Burnt sienna is like a warm slice of buttered toast. It's like sipping cinnamon hot chocolate in front of a campfire. It's like popcorn when watching a movie. Burnt sienna just feels so right.
Your poetic description truly captures the warmth and spirit of Burnt Sienna. It almost sounds like a movie that one wouldn't mind to watch over and over again. As always, thank you for being here! 🫶🏻
My favourite burnt Sienna has always been W&N - just lovely in mixes. Also it is transparent which is also good to mix into semi- opaque or opaque pigments and not get mud... It also is my favourite burnt Sienna to make the all time favourite grey with French Ultramarine. I have not tried Michael Harding yet but really want to give it a try. Thanks so much for a wonderful comparison video. beautifully done!
Thank you for sharing that with me! PR101 is a versatile mixing complement--a personal favorite--so I can definitely visualize the lovely mixes that you're referring to. Just like Winsor & Newton's, Michael Harding's Burnt Sienna is delightful to work with so I highly recommend trying it out too.
A very beautiful comparison study as always, dear Stivi 💗 Thank you. I only have Winsor and Newton, so it was lovely to see how the other brands differ!
It's always a pleasure to have you here, @roxannemaguire9844! I love the transparency of Winsor & Newton's Burnt Sienna. It is versatile and mixes well with other pigments. Thank you for being here! 💗
@ChantelleArts Thank YOU! I am glad you found it relaxing. Please allow me to take this opportunity to congratulate you on your new house! Can't wait to hear more about all the artwork that you'll be creating for your home. My heart is so happy for you! 🫶🏻
Thank you so much for this video, and the others. I love to learn about the pigments and compare the paints on offer from each brand - not good for the bank balance :) I really appreciate your devotion to the art and also the mixing suggestions at the end. Thanks again :)
Hahaha, yes! It is unhealthy for the bank account. Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts! I really appreciate this gesture. Hopefully this video will be useful for those who are looking at purchasing Burnt Sienna or other pigments that other videos covered.
Watching this again and I do like the ones leaning on the red side more so than the brownish ones, but overall all the brands have a pretty burnt sienna! 💖thank you for this video. It’s awesome seeing so many burnt sienna s together to see differences and similarities!
True, they're all beautiful! Where they're sourced from is what makes the difference. Also, how they're calcined. But overall, they are gorgeous and each serves a purpose!
i'm so Glad you did Burnt Sienna . there is so much variation from one brand to another . it's gonna help me choose the better ones for me . thank you .
That warms my heart! I have been wanting to feature this palette staple because, as you've mentioned, there is so much variation from one manufacturer to another. Glad to know that this is helpful! If it is not too indulging to ask, what has been your go-to Burnt Sienna?
@@stiviwonders among the ones i've tried : Van Gogh , Winsor & Newton , Daniel Smith . Daniel Smith is my favorite one . for now I prefer strong earthy PBr 7 , but maybe i'll discover new favorites with your video .
Thank you! for sharing! Those are great choices. You'll see the Italian Burnt Sienna in this video as well, if you're curious about it and have not seen it yet. In a few days, I will publish the Burnt Sienna article on my website. I'll post some mixes there that feature Daniel Smith's PBr7.
Thanks again Stivi! This was a wonderful video as I am a big fan of burnt sienna. I really appreciate seeing your color mixing swatches at the end. So many beautiful colors come alive! I also didn’t realize that you had a website. Not sure why that took me so long to find but I’m now a subscriber of your newsletter. Thanks again for sharing, I always look to your videos to find and help make decisions on my pigments. 🎨🖌️
Thank you for your kind words and for subscribing to the newsletter! I do my best to include the hot-pressed sheet and some mixes at the end so it is delightful to hear that you appreciate them. There'll be more on my website soon. I had planned to include more mixes but decided against doing so in the end since the video was already getting lengthier. I've had my website since I was much younger and it has been getting more "color and content" action since last year. It is important for me to prioritize your experience on the channel and that's probably why you haven't really heard of it. Mentioning my website and the product links have taken the back seat. This way, you and other viewers, can focus on the videos and not be distracted. Aside from the "special project" that I'm working on, part of my goal is to publish all the swatch sheets that I have featured on TH-cam and on Instagram on the website as well. So there'll be a long list of passion projects that are coming up! I appreciate YOU and your support. Burnt Sienna is a palette staple for me and it is also my husband's favorite so this video is extra special!
Great comparisons, as usual, on another favorite color. 😍 I always take screenshots of your videos to save as wonderful references. TY for including Utrecht. 😂 I remember driving to Chicago with other art students about 30 years ago. There weren't as many local art supplies available at that time. It took us three hours to drive there to purchase much less expensive oil paints. We made some fun memories. 😊 Thank you for helping us make easier choices today.🥰
I appreciate this tour down the nostalgic lane, @TracyIndy. Road trips are indeed soul-enriching life events. Adding art supplies into the picture really takes it further, in the most magical way. Thank you for sharing that with me! Also happy to hear that the swatch sheets are useful references! Things have turned productively hectic on my end but I am pouring a lot more time on my website so that I could also share the swatches on there. Utrecht's Burnt Sienna is revelatory, in terms of flow performance and pigment content.
@stiviwonders I'm sure your time has been well spent, and I look forward to checking out your website updates as well as any upcoming comparisons.😊 The variety of all these Burnt Siennas is incredible. Thanks again, your videos are always a pleasure . 🙏
Wonderful, as always! :D My favourite is still the Schmincke Horadam, probably because I’m so used to it. Some people take offence that it has PBk included, but I don’t mind. It mixes the most gorgeous greys with Ultramarine finest, and I love it for skin tones, too. I like that it is not very granulating compared to others. I don’t like Horadam’s new Transparent Burnt Sienna, it often has too much binder.
Wonderful to have you here again! What I love about your message is that you found one that works for you and you're loving it. That is fantastic! Others take a lifetime to find what they like, in pigments and in life, in general, so they take offense easily. I love, love Schmincke's Ultramarine Finest with Burnt Sienna! I have not experienced too much binder content on my Transparent Burnt Sienna one. Sorry to hear that your experience with it is different. These days, I keep reaching for Michael Harding's Burnt Sienna and Della Magna's Monte Amiata Burnt Sienna.
@@stiviwondersThank you so much for your kind reply! Sometimes one might get lucky and find the right colour right away. That was the case for me with the Schmincke Burnt Sienna. Horadam was the first professional watercolour I ever tried in my younger years and it has been a trusty companion for ages, before I started branching out and trying all kinds of other watercolour companies. I do like other Burnt Siennas, namely the Winsor&Newton, the Sennelier, the Rembrandt, the Holbein and a few others. I haven’t tried Michael Harding’s watercolours and I haven’t yet heard of the Della Magna colours. Recently I’ve been thinking of refraining from buying new watercolours, and to use what I have, which is more than I will ever be able to use up, unless I start painting murals with all the watercolour brands I’ve been collecting for the past 20 years or so. ;)) Lovely swatching videos like yours are a relaxing way of rediscovering all the beautiful colours I might already own. 🤩
Thank you! All of them are excellent choices. Nothing wrong with your comment but I am encouraged to mention that I never refer to my videos as comparison because that word inevitably invites negative energy into the discussion. "Presentation" is a more applicable term and it naturally builds the structure for fun conversations. Thank you for being here!
Thank you! I use a few Genuine Vermillion pigments, not the modern ones that some manufacturers conveniently labeled as "Vermillion." I will definitely consider this for future videos.
@@stiviwonders oh thanks a lot ❤️. I t will be wonderful to see other searching. (By the way, if I remember correctly, you wrote in a comment that one of your favorite painters is Italian. Who is he ? I am curious) 👀
I really love Opera pink, bur rarely use since the pigment is so fugitive. Is it possible to find an Opera or Opera-like colour with the same intensity, that isn’t fugitive?
Hello! Have you tried this Opera Rose from Michael Harding Watercolours? th-cam.com/users/shortsbB2AcsWvEFo It may very well be the answer to your question. It has a good lightfast rating. Meaning, while it does not have the longevity that comes with colors with “excellent” lightfast ratings, it is still palette-worthy for those whose work requirements do not demand for paintings to last for more than 100 years under gallery or museum conditions. For those who cherish pink pigments, this is a sophisticated pink watercolor, richly-pigmented, delightful to work with, and it is wonderfully vibrant sans the obtrusively bright “neon” appearance that is typically associated with other Opera Rose options in the market.
