414 days, 15.000 km, 15 countries. On his 24th birthday, geophysicist Anselm Nathanael Pahnke heads out on a journey through Africa with two friends. On their fully laden bicycles, they explore South Africa for three months until the trio surprisingly splits in the scorching Kalahari Desert. While his friends fly home, Anselm brings himself to continue the journey north alone.

Anselm filmed the trip by himself. His little compact camera became his companion, he kept setting it up to drive past it. To create special shots, he had to get creative and inventive. In addition to his tripod, trees, trucks and donkey carts were his helpers. Occasionally he also held the camera in hand to people on the street who enjoyed it as well. He charged the batteries with a USB charger which was fed by the hub dynamo. The documentary "Elsewhere. Alone in Africa" was made from the recordings and has been shown in over 300 German cinemas since December 13, 2018. Originally, to make a movie was never his plan.
Wow so amazing this guy got guts of steel. I can't understand how brave this guy is, or was he simply half-full. I learned a lot from this film. Africa has it's own pyramid. That is something new I learn. That is a shocking new knowledge to me. I want to do something like this so much but I am not brave enough. I have not found my bravery. I hope I find strength in me one day to do something like this. I want to take a bike and ride it across the globe.

This young man deserves an award for this documentary!!! I grew up in Zimbabwe and now live in Canada... I am scared to return... but his really brought another perspective on Africa... just like I remember it... the people have next to nothing but they still enjoy life more than people in north America!

I completely understood this feeling. I solo travel once a year for 2 to 3 weeks for 10 years, it's how I spend my vacation. Life is too short to wait for someone to joint my journey. This documentary was published here on October 1 2021. I just crossed the Sea of Aqaba on a night ferry full of economic immigrants from Neweiba Egypt to Aqaba Jordan, part of my 35 days journey in Egypt.
Yes, I also picked up on that...from loneliness to aloneness. Such an important step on so many levels.

Hi Anselm. I've lived in South Africa for over 40 years, and your trip affected me like no other. You were able to convey your feelings so movingly. Most people show the usual pictóric scenes, but for me the best moments were when you were faced with lonesomeness, fatigue, fear... That struggle was tear provoking!

'Best moment for me was in the end of the documentary when the nice woman said, "you are welcome here", "you can feel free". The greatest hospitality you often find with poor people. Their wealth lies in their compassion and big heart. What a nice woman. I bow for her.

As a bikepacker myself (though only having ridden in Europe) I truly admire Anzelm's cycling effort and filming skill. This documentary you just can't have enough of.
Also, l can't help a comparison with Polnand's Kazimierz Nowak, who cycled Africa north to south and back again between 1931 - 36.

I met this guy on school trip in western Uganda at HOT SPRINGS Fort Portal , Queen Elizabeth national park area. We were the first group to recognize his flag in Africa. He told us about his new wedded wife and his Ethiopian visa. Wow i cant believe he actually made it all the way.
This documentary have confirmed that people are inherently good. Those smiles were magical. Truly amazing memories.
It is when you travel alone that you find out what you're made of and that you learn to be comfortable with your own thoughts and to feel real accomplishment. You feel and every inch of your journey with your soul. By leaving him, his friends did him a favour...

This buy far has to be one of the most incredible solo doco 's I've ever seen! Not only has it made me fall in love with Africa! But what a conquest! One guy! Pretty much on his own & on a bicycle!!!!! 🤯🤯🤯🤯 the widelife is so epic! I almost cannot believe he did this solo & made it thru! And the people of Africa so beautiful! Man! This was exceptionally done. Even the sacrifice of obtaining all this footage while braising all the elements of solo travel in this environment! This guy deserves great rewards! This video has been in my feed for a week or two, but I was put off by the length. I finally clicked on it expecting to watch just a little bit ... 1 hour 40 later, I have a huge smile on my face and a whole bunch of admiration. As Africa journeys goes, this is up there with Livingstone and Stanley ... Respect and admiration!

That is so true, I watched none stop, took the phone with me to the bathroom and kitchen, Africa is an amazing continent, the people are so relaxed and free spirited, I smiled throughout the whole video and felt as I was traveling with him, the end is like waking up from a beautiful dream.
It ends with a 🐂 💩 lie straight to the viewer's face.
If you truly got dragged away how did he take a picture of his bicycle on the ground?
If he had no SIM card how was he able to view part of the administration aspect inside the police station?
It would be very easy for me to keep going with five other questions that would tear the story apart such as why did his "friends" leave him specifically on the border?

I got hooked couldn't stop watching till the end. This is _unglaublich,_ an epic adventure. In an arab country, especially Egypt, you never ever film the police, or members of the military forces or the customs, never film a govt building unless you were given explicit permission to do so. It is sad that you learned it the -hard- egyptian way, I hope you forgot the incident and enjoyed the rest of your epic journey.

one of the coolest documentaries i have ever seen... what a brave and motivated young man he is.. that is quite a journey he set out on .. each day bringing unseen new challenges and the always changing and sometimes quite dangerous situations he faced... and the time he spent alone pushing forward into the many vast and unknown places that were constantly presenting him with a kaleidoscope of changing (sometimes very dangerous) road conditions and climate changes.. just the everyday challenges he faced with each new and different environments would have sent most people over the edge and they would have quit and went home crying.. this mans epic journey is nothing short of remarkable in that he had only himself to look to many of times and find the inner strength and mindset needed to continue on and complete his goal .. it was a journey of many different challenges... it was mind blowing at times to witness the generosity of the people he came into contact with .. and the kindness they showed him is something that seems kind of rare anymore... he was a stranger to them and they always gave him some help if needed.. and maybe it was only a wave and or smile .. but those things are the ones that could keep one going at times.. all the different people he met along the way and the times they spent together although short are things and memories a person will carry with them and remember forever.. the kids were so cool... and how interested they were of him.. always smiling and laughing.. also i thought what a great job was done with and how this was filmed -edited and presented... just all around great film-work.

Having lived in Kenya ❤ and travelled most of southern Africa , I can only say dont wait, its as incredible as Anselm shoved. I however took a litle more luxurios way of travel, using my motorbike. Anselm is totally hardcore. 💪

I went on a solo trip to Rwanda and Uganda to see the mountain gorillas in 2018 and on a trip to kibuya on Lake kivu I met a south African man who was riding from South Africa to Morocco
I thought at the time how incredible his journey was.

Perfect documentary for those of us who would love to experience Africa without taking all of the risks. Anselm provides revealing glimpses of diversity throughout his journey, encountering loving kindness everywhere except when dealing with governmental authority. This film should be shown in schools.

the thought of exploring Africa like this is so cool, but the dangers constantly put out by the media scare me out of it. One day, I want to do something similar, not on this large of a scale but at least to see the true Africa and what its countries has to offer
@@DMystic1 I know its hard to believe but most of the called "dangerous" places labeled by the media can be experienced safely. They only report the worst of the worst, if people went by the worst of the worst that happens in america no one would come. Obviously there are risks when traveling africa, but its not as dangerous as the media or people portray. People are too busy living their everyday lives to want to do you harm.

I am a cyclist, yes at 75 I still enjoy to cycle 30kms two or three times a week, I understand what it takes to maintain your bicycle gearing, with all the desert and general African dust you must have been very diligent in checking and overhauling your gears, truly amazed at how you managed to pick yourself up and keep going with your sicknesses.
The best ever...I am Angolan and traveled a bit in Africa but this was just amazing. It really shows the real Africa from the people / human perspective. You are a hero....

Later on we moved up from Dar es Salaam to Enttebbe, it was cooler, being situated on the shores of Lake Victoria, it used to rain every afternoon, thank you for bringing back these memories for me, the boys home made toys are just as I remember, some things have not changed at all.

As an experienced biker i can say that was a hard ride. Without the weight of all that baggage a "roadbike" can go 40+ kph. Your probably averaging 10-15 kph. So a ten hour day covers only 100- 150 kilometers, excluding pitstops like getting sick with malaria & typhoid . And you had to travel more than 6,500 kilometers.
The Bike was only the vehicle going 10 or 130 km a day :) It seemed I cycled a lot. But some days I stayed with what I found.
@@AnselmPahnke you're absolutely right.. a lot of variables will dictate the distance you would cover on any given day especially in that uncontrolled setup - the unpredictablity adds more spice to that adventure.

Way too much to say about it. The video is so full of recognizable moments, Anselm is a great guy. His love for Africa and the people shows all the time. Could go on forever. Just LOVE it!
For me it is one happy trip back to Africa, all my memories vivid again, like I am travelling with Anselm and he exactly knows where I want to go and what I want to see and absorb ... THANK YOU!!

Africa is a truly polemic continent which burrows deep into the soul. Anybody who has spent a large period of time there cannot leave it behind, it lives on inside you, a constant wonderment.
What an amazing adventure most of us can only live vicariously through your eyes and astounding video!
