    I this video I will give you a glimpse of my watercolor palette and show you my top 10 favorite watercolor pigments - the ones that I come back to time and again, including Daniel Smith, Winsor & Newton, and QoR. Of course this is not a prescription for how to build your palette - everyone has their favorites! :) But these are my personal go-to pigments that I often get asked about so I am excited to share my thoughts on why I love them, how I use them and what makes them particularly suitable for my watercolor style. I hope this inspires you to try something new and different in 2020! You will see samples of my painting progress, and get a good sense of my thinking process as I choose and use these beautiful colors. Enjoy!
    CORRECTION: Winsor Ultramarine is a granulating color. Thank you to everyone who pointed it out and my apologies for the mistake!

    This is exactly how a palette description video should be made. The amount of effort put into it is commendable. This is by far my favorite video of this kind. Not like the others where they just swatch out their palettes which anyway contains just the most basic colors. Great work! You earned a fan.

      Thank you so much for your feedback Kartikey!!! 😊 A lot of work goes into these video edits (vs simple timelaoses) and I REALLY appreciate hearing that people find it enjoyable and informative. Feeling encouraged to do more! Have a wonderful day 💙

      @@AnnaBucciarelli I am still learning the basics & have many questions- and in particular- why are the top watercolor brands worthy of the rating? Your description of these colors help so much bc you explain how you use them- what they are capable of, what thet mix well with..in short- this is like a mini- class & review all wrapped up in one.!! Very powerful information. You are an amazing teacher-thank you! 💕

      @@firechick561 Thank you so much for your feedback - I am glad you enjoyed the video! :) I would say that the most important thing { what makes the biggest difference } is the quality of your paper. Meaning using less than 100% cotton will always reduce the quality of your work regardless of technique or skill level. So I would invest in high quality paper above all else including pigments and brushes. In terms of pigments, yes the brand makes a difference, but only if the paper quality is good. You pigments will be more vibrant pure and flow better with top brands. But that doesn't mean you have to spend a fortune - there are "student" grade lower priced options from top brands like Winsor & Newton. In addition, you can always purchase dot charts that allow you to test all pigments from a bran like Daniel Smith for the cost of 1 tube { i buy them all the time } before investing in a full tube of your favourite color. At the end of the day you probably won't use ,more than a dozen pigments and those tubes last years. So get a dot chart, try it out, then pick your favourites. But paper quality first! :)

      @firechick561 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AnnaBucciarelli Thank you for your reply /input!. I will order quality, 100% cotton paper this week & I'll also try the dots now that I know what they are! 😄

      Anna, how does one join your patreon group, also, have you ever bought a DS tube which was defective? I bought a tube of potters pink and it was labeled correctly but the paint did not give any pink shade when swatched. Can you suggest a tube brand to achieve a light pink? Thanks for sharing your incredible gift! We love your awesome gift

    New to the art world and watercolor. Have supplies and started a little with some loose watercolor... and just playing with my favorite colors... one ended up looking like the Caribbean luscious waters of greens and blues. But you're the best realistic artist I've seen! I learned from this lesson, but so much more I need to understand. I thought, at 68, this will be like crayons & colorbook. OH BOY I HAD A SURPRISE BIT BY BIT UNFOLD BEFORE MY EYES EVERY DAY. I signed up as I love to see artists as they create. Love your sweet, gentle voice. God bless you as you share with everyone around the world. You're a gift! Love to you and all who watch from a grateful California gramma 😄🌴🌺

    Apart from your super smooth voice that explains everything so effortlessly, this video has truly opened my eyes and mind to how colours work. As a beginner with no formal art background, engineer here, these concepts and principles have escaped me until now. Thank you for this excellent video, which I'm sure I'll be going back to again and again. For now, I've made a few notes of a couple of the colours I might try. I might have to make do with paints I have already, as Daniel Smith is quite expensive for me.

I do not have a good art store near me but when my friend visits me from Victoria I will ask her to bring me a tube. I have quite few favourites and although most of my paints are Daniel Smith, Winsor Newton and Dr PH Martins I have 2 gorgeous violets from Holbein that I adore! Anna Bucciarelli I love playing with earthy greens but they wouldn’t make my top 10. For basic mixing I use nickel Azo yellow(PY150), Quinacridones Magenta (PR122) and phthalo Turquoise (PB16) for a CMY triad. Then I add (mostly complementary) colours like transparent orange (PO71 or PO107), phthalo green (PG7 or PG36) and Indanthrone Blue (PB60). Perylene Green and Perylene violet round out my basic 8 and the last 2 are something just for fun like cobalt teal ;)

    Lovely to watch. I totally agree with your Quin Coral, by DS. W&N has the same pigment called Quinacridone Red. The one I use most is from Holbein. I have no problem having black pigments. I just mix into it any other pigment and its not actually black anymore. But it's so handy having Indigos and Paynes Grays premixed. I use tube W&N alot and have a few W&N pans too. They are slightly different formulas. The tubes when dry to not disperse as quickly as their pans. But an expert from W&N said that just a few drops of glycerin in the Winser & Newton tube paint is exactly how their pan's are formulated. It just has more glycerin. Thanks so much for sharing!

    • @AnnaBucciarelli
      @AnnaBucciarelli  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you Renee - completely agree on mixing blacks. ❤️ I used to do that all the time, and when i do full comprehensive tutorials in SkillSHare I always mention that you can simply mix your blacks so people don't feel pressured to buy exactly the same colors in order to get the results. W&N tubes are most definitely not the same, we only have them in tubes, so I finally brought some pans from Spain! :))) Have a wonderful holiday and I look forward to seeing you on YT in 2020!

    Thank you for your favourite list. I have only recently started in watercolour. I have built my favourites on both Winsor and Newton Cotman and Professional single pigment shades. The other brand I adore is MaimeriBlu, their purple and turquoise single pigment shades are just scrumptious. I recently did a painting that was just based on those 2 colours and some watercolour pencil as well. I was so proud when I finished it with some gold flakes as it came out looking how I actually wanted. 4 days of love and care went into it and I didn't care about how much pain I put myself into (I have chronic pain issues as well as a myriad of health issues). When I am feeling a bit more confident I will join skillshare and take your classes.

    Hi Anna, Have you tried Winser & Newton Winser Violet, that is a Dioxazine violet pigment also. A (PV23) the same as Qors. I have both and my favorite is Winser Violet (PV23) and Holbein's Permanent Violet (PV23). They just seem to keep more of that brightness after totally dried than my other brands. You are right that they all are a little different in hue. PS, I have Perylene Violet in both Daniel Smith & Winser & Newton. They look identical except the W&N one is a bit more transparent. I use them all the time too for the shadowed areas in my infant portraits. I used a lot on my Cedar Wax Wing painting showing on my icon here.

I don't paint florals (too many talented artists can do it so well) but enjoy your advice on birds and other subjects. explanation of the pigments was outstanding, and an updated version would be most welcome. My only wee suggestion would be to list the pigment numbers, as that is how I label them on my palette.

    Wonderful video. I happened to just see on Jane Blundell's blog that in her own lightfastness tests, Daniel Smith Opera did not fade in 19 months of Australian sun. I heard someone else say that Opera faded in a day in the window, but I don't know what brand. Perhaps it really varies by brand.

      @AnnaBucciarelli  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much for your comment Jenn - I am actually really happy to hear this, I trust Jane's expertise. Personally I haven't seen fading from this pigment in DS and WN version, and I've been painting for about 10 years. That said, I am always hesitant to straight up recommend it, because 1) can't control which brands people use 2) how the hang the work and more importantly 3) I've gotten SO MUCH flack early on in my TH-cam experience for simply mentioning it, I am a bit scarred by the experience lol :) My goal is to provide balanced information with real demos, so hopefully artists can make up their mind, knowing it *might* fade. Thank you!!

    This is very interesting. Looking up the pigments, all but 2 are also available by Winsor and Newton, although their formula might be a bit different. Still, I’m in the U.K. and trying to reduce what I buy that’s flown over from further away. I’ve been looking into Sennelier and Schmincke for that too, though. It’s interesting to compare prices and the descriptions of the formula they each use.

But take heart because if its made with PR122 with that PV dye, at least the PR122 will be left because it is quite lightfast according to HANDPRINT dot com. That is why I use pure PR122 for my brightest pinks. It's the best alternative.

    Black is naturally occurring (obsidian, charcoal, etc). I use a black for well, quite a bit. Particularly because our streets are asphalt and the various birds around here, etc. Add water, make grey. 😁Lots of actual black stuff here on the East Coast US. Just my .02 on colors.
