It would be one thing if they had changed Indys attire to reflect a change in his style as he aged,as one normally does, but they decided to "keep the look the same" and if that is the appearance you are going for, then get it right,or don't do it at all.Great video once again.
Right. The different coloured shirt, _drastically_ different coloured trousers, and the bag having a totally different strap & playing schizophrenic musical chairs on his body...it was atrocious. I thought the no holster with revolver was my biggest issue; but since that was a no-go, them not getting the quintessential look right became the main blunder.

My father's the same age as Harrison, has just about the same body as they did 40 years ago, and goes on a walk everyday after getting up. Even when he's in the garage smoking his pipe (filled with Captain Black, not crack lol), he's standing and moving about.
@@danceswithcomicbooks7733 Oh yeah. A fourth and fifth Indy movie made in the '90s would've been the way to go. Who knows why this wasn't done, 'cause I'm quite sure they had a few good scripts lying around at the time.
You know I am not mad at this outfit, the one thing I am mad about is that Indy did not have the gun shot stitch on his left arm jacket for every single movie.!
Most people change their style to keep up with the times a little, at least. There's no reason why an educated man like Indiana Jones would not have ditched the 1930s fashions.

One of the most ridiculous things about the last film was Indy carrying his outfit inside a bag like he was Spiderman or something.
In Raiders you see him on a plane in a suit and a grey hat. So his Indy clothes where in luggage then as well. He doesn't wear his adventuring clothes everywhere he goes.

@@planetofsoundpodcast9859 I think I´ve not explained myself well. Yes, Indy dressed properly for every situation in the other movies. His clothes were just his clothes. The hat, whip and jacket became iconic because those are the clothes he was wearing in his adventures. But in "Indy V" it was the first time that his clothes were featured like a kind of hero´s uniform. In the train, when he is disguised as a nazi officer, we see his clothes inside a bag, and when he starts doing his "hero things" he changes to his "hero clothes". The same thing happens when he enters that hotel (or was it a restaurant? I forgot) in Morocco. Why is he wearing those clothes? It´s a bit ridiculous (as said in the video).
I'm assuming that before Indy shot the German soldier and took his clothes in the prologue, that he was wearing his adventure clothes, as he was on an adventure with Basil to find the lance. So he shoots the soldier, takes his uniform, heads into the castle, Basil takes Indy's gear and puts it in his bag and waits in the woods. Doesn't seem that implausible. As for why he wears it in Morroco, why not? He hasn't been adventuring for over a decade, Sallah brings his adventure clothes for Indy, hoping the old fire in his friend will reignite. And yes, adventure does begin to stir inside Indy on his way to reclaim the Dial. So he puts adventure clothes on. I guess the "silly thing" if you want to find one is that for half his life at least he has specific clothes he wears when he goes adventuring.
Short story - I was outside Bernie Pollack's office (Bernie was Ford's personal designer) when he was prepping for Crystal Skull when who should appear but Peter Botwright (of Wested Leather) all the way from England. Mr. Botwright had come with jackets in hand to show what he had made for the previous films, but Bernie somewhat unceremoniously dismissed him out of hand, telling him he had his own guy to make the jackets. Mr. Botright was stunned and all I could do was shrug and look sympathetic. A lot of these decisions come down to the peculiar whims of the costume designer - and they ARE whims without any discernable rhyme or reason. Add to that the fact that big stars like Ford will not let you dress them to make them look their best and this is what you get.
I met Peter Botwright a couple of times at his shop. Always had time for a chat. Was a pleasure to talk to. Messed around by Berman’s and others but never bitter. Always made the jackets when asked even if they had to hide his involvement from Monty Berman to get the job done
Very interesting information...so Tony Nowak produced all the Leather jackets, sad thing all these gentlemen unfortunately passed away..Bernie,Peter and Tony.
I've always dug his old man Indy look in Young Indiana Jones and the Mystery of the Blues. At least its different enough to bring something new to the table in a sensible way. Excellent video by the way!
Glad I'm not the only one with the same feelings on Indy's classic look throughout the film series. When I first watched the "making of" Documentary in the first DVD box-set released in the decade of the 2000s, the costume designer for Raiders revealed the logic and care that went into Indy's clothes and how it was featured in the film, it gave the impression of an adventurous man who practically lived in his clothes and that his hat was very much beloved. In my eyes, Indiana Jones looked natural in Raiders of the Lost Ark, but in the subsequent films afterwards, he's wearing a costume. And yes, the Raiders Hat IS the Best and True version of Classic Fedora.
I don’t know, I think it looks awesome, and even in Raiders very clearly hold a lot of significance to him, so I don’t think it’s that crazy that he likes to wear a brown jacket and fedora to adventure, the dude found a look and sticks to it
@@TheAMVDorf I'm not questioning the look that works for him. It's a question of looking authentic in a real world as opposed to wearing a costume for a movie.
Harrison cosplaying as Indy is the only thing that made Dial of Destiny a “Indiana Jones” film. It was pretty much just a generic adventure film that just happened to star Harrison Ford. Once again amazing video!
Indy put his bag on top of his jacket after the last crusade tank battle to avoid a repeat of that fiasco I like to think. Also, I think last crusade is the indys best look. The boxy jacket and tie looks great imo
It bears repeating. As for myself, in the early days, I never assumed that the outfit was supposed to look the same, given the wear and tear that had to be part of his life, but of course that was before they made the hat part of his origin. For one story, at least.
I believe Disney try to cover up the lack of the gun by switching the placement of the shoulder bag to the right side, or sadder yet they just did not care. So sad, just an observation. Thanks for upload a edited version.
That has NOTHING to do with the quality of the items provided by Disney for the outfit NOR the way they were arranged on his person for the film itself. Are you.... inebriated or something?
Last night, I watched Raiders for the 300th time -I'm old enough to have see it on the theater back in 81) and I noticed two moments were Indy wears his satchel over the right shoulder. First, just at the begin of the movie (just when editor Michael Khan is anounced in the credits). The whip is also on his right. It looks like they flipped the image in order to keep the characters "going to the right of the screen" on his walk thru the jungle. The other moment is when Indy borrows the horse to pursuit the truck with the Ark. This time the satchel is on the right, and the whip on the left. However, the satchel goes back to the left during the chasing scene. On the other hand, I completely agree that the Raiders look, hat and whip are the best. Just a small easter egg: in the Disney Plus documentary about Indy and Harrison Ford, there's a still image during the shooting of the Raven. Harrison Ford is not wearing the leather jacket. However, he's wearing a shoulder gun holster. I have never notice during the movie that Indy is wearing one.
Your attention to detail on Indy's costume is nothing short of meticulous!!! I too noticed gradual changes in Indy's outfit, but could never put my finger on it (I simply assumed through the first three films they were each different outfits.) Thank you for giving this issue such clarity and focus on why costuming is SO important to a character...particularly one this iconic!! The slop factor on the costume for Indy 5 is inexcusable!!
I like that you bring up the gun. It triggered me throughout the whole movie especially at the beginning of the movie when he was younger. You also brought up the time period being post war, but they could have made an Indiana Jones signature vertical shoulder holster for that movie or even just have him carry it in his satchel or jacket pocket. If they really did want him to lose the gun for the plot, he could have lost it like in Temple of Doom or have it taken like in Crystal Skull and it would make sense.
Great video, and I loved the full length one as well. I have to say, on a personal level, I don't mind the slight tweaks to his costume over the years, as long as they don't defy logic and common sense. (As some of them clearly do, like the placement of the satchel) Don't forget, he leads a hard life, so some shirts, jackets, and hats are going to be worn out over the years. I don't have any clothes that I owned ten years ago, let alone since 1981, and I'm not an adventurous explorer! I love the franchise and was very disappointed by the last instalment, but not because of Indy's outfit. Incidentally, if you look at the still from Raiders at 4:32 and compare it with your Raiders outfit at the end, your whip and holster look distinctly more orange. Is Indy's just more weathered?
An excellent re-edit of footage taken from the superb Indiana Jones 5 review video, Michael. I do hope this video re-edit whets the appetite of newcomers and encourages them to watch the full version of Michael's Indy 5 Mega review video.
@@Jaytee. Mainly because of all the poor reviews. Being let down by Crystal Skull years ago. And frankly after watching Michael's review I felt like I already watched it.
I grew up around the original 3 Indiana Jones movies thanks to my parents buying the dvd box set way before Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and Dial of Destiny. I always loved his iconic look and it’s a big shame that consistency never made it to the remaining 2 movies. The Last Crusade will always be the movie I’ll come back to often as it reminded me of my days doing outdoor activities with my dad.
I think its ok to not have the SAME exact clothes over the progression of films as we naturally get new things from time to time. Like the revolver from S&W to a webley can be easily explained. Same with the custom shirt to the safari shirt once indie turns old, he hasnt been the kick ass dude he once was, hes a washed out alcoholic who lost his son, wofe, and drive for adventure. He prolly got a new hat and new clothes to better fit him. But certain manerisms dont leave which does urk me such as how he wears his clothes and the bag etc. Progression in outfits shows growth without the exposition
This video is brilliant. It brought to light some points I think I spotted on a subconscious level (like Indy’s bag, I knew there were issues but couldn’t put my finger on it). Great work
Just so you know I loved your Indy 5 review and I personally liked the movie! Your Indiana Jones videos are by far the best I’ve seen! You should do a video on the Indy comics video games and adult novels from the 90s!
the bag strap over the jacket is an issue that bothered me all the way back in Crystal Skull, it was something that to me they just got wrong. However, I have come up with an in universe explanation (more so for in Crystal Skull).....Indy is a smart guy and would learn from his mistakes / experiences. In Last Crusade he rolled off the tank and the bag strap got caught on the gun turret, causing him to hang on for his life as the tank dragged him through the dirt. Being under his jacket, meant that he could not easily get out of the strap. So after this experience he started wearing it over the jacket. Just a vague explanation. But I still don't like the look of it over the jacket.
I hate that tie. To my mind he only wore it around his father because, subconsciously, he was trying to win his father's approval and appear respectable. For him to wear it in subsequent films makes zero sense to me.
I’m just curious are you saying Indy’s look in temple of Doom and last crusade is bad? Because he looked like an absolute chad in temple with the one sleeved look in my opinion. In last crusade I like the tie he wore for his father I thought it was nice touch. I think he looked good in temple and crusade, just not as refined as raiders. Does that mean it’s bad?
I said it was sloppy. I said it looks worse than Raiders. I don't care what you personally like or are willing to tolerate. And the one sleeve has NOTHING to do with the complete outfit. You're referring to the outfit DAMAGED at the end. I'm referring to the ACTUAL PIECES used throughout the film. You're not even in the correct conversation.
I still wish for Dial of Destiny (besides trying to make a good movie) they had Indy’s look reflect his age - dress him more like his dad - a scholarly academic - and give him the eye patch from the Young Indy Chronicles. But you know, that doesn’t work on a poster 🙄
I would still absolutely love to see another sequel, in which Ford is now playing the Henry Jones sr. style scholar-dad role to Ke Huy Quan's Short Round who's now an adventurer treasure hunter in his own right.
I do think a lot of your complaints about Indy's outfit in Dial of Destiny amount to not liking the updates they did deliberately to bring him more into a 1960s world. The shirt, for example, is clearly a deliberate choice. You even point out yourself that they included something approximating the original shirt in the flashback, only to replace it for the 1969 period. Which only makes sense, he wouldn't wear the exact same shirt for 30 plus years, that's absurd.
That's a really cool green variation of the shirt at the beginning of the video. I would not mind getting one of them. Attention to detail is always important. The satchel strap under the jacket is something that those making the new Indiana Jones game also seem to have missed as well going by what was seen in the recent trailer for it. It is all the more bizarre when the game attempts to recreate that scene from behind him at the beginning of Raiders. How did they miss that the strap was under the jacket? As the game is set between Raiders and Last Crusade it makes no sense why Indy would wear the satchel strap over the jacket. Then again it never made any sense why he would ever wear it over the jacket in any of the later movies either. It is pretty sad that Harrison Ford himself never seemed to have pointed out this either when wearing the outfit in the later movies. I always liked the look of the jacket in Raiders and Temple of Doom as it looked like it had been lived in for many years where as in Last Crusade and Kingdom it was a lot puffier and like something that had just been bought off the shelf and weathered a bit. It was not shaped to his body and that jacket should be like a second skin on him. It also looked slightly oversized on him in Raiders which it never did in any of the other movies.
I never felt it was oversized in Raiders. It was just a tight fit but not too tight. In the other ones it looked a little looser but look how many times costumes change in movies. Take for instance Friday the 13th. I know it's a low budget horror movie but the mask and look of Jason changed with each subsequent film. The same with Michael Myers mask. I liked The Dial Of Destiny but I never understood why they made the whip black just very odd. Great video by the way. Love the attention to detail.
Retroblasting always makes the best Indy content!! Micheal is a pro That’s why it’s sad to see the Indy Gear website lose its domain Though Micheal is no longer a contributor But your work was very informative none the less on that page
I know you said no headcanon, but I just figured it was never supposed to be taken as one set of clothes throughout the entire span of the movies. Indy gets the crap beat out of him in his adventures and he probably goes through clothes constantly. We see how destroyed his clothes get in Temple of Doom and then they're brand new again in Raiders. And there's no hole in his jacket in Last Crusade from where he gets shot in the arm during the truck chase in Raiders. The guy probably goes through clothes all the time and maybe sometimes can't find the exact same stuff, especially if he's in different countries and all, so he just finds something close. Even the hat. Getting them wet all the time like does really kinda ruins hats like those so he probably went through a few of those too. Just the way always kinda thought of it. Good video though. I obsessively researched which jacket to get before I finally decided on the Todd's Costumes one because it looked the most like the Raiders jacket and it's my favorite one so I noticed the differences in the different movie costumes too lol.
When did I ever say I believed all of his clothes were the same ones movie too movie? Making your star in your film LOOK GOOD is my point. Methinks you're eating your own tail trying to parse my comments.
One thing that stands out is the pinch on the fedora got smaller and smaller in each film. I always thought he started wearing the shoulder strap over the jacket because of the tank scene in Last Crusade...well thats how I justified it. lol. And of course Disney takes away the gun. ugggh. Remember a hat is for keeping the sun out of your eyes....yiu wear a fedora for adventure. Great video thank you.
I’ve watched the 4 hour review twice and this dude nailed everything to the wall and then whipped it well. What a great job of even putting something like that together. 💥💥💥👍
Very good analysis overall, and I'm aware you said ignore Headcanon, but I thought it was well established he wears the gas mask bag outside his jacket POST Crusade because of the Tank fiasco? I feel that's the only excusable thing
@@timothyward8695I suppose so but it makes logical sense. Although it isn't spelled out to the viewers the design is clear enough to show he learned from that, although Indy films are supposed to be serials, it does show some development of character which lasts longer than a film
Its like blue jeans today or jean jackets or Carhartt jacket. Levi's may look similar today but are different. They changed the material a few years back to a stretching material and the cuts are not exactly what we might have had when we were younger. Carhartt for example made a Detroit esienhower cut jacket that i used to buy. They have now changed to oversea manufactors and deleted the waist adjustment straps on the sides. I just assumed that the type of jacket indy wore was available in different cuts , lengths etc. He owns several and used them all from time to time. I personally have 5 jackets i wear to work and they are all the same size and exactly rhe same jacket. Just different colors and none fit exaclty the same. This applys tonthe pants/shirt/shoes/holster. The hat is a different story. At any rate i dont think about it too much. Its his look. Sloppy or not it's still rhe same general look...
I happen to love the gags about his classic outfit in the other movies, and I even like that each film's look has it's own subtle differences (although the Raiders hat really is unbeatable). But your points about the lack of care in DoD's look are spot on. One thing you didn't touch on, but really bugs me: for some reason, they kind of switched the color hues of the shirt and pants. The shirt now goes towards a yellowish regular khaki tone, while the pants are almost grey... even the hat ribbon is the same tone as the hat felt, losing that contrast between a brown hat and an almost black ribbon. Anyway, great video, specially for those of us who pay attention to that kind of stuff.
This video is spot on but I couldn’t stop looking at your display case. I’m now going make a similar one in my toy/comic book room inspired after yours
Did anyone else think that Indy started wearing his satchel strap outside his jacket post-Last Crusade because of how it nearly got him killed during the tank chase where he was dangling from the turret and couldn't slide out of it? Either way though, I'm absolutely not in favor of him wearing the satchel strap outside the jacket, it really does affect the look of the outfit overall. Unfortunately, the new upcoming Indy game continues this trend, ugh...
Why did I watch this??? Damn I wasn’t this depressed since that dial of nonsense’s credits rolled… I agree with everything… pointed out some of these details myself to my wife… she looked at me weirdly 😂
Always knew there was something about Indy's hat in Raiders... It's edges looked sharp and lighter than in the sequels. Also missed the gloves, but I guess Indy only wears it on excavations, which he never did after Raiders. With that said, I think Temple of Doom had the 2nd best take on the costume. Sure the jacket draped and the whip was all over the place, but it really fits in the atmosphere of the movie. It's almost like Fred C. Dobbs from "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre" (1948). Raiders went for a more clean, confident look, Temple of Doom went in a more deliberately sloppy direction, being the only movie where his attire gets absolutely trashed. It really brings out how much Indy was struggling through the 2nd half of the movie.
The bag is on the outside of the jacket because he got hung up by it on that tank gun in Last Crusade. Not sure how he managed that. Also, the movies span 34 years. The stuff he wore in ‘35/‘36 was probably not available for purchase in ‘57 or ‘69. On a side note, the KotCS hat bash is my second favorite behind Raiders.
All I wanted from the most recent movie was Indy teaming up with Short Round to find Mutt and then him retiring with Marion and passing the Torch it Short Round and Mutt. Hell they could’ve even recast Mutt with Miles Teller.
It is truly tragic what has transpired with this character. Only a Gen X NT could possibly notice these differences and be so inclined to express these observations in a such a painstakingly detailed format. From one Gen X NT to another, I applaud your efforts Sir. As always, your videos are greatly appreciated.
Michael your Indiana Jones Dial Of Dysentery review essay is one of the greatest pieces of content that has ever been uploaded to TH-cam. If anyone that hasn’t watched it reads this post, you’re committing a crime on yourself for not watching it.
What a great video and it proves I'm not going mad. It was Last Crusade when I first thought his outfit looked ever so slightly differently. I didn't notice it in Temple because Indy really gets roughed up through that film and the hat & jacket aren't even worn for big parts,by the way I adore Temple. It was last Crusdae again which I adore, that I just felt something was off,Indy looked ever so slightly different and this video proves it. Both Crystal Skull and Destiny shows even more signs of the costume not being the same. I could never quite put my finger on why or what the reasons were but this explains it so well. Thank you for this.
I like the Raiders look best, too-but I feel like Indy having that exact shirt on 50 years later would raise more questions than it answers. I really enjoy (most of) the variations. 🤷♂️
I knew it was new, but did you upload this short one before or totally new today? I could swear I saw the thumbnail earlier and meant to watch it. But my mind could be playing tricks, of course. LOVED the long form Indy 5 review!@@retroblasting
one main things that perturbed me was the setting of Dial in the 60s. With Harrisons Age it should be been late 70s or early 80s. Imagine Indy in the disco era! Fighting neo Nazis on the disco floor.
The different guns I can understand. In Temple of Doom Willie throws his gun out the car window which explains why it's a different model in Raiders. For Last Crusade, speculation on my part, he may have lost it aboard the Vasquez de Coronado while retrieving the Cross of Coronado. As for the different shirt in Dial of Destiny, 25 years have passed since we last see the shirt in 1944. Clothing like shirts and pants don't last like leather jackets do. Especially after repeated use the way Jones did. And I don't know what it was like back in 69 when the movie took place, but I know I can't walk into a walmart and buy a shirt style from 1999.
I pointed out the missing pistol many times myself. I had a hunch they would pull this, as I noticed they were trying to distance him from his pistol in Skull- but At least they acknowledged its existence there. If I had to guess, the lack of bullwhip use was a similar studio mandate for similar reasons… bullwhip connotations and all… Disney being afraid of some snarky comments on twitters and such.
I'm surprised that you didn't mention the bullet cut on his left side of his jacket that he gets in that flashback in DOD on the train in 1944. Then he has it again (same jacket) in the rest of the film in 1969. However he doesn't have the bullet cut in Krystal skull on his jacket despite it taking place before DOD. Yeah, you could say it's a different jacket but still just figured I'd mention it.
Another point is that the dial would have not fit inside the gas mask without altering the inside of the bag since it has a division inside and several pockets to store small things. Great analysis of the costume . Love your Fedora!
Great video. Great attention to detail. Also, you can really pull off that fedora. I guess I never thought about Indy's outfit as a costume. I always thought of it as the wardrobe selection of a gruff, matter of fact adventurer. Pieces selected for practicality. Hat for shade, jacket for warmth, gun for protection, satchel for carrying artifacts, bull whip...got me there. But I see your point. Also, talking about costumes maybe Melissa and Conrad can put together a Dreamland episode contrasting American and British popular 80's costumes. Thanks for the video.
Great Video! I've been harping on about these very issues since Last Crusade! I don't subscribe to the "same costume carried over for all 5 films" theory. Its just silly. Heck In Raiders Indy left his fedora and satchel on the Bantu Wind! So I guess Indy would have had different Fedoras, jackets, Shirts, boots and everything else over time. But would it have killed the Dial of Destiny Wardrobe Dept to at least fit out Ford with clothes that actually fit him! It is however the least of the films problems. You were spot on!
Attention to detail and care notwithstanding, would you say the reason why the leather jacket got bigger and the rest of his wardrobe fitting him differently is due to Harrison Ford's body changing as the years went on? While still looking like himself from 1981 to 1989, Ford does physically look a bit different in terms of age and body mass. He will look drastically different in 2008, more so in 2022-23.
Nailed it. The Raiders costume is perfect. The subsequent films are an ever degrading facsimile of the original. I always preferred the colour of the last crusade pants is my only concession, but not enough to change the Raiders costume
Great job breaking it down. I don’t find anything you said that I disagree with. I would make mention that the fedoras shrunk on the plane due to the heat in Sri Lanka. Great review!
What happened to Indiana Jones's Costume. Well, first of all Disney got a hold of it, second Disney is a cheapskate, these people can't write, direct, make a proper movie. Just say they can't do anything at all. My suggestion is, just abandon it all, ignore Disney, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and whatever they fuck up. I'm really kinda done with this BS and there sense of making good things into very bad things. Eveyone just tell Disney to KISS MY TIARA. PS. Good video as always and solid topic.
@@bb5242 Thank You, I mean almost an decade, how can they make such demeaning movies, our lousy sense of entertainment. This is just getting badder and worser then before. Very disapointed in 1 company Disney.
As someone who dabbles in 3d modeling I've seen over the years what happens if a modeler gets a period costume wrong. Especially if its a military uniform. You're going to hear from people including veterans. Its not enough to guess or assume, you've got to approximate.
i did an indy cosplay for halloween and i did only one belt *time constraints* it wasn’t bad but wasn’t fun, the holster and whip weighed my belt/pants down weird
I'd always been aware that there were differences in the Indy costume over the course of the various films. They just seemed to get more... sloppy looking. But the actual "Why?" was lost on me. This was a master class on why. Thank you for this.
I think the hat problems stem from the fact that he was supposed to lose it in Raiders and thus it didn’t matter if he had the same one in Temple of Doom but by The Last Crusade the hat was synonymous with Indy so it was established as something he’d always had in that film, which led to this inconsistency.
Those moronic Hasbro guys! That is as much whip like as a rolled up towel, the crack of a bull whip is quite literally thunder as controlled by man. A freaking sonic boom is made (as Michael can tell you) a 80 year old with Harrison Ford's acting chops can crack a whip! My mom could of cracked one and she was handicapped.

They're all like cartoon movies. Serials from yester-year. To me, it makes more sense to keep the outfit the same. Even in my non-cartoonish life, I'm still rocking the same boots, wallet chain, jacket, etc. that I've had for a very long time. If I had a quintessential adventure outfit, you bet it would stay the same. So anytime I need to replace something, I'm getting the same style item. Or you could look at it like Indy isn't OCD or sentimental (but they're definitely kinda sentimental), and doesn't care certain things have changed.

But I hear ya man on what you were saying regarding your dad's uniform. It's still awesome Harrison is in the shape they are. I know/have known plenty of guys a good bit younger than them that seem like they're decades older than Ford. My father's the same age as Harrison, has just about the same body as they did 40 years ago, and goes on a walk everyday after getting up. Oh yeah. A fourth and fifth Indy movie made in the '90s would've been the way to go. Instead of The Fugitive and Air Force One, in an alternate universe, we got more _'Harrison still in his prime'_ Indiana Jones movies. Who knows why this wasn't done, 'cause I'm quite sure they had a few good scripts lying around at the time.
I hope in the next Batman film they cut his ears off so he can look as ridiculous as Indy 5. Who needs costume continuity or good sense.
You know I am not mad at this outfit, the one thing I am mad about is that Indy did not have the gun shot stitch on his left arm jacket for every single movie.!
Did he have it for Indy 5?

Most people change their style to keep up with the times a little, at least. There's no reason why an educated man like Indiana Jones would not have ditched the 1930s fashions.
One of the most ridiculous things about the last film was Indy carrying his outfit inside a bag like he was Spiderman or something.
You mean, clothes in luggage when you're traveling on a commercial airline? Not that far fetched.
@@planetofsoundpodcast9859 no, I mean like a superhero´s uniform and not his regular clothes.
"I'm selling these fine leather jackets."
It really is, no doubt. I like the photoshop of the Raiders hat on the Last Crusade outfit.
Ehh I do feel Temple Of Dooms outfit is also a solid natural look, especially towards the end
I can't unsee this. Everything degrades away from the source material. You are hilariously specific!
Indy put his bag on top of his jacket after the last crusade tank battle to avoid a repeat of that fiasco I like to think.
Also, I think last crusade is the indys best look. The boxy jacket and tie looks great imo
Nah Indy in Ravens bars with the jacket done up is the coolest look
It bears repeating. As for myself, in the early days, I never assumed that the outfit was supposed to look the same, given the wear and tear that had to be part of his life, but of course that was before they made the hat part of his origin. For one story, at least.
I believe Disney try to cover up the lack of the gun by switching the placement of the shoulder bag to the right side, or sadder yet they just did not care. So sad, just an observation. Thanks for upload a edited version.
All of which was done with Mr Ford's approval
This is gonna be a good one. I just feel it.!!!!! retro blasting you are my favorite TH-camr, and I am so glad you are covering this topic.
Man, every time Retroblasting drops a video, it feels like a present.
I thanked you for the breakdown of this outfit in the original review and I have to thank you for this re-edit again
Well if you remember, he was on the run and only brought what could be grabbed by Salalah. So what's all he had.
That has NOTHING to do with the quality of the items provided by Disney for the outfit NOR the way they were arranged on his person for the film itself. Are you.... inebriated or something?
@@retroblasting I could be
I'm drunk on my love for you!
As someone that has had an "Raiders" full outfit, you're totally on point.
Your attention to detail on Indy's costume is nothing short of meticulous!!! I too noticed gradual changes in Indy's outfit, but could never put my finger on it (I simply assumed through the first three films they were each different outfits.)
Thank you for giving this issue such clarity and focus on why costuming is SO important to a character...particularly one this iconic!! The slop factor on the costume for Indy 5 is inexcusable!!
I just get such joy out of seeing Michael in his Indy or Bespin Han outfits. He really wears them well.
Ah cool! Always love your passion and eye for detail, Michael.
WOW! Great breakdown of Indy's outfits! I had no idea they had changed so much. Love the videos!
Nice Raiders attire at the end. You could use some weathering tho lol
An excellent re-edit of footage taken from the superb Indiana Jones 5 review video, Michael.
I do hope this video re-edit whets the appetite of newcomers and encourages them to watch the full version of Michael's Indy 5 Mega review video.
I never watched Indy 5 even though I have Disney+, yet I did watch a 4 hour review about it 😂
@pendaco, May I ask, why didn't you watch Dial Of Destiny and, would you watch it?
@@Jaytee. Mainly because of all the poor reviews. Being let down by Crystal Skull years ago. And frankly after watching Michael's review I felt like I already watched it.
@@pendaco That's a shame that you've not seen the movie. I hope one day you decide to give it a chance. Personally, I really enjoyed it.
One of your best videos.
For a man who used to wear a morral, I can agree on how it should be worn.
Very interesting details you put out there.
Makes me ponder the question, what happened to the OG props from Raiders?
Museums, private collections and the Skywalker Ranch
@@LoneWolf051 Makes me wonder why they didn't just check those out as references before making new props.
Excellent re-edit of part of your Indy 5 review Michael! Also cool to see you in costume! :)
Love the passion. I love your work. Been subbed for awhile. But I gotta say. Suspend your disbelief.
Watch the full length video linked at the end. That gives his opinion on each installment of the series.
Love your content. Long or short form but would enjoy seeing longer in depth reviews of films/series like the Indy 5 review.
Always a pleasure when Retroblasting drops a video. Love it!
Loved your green Indy shirt in the intro! Where’d you get it?
Magnoli Clothiers
I do think a lot of your complaints about Indy's outfit in Dial of Destiny amount to not liking the updates they did deliberately to bring him more into a 1960s world. The shirt, for example, is clearly a deliberate choice. You even point out yourself that they included something approximating the original shirt in the flashback, only to replace it for the 1969 period. Which only makes sense, he wouldn't wear the exact same shirt for 30 plus years, that's absurd.
Oh man... you thought you were coming to one of those channels that panders and pretends to give a fuck about your thoughts... OOPS!
@@retroblasting have you thought of going to therapy because they removed 2 pieces of fabric off your favorite shirt?
Dude! Another spot on video! I thought I was the only one who noticed these details.
Thanks for this, now I can confirm that my adventure series Indi is screen accurate
Retroblasting always makes the best Indy content!! Micheal is a pro
That’s why it’s sad to see the Indy Gear website lose its domain
Though Micheal is no longer a contributor
But your work was very informative none the less on that page
Love your content, and your attention to detail.
Easily the best chapter of that whole mega review. It made me see the other Indy films in a different light and just how perfect his original look was
That video took me three months, has 12 chapters, and goes four 4 hours. Be careful next time how you phrase compliments.
9:34 lmao that impression is spot on, made me laugh
We should start with your stuff. The pistol on your desk or your shirt etc.
Yep. Smith and Wesson M1917. 45 ACP. My dad gave me his. Always called it his Indy gun.
Very good analysis overall, and I'm aware you said ignore Headcanon, but I thought it was well established he wears the gas mask bag outside his jacket POST Crusade because of the Tank fiasco? I feel that's the only excusable thing
_Well_ established? Where? By whom? A _widely accepted_ fan theory?

Thx for this video. Where can I find the mega review?

I love all the little changes to the outfit it's fun to point out what's different
Also if you may what are the hat's that you have in this video
Great video, glad to see more Indi' content
Excellent once again. Thank you.
It is truly tragic what has transpired with this character. Only a Gen X NT could possibly notice these differences and be so inclined to express these observations in a such a painstakingly detailed format. From one Gen X NT to another, I applaud your efforts Sir. As always, your videos are greatly appreciated.

Looking good in the Fedora
one main things that perturbed me was the setting of Dial in the 60s.
And I don't know what it was like back in 69 when the movie took place, but I know I can't walk into a walmart and buy a shirt style from 1999.
at the end when he say's, "he went from this to ...this" anyone else not notice the change. I had to replay it to see what happened, LOL
I like all the looks.
I always just figured that Indy had a few different jackets of the same style and slightly different lengths. And just switch them out every so often.
Sorry, I meant Melinda and Conrand
Great Video!
I've been harping on about these very issues since Last Crusade! I don't subscribe to the "same costume carried over for all 5 films" theory. Its just silly. Heck In Raiders Indy left his fedora and satchel on the Bantu Wind! So I guess Indy would have had different Fedoras, jackets, Shirts, boots and everything else over time. But would it have killed the Dial of Destiny Wardrobe Dept to at least fit out Ford with clothes that actually fit him! It is however the least of the films problems.
You were spot on!
I'm most surprised Diznee let Indy wear leather.
This is why I always obsess about good character design. Even minute details make a big difference in bringing the whole thing together.
Excellent video, Michael.
There are only three Indiana Jones films...
Nailed it. The Raiders costume is perfect. The subsequent films are an ever degrading facsimile of the original.
I always preferred the colour of the last crusade pants is my only concession, but not enough to change the Raiders costume
Did you notice the hole in the jacket in the last film? I thought this was a reference to the first movie, but it's the aftermath of the intro
Great job breaking it down. I don’t find anything you said that I disagree with. I would make mention that the fedoras shrunk on the plane due to the heat in Sri Lanka. Great review!
Very informative thanks
Great Video Michael.
I’m pretty sure Moloram ripped it off Indy. That’s how he got it off. But it doesn’t really make a lot of sense to just that easily rip leather.
