I am getting a 3.09 installed and going to the track to see the difference between the 3.70 gears and the 3.09 gears. Stay tuned for an update video next weekend (2-3 October).
I knew forced air was coming so 3.09 seemed like the perfect gearing for what I want. So many back seat drivers told me I messed up but I've seen guys like you have to go through this process before. 3.55+ is too much gearing if you're going to add tons of power. Stock it's fine
The 3.09s are great boost gears. I went with 3.09s because I planned on throwing a lot more power at the car. Even N/A it shreds up tires in its current configuration so I couldn’t even imagine boost
Well, we are going to find out! Hopefully in about 2 weeks I should have it installed and then hit the track the next week unless something opens up that Sunday.
I like your videos. I have a 2015 R/T with Flowmaster Outlaw exhaust. It's a fun car. Definitely wish I had more time to do some modifications. Subbed.
@@ModernRedHemi You're right, I looked last night. Thanks for the education lol. I was looking to figure out what it was. Saves me some money at least!
Didnt know you were on 3.70s. I woulda mentioned that right off the bat. On the 2016 camaro i swapped to the ss diff. Everyone advised againt the higher numerical ratios above the 3.23 mark. Good for the manuals, but the A8 in the camaros as well has such quick gearing, using a numerically high ratio (3.20 and higher) it kills the advantage of having the gearing of an 8 speed. Most of the manuals are still doing 6 gears, where its useful. Gonna be hot all week, but next week will be back with 65 degree highs in our area. Look forward to seein your vids then. I know this morn in elkridge it was 44 when we started on the cars today.
Thanks for the info. I got a lot of the same advice from a number of folks. This was a trial and error check just to see if the 3.70 gears would help. Think it's pretty obvious that, in my case and set up, they don't. Getting a 3.09 and hopefully we can see the difference.
I have the 6spd thats staying behind my 426 procharged to 22psi. Id like to drop the ratio from the 3.90 to a 3.09 but im afraid that takeoffs will be challenging. Would a 3.09 be okay or would the 3.70 be better? Im not racing it, i just want a more efficient gear for the highway without losing my ability to roll the car in 1st gear. Ill have enough torque
This is my opinion as I have no experience with the 6 speed but I think the 3.09 will be too tall. If you are not happy with the 3.90's I would try the 3.70's but those are unicorns and extremely difficult to find. 😉
@@ModernRedHemi Thats what the builder suggested too. Seems i can find it if I got a ZR style billet diff. But thatd be an overbuild for my purpose. I guess ill let it fall on if i can get one at all. Those 3.09s are tempting when your car expects to hit 7mpg
Question for ya, I just installed the 6.4 manifold on my 5.7. How do I set the mds to 4700 and close at 4800? I tried and the open doesnt let me go further than 1.5
Sounds wierd. What model do you have? If you have the 8969 here is the manual: www.jegs.com/InstallationInstructions/100/121/121-8969.pdf Make sure you have it on the 8 cylinder mode.
Thanks for the review..👍 yeah sometimes the engineers are just spot on.. thinking about ratios and what’s best all around.. 🤙 MOPAR!! Think 🤔 they thought people would burn out.. 🔥and run at least light to light 💡 DRAGGING...💨
For a minute I was surprised you were going all the way back up to a 3.09 but I forgot you're getting that ProCharger put on it. So the extra 2 inches won't mean nothing but more speed per revolution.
@@ModernRedHemi well if you were running a 3.08 open when we met last summer you're going to be doing darn good. I say that because if I remember correctly you were running on your factory wheels and tires and you took off like a fighter jet
I think, nothing to back this up, but I think they would do you justice as the gearing is totally different between the 5 speed and the 8 speed. I think you'll have a ripper for sure!
It will be interesting to see what will happen going from the 3.70 to the 3.09 I hope it is what you are looking for, one of the last drag strip runs you made in the burnout the guy told you one tire was not spinning and you backed up and did it again, remember? That should not have happened! There could be something else wrong?
3.92 gears with the Nag1 5 speed is a phenomenal setup. Add a stall converter to that and you can shave off about 3/10 of a second in the quarter mile. You will be cruising at 3000 rpm @ 80 mph so might want to keep that in mind. 3.70 gears with the Nag1 are also a great setup and will reduce the cruising rpm to 2800 @ 80 mph
@@Khe247 Perfect, now you just have to pick which gear ratio you want. Personally I don't mind cruising at 75 mph and would go with the 3.92 lsd. These gears work well with the Nag1 unless you ever plan on a turbo setup. Supercharged is fine.
The 3.70 would be better if you had tires that were the factory height. With 3.70 gears, the effective gear ratio is 4.08 with a 26" tire. The problem is that with the 8 speed transmission, you have almost no 1st gear. To show you how short you 1st gear is, you're not even at 30 mph and short of the 60 foot before the transmission shifts. Your ETs would most likely be lower with the 3.09 gears. With a 26" tire, the effective gear ratio is 3.40. I do have one question for you. Is it cheaper to buy taller tires or buy another limited slip differential and pay for the labor to have it installed? There isn't that much difference between 3.70 and 3.40 ratios. People often make blanket statements about the ideal gear for a given car. First, you need to figure out what the trap speed should be at the end of the quarter mile and figure out what gear you want to finish. Ideally what you want to to hit the stripe when your car is making the most power which would be close to redline.
Definitely cheaper buying tires. Thing is I had 28" tires the entire season before last Saturday. I think the 3.09 is maximized for the 8 speed. We will find out in 2 weeks. Can't run this weekend so the next weekend we will find out.
@@ModernRedHemi - I assumed that you were running a 26" tire all year. Running a 28" drag radial or slick, you probably would have hit 11s in negative DA even with teh 3.70 gears, The 8 speed has a pretty steep 1st gear. The combination of a 3.70 gear and 26" tires doesn't work. I went through figuring out gears and I made up a spread sheet to figure out what I needed. It was worth doing because I was able to knock off a tenth and a half in the quarter mile mile. With a Mopar, gear selection is limited. With boost, a 3.09 gear is probably best. You can always change tire height to get the ideal effective gear ratio. I think you'll find the combination of a 26" tire and a 3.09 gear should work well for you. If you provide the RPM you car shifts at and what you expect for a trap speed, I can tell you at what speed the car is going when the transmission shifts at each gear regardless of tire size. If you can provide the trap speed I can tell you what gear you'll be in and RPM at the end of the quarter mile. It isn't hard to do.
I'm considering upgrading my open diff to an LSD but not sure which ratio would match better, not plans for boost tho. tell me what do you think about 3.09 VS. 3.70
@@riology2234 - It depends on your set up and the year of your car. I'm assuming you're talking about an R/T since Scat Packs come from the factory with 3.09s. I'll also assume the car is an automatic. If your car is 2014 or older it has the Nag1 5 speed. It has a somewhat lazy first gear. I would go with the 3.70 gears. If the R/T was a manual, it would have a 3.70 limited slip diff from the factory. In a stock R/T, the 3.70 would provide much better throttle response. Fuel economy would drop about 20% on the highway with the 3.70 gears and gas mileage in the city won't change very much.
I am getting a 3.09 installed and going to the track to see the difference between the 3.70 gears and the 3.09 gears. Stay tuned for an update video next weekend (2-3 October).
