Aikido has the smallest sliver of applicability in actual combat, and is essentially Tai Chi in all other regards, not to mention the fact that Segal verifiably lied about training under the originator of the discipline. @@CadoonTube That's true for almost all of martial arts disciplines that are taught in US, West in general, including Karate, Capoeira and Krav Maga. Just dancing techniques, and never useful in actual self-defense situations, some cases dangerous for the defender.

Steven Seagal has a career in film because of agent Michael Ovitz. Seagal was his trainer back in the 80's when Ovitz was a very powerful agent in hollywood and he pretty much decided he should be an action movie star.

I got a KO on a marine using a front SIDE-kick, that took me years to develop; and I sure didn't learn it from Seagal. But a front kick rarely comes up high enough to score a knockout.
Aikido is essentially designed for unarmed combat in armor. I've studied it for years, and while it is very limited in itself, it does allow a broader understanding of key principles from other arts. I consider it to be my "gateway" art into other systems, other ideas. Take what works, leave what doesn't. (forgive me for the horrible paraphrasing) End of the day, physical conditioning, will to win, and experience matter more than what system you start with.
ACtually the limitations are something Seagal was aware of, hes at the very least also very good trained at win chun (you usually see aikido mixed with win chun in his movies), which is a system that i know for fact is used by special forces, for example the KSK here in Germany. Im not claiming anything more, but thats what i know.
Maybe you can clarify something a bit for me. I’ve heard people say it’s for unarmed combat against armored opponents but aikido was developed in the 20s and 30s. It sounds an awful lot more like they’re describing jiujitsu which was more or less developed over a thousand years ago for that express purpose.
Because he's flat out wrong, Aikido was developed by an old man for self defense against street thugs since he couldn't utilize traditional jujitsu or judo due to his age and disposition.

Did Aikido from 8 years old till 21 years old 4-8 hours a week. It's not good for fighting someone, it's amazing a deflecting an attack so you have the space and time to get the hell out. If I learned anything from martial arts is that getting out of a dangerous situation is always the best thing you can do. You should only fight if the life of your loved ones are at stake. Aikido is a great base to start doing other martials arts from. It's like learning to read notes before playing an instrument.

In Aikido, you don't practice getting good at fighting. In Aikido, you practice becoming good at resolving conflicts, so you don't have to fight. It is primarily an internal job of self awareness. If you choose to look at Aikido as a combatform, it is not Aikido. And for if Steven Seagal is legit? I don´t see his Aikido as the same Aikido which the founder Morihei Ueshiba taught. Just a perspective from a relativ long term Aikido practitioner :-)

Aikido is great if you don't want to hurt your opponent (to avoid lawsuit etc). As a self defense tool against a violent attacker it's pretty useless compared to other martial arts.
Even from an Aikido standpoint, Seagal isn't legit. His motion range is way to short when he does his iriminage. He looks like he just wants to walk by his opponent, this is basic stuf every beginner should learn. If you look at his wrist locks you even see his pupils acting like they feel it but they can escape so easily. There is a reason why the main aikido dojo's say his aikido is crap.

A very high level view on the topic as most of Joe's discussions. This is to be expected from a person that can discuss origami in one show and quantum singularity in another. As a person who studied aikido for 13 years I can confidently say that Seagal was very solid in his prime days. Also most people who reason about aikido effectiveness should first define what exactly they are looking for. For example I may say that a gun is more effective than all martial arts combined but for some reason it doesn't stop people from learning those martial arts and for reasons that include not only kill or win everyone and everything. Aikido has unique philosophical aspects within that help building a balanced personality and a healthy body. Since there's no competition goal trainings are much more cooperative since people view you not as a competitor but a partner in understanding techniques and body mechanics that make those techniques work. Once you properly understood technique you need to spend a lot of time training it - this is no different from any other skill

He's also completely wrong about Segal, his Aikido and Aikido as a martial art, period. His views are very narrow-minded, focusing only from an MMA type of mindset. He picked exactly the opposite clips of Segal to show, as well. Check our the new one from Jesse Encamp "I trained with Steven Seagal for a day" and the videos by Viking Samurai. Also there are several legitimate, older martial arts masters who attest to Seagal's skills. He's a 7th Dan in Ten Shin Aikido, which is the pre-war style and completely aggressive. Joe Rogan may be a nice guy and good mma fighter but his knowledge of martial arts is greatly lacking. You'll find that out for yourself with some research.

He's completely wrong about his abilities because A) He doesn't practice the watered down, Americanized style of Aikido. B) Even the American version doesn't get enough credit. C) He has belts in several different arts, not just Aikido. You need to do a lot more research into Seagal, TenShin style Aikido and not take the common attitude just because it's what others say. I'm not trying to knock you, just to get people to realize that Rogan doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground when it comes to Seagal, Aikido, the different types of Aikido, what's offensive and defensive about Aikido (Ten Shin Aikido is almost all offensive in nature) and he's lost in the MMA mindset that whatever doesn't fit MMA doesn't work. Half the stuff you do in MMA sets you up to get your neck broken or blinded or whatever because, mma has rules. Actual fighting and Ten Shin Aikido doesn't. You have to get your brain out of the ring, into the street and away from what everyone else who doesn't know what they're talking about who keeps saying Aikido isn't a real fighting art, blah blah. @@MtnBadger he was also wrong about the origins of Aikido. Aikido was not invented by samurai to disarm someone with a sword. Ōsensei Morihei Ueshiba literally started out as a practitioner of Daitō-ryū Aiki-jūjutsu, and then studied Tenjin Shinyo-ryu, Yagyū Shingan-ryū, And then Judo. It was from all of these that Aikido was developed with Daitō-ryū Aiki-jūjutsu(what is regarded as the beginnings of modern jujitsu) being the primary foundation of the art. The problems come from the fact that after Ōsensei died many of his students made Aikido progressively softer until it’s what many think of today. Having taken a discipline of Aikido myself that was more inline with what it was originally I can honestly say it can be much more aggressive and functional than what people give it credit for.
@@JCole78 And as Ueshiba got older, the style (particularly in the US) got softer as well. There was a definite split in the philosophy of his teaching from others in Japan, just as there was in Tang Soo Do, when it split and also became Moo Doo Kuan.. Aikido and it's supporting styles you mentioned, in its pre-war form, as used by the Samurai, was to be able to fight if they lost their swords and a lot of the techniques were essentially the same, whether empty handed or with sword, depending upon the strike and physical practicality. Meaning thry weren't "just strikes," they had pattern and practice of the same intent. There's a lot more to the style, particularly TenShin Aikido, than most people realize.

Did judo years ago when I was in school,went up to a green belt almost brown. Now I don't remember very much but every once in awhile I fall and land painlessly or someone comes towards me and instinctively throw them down. All judo stuff buried in the back of my head. It usually takes a second before I realize some part of that training just popped up and it is very obvious what it was from when it happens. Always a little amazed its there and its like an instinct

Joe is a serious beast in his own right... He has spent many hours on the mats. As many or more on the mats against top level competitors, as he has on the comedy stage, TV, and the bong combined... Okay throwing the bong in there may have made it questionable.lol Joe is a beast though, and, I believe, still holds records from his youth and early days as a competition strike fighter. Don't quote me on that though. Steven Seagal is more than just an Aikido fighter, and to pigeonhole him as such, I feel would be a grave mistake. If you know much about martial arts, you can see a mixture and variation of multiple styles and disciplines combined into one fluid moving and fairly effective style of his own. You can see styles such as Wing Chun, Hapkido throws and stop kicks techniques, judo, as well as hints of Chin Na, all combined with Aikido, minus the BS extra nonsense steps, to make what you're actually seeing when watching Steven Seagal. Granted much of it is completely choreographed and set for the big screen. However broken down, with the excess bullshit thrown aside and adapted for the streets, it can be used as quite the effective self defense in most cases in a street style situation. Granted, this is my opinion, and to be taken as just that. One man's opinion. What training I have and where from doesn't really matter, this is just the opinion of a man who decided many years ago to give up martial arts and focus on bull riding instead. Styles shouldn't fit the fighters, the fighters should fit the styles. Bruce Lee had no style and trained as if he didn't. He didn't master styles, he mastered himself. Bruce Lee was the first on record to see martial arts as self expression, he did not believe in a art that dictates the artist. Bruce Lee was a TRUE marital artist.
@@SovereignStatesman Jeet kune do isn't a style, it's a fighting expression of ones own ability that fits them. If fighters fight without any specific style then they are in fact using Jeet kune do. The very reason why Bruce created Jeet kune do was to unlimit the limited in styles. Some people just can't grasp that concept, and like Bruce said, styles limit ones true potential of what they could be.
@@SovereignStatesman JKD was never intended for tournament style fighting. It was about incapacitating your opponent. If you can find a legitimate teacher its worth learning, too many fakes out there. You can't cross-stomp someone breaking their leg in the octagon. The book he wrote Tao of Jeet Kune Do covers very little of the style itself.
I've seen at least 5 people use JKD in the UFC and all of them were totally mangled. Bruce was inspirational but he was not a pro fighter and against a pro he would not bring much to the table. Like I said though he inspired a ton of people including myself.
Not picking sides, but Joe talks like he understands what Aikido is then says during clip of Seagal doing "kendo" Joe says, "maybe they use swords." Aikido does use swords, empty hand, and poles or staff. Like any martial art, it is not about the martial art, but the practitioner. MMA was meant for the ring, with rules, Aikido was meant for real life, no rules.
Except Aikido isn't a traditional martial art, it's an imitation, hence the "-do" suffix. Traditional Japanese martial arts use the "-jutsu" suffix, and even then they were part of a school and should have the school's name attached to them. For example Katori Shinto-ryu jujutsu varies from Yagyu Shingan-ryu jujutsu. Same with their kenjutsu and sojutsu etc, and other schools' martial arts vary from theirs.
@@red5llaw Karate is not a traditional Japanese martial art, it is an Okinawan martial art. Might sound like mere semantics, but prior to the Meiji Restoration Okinawa was the Ryukyu Kingdom and not part of Japan proper. Though Japan did make Okinawa a vassal state of the Satsuma domain during the Edo period, they were prohibited from practicing Japanese martial arts or culture and had more in common with China. In turn traditional, historical karate has more in common with Chinese wushu than Japanese bujutsu. The founder of Shotokan karate-do, Gichin Funakoshi, explicitly describes this in his autobiography. Yes, Aikido training does involve bokken (wooden sword) and jo (short staff). It is a martial arts without any competition training, not meant for sparring either. It mainly deals with holds, locks and spectacular throws and falls.

During the 90s, I felt Steven Seagal had a pretty good standing as far as being among the martial artists who can in "real life" hurt someone. He's no different than any of the other stars at the time. Only problem is that he got old and out of shape and I don't think he looks very intimidating any longer at all. His movies are him sitting down or barely moving and somehow everyone's necks are snapping and arms are breaking. It's kind of like what Van Damme said of him when asked about Steven coming on for the Expendables movie that he should lose some weight, not to poke fun of him, but because he could be able to appear as bad as he was in the 80s and 90s and he can move around and do moves and stunts that he used to.

I’ve practiced Aikido for 7 years (not many in Aikido terms). My advice for anyone that wants to learn to fight is to search elsewhere. While certain techniques have practical application, in my opinion that is not the purpose for practicing Aikido. This I say to Aikidoists who argue with people on videos such as this one about how much it can be used to kick ass. They are missing the mark, just as those that say it is trash are. Aikido is focused inward. It is about gaining mastery over the self, learning your center of balance, learning how to control your entire body, being aware of your entire body and how it interacts with another. The benefits can spread to the rest of ones life. The learning curve is Very steep. I practice with new people all the time who have done other martial arts and their self control is limited, people that box or do jiujitsu. They flail about and can only clash with force and muscle. I am physically stronger than my Sensei but he can move me with little physical effort even if I am resisting with all my strength. This is not mumbo-jumbo, giving it up for the old man. It is decades of experience. He is moving where I cannot resist, outside of where my strength can be brought to bear. It is not mystical. It is physics, understanding of the bones, muscles, and balance of the human body. Aikido is both physical and philosophical. Both aspects must be studied. It is a martial art but it is also the art of peace. Is an art that strives to do no harm to the attacker practical? Maybe not. But is there a benefit in the struggle toward such a lofty goal? I have seen it in my own life in abundance.
V Power Thank you. One of the cool things about Aikido is that, while it is based on very old arts, it is itself very new. My Sensei’s teacher was a direct student of O Sensei, the founder of Aikido. So he can tell stories of those people and that time and his techniques are very fundamental and very close to what O Sensei was teaching.
Grahamhg Don’t know if I agree with the terms kata/forms but it is true that there is no competition. Basically you practice the techniques with a partner, usually four times each, back and forth. Different dojo practice in different ways as far as how much resistance the attacker is using. Some places are very soft and some are very martial, leaning more to old aiki-jujitsu. Where I practice is in the middle and it depends on who is practicing with who. But the only kata I’ve done is a jo kata and that is not technically considered Aikido.
Aikido is about (humbly) evading and neutralizing threats - true pacifism - developed during a rough, violent time in Japan where the primary weapon of choice was still the katana. If anything, it was pretty revolutionary (for them at the time) and under appreciated. We westerners look at the Japanese fondly now as silly ppl who love video games and Hello Kitty but forget that before WWII they were a deadly world power that had a brutal, cruel and rigid feudal social structure.
Aikido isn't meant to hurt people. It's meant to find peace, and to disarm while protecting your attacker. The Walking Dead had an episode called 'Here's Not Here' and it was about how Morgan learned Aikido and was able to heal from losing his son. Steven Seagal has always abused and misused Aikido. You're not supposed to hurt your opponent, in Aikido you're actually protecting them from hurting themselves in their attack. Aikido is a beautiful and spiritual thing to learn. not for fighting and hurting others.
Aikido is quite literally a wartime martial art. It's definitely intended to strip away a weapon from someone and then end them with it. As much as sagal is an ass he is putting forth the effort to revive the version of aikido that was not worthless trash.
I taught full contact Tae Kwon Do and Hapkido for many years. Aikido is similar to Hapkido. The purpose behind these martial arts is balance. They are used in addition to full contact forms of fighting. Knowing and using only one is something like putting a snake in a box with one side missing. It's a skill that does not stand alone, but is still a legitimate skill. I'm a grandmother in her 60's now with a pretty significant physical disability. And I'm a pretty small person. However, the decades of martial arts training and teaching that I have still define my ability to survive most attacks. If you're looking to define a martial art by full contact fighting in the ring, you would be misunderstanding the nature of martial arts. Each technique that you learn in martial arts is another tool in your toolbox that you may need to use sometime in the future. There is a lot of ego centric reasoning and thinking that goes into the way men, especially those who are not trained martial artists, view these skills. Martial arts is not about ego and ring fighting. It's about fighting technique and survival. Hapkido and Aikido are formidable tools when used by someone who is adept at these martial arts. Don't be fooled by Steven Seagal flowing around a room giving "clean" demonstrations on prepared students. That is not what real Hapkido or Aikido actually looks like in a real attack because it can easily be followed up with very simple kill strikes, something that you will never experience or witness in a fighting ring.

Most of people today compare all to UFC MMA and forget that there is a bell and rules. They also forget that karate got deadly techs like hitting someones nose bone in, they forget that BJJ comes from Judo comes from Japanse JiuJitsu without the deadly techniques, they forgot that Taekwondo is also a competition form of tangsoodo which was used by korean military and mostly all formes come from chineses kung fu forms like shaolin kung fu that never really was showed by inner monks who kept the most important secrets a secret so are the few rare footages of shaolin like fighters already impressive and the real traditional fighters will never enter a ring or octagon for money as it is ruining the spirit of the conntection between fighting and soul. People these days dont care about it and compare all martial arts with the style a roided up MMA fighter does. Its truly sad.

Funny thing about akido. Katana v katana was extremly rare. It only happened in duels and in most senaios both guys get fatially wounded. There is a saying in japan that all samurais abide by. The katana only comes out if you want to die. Or as a last resort. Most battles were fought with ari ashigaru ( butchered that spelling probably) which translated means peasant spearman. The spears were a cross spear with a long spike at the end and a cross tip as well. Samurai were more horse archers than anything else. You would never find samurais fighting with katana in battles unless they are going to die anyways due to their horse dieing. The time katanas were used generally is in duels like a gun duel in western movies. So the application of akido is a completly made up one. Disarming a sword when you dont have a sword wouldnt happen. Your more likley to be killed by a panio than being attacked by a katana when ur unarmed. And in duels you wont be able to disarm the opponent if ur disarmed because u would have died already.

what if you're caught without your sword? Katana are sharp along one edge only (and tip)... you absolutely can disarm an attacker armed with a Katana. Especially, if you are well trained and conditioned to do so, as the Samurai were. That said... I prefer Wakizashi as close combat is more likely if you are ambushed... not that I ever carry mine in public or even around at home... most people just use guns for self defense these days anyway.
@@dougefresh8029 he doesn't though, there are entire branches (read: many separate martial arts) under the umbrella of "iaido" whose entire point is to respond rapidly to surprise attacks (which were common, and never considered dishonorable--if anything it was dishonorable to be caught off guard, not to be the one doing the catching). These techniques almost all focus on rapidly drawing the katana while responding to what the assailant is doing. The one he's right about is that you'd only draw your sword if you're prepared to die in the outcome, but this is not as special as it sounds because Bushido is quite literally "the Way of Death" as much as it is "Way of the Warrior". To quote Hagakure, "a man should resign himself to death every day before breakfast, in doing this he may live as though he is already dead and when the time comes he will not hesitate to die." He's quite wrong that most duels were to the death, they were usually to first blood as in Europe with sabre duels. Rapier duels on the other hand were nasty business. Not many old rapier duelists.

In Aikido there are a lot of punch! A lot! It's very legit mate, and can be brutal, even lethal. So no, aikido wasn't created to disarm Japanese swordsmen. Yes, it was created based on traditional martial arts, mostly Daitoryu Aikijujutsu. Sokako Takeda was his main sensei. There is such thing as transferring energy because Ronda did it on Miesha when Miesha would try to take her down. The thing is the person has to be 100% committed to taking you down. In many of those videos those people are just letting the teacher throw them which actually defends the throw. It ends up looking like bad acting because them being loose defends the throw but they fall down because they don't want to embarrass the teacher.

The "Old guy" is Kyuzo Mifune an original student of Jigoro Kano, the founder of judo and after him is still considered to be the best judo technician ever.
@@treroney4720 they are apart in that Kyuzo Mifune died in 1965 and would be 135 years old today. The Gracies, to best of my knowledge took some judo techniques and "perfected" them creating a practice a lot more focused on fighting on the ground and submission techniques. A good example of this are the differences in scoring in both judo and Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

It's not a fight for competition, but more a presentation of work. Those videos are TRAINING... if you train, you obviously do not hurt your partner. I remember in 1994 when I guy I was stationed with, tried to get me to go to his Judo class. I wasn't interested in that style of Martial Arts, but I do remember him saying that Steven Seagal was legit back then....that was about 4-5 years before the internet blew up.

From my understanding the critical acclaim about being "the first American to teach in Japan" was highly predicated on the fact that other Japanese dojos wouldn't teach Americans that didn't speak Japanese. Also; it was his Japanese FATHER IN LAW that ran a dojo who allowed Steven to teach Americans. Most notably; American military personnel. This is what added to the perceived legitimacy of his claims and (imo) probably the beginning of his fascination with the armed service , inspiring his stories as being part of it. While that was probably a huge boon to his legend , in reality ; it’s kind of a overstated minor anecdote. He may have been the first American to teach but that’s because of his connection and the fact that nobody else would do it. Bro. It wasn't like a council of Japanese Aikido masters sat down in a pagoda hidden deep in the woods surrounded by candles and incense to have a chit-chat about it. Joe is basically right from what I have seen. I would venture to say that there are some specific things taught in aikido and related martial arts that are pretty useful, but it's a bit of a strange martial art. I also agree with Joe's analysis of, and I paraphrase, 'the techniques are more useful if you have tremendous physical attributes.' That would be my take away on that one. It can be a good addition to already existing training in grappling, wrestling, judo and martial arts as a whole though.
The man in the video is Kyuzo Mifune recognized as the greatest judo technition that ever lived. After recieving his shodan (1rst black), he was never thrown again. The black belts in this video (none of which, were under 4th dan) were trying their very best to throw him. None succeeded. The entire video is definitely worth watching.
The Steven Segal story is fascinating. He’s a wonderful con artist. The story is really amazing! Yeah, he taught in Japan. He married a rich Japanese lady and it was her school. And, he ran it into the ground and used that marriage to meet someone in Hollywood then married that girl because she could do different things for his career. And he just kept going. It’s REALLY interesting.

when i took judo lessons as a kid i loved doing the foot sweep move, i just spammed that everytime, much to the annoyance of my sparing partners who would fall on the ground. I was 11 and had to fight highschoolers though, so they were taking it easy on me for the most part haha

Aikido is essentially designed for unarmed combat in armor. I've studied it for years, and while it is very limited in itself, it does allow a broader understanding of key principles from other arts. I consider it to be my "gateway" art into other systems, other ideas. Take what works, leave what doesn't. (forgive me for the horrible paraphrasing)
End of the day, physical conditioning, will to win, and experience matter more than what system you start with.
ACtually the limitations are something Seagal was aware of, hes at the very least also very good trained at win chun (you usually see aikido mixed with win chun in his movies), which is a system that i know for fact is used by special forces, for example the KSK here in Germany. Im not claiming anything more, but thats what i know.

Because he's flat out wrong, Aikido was developed by an old man for self defense against street thugs since he couldn't utilize traditional jujitsu or judo due to his age and disposition.

Did Aikido from 8 years old till 21 years old 4-8 hours a week. It's not good for fighting someone, it's amazing a deflecting an attack so you have the space and time to get the hell out. If I learned anything from martial arts is that getting out of a dangerous situation is always the best thing you can do. You should only fight if the life of your loved ones are at stake.
Aikido is a great base to start doing other martials arts from. It's like learning to read notes before playing an instrument.

Aikido is great if you don't want to hurt your opponent (to avoid lawsuit etc). As a self defense tool against a violent attacker it's pretty useless compared to other martial arts.

Even from an Aikido standpoint, Seagal isn't legit. His motion range is way to short when he does his iriminage. A very high level view on the topic as most of Joe's discussions. This is to be expected from a person that can discuss origami in one show and quantum singularity in another. As a person who studied aikido for 13 years I can confidently say that Seagal was very solid in his prime days. Also most people who reason about aikido effectiveness should first define what exactly they are looking for. For example I may say that a gun is more effective than all martial arts combined but for some reason it doesn't stop people from learning those martial arts and for reasons that include not only kill or win everyone and everything. Aikido has unique philosophical aspects within that help building a balanced personality and a healthy body. Since there's no competition goal trainings are much more cooperative since people view you not as a competitor but a partner in understanding techniques and body mechanics that make those techniques work. Once you properly understood technique you need to spend a lot of time training it - this is no different from any other skill

There is so much stuff on the internet about Steven Seagal that Joe could have brought up and made fun of-- instead Joe stays on topic and analyzes Aikido. No cheap shots. Joe has class.
He's also completely wrong about Segal, his Aikido and Aikido as a martial art, period. His views are very narrow-minded, focusing only from an MMA type of mindset. He picked exactly the opposite clips of Segal to show, as well. Check our the new one from Jesse Encamp "I trained with Steven Seagal for a day" and the videos by Viking Samurai.
Also there are several legitimate, older martial arts masters who attest to Seagal's skills. He's a 7th Dan in Ten Shin Aikido, which is the pre-war style and completely aggressive. Joe Rogan may be a nice guy and good mma fighter but his knowledge of martial arts is greatly lacking. You'll find that out for yourself with some research.

You need to do a lot more research into Seagal, TenShin style Aikido and not take the common attitude just because it's what others say. I'm not trying to knock you, just to get people to realize that Rogan doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground when it comes to Seagal, Aikido, the different types of Aikido, what's offensive and defensive about Aikido (Ten Shin Aikido is almost all offensive in nature) and he's lost in the MMA mindset that whatever doesn't fit MMA doesn't work. Half the stuff you do in MMA sets you up to get your neck broken or blinded or whatever because, mma has rules. Actual fighting and Ten Shin Aikido doesn't. You have to get your brain out of the ring, into the street and away from what everyone else who doesn't know what they're talking about who keeps saying Aikido isn't a real fighting art, blah blah.
Forget Seagal for a minute... There's a young Asian kid in Japan with an Aikido channel on the Tube, check him out, too. Have fun, take care.

Ōsensei Morihei Ueshiba literally started out as a practitioner of Daitō-ryū Aiki-jūjutsu, and then studied Tenjin Shinyo-ryu, Yagyū Shingan-ryū, And then Judo. It was from all of these that Aikido was developed with Daitō-ryū Aiki-jūjutsu(what is regarded as the beginnings of modern jujitsu) being the primary foundation of the art. The problems come from the fact that after Ōsensei died many of his students made Aikido progressively softer until it’s what many think of today. Having taken a discipline of Aikido myself that was more inline with what it was originally I can honestly say it can be much more aggressive and functional than what people give it credit for.
@@JCole78 And as Ueshiba got older, the style (particularly in the US) got softer as well. There was a definite split in the philosophy of his teaching from others in Japan, just as there was in Tang Soo Do, when it split and also became Moo Doo Kuan..
Aikido and it's supporting styles you mentioned, in its pre-war form, as used by the Samurai, was to be able to fight if they lost their swords and a lot of the techniques were essentially the same, whether empty handed or with sword, depending upon the strike and physical practicality. Meaning thry weren't "just strikes," they had pattern and practice of the same intent.
There's a lot more to the style, particularly TenShin Aikido, than most people realize.

Now I don't remember very much but every once in awhile I fall and land painlessly or someone comes towards me and instinctively throw them down. All judo stuff buried in the back of my head. Steven Seagal is more than just an Aikido fighter, and to pigeonhole him as such, I feel would be a grave mistake. If you know much about martial arts, you can see a mixture and variation of multiple styles and disciplines combined into one fluid moving and fairly effective style of his own. You can see styles such as Wing Chun, Hapkido throws and stop kicks techniques, judo, as well as hints of Chin Na, all combined with Aikido, minus the BS extra nonsense steps, to make what you're actually seeing when watching Steven Seagal.
Granted much of it is completely choreographed and set for the big screen. However broken down, with the excess bullshit thrown aside and adapted for the streets, it can be used as quite the effective self defense in most cases in a street style situation.
Granted, this is my opinion, and to be taken as just that. One man's opinion. What training I have and where from doesn't really matter, this is just the opinion of a man who decided many years ago to give up martial arts and focus on bull riding instead. Now you ever want fact based statements about how to ride bulls or the different style of different riders, this old guy might be someone you'd be interested to speak to.lol

The very reason why Bruce created Jeet kune do was to unlimit the limited in styles. Some people just can't grasp that concept, and like Bruce said, styles limit ones true potential of what they could be.

If you can find a legitimate teacher its worth learning, too many fakes out there. You can't cross-stomp someone breaking their leg in the octagon. The book he wrote Tao of Jeet Kune Do covers very little of the style itself.
I've seen at least 5 people use JKD in the UFC and all of them were totally mangled. Bruce was inspirational but he was not a pro fighter and against a pro he would not bring much to the table. Like I said though he inspired a ton of people including myself.

Aikido does use swords, empty hand, and poles or staff. Like any martial art, it is not about the martial art, but the practitioner. MMA was meant for the ring, with rules, Aikido was meant for real life, no rules.

Aikido, like most traditional martial arts, is like an antique watch: interesting, fun for the enthusiast, but not very practical.
Except Aikido isn't a traditional martial art, it's an imitation, hence the "-do" suffix. Traditional Japanese martial arts use the "-jutsu" suffix, and even then they were part of a school and should have the school's name attached to them. For example Katori Shinto-ryu jujutsu varies from Yagyu Shingan-ryu jujutsu. Same with their kenjutsu and sojutsu etc, and other schools' martial arts vary from theirs.

Might sound like mere semantics, but prior to the Meiji Restoration Okinawa was the Ryukyu Kingdom and not part of Japan proper. Though Japan did make Okinawa a vassal state of the Satsuma domain during the Edo period, they were prohibited from practicing Japanese martial arts or culture and had more in common with China. Yes, Aikido training does involve bokken (wooden sword) and jo (short staff). It is a martial arts without any competition training, not meant for sparring either. It mainly deals with holds, locks and spectacular throws and falls.

During the 90s, I felt Steven Seagal had a pretty good standing as far as being among the martial artists who can in "real life" hurt someone. He's no different than any of the other stars at the time. Only problem is that he got old and out of shape and I don't think he looks very intimidating any longer at all. His movies are him sitting down or barely moving and somehow everyone's necks are snapping and arms are breaking. It's kind of like what Van Damme said of him when asked about Steven coming on for the Expendables movie that he should lose some weight, not to poke fun of him, but because he could be able to appear as bad as he was in the 80s and 90s and he can move around and do moves and stunts that he used to.

I remember a story Seagal told of when he went to Japan and had a confrontation with Yakuza, they then asked his wife about it and all that happened was a drunk guy shouted at him and they walked away.

I’ve practiced Aikido for 7 years (not many in Aikido terms). My advice for anyone that wants to learn to fight is to search elsewhere. While certain techniques have practical application, in my opinion that is not the purpose for practicing Aikido. This I say to Aikidoists who argue with people on videos such as this one about how much it can be used to kick ass. They are missing the mark, just as those that say it is trash are. Aikido is focused inward. It is about gaining mastery over the self, learning your center of balance, learning how to control your entire body, being aware of your entire body and how it interacts with another. The benefits can spread to the rest of ones life. The learning curve is Very steep. I practice with new people all the time who have done other martial arts and their self control is limited, people that box or do jiujitsu. They flail about and can only clash with force and muscle. I am physically stronger than my Sensei but he can move me with little physical effort even if I am resisting with all my strength. This is not mumbo-jumbo, giving it up for the old man. It is decades of experience. He is moving where I cannot resist, outside of where my strength can be brought to bear. It is not mystical. It is physics, understanding of the bones, muscles, and balance of the human body. Aikido is both physical and philosophical. Both aspects must be studied. It is a martial art but it is also the art of peace. Is an art that strives to do no harm to the attacker practical? Maybe not. But is there a benefit in the struggle toward such a lofty goal? I have seen it in my own life in abundance.
This makes a lot of sense, you must have a really good Sensei.
V Power Thank you. One of the cool things about Aikido is that, while it is based on very old arts, it is itself very new. My Sensei’s teacher was a direct student of O Sensei, the founder of Aikido. So he can tell stories of those people and that time and his techniques are very fundamental and very close to what O Sensei was teaching.
Grahamhg Don’t know if I agree with the terms kata/forms but it is true that there is no competition. Basically you practice the techniques with a partner, usually four times each, back and forth. Different dojo practice in different ways as far as how much resistance the attacker is using. Some places are very soft and some are very martial, leaning more to old aiki-jujitsu. Where I practice is in the middle and it depends on who is practicing with who. But the only kata I’ve done is a jo kata and that is not technically considered Aikido.
Aikido is about (humbly) evading and neutralizing threats - true pacifism - developed during a rough, violent time in Japan where the primary weapon of choice was still the katana. If anything, it was pretty revolutionary (for them at the time) and under appreciated.
We westerners look at the Japanese fondly now as silly ppl who love video games and Hello Kitty but forget that before WWII they were a deadly world power that had a brutal, cruel and rigid feudal social structure.

Aikido isn't meant to hurt people. It's meant to find peace, and to disarm while protecting your attacker. The Walking Dead had an episode called 'Here's Not Here' and it was about how Morgan learned Aikido and was able to heal from losing his son. Steven Seagal has always abused and misused Aikido. You're not supposed to hurt your opponent, in Aikido you're actually protecting them from hurting themselves in their attack. Aikido is a beautiful and spiritual thing to learn. not for fighting and hurting others.

I taught full contact Tae Kwon Do and Hapkido for many years. Aikido is similar to Hapkido. The purpose behind these martial arts is balance. They are used in addition to full contact forms of fighting. Knowing and using only one is something like putting a snake in a box with one side missing. It's a skill that does not stand alone, but is still a legitimate skill. I'm a grandmother in her 60's now with a pretty significant physical disability. And I'm a pretty small person. However, the decades of martial arts training and teaching that I have still define my ability to survive most attacks. If you're looking to define a martial art by full contact fighting in the ring, you would be misunderstanding the nature of martial arts. Each technique that you learn in martial arts is another tool in your toolbox that you may need to use sometime in the future. There is a lot of ego centric reasoning and thinking that goes into the way men, especially those who are not trained martial artists, view these skills. Martial arts is not about ego and ring fighting. It's about fighting technique and survival. Hapkido and Aikido are formidable tools when used by someone who is adept at these martial arts. Don't be fooled by Steven Seagal flowing around a room giving "clean" demonstrations on prepared students. That is not what real Hapkido or Aikido actually looks like in a real attack because it can easily be followed up with very simple kill strikes, something that you will never experience or witness in a fighting ring.

Most of people today compare all to UFC MMA and forget that there is a bell and rules. They also forget that karate got deadly techs like hitting someones nose bone in, they forget that BJJ comes from Judo comes from Japanse JiuJitsu without the deadly techniques, they forgot that Taekwondo is also a competition form of tangsoodo which was used by korean military and mostly all formes come from chineses kung fu forms like shaolin kung fu that never really was showed by inner monks who kept the most important secrets a secret so are the few rare footages of shaolin like fighters already impressive and the real traditional fighters will never enter a ring or octagon for money as it is ruining the spirit of the conntection between fighting and soul. People these days dont care about it and compare all martial arts with the style a roided up MMA fighter does. Its truly sad.

Katana v katana was extremly rare. It only happened in duels and in most senaios both guys get fatially wounded. There is a saying in japan that all samurais abide by. The katana only comes out if you want to die. Or as a last resort.
Most battles were fought with ari ashigaru ( butchered that spelling probably) which translated means peasant spearman. The spears were a cross spear with a long spike at the end and a cross tip as well.
Samurai were more horse archers than anything else. You would never find samurais fighting with katana in battles unless they are going to die anyways due to their horse dieing.
The time katanas were used generally is in duels like a gun duel in western movies.
So the application of akido is a completly made up one. Disarming a sword when you dont have a sword wouldnt happen. Your more likley to be killed by a panio than being attacked by a katana when ur unarmed.
And in duels you wont be able to disarm the opponent if ur disarmed because u would have died already.

Katana are sharp along one edge only (and tip)... you absolutely can disarm an attacker armed with a Katana.
Especially, if you are well trained and conditioned to do so, as the Samurai were.
That said... I prefer Wakizashi as close combat is more likely if you are ambushed... not that I ever carry mine in public or even around at home... most people just use guns for self defense these days anyway.
@@dougefresh8029 he doesn't though, there are entire branches (read: many separate martial arts) under the umbrella of "iaido" whose entire point is to respond rapidly to surprise attacks (which were common, and never considered dishonorable--if anything it was dishonorable to be caught off guard, not to be the one doing the catching). These techniques almost all focus on rapidly drawing the katana while responding to what the assailant is doing.
The one he's right about is that you'd only draw your sword if you're prepared to die in the outcome, but this is not as special as it sounds because Bushido is quite literally "the Way of Death" as much as it is "Way of the Warrior". To quote Hagakure, "a man should resign himself to death every day before breakfast, in doing this he may live as though he is already dead and when the time comes he will not hesitate to die." He's quite wrong that most duels were to the death, they were usually to first blood as in Europe with sabre duels. Rapier duels on the other hand were nasty business. Not many old rapier duelists.

Aikido came to the world, as Aikido, after the 2nd world war. The founder wanted an art to rebuild his country.
In Aikido there are a lot of punch! A lot! It's very legit mate, and can be brutal, even lethal. So no, aikido wasn't created to disarm Japanese swordsmen. Yes, it was created based on traditional martial arts, mostly Daitoryu Aikijujutsu. Sokako Takeda was his main sensei. It's very easy to hurt, and there are nasty techniques that are very simple to apply. No pressure points needed. Cheers

There is such thing as transferring energy because Ronda did it on Miesha when Miesha would try to take her down. The thing is the person has to be 100% committed to taking you down. In many of those videos those people are just letting the teacher throw them which actually defends the throw. It ends up looking like bad acting because them being loose defends the throw but they fall down because they don't want to embarrass the teacher.

The Gracies, to best of my knowledge took some judo techniques and "perfected" them creating a practice a lot more focused on fighting on the ground and submission techniques.
A good example of this are the differences in scoring in both judo and Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

It's not a fight for competition, but more a presentation of work. I've done Aikido as well as Jiu Jitsu for several years and the combination of them is pretty good (I also did some other MMA including sword fight). It's somehow hilarious how so many people on the internet shit on sports or martial arts, mostly never have done any of them themselves. Those videos are TRAINING... if you train, you obviously do not hurt your partner. But Aikido has as well it's takes on throat, groin, kidney attacks and so on... mostly internet guys are shitting on martial arts because a) they only live for their fantasy of manhood and their weird love for UFC, which is based on aggression in themselves and has nothing to do with the sport and/or b) are trying to - if they really are doing MMA - downgrade other styles. I don't get why. Almost every martial art has it's flaws and it's pros. What's the big deal?
And in this video Rogan gets it wrong. He says: "Nobody comes at you like this..." or something like that. But that is not the case, because this is to sharpen your reaction first, before actually getting into a real fight or competition on sports level. This vid is simply about the quickness and evading - nothing less BUT also nothing more.

I remember in 1994 when I guy I was stationed with, tried to get me to go to his Judo class. I wasn't interested in that style of Martial Arts, but I do remember him saying that Steven Seagal was legit back then....that was about 4-5 years before the internet blew up.
The guy kept shitting on Van Damme, but the difference is we actually saw Van Damme sending people flying just by practicing (on a French tv show), plus he was actually scared of him.

In that Aikido video, Seagal is standing with his hands down, his feet flat, and his chin sticking up like a red "Easy Button" from Staples.
If a trained boxer had been there, he would have been waking up in the corner of the dojo, wondering what the hell just happened.
From my understanding the critical acclaim about being "the first American to teach in Japan" was highly predicated on the fact that other Japanese dojos wouldn't teach Americans that didn't speak Japanese. Also; it was his Japanese FATHER IN LAW that ran a dojo who allowed Steven to teach Americans. Most notably; American military personnel. This is what added to the perceived legitimacy of his claims and (imo) probably the beginning of his fascination with the armed service , inspiring his stories as being part of it. While that was probably a huge boon to his legend , in reality ; it’s kind of a overstated minor anecdote.
He may have been the first American to teach but that’s because of his connection and the fact that nobody else would do it. Bro. It wasn't like a council of Japanese Aikido masters sat down in a pagoda hidden deep in the woods surrounded by candles and incense to have a chit-chat about it. This isn't the Karate Kid. 😂😂😂

Joe is basically right from what I have seen. I would venture to say that there are some specific things taught in aikido and related martial arts that are pretty useful, but it's a bit of a strange martial art. I also agree with Joe's analysis of, and I paraphrase, 'the techniques are more useful if you have tremendous physical attributes.' That would be my take away on that one. It can be a good addition to already existing training in grappling, wrestling, judo and martial arts as a whole though.

The man in the video is Kyuzo Mifune recognized as the greatest judo technition that ever lived. After recieving his shodan (1rst black), he was never thrown again. The black belts in this video (none of which, were under 4th dan) were trying their very best to throw him. None succeeded. The entire video
is definitely worth watching.

@@makkan49 judo has double leg takedowns and defenses against it. A high level judoka will rarely get caught with that move.
The Steven Segal story is fascinating. He’s a wonderful con artist. The story is really amazing! Yeah, he taught in Japan. He married a rich Japanese lady and it was her school. And, he ran it into the ground and used that marriage to meet someone in Hollywood then married that girl because she could do different things for his career.
And he just kept going. It’s REALLY interesting.
