Congo: A journey to the heart of Africa - BBC Africa

  • The Democratic Republic of the Congo is a vast, mineral rich country the size of Western Europe.
    Alastair Leithead takes an epic journey from the Atlantic Ocean to the far reaches of the Congo river to explore how history has shaped the Congo of today and uncover the lesser told stories of this beautiful, if troubled country.
    In the largest rainforest outside of the Amazon he comes face to face with its gorillas and hunts with pygmies, he travels into the heart of the Ebola outbreak with United Nations peacekeepers, and explores the cobalt mines which will drive our electric cars of the future.

    I know all the 54 independent African states have a story to tell including my home Kenya but Congo has the saddest story of all since Leopold's time. When you close your eyes to pray tonight please remember to pray for Mother Africa and her ever ailing heart, the Congo.

    But the corruption is a real problem here... As soon as I landed in Lubumbashi International airport I went for immigration counter.. there was an officer checking my passport and Visa. He was asking for an printout of an Document which I had as a soft copy. But I was not having it. The officer asked me to come closer and asked me like "Give me Money". I started asking why should I give money(with a little louder tone) he started to change the topic. So corrupted.

      A major problem, not only in Congo, but throughout Africa, is the politicians who are corrupted to the core. Most of the development aid the West sends to Africa goes into the pockets of these politicians. As a result, the infrastructure will not develop, there will be no foreign investments etc. It's sad that the ordinary people are suffering from this problem. I'm from the diaspora. These videos are encouraging for one simple reason. No matter what we've been through as a people, whether self inflicted or as a result of external pressure, it's clear that we are strong and capable of surviving and persevering under seemingly insurmountable odds. They key is to transition from survival to thriving without repeating historical errors and mirroring the atrocities of our oppressors. The latter is important because I'm convinced that some of us if given the power would do the same or worse to others per HUMAN nature. AFRICA UNITE

      Masha Zheleznov so who deems what “important to know” and so forth? You’re acting as if the education system provides individuals with the tools to properly analyze and deconstruct the various narratives.

    • @prestonmatthews725
      @prestonmatthews725 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Masha Zheleznov so what about the other aspects of the world? Most of my fellow classmates in Canada aren’t cognizant or knowledgeable of this. Most of them do not even know about the Starlight tours that happen in Canada against the Indigenous People so for you to say that is skewed to say the least. Unless you go out and search for these information you will not if ever see it in the news. Maybe, it is a way to deflect and negate the plights of others or it might be a coping mechanism for those in power 🤷🏽

    • @prestonmatthews725
      @prestonmatthews725 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Masha Zheleznov why isn’t the same due diligence taken and or given when educating people about the exploits of Christopher Columbus? Why is it that people are selective-as to should be taught? Thats the basic premise of my assertion. Why?

    • @prestonmatthews725
      @prestonmatthews725 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Masha Zheleznov I like how optimistic and positive you’re and that in itself is an aspect of privilege which is not offered to a lot of people. As such you can look at the glass as half full whilst many see the latter.

      AGREE! History is written by the victors, so you can only imagine all that has been left out. Reading through these comments, some are clearly disturbing. The sheer hate will never go away, but for those that have eyes that see, just read between the lines, when history is told by victor. The raping, the pillaging, the free labor & some expect the circumstances of these tribes, people's & lands to be different. All I can do is hope & pray, the ONES that inflicted so much hate & strife on another, suffer the same fate in their after life for eternity!
