factory heads were matched with the factory cam to provide low end torque(where the motor will spend most of its life). They put in the factory cam, so combined with factory heads, would produce the same amount of power/torque in the same curve as the factory ECU would, and all they did was change the intake, which did not improve anything.

Man did anyone else notice the clatter it made? Sounded like no oil pressure! I still respect the HEMI to me it started the newer era horsepower wars and having owned a 06 and 11 HEMI 5.7 engines they're great engines. I think the 06 felt a bit more street friendly. I might sound crazy but the 06 had a more aggressive start whereas the 11 sounded lazy didn't the lower rpm' torque and bad fuel economy. For being down 45hp the 06 had way more street grunt. The 11's power came in strong at about 4k rpm up to about 6k rpm. The 06's throttle response and trans downshifts worked way better as well. But the newer 8sp auto's really liven up the later models so if you're thinking of getting one get the later 8sp's with the 3.92 rear in the trucks you won't go wrong.

Bigger injectors are recommended, usually 39lb for starters. Fuel pump upgrade is a must and tuning on your stock computer. This setup from magnuson is designed to give you 135-150 rwhp over stock. There is a great website called departmentofboost.com that has a lot of basic info on supercharger power numbers and expected cost at each desired level. Hope this helps.

Problem is most efi intakes don't give you a straight shot into the port unlike carb intakes like the victor jr. It'd do about the same for max horsepower (because that's basically about how much air/fuel you can pump) but it would lose out in power under the curve. Fuel injection can adjust A/F ratio at any point in the range, for any temperature. Carbs are limited in that regard.

Going back through history they've never been good at cylinder heads, in the 60s and 70s the Boss and Cleveland engines were the only ones that could ever breathe right. Even the big block engines were horribly choked. At 400 CFM I'd guess you're running a big cam and/or boost to take advantage of that much flow? For a budget engine swap I think the 5.7 Hemi is a bit of a hidden gem, my biggest issue is the parts interchangeability still isn't as good as a GM engine as much as I'm tired of seeing those swapped into everything.

they don't tell you the total cost for this build.
These are rough estimated numbers for a "budget" build.
    $2000 for engine.
    $247 Engine gasket set
    $855 Mahle Piston w/rings set
    $61 Rod bearings
    $61 Main bearings
$529 Indy mod man intake manifold
    $503 Doug's ceramic coated headers
$919 Fast ez efi self tuning system
$550 MSD Hemi 6 ignition controller
    $638 Meziere electric water pump
    $268 Meziere backing plate
    $75 Cloyes timing chain
$30 trick flow specialties cam handle
    $393 Camshaft
$1400 Patriot Performance stage 2 cnc heads (based on their $1800 heads and cam claim). I highly doubt Patriot sold a pair of heads that damn cheap, but whatever.
    $40 pair of head bolts
    $45 royal purple engine oil
Grand total of $8614 for this Hemi "budget" build. I don't know about you guys but that busted my budget. This does not include and the nickel and dime bullhsit to make this happen. And again, i highly doubt those cylinder heads and cam combo was $1800.
Why not just find yourself a 6.4 392 hemi to start with. They're rated at 485hp bone stock with factory exhaust manifolds. I see them from $5500 and up. For $8600 I'm sure you can find a take out with factory harness and ecu. You'd have a better base to start with when you begin modifying.

Great informative video, but I think the horsepower gain wasn't very impressive for the cost ..additionally the cost tally was missing new bolts, gaskets, oil, water pump setup, efi system, intake and plates ..which I'm sure adds at least another $2k easy. So 60hp for $4k either shows the engine is already squeezed from factory for efficiency (kudos Chrysler engineers) or your selections weren't up to the task. Just saying.....

This show is more a bunch of advertisements for various sponsors. Still fun to watch but they shouldn't be doing "budget" builds. Take that stock hemi, stock intake, stock air box, stock ECU and tune it and you've got a great budget engine swap with no "build" necessary. Remember not so long ago when people were jacked to get 400 HP out of a SBC in their hot rod? This engine will do that stock with a tune.

    • @Slamstrike
      @Slamstrike 5 ปีที่แล้ว

@@406Steven that's true but it's even cheaper to start out by just buying one of the 6.1 or 6 .4L that start anywhere from 425 to 480 horse. Just today on the FB market place I saw a 2013 300 SRT low mileage 6. 4 with trans for $6500

  • @jamescole6846

I see all the bad comments and I mostly agree. Heads are not worth the 30HP however this 345CID is already making 400HP stock. Thats over 1HP per CI. Most hot rod motor builders are way happy when they get to 1HP per CI so to me that shows that the 5.7 is pretty much built and tuned to make as much as it can from the factory. Heads can only suck the air being demanded in other words they could have put on heads 5 times as big and it still would do anymore because the displacement is only pulling so much CFM however I would have like to seen a test where they plopped on a roots blower and run that against the stock heads vs the news ones. I bet the numbers would be way different and way bigger with the newer heads

    • @jd440
      @jd440 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

That's not entirely stock. The intake is way different from a truck style intake, or even a car style for that matter, and so is the throttle body. The ECU they are using is much better than a factory one too. So, there's where most of your gains came from.
The cams they chose were small. (lift wise).
Eagle heads, outflow the pre eagle ones and they outflow the 6.1 heads at some points, but between the two heads, they are nearly the same. The bottleneck, as with most engines, is the exhaust ports, and exhaust valve size. You'll be surprised what gains can be made by increasing the exhaust valve size slightly, opening up the valve hole, and giving the port some love too. Torque Improves quite a bit. If the valve can't be upsized, then duration and valve lift can be tweaked a bit to allow the valve to be open longer and higher to help airflow out of the cylinder. With these engines though, piston to valve clearance starts to be an issue for the exhaust valve with the higher lifts, so, care must be taken to have the space needed and still get a good benefit from it.

My 03 1500 5.7 has performance exhausts, K&N, hypertech programmer. We all know the old 5.7 makes 345 stock. K&N air intake gives... eh 15hp maybe 20hp. I like it on the truck it suits it. Hypertech programmer you can set your RPM settings, power, fuel. Trucks been on a 93 gas tune for a long time it’s probably making 390hp 395hp I’m liking where it’s at a lot. The newer 5.7s make that power stock but thing is mine feels like much much more, when you want the power it’s there the truck will instantly downshift and pull its fantastic. Maxed out on the power system I’m guessing it’ll do a 415hp. It’s been a while since I touched it. I like what it’s on now so I kept it and drove the truck

A lot of TH-cam engine builders here in the comments. The intake they are using is definitely for future boost upgrades and sucks for their EFI throttle body setup. I'm sure they know they are leaving a lot of power on the table so they can save some money for a future supercharger. Also, that engine made 345hp stock. They are now over 100hp over stock which is awesome for a pump gas street 5.7L that started with good power from the factory. Not too bad for about $1,800.

also....delete the MDS system and replace all lifers with regular ones and tune the computer to always have the MDS mose on. this pressurizes the system all the time which helps to lube the lifters so you don't get lifter and cam failure like some get. you delete the MDS system by removing the solenoids(4 of them) and replacing them with cap blockers. I discovered that by replacing a, 2009 and new 5.7 Hemi oil pump with a hellcats oil pump, it helps with the hemi tick and at idle, it helps to continue to oil the lifters. at idle, the hellcat oil pump add about another 28 PSI and at cruise, adds another 38 PSI of oil pressure. and the hellcat oil pump is only 180 bucks. worth the price to help make sure the lifters get continued oil to not cause the lifter and cam failure. (hemi tick)

It was an early 2000s RAM motor. It didn't have MDS to begin with as it came blocked off from the factory. It's also unable to have a hellcat oil pump mounted to it because there is a slight difference in the mounting between early 2000s pre-eagle hemis and the Eagle VVTs. Only 2009+ can use hellcat oil pumps.
