, which also served to be protection over the floor. Looked great. - used hurricane straps to connect bottom to top box - to avoid future squeaks, did not screw slats down, but instead lined the top of 2x2 (2x3 in my case) and inside of the box with leftover felt, and then held the slats in place with webbing screwed in-between the slats. - instead of ripping a 2x8, just used a 2x6 and placed the 2x3's to match
I came to find a way to build myself one of these beds and learnt that I need to get a man who can build things. This whole process is so cool and a lot of work but the end result mindblowing.✌🏽❤️💯
The end product looked great. The underbed lighting certainly helped add the visual effect of it floating. Personally I would have rounded the corners to stop you stabbing your self in the future.
I enjoyed your video. I never thought of using the motion sensor on the led lights. Pure genius. As a contractor I can find a hundred things I would change on every build video. In this case there are only 2. 1. A mistake I made in a bed build is you should have recessed the slats approximately 3/4" and placed 1/4" luan, MDF, Ply (no matter) or the mattress will begin to fail and you will feel every slat. 2. The top trim boards should be under sized by 1/2" to 3/4" in length and width. These two things force the mattress down 1/2" which gives a neater appearance in the corners and prevents the mattress from shifting.
Love the Claps. Great bed. Now let's see how my project turns out for my daughter. What are the dimensions of that bedroom? Thank you for the video. !Happy 2023!
For DYI and workshop enthusiasts where saws and drills roaring all the time, few claps should be totally fine. I was just wondering how this design could be turned into less permanently nailed build, an assembled one that can be moved easily. Great content!
Haha, very true about the claps 😂 I think the 2 boxes would need to be permanently built but they could be more easily separated and then the headboard could be separate so it’s more easily transported
Thank you! I haven’t done a king size but all the dimensions are in the description. You can adjust the measurements to fit a king bed. Hope that helps 😁
Yes Sir! Amazing! Can you please let me know the measurements for a Kink size? I want to build it and I am at the store and realize this is for a Queen size…
I built one similar, my wife is short and she complained about the height and the exposed edge. I cut it down to 3 inch base and a added boxs springs . Good job keep going I like it
Great job I used this to make a Floating bed it cam out Spectacular!! One *Note, your Inner/ outer dimensions for your cap are set for a 2x6, however you made the decision to go 2x4 won’t get a 45 degree cut with the given dimensions it’s not hard to figure out just watch your cuts! Amazing video Thank you!
Thank you! That's awesome that you were able to make it yourself! I actually did, however, list the dimensions for the top cap using 2x4s but I had it as 4" instead of the nominal width of 3.5" wide. I updated the outer dimensions to reflect this. Thanks for the catch!
Nice design and video but without the dimensions it is not very helpful, especially given the issues around balance/stability. Can you please post the dimensions? Thanks! Would this bed work in a situation where you CANNOT secure the bed into the wall, like an apartment?
Thank you! I will list all the dimensions in the description. Let me know if you need any other info! Also, I think it would still work in a situation that you cannot secure it to the wall but it would be slightly less stable. But, as long as you are aware, I think you could avoid having any issues. Just probably shouldn't jump on it haha
Excellent design, man! Worked for me. :-). I dropped the slat rails 1/2" and put a 1/4" piece of plywood on the slats, under the mattress, so you can't see the floor at the edge of the mattress. Oh, and stained to match the rest of the exposed wood.
Thank you and nice job! I would drill some holes in the 1/4" plywood for ventilation of the mattress. The slats are meant to allow the mattress to breathe so some holes in the plywood would help with that.
I can just imagine walking to the bed and me, never looking where I'm going, smashing my shins on those nice sharp wood corners. Looks really cool though
You think a little more height to the inside base box would enhance the floating effect? Think those were 2 x 8’s correct? Maybe 2 x 10’s would look better
Good idea, but you gotta be careful if you raise the bed up higher. Yes, I did you use 2x8s, but if I went any higher, you would be able to see the lower box when looking at the bed which defeats the floating effect. Every room is a bit different and the angle you look at the bed changes but I found that 2x8s worked perfectly and raised the bed to a comfortable height to get in and out of. Hope that helps!
how much weight can this hold if you have a rough guess i have 2 friends who are giants and weigh around 260lbs would they be able to sit on this bed with people? or would it be a thing where i would have to politely ask them not to sit on my bed?
I have had a variety of people sleep on the bed with no issues. The most amount of weight in total was probably around 400lbs. I can’t guarantee that it would hold 520lbs but I think it would fair just fine
I made one like that in '82 and still use it however I discovered the " Torsion Box " by Ian Kirby, Fine Woodworking, '82. Its basically a box consisting of a " honeycomb " type network of 1/4 " plywood covered by two sheets of 1/4 " plywood. It's like an airplane wing, very light and very resistant to twisting ( torsion ). It's important to rip all the pieces ( sides and " honey comb " at the same width without changing the fence. I made one for my table saw runoff table 20 yrs ago and it's still doing great. Nice job on yours though.
Yeah, I have built many torsion boxes before. For this bed it wasn't needed as the structure was already strong enough and there won't be much twisting forces applied to it. Thanks for watching!
Was not a fan of all the claps personally to be honest, but the rest of your work was exceptional and has inspired me to build one, it looks very slick and different
Everyone has to have some authenticity. Everyone snapping their fingers. The clapping is his way of uniqueness. Enjoy the video and keep it pushing. Dang someone always complaining.
@@Aylee23 hardly a complaint, Get a grip. For the headboard I found the standard Ghost Wood boards sold at Home Depot in-store. They’re like $13-21 a Board depending on size. Worth it. I also used pocket holes to hold everything together, including the 2x4 top edging. Other than that, I followed your plans and it turned out great. Made my wife happy. Those lights work great too. Bought a second set for beneath our kitchen cabinets. Total project cost was right around $345 in supplies. Free labor…me.
Awesome work! It made me consider building one. Next video, maybe edit out the "Let's get to it 👏" 😅. But seriously, congrats, it is a very minimalistic and modern bed and I love it.
Just a tip; when ripping boards on a table saw, keep the bigger piece against the guide. You had it switched in the beginning. It can be a safety hazard.
A king and queen are the same length at 80” and the king is 16” wider. So take my dimensions in the description and add 16” to the width. Hope that helps!
Very nice, really good idea I never saw a floating bed, maybe if the wooden wall you mounted on the side of the head, you would make a space of 10 cm with lighting, the feeling of the floating bed was stronger. Question: Have you checked if two people are sitting right at the end of the bed, the bed balanced? Nice job .
Good idea for the lighting. And yes, the bed can support multiple people without any issues. I used 6" lag screws to secure it to the wall so it is plenty strong
Thank you! Those boards came from the demo of our kitchen. They are cedar boards that have aged with the house over the past 40 or so years. They have a really nice patina. You could try to recreate them by buying new cedar and make it look reclaimed by staining it and roughing it up a bit. Hope that helps! Good luck with the build!
So this is for a queen and a full is 6" narrower and 5" shorter. Therefore I would take my dimensions in the description and subtract those measurements from the box sizes. Hope that helps!
Hey buddy. What would be the measurements of the two boxes? I’m looking to a twin maybe a queen but at least a twin. So what would be the the measurements of the two boxes? I also wasn’t looking to have such an edge on the sides.
Ive read through over 100 comments looking for, not the bed dimensions but the cut dimensions of each piece of lumber you had to cut. Do you possible have those? If you do, do you have them for a king size?
Unfortunately I don't have a cut list. But, between the dimensions I listed in the description and the step by step instructions in the video, you should be able to build one yourself. A king is the same length as a queen, but is 16" wider. So take the dimensions I provided and add 16" to the width. Hope that helps!
Great design and pretty simple. Can you tell me what sort of wood you used for the headboard? Hard to tell if you purchased those boards that color or if it’s just standard fur/pine with an added finish. I’ll need to modify a bit for a Cal King. Thanks again for sharing. Great job.
Thank you! This is cedar that we reused from our kitchen demo. You won’t be able to find it in stores. Some of the big box stores sell legitimate reclaimed barn wood online though. It can be quite pricey however
Thank you! I provided all the dimensions in the description which is for a queen so you can subtract 5" from the length and 22" from the width to fit a twin. Hope that helps!
Wonderful job brother!! That came out spectacular! Keep up the great content and I look forward to you’re future videos! Also the floating bedside tables was a perfect touch!
Thanks! My son and I are building it!. Great video! How did you come up with the base dimensions? I’m asking for 2 reasons. 1. we want to convert to a size full bed and I see from your reply regarding a size Full that to narrow down to 6 in and shorten the length by 5 inches. 2. I don’t want the base to be too tippy (Like to limit screws or not screw bed into wall at all). Thanks!
That’s awesome! I would use my dimensions in the description and adjust them for a full by determining the difference in length and width between a queen and full. After that, make a cut list of all the boards you need and what sizes. Then take it slow and use my video as a guide. You got this! Good luck with the build!
I love Pine and its smell, but i hate the way it takes the stain, even after conditioner the stains come on patchy, hence i dont ever stain it as much. Great work done!
I have not heard of a super king before, but I have listed the dimensions for a queen in the description. You should be able to adjust those accordingly to fit a super king
I know this maybe a weird question. But is there any places where you can get the power tools used to build. Maybe second hand? I'm disabled so cost is a Huge issue but I have Ideas and desire a Plenty lol. Also any ideas on the MOST IMPORTANT tools that can allow for Many uses when doing Diy. I ask bc luv you step by step videos and seeing that you do this by your self (well with the village) but you show step by step the whole cutting process which is a life saver to me. So I figured maybe you'd be the person to ask about tools. Knw u get a Ton of questions. So 🤞🏾 maybe this one catches your eye. Thanks so much for the loads of inspiration. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐👍🏾💭
You can find lots of tools on Facebook marketplace or Craigslist. I would start will a drill/impact driver and a circular saw. From there you can add tools to your arsenal as you need them
I didn't put the number of each board in the description since a lot of people adapt the design to fit different size mattresses. Also, you could buy extra long 2x8s and get multiple pieces out of it rather than buying multiple smaller pieces depending on what your supplier has in stock. You got it right in terms of the number and size. You just need to add 2 additional 2x4s to support the slats in the larger box. Hope that helps!
I built this several months ago so wood prices have changed and they are also dependent on where you live, but I spent around $150 in wood for the materials
Hey, this is Bryan from Ecuador, I like the concept but I am not familiar with the american metric system so I was wondering what are the dimensions of every piece of wood you used, I mean the height, width and depth? Thanks in advance for your reply
@@GoldenKeyDesign I’m confused on how you attached the cap to the top of the bed. With 2x4 and an 1.5” over hang there’s not really any where to screw them on
@@tylerb4355 Good question! I screwed them in from the underside through the slats and slat supports. You can a time-lapse of it at 13:11. Hope that helps!
Thank you! The frame is about 15” high since I used 2 2x8s and the mattress is about 11” so a total of 26”. I find the height to be perfect as my feet comfortably touch the ground when sitting on the bed 😁

Hey buddy. What would be the measurements of the two boxes? I’m looking to a twin maybe a queen but at least a twin. So what would be the the measurements of the two boxes? I also wasn’t looking to have such an edge on the sides.
All the measurements are in the description 😁
Fantastic job mate love ❣you're skills !just keep on doing what you're doing ,sooo talented .Much love &Respect 💯💞🇧🇿🇧🇿
Thank you so much 😀
Ive read through over 100 comments looking for, not the bed dimensions but the cut dimensions of each piece of lumber you had to cut.
Well done, really nice build.
The only annoying part is the clapping at the end of every clip.
Thank you! And agreed haha! Trying to cut down on it. It is a really bad habit lol
It can be quite pricey however
I love this and might even try it myself one day!👌🏾
Thank you, please give it a try!
@@GoldenKeyDesign I will soon, once I buy my place. Have a blessed day 😉🙏🏾
Great outcome, plz give measurements, thanks
Thanks! Check the description
Wow that was pretty amazing. The clapping was a bit annoying and funny lol. But good job on your build! Subbed
Thank you! I know the clapping is a bit much so I have limited it in my other videos haha! Thanks for the subscription!
I really liked this video!! Can you give me the measurements for a twin bed possibly??
Thank you! I provided all the dimensions in the description which is for a queen so you can subtract 5" from the length and 22" from the width to fit a twin. Hope that helps!
This is really nice love the finish you did a wonderful job on this one
Thank you, really appreciate the kind words!
That one you made what size mattress was it for
Would love to get the measurements I would love to do that as a present for the wife
This is for a queen size bed and all the dimensions are in the description!
I used to use the one extension cord method . So many times I’d switch tools and have the disappointment of not remembering to plug it in 😅
Wonderful job brother!! That came out spectacular! Keep up the great content and I look forward to you’re future videos! Also the floating bedside tables was a perfect touch!
Thank you man! Really appreciate the feedback and kind words!
How many board feet of lumber was used?
@@charlesmueller2160 I bought 6 8' 2x8s
Thanks!
You had me til all those claps.
👏
on god, so funny
I'd really love to do one for my self could you assist me with the best measurement for a 5by6 bed
You can adjust the measurements in the description 😁
Stop clapping 👏😂😂
Any possibility of having a list of materials required?
There’s a cut list in the description with what dimension of lumber is needed for each piece. Hope that helps!
@@GoldenKeyDesign Thank you, noted
I came across your channel. I love your content but that clapping transition is painful on my ears as I listen with buds in.
I know, I’m trying to limit the clapping moving forward! Thanks for the feedback
Same here..
Hey man I’m 17 years old, and wanting to build this model of a floating bed do you have any tips for me building one for a full size bed?
That’s awesome! I would use my dimensions in the description and adjust them for a full by determining the difference in length and width between a queen and full. After that, make a cut list of all the boards you need and what sizes. Then take it slow and use my video as a guide. You got this! Good luck with the build!
STOP. FUKING. CLAPPING.
I know, I know...
Working on it!
@@GoldenKeyDesign NEVER. STOP. CLAPPING!!!!
Really keen to try this! Is they’re a cut list by any chance to make it easier for a queen bed frame haha! Thanks all the way from Aussie
All the dimensions are in the description 😁
Brilliantly build. Is it ok to ask what guage nail gun you used for head board
I used a pin nailer which is 23 gauge but 18 gauge brad nails would also work
I love Pine and its smell, but i hate the way it takes the stain, even after conditioner the stains come on patchy, hence i dont ever stain it as much. Great work done!
That’s interesting because I have never had any issues staining pine. I didn’t notice any blotchiness in this build in particular either 🤷♂️
Lucky you, mine are always bleh! Specially compared to how well Teak and Walnut absorb stain! cheers
Man that is really nice. I may try this to surprise my wife, thank you sir.
Thank you and go for it!
Tip, don't screw your slats you want them to be able to give for more comfort...make spacers between them and anchor them
Thanks for the tip!
Can u elaborate on making spacers in between the slats and anchor them in?
Could you possibly give the dimension for a super king bed and the number of each size wood would require
From there you can add tools to your arsenal as you need them
So am I correct that’s a total of 9 2x8? 4 for the small box 5 for the large box a total of 8 slats 3 2x4 for cap and that’s all the wood ?
I didn't put the number of each board in the description since a lot of people adapt the design to fit different size mattresses. Also, you could buy extra long 2x8s and get multiple pieces out of it rather than buying multiple smaller pieces depending on what your supplier has in stock. You got it right in terms of the number and size. You just need to add 2 additional 2x4s to support the slats in the larger box. Hope that helps!
I see the measurements for the top cap is 2x4. But is that the measurements before u cut 1 1/2" off the lip or after?
The measurements in the description are after I cut the lip off
The 3-side screwing mode gave more security to the center of the bed❤❤❤
Is it possible to know what was the total cost of all the materials? Wood primarily.
I built this several months ago so wood prices have changed and they are also dependent on where you live, but I spent around $150 in wood for the materials
Those claps are mad loud 😂. Great video. Planning to follow your video for my own bed.
Thanks in advance!!!🎉
😂 Thanks! Good luck with the build!!
Can u add exactly how many of each board to buy in your description I see u say which 1s but can u tell us how many of each
You know so I won’t have to go back thru the video stopping and started counting the boards
Just replied to your other comment 😁
Hey, this is Bryan from Ecuador, I like the concept but I am not familiar with the american metric system so I was wondering what are the dimensions of every piece of wood you used, I mean the height, width and depth? Thanks in advance for your reply
Nice build. I would round the corners though. Those corners are shin high and will give you a good whack!
What is the material used to build the bed is it plyboard or any wood please tell in details
I go through all the details in the video and have a full cut list in the description 😁
Sorry for all the questions. What kind and size screws did you use?
I prefer GRK screws. I mainly used 2.5” for most connections and occasionally used shorter 1.5” screws
Hey how can, I make an floating bed exactly like this one? Pretty cool !
You should be able to follow this video as I show all the steps. The dimensions are in the description
I suggest you to cover the gaps between the small and the big box in order to avoid dust and dirth stuffs!!
Good idea!
This is really amazing.. But i Have a question how much height this bed?
Thank you! The frame is about 15” high since I used 2 2x8s and the mattress is about 11” so a total of 26”. I find the height to be perfect as my feet comfortably touch the ground when sitting on the bed 😁
