I just want to say that the original Rapunzel story does not feature the concept of painting, so yeah, Disney actually stole that from freaking Barbie of all things.

If I had a nickel for every time Disney stole a concept from Mattel, I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot, but it's funny that it happened twice
(Don't get me wrong, I love Tangled and Tangled The Series more than Barbie as Rapunzel, but I'm never not gonna be mad at them for Ever After High)

Disney didn’t steal it… Disney has been using Brother Grimms stories since the 1950s whereas barbie has only been using them since 2001 so eventually Disney would’ve done rapunzel even if barbie didn’t do it first :/ the stories are completely different the only similarities are the literally description of rapunzel from the original story from the 1800s

@@lunaraurora8308 It's interesting to note that Barbie movies often leave room for individual interpretation. In the movie "Barbie & the Diamond Castle," the characters are portrayed as friends. It's important to keep in mind that the movie was created during a time when same-sex marriage wasn't legalized in some places, including where I'm from, until 2017.
While the filmmakers may not have intentionally meant for the characters' dresses to represent their sexualities or any specific symbolism, viewers can still use their imaginations. For instance, if someone believes that one of the characters could be bisexual, that's a valid interpretation.
It's worth mentioning that the movie does not explicitly address any character's sexual orientation. However, part of the beauty of stories like these is that they allow viewers to explore their own narratives and imagine the characters in various ways. Perhaps, if there's another Barbie movie in the future that explores an LGBTQ storyline, it could shed more light on this topic.
Ultimately, it's up to each viewer to make their own connections and interpretations based on their beliefs and personal understanding.

32:59 so fun fact, the doll for aiden sold alongside the movie has rudimentary joint articulation in the elbows and knees for some weird, unexplained reason. meanwhile the annika doll had a weird dress changing mechanism i was never able to fully understand, so i remember the aiden doll a lot more fondly bc i thought the articulation was cool. however, i apparently liked it so much that eventually both of his arms just snapped off at the elbow, leaving him as a double amputee. so for the longest time, my favorite doll of all time was a ken doll with no arms, no shirt, and no shoes but somehow he kept his original pants. i miss him dearly, and i hope the void is treating him well

Okay, I gotta say it, Laverna is NOT Topaz's twin sister, she's the Enchantress's twin sister. Y'know, the ruler of Fairytopia and canonically the most magical fairy around?
Basically Laverna invited her sister over to "reconcile their differences" but actually put her in a magical coma. She then went about kidnapping the seven fairy guardians (one for each colour of the rainbow) in order to steal their magic to make her more powerful, whilst also poisoning all the flying creatures in the land so she can later offer an antidote to make them love her enough to crown her queen.

      @maryam.m ปีที่แล้ว +6

Thanks for the heart, Snug! First of all, I just want to say that the production quality on this video is incredible. A sponsorship and a 12 hour long shoot is no joke! It's giving Brian-David-Gilbert-losing-his-mind-over-the-Zelda-timeline energy and I absolutely love it.
Secondly, I'm reeling at the fact that you placed Island Princess above Princess & the Pauper. I actually shouted "YO, WTF!" as my brother walked into my room. (Of course, I have all of the songs from Island Princess ingrained in my brain and I think it's a great film, but P&P is simply top tier. Give me less uncanny elephant and more Princess Luciana & her evil mom and maybe we can renegotiate lol.)
Thirdly, I am very saddened that you do not have a soft spot for Rothbart. He may have his flaws, but he was a better father than most 😔 ... The rest of your criticisms are fair, though. If you want a more interesting retelling of the story, I highly recommend The Swan Princess animated film. It's truly a classic, and has one of the best opening sequences of any children's media. Plus, it's a musical!
Anyways, I appreciate the effort you took to play some of the games and watch all the Barbie films so far. You and your clone are strong men indeed 😉

And Erica is fully accepting and encouraging. No judgement there at all. Its super sweet.^^

I really like Barbie and the Secret Door! I honestly have memories attached to that!
On a local TV channel, Barbie movies used to play on Saturday and Sunday nights 8:30pm-10pm (this was like till 2015 or something, and then it suddenly stopped. Being that age, I was heartbroken). As a kid, my mother never let me watch the one on Sunday since I had school the next day, so I would long for those Saturday night movies. It also helped that I had restricted gadget usage (one of the best things my parents did)
So one Saturday, I watched Barbie and the Secret Door and loved it! Fast forward like 5 years later, and me getting a tablet to watch stuff on only for the summer. At that time, I was on a mission to watch all the Barbie Movis there were. I came across Barbie and the Secret Door once again, and loved it. I watched it like 5 days in a row with no recollection of having watched it earlier.
I realised much later that I'd seen it as a kid, and thought that the"girl with the pink hair" had been iconic (honestly, that's one of the only things I remember from when I watched the movie as a kid)
But yeah, that's the story! Overall, love the movie 💕

I hated The Barbie Diaries even as a kid, or rather I liked it the least as a kid bc I simply preferred the fantasy fairytale stuff, and as I got closer to the age of the characters in the movie the more I hated it bc I absolutely could not relate to a single thing about it.
Mainly I've just always generally had a deep dislike of the "getting wrapped up in popularity made you forget who your real friends are"-thing that were in so many early 2000-2010s teen media.
idk man, I'm just too autistic to empathize with the willingness to discard your friends and entire identity for the sake of an ultimately fruitless and meaningless attempt at social climbing so protagonists who did this just frustrated me bc it wasn't a lesson autistic 10-12yr old me needed to learn and couldn't fathom anyone else needing it
(although I know better now, as much as the concept still baffles me)
If I gave it a look now with a couple of friends I think I might enjoy it for how cheezy it is, but generally I still can't stand high school dramas.

So even though I found it boring at the start, when they introduced the diary I was like "FINALLY! NOW it gets interesting!" ...And then the movie says "it might be magic, maybe, actually no, it's not" and forgets about it.
I was also someone who could not understand that kind of plotline or setting, partly because of cultural differences. AND the "magic diary" was clickbait.
-2/10 they cruelly played with little me's heart and I was sad

Topaz was not the twin sister of Laverna. Laverna is the twin sister of the Enchantress.
To be fair to King Randolph they didn't plan 12 princesses, 1 pregnancy was twins and another was triplets. So it was 9 pregnancies.
I always found it weird how Azura was Elina's mentor despite Elina living under Topaz's domain.
There are four Musketeeers in the Three Musketeers movie. I know it says Barbie AND the Three Musketeers but she isn't called Barbie in the film.
So magic can exist in France but not America
The Charm School makes me concerned for the future of that world. Like these girls should be learning politics and economics and making alliances. They only do dancing and tea parties.

I’m sorry but I absolutely REFUSE. The first one is The Princess and The Pauper and that’s JUST AN OBJECTIVE, SCIENTIFIC FACT AND IMMUTABLE REALITY.

I’ve been overwhelmed/exhausted lately, but this video made me forget about all of it for just a little bit. Thank you for that. My top 3 Barbie movies are as follows:
    1. Barbie as the Island Princess
    2. Barbie and the Magic of Pegasus
    3. Barbie Mariposa.

12 dancing princesses was one of my favorites its not only based off the story and even though they might only have the princesses have one trait at the time it was enough to resonate with them.

1:40:30 New Yorker here. They would've gotten there much faster by train unless, you know, their station is skipped. Our trains don't break down as often as they used to. The only thing that causes delays is someone deciding to fight people.

Dear Snugboy, I’m about to make the most OBNOXIOUSLY long comment but I think it’s what this video deserves. This is easily my favourite retrospective related to this franchise yet.
Barbie Movies can be such a weird entity to review as a collective as the majority of them are so inherently subjective that you kinda have to tow the line between your own (often nostalgia-based) biases/opinions and considering their context as commercial productions to make it somewhat tangibly fair. You’re one of the few that actually bothered to consider that balance… not that I don’t enjoy the typical causal ranking that I see but the extra effort always makes these often loose arguments far more compelling.
I feel you also best understood what these movies should be like at their peak. None of these (except for possibly Pauper,) were ever meant to be viewed as critical darlings but imo they should at least be able to give a sense of the childlike lens, as if we’re watching a dramatised reentactment of some kid’s playtime. It’s why I tend to connect most with the ones that aren’t necessarily the most thought out or subversive storywise but are effective in keeping the high emotional stakes throughout. I’m very glad you chose to give Diaries and Island Princess some of the longest segments here as many people have never been able to get past the dramatic shift in Diaries’ choice of tropes and art direction, or the absurd, admittedly culturally-insensitive setup, and the heavily involved animal cast of Island Princess. You articulated so beautifully what made both of those films somehow work really well for me. I’ve never actually thought about how I tend to view the US high school experience depicted in fiction but it absolutely does feel like it’s own thinly veiled fantasy realm. I’m not American either but I think the majority would agree it’s a very generalised account.
I knew by the halfway point that you weren’t going to be putting as much time into discussing the post Classic films but I actually thought you had more to say than what the majority of them typically get. Some people don’t even bother talking beyond 2009 (tho I have been pleasantly surprised by how much love the 2010-2013 films have gotten in recent years.) I guess I’ll have to keep holding out on that deepdive on Netflix/Vlog Barbie as I CAN’T believe no one has tried to do this yet as there’s SO MUCH you can talk about with this era. It’ll require having to spend considerable more hours watching the Vlog catalogue and both Dreamhouse Adventures series…. I know it’s a lot to ask with the 42 theatric behemoth already there but it does provide some interesting background to the 2020 era films that very rarely gets acknowledged in these lists. But I can’t really fault you for investing the most time and passion into the ones the majority are actually familiar with and care about. It’s hard to argue against not getting excited about the mid 2010 ones… and that’s coming from someone who still had a good time with most of them for what they were.
I wish we had better names to define these different modern eras too but they’re nowhere near as clearcut as the Fairytale era was. I tend to view 2010-2013 as the Glam era, 2014-2017 as the Existential Crisis era (Plastic Sister era is pretty solid too,) and 2018-present as Vlogverse.
I love that you picked the Mariposa films as the times to mention the homoerotic subtext as most usually make that discussion with Diamond Castle and occasionally the later films with Dolphin Magic and Big City Big Dreams. You could easily dedicate a whole another video to discussing the potential subtext in ALL 42 of them, as even the earlier, more explicitly hetero ones have something there imo. It was comforting to know that you got Elise Allen herself to confirm that the subtext would have been at least welcomed by the team during her time, even if it wasn’t likely intentional.
Speaking of Elise Allen, I was THRILLED to see our Lord and Saviour Bibble give birth to this blessed interview and the exquisite imagery of one of his creators, who once knew him as BOBBLE…. now witnessing him be proudly displayed at a college frat-party. Such a SHAME you didn’t get the Kelly cameo as I’ve actually witnessed a certain podcast get the Special Shoutout sooooo they must’ve been an exception then.
I think I’ve gone long enough without outing myself as a fellow Australian. Now I’ve finally witnessed a significant enough Aussie’s take on Mermaid Tale 2…. I gotta air out my own grievances. I wholeheartedly agree with our shared grief that it took place in Sydney and you taking the trouble to fly over to personally flip off the Opera House. I don’t necessarily agree with choosing Melbourne tho as the beaches there are either far too underwhelming or cold to be a believable spot for a surf comp unfortunately (Geelong/Torquay or Ocean Grove might the best we’d get.) I’m actually a born regional Victorian similar to you but moved to Adelaide right before high school if you were wondering.
I’ll wrap it up here but I’m still pressed to say few more minor things. 12DP and Diamond Castle are prob in my own top 5 but I’m forgiving of your indifference as I tend to have a similar ‘Generally Pretty Solid but Big Heavy Nostalgia Glasses’ with them like you do with Rapunzel. I’m glad someone said SOMETHING about Vlogverse Ken’s ill-fitting hairstyles and most urgently; you addressed Wolfie and Serafina’s many, many, MANY kittens. I genuinely have had lost sleep over that detail of their excessive procreation. Good Night.
