Akon: 'America was never built for black people' | Talk to Al Jazeera

  • Senegalese-American artist Akon is a five-time Grammy nominee who has sold over 35 million records worldwide and has collaborated with some of the biggest names in popular music, such as Michael Jackson, Snoop Dogg, Lady Gaga and David Guetta.
    The musician, songwriter, and producer, who was born in the US but spent much of his childhood in Senegal, is also an activist and a philanthropist - and he has turned his sights on helping Africa.
    How many African-Americans do you know actually consider Africa as a vacation spot? Not one... Even just for knowledge, just to know where they came from, just to get an idea of what that is; there is so much fear instilled in them that they wouldn't even want to go there to visit. You mention Africa, they start shaking.
    Akon
    His current ambitious project, "Akon Lighting Africa," is working to bring solar-powered electricity to Africans in 49 countries by the end of 2020.
    Akon is also an ambassador for the non-profit organisation Peace One Day. Last year, he and actor Jude Law brought their celebrity power to Goma to a concert to promote peace in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
    But Akon has also caused controversy through his performance style and his lyrics.
    Akon talks to Al Jazeera about running his musical career as a business; his projects - both philanthropic and artistic; singing songs for peace and whether he thinks it can really make an impact; and being an African in the US.

      ***** Okay, it wasn't built for blacks because blacks get killed by police? what about all the white skinned and hispanics who also get killed? my family moved to the USA from Italy and they had it no easier than any other black american.. stop turning it into a black thing. its an american thing.. its hard for us all and we're all victims of a corrupt system and militarized police state.. what does the black community always have to make everything about them.. come on now.

I mean most of us are from West Africa but we have a pan African mindset (as in black people need to stick together) which a lot of Africans still stick to their tribes and don't worry about color. Do most Africans see it as silly or do they understand why most of us have a pan African way of thinking?

      Black Adam786 If I was rich and still abled, I too wouldn't want to just sit back, retire and do nothing. Effect your children positively to always aspire and when in a position put back by helping others - our own people first mainly cos no one else is. I'm raising my child that way. Akon's no hero, he's a true human among the many greedy selfish souls, rich or poor. Appreciate the Akons of this world sure but there are many people that would do the same just not in a position. So we raise our children to not be selfish and create many opportunities for them in America and UK built on a foundation that excludes black people to be a worthy human being as I'm sure Akon had a strong black mother.

    • @11kwright
      @11kwright 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hey There You are racist. America and UK is built on a foundation that excludes black people. My child is trying to get into the industry. He's a great singer, doing all the exams as other white kids. Coming 2nd in a competition of many and mainly white kids. Yet I said to his teacher - it's so not fair, he's doug all this work, going to auditions but West End (Musical Theatre) isn't built for black people cos his voice is much deeper than other children his gender and all the songs are mainly done for high voices. His teacher - white, totally and sadly agreed ans said it is hard cos you have to look at other areas. I didn't know what was meant by "white privilege" well I do now and this is just one experience. You white people wouldn't understand cos you are the system for better or for worse. plus note, Akon spent most of his young childhood in Africa. He's lucky enough to now have free movement and has accessed a world that he's above white privilege cos now he's more than that but still human and empathetic. However, my gorgeous son loves his place of birth and doesn't yet know the horrors out their - people. He's beginning to realise the world isn't fair and people, not all aren't too. You just posess ignorance and hate and spin things for your own benefit so you can sleep well with your denial. Black people must look to helpinf their race first and how they do that is their business cos much have been taken from them in the past. However, black people will also still help others regardless of race on a general scale. Black people generally don't hate as I've bought many homeless whites food and hot drink before (as an example) and other things. But if I was rich, I'd help my own people on a bigger more empowerment scale for their own benefit to access the world on an equal platform as other countries do. Just like the platform for white and black in the same wirld growing up together isn't equal - why do one race have to work harde than the other all the time when going through the same system!!!

      Africa is a huge continent comprised of many nations. So saying "going back to Africa" is vague. Secondly, African Americans ancestors originated in Africa but our cultural identities were destroyed when slave owners forced African slaves to assimilate into a heathenistic European culture that beat down the sense of African pride in our ancestors and separated families. We don't even know where on Africa our ancestors come from. Going back to Africa is relevant but an agonizing concept.

      Why is the tRUTH unbelievable, because the Tavistock Institute in London has deceived the masses, creating mass murder, mass hysteria, mass Politricks, Mass Educational deceptions, Mass Mobile Phone addiction, Mass News based on lies where everybody hear and read the same lies, and use the deception as TRUTHS. Mass Religous beliefs based on Lies, laced with political fantasies like the story of Cinderella, the Diana Princess of Wales Hoax, the Bishop called what Fairy Tales are made of, and told the people it was a Hoax and they still believed the lies, based on a arranged marriage to produce an Heir and a Spare, because of her youth, she was being used to fullfill a promise, an older lover could not fullfill, Camella Parker Bowles, the wife of an adulterer, and a Husband of an adulterer, No one speaks of the deception, only the Myth based on a LIE.

    Being born and raise in the US and our thoughts vacationing in African didn't exist until recently. I feel like I have been brainwashed most of my life because I was never taught about African culture and life. We have being learning US and European history which really doesn't relate to us. I have had the opportunity to travel the world in the past three years and I have had a mental shift. I reside mostly in the Middleeast, and it felt like I belonged on that side of the world. I have been to Africa, and it was a wonderful experience. It felt like I belong there. Akon is right. US black americans need to visit Africa.

But you have to dig to get this history .. You'll never find it in a school book! There's been a lot of pertinent history kept from us!! Knowledge is power .. something they DO NOT want us to gain!
