This was so helpful, Eve! Would love to see a whole series similar to this. (I know you've done others!) So helpful and very informative. Thank you! Happy Easter!
Thank you Tiffany! :) I have at least 2-3 other comparisons charts I want to make, but after that Il have to check the state of my stash so I can see what I have in multiple brands or variants. Either that or I win the lottery and buy All the Paints XD And Happy Easter to you too!
Hi Eve, I love watching your videos, so when I found this, I had to see it! My favorite color is burnt sienna and I was eager to see the comparisons. Thx as always for posting 👍
Thank you! :) I'm slowly coming around to this color, but I think it's still at an odd position. It's really like a dark orange, somewhere between brown, red and yellow (depending on the brand). It is very useful in mixes, I'm still unsure about if I should use it "straight". What's your favorite way to use this color?
Quin burt orange took the place of burt sienna in my pallette. I would just tone it down if needed. But now that its discontinued and getting harder to find... .Im looking for a replacement.
It's a good substitution, since PR101 is often used to make some formulations of burnt sienna! Any particular reason why you made the switch? (Just curious!) :)
Eve Bolt - Bolt's Vault My main blue is Prussian, which allows me better mixing options with TOR than burnt sienna. Also, it's a bit more lively for landscape use.
I have a few paints in that part of the colour wheel, and have been exploring. Funny, I can see my Orange (PO71) as a kind of a 'bright brown', and I think I will try mixing and under / overpainting my browns with it.
Im really enjoying these comparison videos. It's interesting how the same pigment can look different depending on who makes it. I really like the Holbein one, very bright and vivid. Ive started to notice something with schmincke, a lot of artists call it their go to paint but ive seen a few comparisons of it to other paints now and it doesn't appear to be as nice as other brands.
Thank you! I enjoy making these videos! And it's a good opportunity to learn more about the paints I have, too. Schmincke is a good professional brand, but I can see why it wouldn't appeal to some people. The colors are often on the semi-opaque or opaque side of things and can be harder to get a good dark deep shade (like Prussian blue, which needs to be mollified with water prior to use for best results.) It depends a lot on what's easily available to one, I think. Like here in Canada and the USA, Daniel Smith, Holbein, Winsor&Newton are easy to find and through use can easily become a favorite, while in some other (European) countries, they might have easier access to Schmincke. (Just my opinion anyway!)
Loved this video! I love comparing paints myself and just did a burnt sienna one recently after buying a new tube of Brehat burnt sienna from the French company Dalbe. Has no pigment number but looks exactly like White Nights red ochre and makes a perfect neutral with Ultramarine Blue which is not the case whith the cotman version which is my favorite.
Actually not. I only have lemon yellow and burnt sienna. There is not much info about them online, but since they are the only individual artist grade tubes avaiable locally I thought I would give them a try. I only allow myself to buy 2 new colors once I finish a tube or pan. Otherwise I end up spending a lot and not painting all that much.
Great video Eve! 😆 I'm having to swatch out all the different families of colors together for each brand, so I can see the differences like you showed & so I can pick my colors easier. That's going to take awhile...lol 😉
Thanks Val! You're gonna be making swatches for some time, but it's also gonna be so very useful and helpful once it's done :D Aside from your Primatek, how big is your hoard?
Eve Bolt - Bolt's Vault lol...I already started with the blues last night. As for how many other than the full primatek...120+ tubes/pans (10 artist grade brands) that I quickly counted in my head. 😉 Most of the tubes are daniel smith & I just got the qor 12 set last week. Luckily I have a large counter to spread out all of the palettes.
It is nice to see them all together. I really like the Holbein and the White Nights because they are so vivid and smooth even though they look completely different.
Thanks for the video! I'm used to Jane Davenport's version of burnt sienna - I forget the fancy name she gave it, but it is PR101 and is a lovely redish brown. I got a cotman version and can't do it, it's too orange. So, I decided to go pro and got the daniel smith version, but it isn't red enough! It feels too... brown. It is hard to tell exactly from the tv what I'm after, but maybe the senelier one might do the trick... Or maybe I should start exploring other PR101 colours... I use it in skin colours which is why the other colours just feel off to me, I'm not used to it. I'm half thinking of getting a Jaune Brilliant 2 and calling it a day!
I seem to have developed a bit of an addition to the Cotman burnt sienna. I love the warn transparent nature of it and in makes so many lovely mixes. The professional w&n uses different pigments and it just doesn't grab me like the Cotman one does.
I love the way it tones Cotman turquoise. It gives a beautiful transparent colour a bit like a strong potters pink when mixed with Dioxazine Purple. It makes a great mix with alizarin crimson hue to make a rich skin tone when dilute, and I love the really natural greens it mixes with both viridian hue and intense green ( phthalo green). I never liked working with oranges and browns until I tried the single pigment pr101 Cotman burnt sienna, then I fell in love with it and started to experiment more with the warm neutrals.
Currently I'm also loving the way that a mix of White Night cad red light and turquoise blue blends and then granulates apart on textured papers. The also work really nicely if they are not fully mixed on the brush when applied to rough or cold press paper
I'm taking notes of all these mixes so I can try them someday :D Thank you for sharing! I've been playing with Mars Black a lot lately and it's also one that will granulate apart from anything it's mixed in. It makes for some truly beautiful effects and it doesn't muddy the color too much even if it's a black :)
Thank you so much. Taking one color to show differences is so helpful. Especially one so many are familiar with. The only thing I would like even better is if it were blind until a "reveal" at the end. LOL Why? Because I love Sennelier paint and picked it again here however can't help wonder if that's because I knew it was Sennelier already. ;-) A close second, for me, shocked me... DR Aquafine! Really? But then I saw it was a combo pigment so Sennelier single won.
I could show the completed chart at first with the names hidden and then go with the footage of me painting the swatch, that could be fun! :) Sennelier paints are absolutely gorgeous, I love how their Burnt Sienna was so smooth.
I love Burnt Sienna. I only have 3 versions, Kuretake, Sakura Koi and the Cotman. But they are favorites of mine for shading yellows and pale skin tones with. I hope to get the M Graham Burnt Sienna in the future, as their version of the color looks lovely :)
I looked at my Koi sets but they don't seem to have a color labelled as Burnt Sienna..? Do you use the tubes or the pan sets? I have that M.Graham paint on my wishlist too! All their paints are so beautiful and intense! :)
The Koi burnt sienna comes with the 18 tube set, and it also comes in some of the larger sets too I believe :) I started out with the tube set when I was just getting in to watercolor, then when I was nearly out of those I moved to the pan set of 30. They had a light reddish brown color that was similar to burnt sienna but it just didn't cut it, so I replaced it with the Cotman burnt sienna. I hear the even bigger sets they just released (36, 40 and 40+) have burnt sienna though. I really did like the tube set version. I wish I could afford all the M Graham tubes of paint! Even though they aren't quite so expensive for me like Schimincke is, I still have to save up for them. But it is worth every drop of paint, in my opinion :)
Ah! Good to know that the tube set has a burnt sienna; I have the 24 colors set of Koi pans and that doesn't have it (oddly enough). The tube set version sounds really appealing :) I'd love to have every tube of M.Graham too! The quality is incredible and the prices are really good. Well, in general that is. It's probably a lot easier to get in the USA and Canada, too.
I think you would enjoy the Koi tube set of 18. It's a more selective palette, but it covers the basics. It was perfect for when I was just starting out again (Been painting off and on since I was a kid). I'm pretty close to the factory, maybe a half a day's drive. But even then it can be tricky to find the tubes in my city. There's one store that I love going to- local art supply store- every so often to get a few tubes of paint. Or I order from Amazon and it still gets here lickity split. I've seen comparisons to other brands, but M Graham is the one I keep going back to for a more locally made paint and mom and I love the feeling that we're supporting a smaller company (Only 9 people in the factory and 1 stray cat!). Hopefully as the company continues to grow, it'll become easier for people outside the country to get them. I want everyone to be able to enjoy the M Graham quality :)
My favorite is that handmade one! I can't wait my pakage to arrive xD I use burnt sienna often as skin color, by adding lots of water. But I noticed that Schmincke one behaves differently in mixes than other burnt siennas and I don't like to use it as skin color, but it works well when trying to mix gray.
I hope you receive it soon!! :D I'm so happy with the pigment I got, I love how it's a smidge more muted (by being less yellow/red), it feels much more natural.
This is great! Thanks for doing the comparison(and...cats!). I picked up a Van Gogh burnt sienna the other day, purely because it's a mix with the Mars Black pigment (Pbk11). :) For me, the most interesting Burnt Sienna was the one by Mijello - it's a completely different hue, but I still like it a lot. Have to say my least favourite would be the Winsor and Newton one, it's just not the hue I enjoy much. I recently placed an order that includes a Burnt Sienna by Maimeri(Venezia), and curious to see what it's like. By the way, have you any PBr6 paints other than that from White Nights? I absolutely love their Mars Brown, and it's a bit of bummer they don't do tube paints in a larger range...
Always cats :) I will make some split pans with Mars Black eventually, to try and see if I can get some nice granular mixes that way. It is a truly lovely texture, I wish I could work it as granular as Daniel Smith's. I'm curious to see your new burnt siennas swatches, if you put them on Instagram :) I don't have any PBr6 (outside the W.N. one) but I checked and Daniel Smith has 3 (Enviro-Friendy Brown/yellow/red Iron Oxide). My local pigment store has two available: German Earth (translated....) and Brown Oxide. This is tempting. I'm also eyeing their chromium oxide green and alizarin crimson. Pigments ♥♥♥
Yay! I saw you made a couple of split pans with ultramarine(if I remember correctly) - it's a great idea. Van Gogh's burnt sienna with PBk11 doesn't granulate at all, unfortunately, but I kind of expected that. It's a nice hue, though. The worst burnt sienna I tried was the ones from Winsor and Newton. And thanks for the research! I just checked the supplies store and the tubes of colours you mentioned are only coming as in big size, really pricey...meh. I've been thinking of making some paints myself(with a friend of mine), it'll probably take a long time I get the hang of it, and would have to experiment a lot as I'll not include honey in my paints...but it's exciting! That being said, am also looking forward to the new colours you'll make next! German Earth and Chrom Green would definitely go into my next order ;)
I did some split pans (and I really have to find the time to make more!!), they are pretty neat! I really love being able to mix the color everytime I need it, and vary it to match exactly what I want. I gotta try some other pairings :D Making paint is so much fun! :D You could possibly add a bit of glycerin instead of the honey, or maybe try with some sugar syrup. None of these have the conservation capacities of honey, but they would help keep the paint more easy to rewet (I think). I was waiting to see if I win the giveaway the pigment store had ( I didn't ) so I might have to wait a bit before I can order more pigments, but I know what I'll get!! :D
We used a bit more glycerin and clove oil instead of honey this time, hopefully it works! I was also thinking of a kind of syrup, but then I think it'll bring a higher risk of getting the paints mouldy. Some of the paints were quite runny and some went really thick - it was really fun making them :D
Sorry for replying so late! A good primary set with Sennelier is Sennelier Yellow Light, Phthalocyanine Blue and Rose Madder Lake. These are a "printer primaries" and they mix into a lot of lovely colors :)
Eve Bolt - Bolt's Vault Is Rose Dore Madder Lake a good warm red color from Sennelier? What you should recommend since I already got a Quinacridone Red which is cool color I believe.
Woah! So cool seeing so much variation in what should theoretically be the same color. Makes me feel less bad about buying multiples of the same color in different brands. Also, I'm a big fan of too many cats, so that doodle in the beginning is A++ 12/10 would love again. Clarification question: In the voiceover for the top left swatch (Holbein?) you said it was a real PBr7, but the writing under it says PBk7. Is that even possible?!?!?! I assume the r is correct, but might want to add a note. In a separate, and unrelated but ongoing conversation.... I got some finished Lukas paints, and even THEIR made paints with their pigments rub off, so I've come to the conclusion that Lukas is bad and it should feel bad.
Hahaha! There can't be too many cats. Impossible. XD And you're right, I did write "PBk7" but I indeed meant "PBr7". I made two mistakes on that chart, what's up with me? lol I do not understand what would be the appeal of a pigment that can rub off. I've also heard of Kremer pans doing that and I'm a bit baffled. They have magnificent pigments and resources, there shouldn't be any reason for an ultramarine blue paint to rub off. Do you think you'll try getting some pigments from online stores in the future? What's the current status of your pigment/paints collection? :)
I mean, pretty much all of my pigments ARE from online, meaning all the Gamblin ones are from online. Oh! But good news! I just found a small art store nearby that has Gamblin pigments available in reality!!! Was super shocked. They also have sennelier paints and daniel smith paints in-person, so that's pretty great. I have about twelve or thirteen pigments right now, and I've only mixed about six so I've still got a while to go before I'm 'done,' but I think I'll get at least one or two more done this week if I have time. I'm working on a secret project for a friend who's getting married so that's taking up most of my free time right now.
This was so helpful, Eve! Would love to see a whole series similar to this. (I know you've done others!) So helpful and very informative. Thank you! Happy Easter!

Exactly what I need! Perfect. I love the Holbein.
I love your videos Eve, they are so beautiful, relaxing, and tranquil. You do a great job!
Thank you so much for the kind words, I really appreciate it!! ♥
Quin burt orange took the place of burt sienna in my pallette. I would just tone it down if needed. But now that its discontinued and getting harder to find...
.Im looking for a replacement.
You can maybe check the transparent red iron oxide paints, they might do the trick!
Fun comparison! I swapped my burnt sienna out for transparent oxide red PR 101, but that reddish brown color family is a
favorite!

That's probably a very good habit. Watercolor tubes can last a really long time, it can be hard to be patient :)
Great video Eve! 😆 I'm having to swatch out all the different families of colors together for each brand, so I can see the differences like you showed & so I can pick my colors easier. That's going to take awhile...lol 😉

i have one from w&n and one from sennelier, both are gorgeous! thankyou for making this comparison video
Prussian Blue is a good idea, thanks for the suggestion! :)
It is nice to see them all together. I really like the Holbein and the White Nights because they are so vivid and smooth even though they look completely different.
True! I didn't expect to find so many subtle variations in the color, it really makes sense to have a "favorite" in this situation :)
Cool. It's always neat to see these. It would have been fun to paint each cat with each of the different siennas :)
It would've been pretty cool! A mess of palettes but for a nice result :)
Thanks for the video! I'm used to Jane Davenport's version of burnt sienna - I forget the fancy name she gave it, but it is PR101 and is a lovely redish brown. Van Gogh is a wonderful color. The italian is also nice. I use Van Gogh quite a lot in my paintings.

Nice review😊
One quick question - Which looks better? W&N or Schmincke
Always cats :)
I will make some split pans with Mars Black eventually, to try and see if I can get some nice granular mixes that way. It is a truly lovely texture, I wish I could work it as granular as Daniel Smith's. I'm curious to see your new burnt siennas swatches, if you put them on Instagram :)
I don't have any PBr6 (outside the W.N. one) but I checked and Daniel Smith has 3 (Enviro-Friendy Brown/yellow/red Iron Oxide).
I gotta try some other pairings :D
Making paint is so much fun!
Some of the paints were quite runny and some went really thick - it was really fun making them :D
hehe... "I don't have every burnt sienna. That would be kind of extreme"
But you still have 11 more than me ;)
Hahahaha!
Fair point XD
*Trying find burnt Siena in sennelier color chart*
Their Burnt Sienna is so lovely! :)
Eve Bolt - Bolt's Vault oh, can u advice me nice sennelier's red for primary palette?
Sorry for replying so late! A good primary set with Sennelier is Sennelier Yellow Light, Phthalocyanine Blue and Rose Madder Lake. These are a "printer primaries" and they mix into a lot of lovely colors :)
Eve Bolt - Bolt's Vault thaaanks
Impossible. XD
And you're right, I did write "PBk7" but I indeed meant "PBr7". I made two mistakes on that chart, what's up with me? lol
I do not understand what would be the appeal of a pigment that can rub off.
Small art stores are awesome :D And Sennelier and Daniel Smith are pretty awesome too ♥
I hope you're all done mixing the Lukas pigments XP
One of my favorite colors! P.S. It's White Nights, not White Knight :)
Oh! Thanks! I still manage to get all mixed up with this brand's name, I'm ridiculous XD
Cute cats!
Thank you! :)
