In today’s episode of Women of Impact, Mel Robbins and I will frikin’ CHANGE YOUR LIFE and help you get to your goals in JUST 50 minutes!
So if you feel like you’re constantly losing it, always overwhelmed, easily distracted, or the worst, ASHAMED at how stupid you seem to others, fear not because our girl Mel is here to help!!
Mel Robbins is a best selling author, podcast host, and one of the most sought-after speakers in the world - but while she has had SOOO much success in her life, she can’t seem to text anyone back, remember someone’s birthday, or put away the milk when she makes coffee.
The thing is guys, even Mel frikin’ Robbins isn’t immune to the anxiety and self-criticism that comes from undiagnosed ADHD. But now, in her 50s, she is FINALLY ditching the self-criticism and owning her diagnosis!
Women have historically been disproportionately undiagnosed for SOO many reasons, (and yep…. I am part of that stat too!) which is why I wanted Mel to come on the show to talk about the sneaky symptoms of ADHD that you might be suffering with right now, the power that can come from a proper diagnosis, and what you can do to OWN it and make it your superpower!
Because once you understand that YOU’RE NOT CRAZY and your brain just works differently, THAT’S when you can actually take control and do something about it!!
    Chapter Markers:
🧠 [00:00] Undiagnosed ADHD in women
🚩 [7:26] Signs of attention issues
❌ [19:57] Stop beating yourself up
👩‍❤️‍👨 [24:12] ADHD & and its effect on relationships
🦸‍♀️ [41:35] Make it your superpower
    🔥 MEL’S FIRE QUOTES:
"There were a profound number of young women, myself included, who started developing anxiety in their teens and were treated for anxiety…and so there's this lost generation of us for decades, Lisa, who were diagnosed with anxiety or depression in high school and college years, treated for anxiety, when really the core issue underneath it all, was undiagnosed, either some type of learning disability or difference, or it was attention issues."
"It's not about focus. It's about your brain's ability to direct that focus in appropriate ways."
“And so when your estrogen is out of whack, your estrogen is also in your brain, and it is a really important hormone when it comes to attention and memory."
"I could never properly communicate that I didn't mean to not do it. I just forgot on my way to the garbage can because something else entered my brain to finish the task."
"Executive functioning is when you have basically an administrative assistant in your brain, and it's the administrative assistant that is dictating and telling you what to do in what order."
"If you have an inability to focus and hold your focus, particularly when the task that you need to do homework, finishing a report, finishing a book that you're not interested in, solving some problem, listening to a conversation that isn't particularly interesting, the person that is in the head, the executive assistant is like, meh."
"There was an enormous impact on women around the world, given this lost generation of women who developed and were diagnosed and treated with anxiety forever and never understood until later in life, or, heck, may not even know still right now that the core issue that they beat themselves up with is a focus or a learning style difference."

I was diagnosed with ADHD at age 38. I learn about a symptom almost every week that I’d previously assumed was just a “character flaw”. I’ve been much more vocal with friends, family and coworkers about my diagnosis and how it impacts how my brain functions and how I interact with people, but I often feeling like I’m failing in my role as friend, family member or employee. And yes, it has definitely gotten worse as I get closer to menopause. While it does help knowing what’s going on, but like Mel, I still struggle with guilt and shame, and still even beat myself up for not implementing the hacks and lifestyle changes I know will help (oh the irony of struggling to effectively manage ADHD because of unmanaged ADHD lol). This is hard sh*t, not going to lie.

This is sooo me. For the longest time I thought I was also an Aspie. Perhaps I am and I'm also ADD. I have no interest in taking any drugs. I love and accept myself just the way I am. Meditation is MY medication and I use numerous holistic and natural supps that help tremendously. It's a choice. Thank you Mel for saying that this is NOT a disorder and thank you Lisa for having Mel talk about this! You gals rock!❤️

I have adhd and I'm 70. I found out 5 years ago. Go figure! All through my life the only thing that has helped me is making lists. Even the smallest task goes on the list as it comes up. I carry a note pad and add to the list daily or moment to moment.

Medication can be tricky...there's side effects and tolerance issues...crashes and sleep problems. It might be okay for some not under a lot of stress and have okay brain health before starting on medication.

I believe that nearly everyone could be diagnosed, to whatever degree, with anything - ADHD, Autism etc. I feel we are in an era of wanting to blame something for our inadequacies, rather than working hard to improve ourselves and be stoic. I don't see much use of reaching for a diagnosis. I just think we need to get on with it and get over it. #ReformUK

    That’s me!
But I am about 20 years older than you. I’ve been through so many meds for depression, social anxiety, bipolar polar… everything. Nothing helped. All this just added to my trauma. I haven’t been officially diagnosed, but I had a therapist tell me I had ADHD because she could see I came with my organizer and I was trying so hard, but still wasn’t organized.

OMG! Thanks for this. I have been deeply concerned that somethings wrong with my brain and was hoping it wasn’t early onset of Alzheimer’s. Everything you said about ADHD describes me to a tee. My ADHD has surfaced in the last couple of years. I’m guessing because of perimenopause.

It is a defective gene. Dyslexic is in my family. My mother had it and my brother had it. My oldest sister’s daughter has it, my second sister’s two children has it.
A number of my cousins have it.
I was scared one of my children would have it. I started teaching my daughter at four years to sound out words. She did not have it, but I had seen the devastating effect it had on their self-esteem and chance to have success in life.
A neighbour’s daughter had a speech impediment. She told me her brothers children had it and that it went back through the generations. she said it is a defective gene in the family.
My sister became one of the special education teachers and told my mother what was wrong with her, that she had dyslexia. My mother learned to read in early fifties. She was a intelligent woman and now had the confidence to work hard to over come it.
My mother was 16 in grade three when she quite school. Her sister told people she was regarded (old terminology, but that was the term back then).
There is some help today but not enough for children with this disability because they want to give them drugs rather than teach them differently.

When I go to work I have to do a check to make sure I remembered to put on pants.... All this time I felt like I was an idiot

My son was diagnosed with borderline ADHD and we chose not to go the medication route and I'm so glad I did instead we went to an all-natural foods diet through the fein gold diet.
Most of his symptoms were gone within 8 weeks and completely gone in 12 weeks.
Don't feed your kids artificial junk.
