I love that he glossed over the "Princess Charm School" twist which is that Blair Willows IS ACTUALLY THE MISSING PRINCESS. And her aunt, who is the mom of the mean girl, KILLED HER PARENTS AND MEANT TO KILL BLAIR VIA A VIOLENT CAR CRASH AS A NEWBORN.
you make some good points but rating Mermaidia so low is a hate crime. the film is way more entertaining comparing to Fairytopia and also extremely feminist. growing up in the early 2000s, i think it was the first movie i personally saw where a girl actually saves the guy. that deserves a 5/5 for moral. especially in comparison to the first movie’s moral, which is basically succumb to the peer pressure of others and change yourself lol. also justice for Bibble.
I remembered it being in my top 3 Barbie movies, but when I rewatched it it absolutely did not live up to my memories, unlike the Princess and the Pauper and Fairytopia

Mattel purposely kept the new Barbie separate from the main continuity because people like Ted were getting too close to the truth. Barbie has been around for millennia and nobody can stop her plans for galactic domination
The fact that Kelly was bad at different skills in the early movies is the thing that sold me on the theory. She’s the only character that’s bad at anything and all of a sudden goes missing. Interesting…
@@pissum420 I kinda like the theory that Kelly is just a character as like a plot device in Barbies early movies at the start of her career, but then her career started to grow more and more that they eventually just left the character Kelly behind. She’s not actually canon to Barbies family.
@catejones3843 he's not the right guy for that, but it should be a factor. Bernadette Banner? She could comment on the fit and comfort as well as suitability for a princess or whatever role Barbie is essaying (if you will.) Haute Mode (I think that's his name). It’s funny because your Barbie lore premise of Barbie clones actually reminded me a lot of next Pattinson movie, directed by Bong Joonho. Ted was cooking and didn’t know back then lmao
I once owned a Kelly. One day I was playing with her on the headboard of my parent’s bed when suddenly she fell. I searched for hours, nay days, for Kelly. I convinced my parents to move their furniture around in search of Kelly that night and went to bed in utter disappointment at the loss. We moved out of that house in 2004 and I asked to look once more as we packed up their room and removed their furniture. Kelly was no where to be found. As an adult I theorize that she fell into a blackhole. Now I wonder, could this blackhole have been a result of Mattel wanting to reclaim their failed creation in an attempt to wipe their mistake from the face of the planet… but they mistakenly forgot to erase her from their first phase of films. We may never know.
Wow, good story .I once went to Mississippi for the summer as a teen. I had a Big fake ant 🐜 I threw it up and it went on the roof and I couldn't get it. We went back years later and while we were down there visiting, it rained and the ant 🐜 fell right in front of my sister and I 😂😂😂😂
It's so funny that you pointed it out, but there's a scene in Barbie: Life in a Dreamhouse where Barbie's youngest sister Chelsea opens up a lemonade stall and Raquelle visits the stall saying "Well! If it isn't my favourite Barbie sister, Kelly!" and she replies "It's Chelsea"
I love people experiencing bibble for the first time because I don't think Ted was ready to find out bibble is a STAPLE in the barbie fandom like we all love bibble so much

this video made me realize, why is it like a common thing for child’s fairytales to be about like medieval court intrigue? like why is it a common trope for childrens stories to be about ppl straight up trying to poison and kill a person for a throne?
Fairy tales generally come from the Grimm Brothers. Who, iirc, are Germans from the early 1800s. I think that's why. Also girls generally love princesses and princesses have courts
Because drama was more life threatening. I mean, not too medieval, but Alexander Hamilton did die in a duel bc of a literal dispute. If you go farther back than that, I’m sure throwing your life away for the sake of loyalty and legacy was very common back then. Add emotion and adventure to the pot and you got a beefy soup of drama. …I’ve also been very bias to the concept for as long as I can remember, but that’s just me. :)
besides all the other points mentioned by other people- i feel like it's a great way to introduce life-threatening situations to kids and making a drama of it without scaring them. as a kid i'd much rather deal with the idea of a witch poisoning a fairy than my favourite human character being threatened with something realistic ?? idk tbh
I watch this movie approximately once a week. It has helped me fall asleep for around 7 months now .... Thank you for reading this 22 year old college student from watching state barbie bedtime stories for months.... Very kind :) xoxo
The live action Barbie movie actually does fit with the decentralized hivemind theory. "Barbieland" is a Barbie hive. It's a place designed specifically for Barbies to live in. The Kens are a second class hivemind meant to serve the Barbie hivemind. The plot of the movie is about a singular drone escaping from the hivemind and returning to liberate her sisters from the oppressive rule of the hive. Meanwhile the lesser Ken hivemind tries to break free of the Barbies' control and establish themselves as the dominant hive.
another point here is why, in the barbie movie, does she not have a family? where is Chelsea, ect? they aren't there bc this hive is for the mature barbies
I never once imagined Ted would review such an iconic series of movies from my childhood, so Im going to take a shot in the dark and recommend a comprehensive Ninjago review next.
Thank you for covering the disappearance and replacement of Kelly. They actually did it with the real dolls too. As a Kelly, I loved that Barbie's little sister had the same name as me when I was little. Imagine my horror being grown up, having my kids and discover that Kelly has been REPLACED by Chelsea!?!?!!? I started to question everything. Did Kelly ever exist? Am I real? Is MY name Chelsea?
I’m being so sincere when I say thank you for putting so much effort into this video. The Barbie movies are my special interest, so seeing a creator I love talk about them with care and not just writing them off as valueless was really special for me
Now that you're done with the movies, it's time to watch all of Barbie: Life in the Dreamhouse, so you can REALLY understand the lore. I am expecting a deep analysis on the whole series by the end of this month
it's just an universe where that happens. if there can be a clone hivemind barbie, I don't see why there can't be talking animals and fairies (also not explained)
Can we just acknowledge that Ted didn't just rent the movies, BUT bought all of them. Not only was that dedication to the video but now he owns over 40 barbie movies forever now.
43:38 Mattel changed Kelly's name to Chelsea because some versions of the doll in other countries said "Shelly" on it and to avoid confusion Mattel decided to replace/ change Kelly's name all together and made Chelsea
Thank you!!! I used to swear her name was Shelly but when I was older her name was Kelly and I was just like, I must have remembered wrong!! Thank you!
My father worked on probably half of these in special effects (water, confetti, wind, sparkles. basically everything that is simulated and not hand animated). He's confirmed your theory. When I asked him about your barbie clone theory he got really weird about it, before breaking down into tears and telling me it was all true. He told me he wanted to deny it because anyone who knows the truth is at risk of revealing the secret to barbie. if she knows more than she is permitted it could throw her off her training and lead to the planets dying without her help in Barbie: Starlight Adventure. Be careful ted, for both your sake and the worlds.
@@Gggly2513 this isn't a story but more a fact I want to share! My father worked there for more than 16 years (I'm 20 so most my cognizant life he's worked there) and he became a senior effects director. so he'd been animating unicorn magic for 16 years, it takes a toll lol! edit: I thought 12 years but it was actually 16
I want Ted to make an entire movie now, where he plays a detective in the Barbie universe, who unravels the conspiracy. That scene with the intense violin and stuff where he figures it all out was great.
Ted, I hate to tell you this, but you haven’t unlocked all of the Kelly lore yet. There was one or a series of movies called “Kelly Dream Club” that were 2D animated episodes of Kelly and her friends transporting themselves into fantasy worlds and overcoming conflicts. All I remember is that Barbie was in them sometimes and Kelly was a main character
@@sarastwixationoh my gosh thank you for confirming that I thought that was the name of one of the characters but wasn’t sure I was remembering right, good to know I’m not going insane. Could this be even deeper Kelly/Chelsea lore? OoO
@@sarastwixationIt's so crazy how many characters in the Barbie universe share the same names. I'm pretty sure there's another character named 'Stacie' as well.
if you want to connect your theories to the live action Barbie movie, you could say that Kelly (who “died” cause she was defective) “grew up” secluded from others and be the live action Barbie and ended up becoming human, so she was replaced with Chelsea
Fun fact: Kelly and Chelsea are the same person! The name "Kelly" couldn't be used internationally, and in Europe, her name was "Shelly" so around 2010/2011 (when all of Barbie's sisters were getting new looks) Kelly changed her name to Chelsea so everyone would know her everywhere.
@@guyanomaly "Kelly" couldn't be used in Europe because of legal and copyright issues. Apparently it may have something to do with "The Kelly Family" (a band) being popular and having a trademark or something?
Masterpiece is exactly the word I was thinking! The breakdown of the lore at the end was magnificent. Way better than expected and honestly pretty compelling. 💯
Imma be honest, the scariest part of this whole video is that I had no idea I have seen basically all of the old movies as a kid... Every single time you switched to a new movies I was like "wait a minute this looks familiar, Ive seen this"
im like 90% sure the barbie diary came out when bratz became a thing. like its the whole "music, friendship and love" type of trope that the bratz basically capitalized on back in the early 2000s.
interestingly, on the barbie show on netflix, there is an episode where raquelle approaches chelsea and calls her kelly on accident. chelsea does correct her, but i find it interesting that they included that in the show.
That was probably a jokey reference to them having to change her name for marketing legality. Just poking fun at themselves. The Barbie show is truly unhinged and the TEA and shade it throws is iconic, I remember babysitting for my sister and it was just on in the background and it's the first time I sat and watched it. I later binged the show at home it was so funny
You have to be at least 18 to rent a car in Hawaii, so we know Barbie is at least 18 during Puppy Chase. So it's pretty amazing that her 7 year old sister comes off as the more responsible and level-headed one.
ur right they really should’ve kept fairytopia barbie as she was, i remember being a kid who was disabled and always hoping my legs would fix how barbie’s or ariel’s problems did 😭
especially that whole song ariel sings about how she wished she could walk, run, dance etc. i thought it was a beautiful song but it started meaning a lot more to me when i started understanding
i am barely into this video BUT for those who did not grow up watching these movies, most of the ones in the 2000s had a DVD voiceover in the selection menu where Barbie said something along the lines of "Hi! I'm Barbie, thank you so much for watching me in [movie title]" and then going through the different menu options
Kelly, having been rejected from the hivemind, became consumed by envy, concocting a grandiose plan of her own: to usurp the kingdom by any means necessary. She begins recruiting other defective Barbies and Kens, creating a series of evil aunts and uncles. However, they were all rejected from the hivemind for their lack of adherence, their inability to absorb the same level of skill. They become a chaotic ensemble of inept schemers, trying time and again to take over, but every time being thwarted by the increasing perfection of the hivemind. Kelly's not dead; Kelly is the Rejected
They have these ideas of gaining wealth and influence trained into them from birth. It's possible that after they were rejected, some of the programming still stayed, meaning they chase these concepts without truly thinking through their plans. The inevitability of failure doesn't truly occur to them because they have the same Barbie ideology we see being trained into Barbie's sisters in Puppy Chase: everything will be fine in the end, it doesn't matter what is happening now as long as my goal is met. They even keep the animal companions issued to them when they were still Barbies.
Fun BCU Fact: At the end of Magic of Pegasus, there’s a song that gets played called “Hope Has Wings” sung by a(n approximately) 16 year old Brie Larson, years before Captain Marvel, 21 Jump Street, or Scott Pilgrim! Don’t quote me but she might be the only actor that’s tied to both the BCU and the MCU. I think it’s a catchy uplifting tune and it makes me think of ice skating and pegasi :,) Edit: Nevermind! Kelsey Grammer is in both Swan Lake X-Men, and The Marvels. So there are more parallels than I thought.

Mattel purposely kept the new Barbie separate from the main continuity because people like Ted were getting too close to the truth. Barbie has been around for millennia and nobody can stop her plans for galactic domination
That checks out.

We may never know.

this video made me realize, why is it like a common thing for child’s fairytales to be about like medieval court intrigue? like why is it a common trope for childrens stories to be about ppl straight up trying to poison and kill a person for a throne?
I think one reason is because those stories are all in the public domain and it's an easy thing to adapt to whatever they want
Poison and potions are exciting like pirates and knights and ninjas
besides all the other points mentioned by other people- i feel like it's a great way to introduce life-threatening situations to kids and making a drama of it without scaring them. as a kid i'd much rather deal with the idea of a witch poisoning a fairy than my favourite human character being threatened with something realistic ?? idk tbh
i feel like a sleeper agent rn, i'm recalling more plots than i actively remembered watching

Real tho
Exactly what I thought 🙌🏼
Truth 😂
Exactly, the clones Ted was looking for were openly established from the beginning all along! xD
another point here is why, in the barbie movie, does she not have a family? where is Chelsea, ect? they aren't there bc this hive is for the mature barbies
I never once imagined Ted would review such an iconic series of movies from my childhood, so Im going to take a shot in the dark and recommend a comprehensive Ninjago review next.
