@@stealthyguy1784 i think I can relate to what you feel… realizing that it is a positive feedback loop is important.. all of those dreadful thoughts are not you assessing reality but the anxiety itself, you have to realize that as bad a feeling as you might have, the chances of something really bad happening to you are slim to none because those feelings do not stem from external stimuli or input but from us fixating on it, the more you look at it the worse it looks. Results were really grounding for me so I’d try to focus on doing things with short term results in order to bring me back to reality, for example going on a walk, if I felt even a tiny bit better I’d use that as a grounding point thinking “see, you’re not doomed, you still respond to actual real world events”… patience and hope are your two most important tools in this! Hey Shaun, has anyone ever talked to you about existential thoughts concerning free will? Because depersonalisation can make you feel like a robot, and your feeling of free-will feels external to you. I was reminded of the quote “Man can do what he wills, but he cannot will what he wills”. This whole ordeal made me very anxious and gave me feelings of panic.
Don't worry, the content of the thoughts doesn't matter, they're still ultimately driven by anxiety, they're temporary and harmless and will fade away and stop as your recovery continues 😊 www.dpmanual.com/articles/depersonalization-fears-and-anxious-thoughts/
Thank you for this, really needed it. I have a question- I'm at university at the moment and whenever I travel back home (not very often) i often feel like I forget who I am and what ive been doing at uni, as if I tie my memory's and self to my surroundings which are taken away from me when I am in an unfamiliar environment. anyone else?

Hey i love your dpdr videos, they motivate me so much! I have been suffering from dpdr for 2 months bc of a bad trip. In the beginning it was so bad I felt like I was in a dream, everything was so strange and I completely lost touch with reality. I was always afraid to go out and always checked if I felt normal again. Now I am no longer afraid and have accepted the feeling. Everything feels a little more normal. But what is worse now is that people look so strange to me, I always wonder why we look like that and how we can live, speak, walk. People look so strange. I somehow can't understand that. I know it sounds soch strange. Is this normal and will it go away at some point?
Hey Sara, thanks for your comment 😊 Sorry to hear you've been having a difficult time, but don't worry, everything you're describing sound consistent with DPDR. It's harmless and temporary and yes it will go away 😊 www.dpmanual.com/articles/back-to-normal-after-depersonalization/ I know it can be scary but just remember that DPDR is a natural reaction to stress and anxiety, and people experience it all the time. The National Institute on Mental Illness estimates that up to 75% of people experience at least one depersonalization / derealization episode in their lives. It's part of your brain's natural defence mechanism and usually it only lasts a few seconds or minutes at a time. It's only when it's focused on as a separate problem (feeling like you're going crazy / in a dream etc) that it can turn into a feedback loop with the anxiety that caused it in the first place. But no matter what caused it or how long you've had it, you can always switch it off completely by stopping that anxious feedback loop. Make sure to carefully read through all the articles and info on my website at www.dpmanual.com and my book The Depersonalization Manual. And if you would like to speak to a medical professional please don't hesitate to do so. I would recommend finding an anxiety specialist if possible as they will likely be more familiar with DPDR 👍

Hey everyone, I had a confusion regarding DPDR. I know what the condition is, how it works etc. But the only thing I'm confused about is whether DPDR's objective is to: - disconnect us from the ANXIETY caused by the stressful situation or - disconnect us from the stressful situation and NOT the anxiety caused as a result of the situation An example of this would be if I was in the wild, getting chased by a lion, and my body would trigger DPDR, would the objective of DPDR be to disconnect me from all of the anxiety that I would have in that moment due to the situation, or would the objective of DPDR be to disconnect me from the situation itself (the lion chasing me). I hope I did a good job in explaining what my question is. I'd really like some answers:)
Disconnect you from reality to make the stressful situation less conscious and vivid. The anxiety is what caused the episode, that part doesn't get removed.

Hey Shaun. So I took a edible form of Cannabis two months back. For the very first time. And till date, I suffer from extreme memory loss. I have lost track of time and after every day, when I come back to my bed, my memory kind of resets and I question everything that I have done in the day. Whether it really did happen or was it all just a dream. When I am talking to someone too,I just get hyper aware and my mind kind of plays tricks with me and tells me I’m dreaming. I feel really stressed, and uncomfortable. What do I do???

i had the same thing from an edible! my friend took me over, sat me down, gave me a mug of warm milk with honey, and talked gently to me, showed me some universe stuff on his screen, and i kinda got in some kind of trance.... i slowly felt better over the next weeks, and finally i was all good :) it will get better... i believe you might need something to "reprogram" the bad trip, something nice and calming to show you that there is something nice out there. cuddling animals helps if you like that.
Hello! I am your Russian subscriber and I watch all your videos, and I have also read your book! Now I am in a state of DP for 6 months and I really want to write a comment after recovery, too, that I coped and overcame it! Please tell me such thoughts as: "Am I a person?" "Why do people need money if we are just a walking body" everything around seems strange, for example, using social networks, going to the store and so on, it's very difficult to explain it, but I tried… Does this all have to do with existential thoughts? I really hope for your answer!

hi I am a Japanese person who exchanged Gmail with you. 2years ago. I'm sorry for my unskilled English. I forgot about depersonalization for a while, but recently I feel like I'm going insane because of the panic on the train. Especially when I get on a vehicle, I seem to panic. I think you can get on a airplane now, but do you ever find yourself panicking when you think back to when you were suffering from depersonalization? Isn't the experience of depersonalization itself traumatic? Someone once told me that panic and anxiety are process of healing depersonalization. He said that I was getting out of off mode and that I was starting to feel reality but my mind wasn't ready for it yet.

I'm not a fan of how you laugh about and trivialize anxiety. I get that it's an expression of recovery and success, but dpdr is not only anxiety. Maybe this framing helps people who get it as an adult, and from an acute experience, but for me, who had experience of dp as early as 3 years old and cemented into it around 12-14 and didn't become real until 29 years old, no amount of telling me it's just anxiety would help. Thankfully Keelan later mentions how dodr is a tool our brain uses. It's related to but distinct from anxiety. I think fear is a better generalizing term than anxiety. Anyway i like how you both transition away from trivializing anxiety

But after almost 2 year i had another panic attack i woke up in the middle of the night not knowing who im i or where i am .that feeling got me a big panic attack i thought that i was going to die and that is death but after 3 days i was with some friends i felt like im disconnected from the world and everything is fake even my friends like nothing makes sense in the world i live in i had another panic attack and now i feel that i forgot how normal feels like and I'm stuck in the cycle again with thoughts that im never going to recover again because it's the second time having this and i wasted 2 years of my life and its like it was a dream i dont know but that feelings make panic and i want to cry like im am so sensitive and i forgot what being and feeling normal is and i want my life back with alot of frustration i dont know how to explain this uncomfortable scary feelings and toughts
Even thinking about the fact that i could have it again scares me and right now i have this frustration of im i feeling normal or its dpdr feelings and I'm lost and i dont khow what's normal also feeling that I'm not familiar with my self abd the world around me
Thank you for your video. I’m been dealing with vision related anxiety symptoms for over a year now. I feel like my vision is blurry fussy hazy etc. almost like my brain and eyes aren’t on the same page floaty off feeling. Ugh so frustrating prescription glasses help at time but most of the time not. HELP!!!!
The same is happening to me, sometimes i feel like my head is separate from my body, i cannot concentrate on anything, my eyes cannot focus, supermarkets etc are the worst, i feel i cannot see products clearly...

Don't worry, having temporary anxious associations with certain environments is very common with DPDR and all anxiety-based conditions. I know it can be frustrating but it's harmless and temporary and will fade away and stop as your recovery continues 😊

Hey Sara, thanks for your comment 😊
Sorry to hear you've been having a difficult time, but don't worry, everything you're describing sound consistent with DPDR. It's harmless and temporary and yes it will go away 😊 www.dpmanual.com/articles/back-to-normal-after-depersonalization/
I know it can be scary but just remember that DPDR is a natural reaction to stress and anxiety, and people experience it all the time.
I’m telling you it fades away! You will get better the more you recover! 32:49 32:50 32:51

Hey everyone, I had a confusion regarding DPDR. I know what the condition is, how it works etc. But the only thing I'm confused about is whether DPDR's objective is to:
- disconnect us from the ANXIETY caused by the stressful situation
or
- disconnect us from the stressful situation and NOT the anxiety caused as a result of the situation
An example of this would be if I was in the wild, getting chased by a lion, and my body would trigger DPDR, would the objective of DPDR be to disconnect me from all of the anxiety that I would have in that moment due to the situation, or would the objective of DPDR be to disconnect me from the situation itself (the lion chasing me).
I hope I did a good job in explaining what my question is. I'd really like some answers:)
Disconnect you from reality to make the stressful situation less conscious and vivid. The anxiety is what caused the episode, that part doesn't get removed.
@@Gardeez Hey thanks for the reply. I figured this out a few days after I commented, and yes I came to the same conclusion as you. Reading you say the same thing is a great reassurance. I wish you all the best with your journey and I hope you're well.

Thanks for your comment and don't worry, concentration + memory issues are very common with DPDR 😊 I know they can be frustrating but they will fade away and stop as your recovery continues: www.dpmanual.com/articles/depersonalization-and-memory-loss/
i had the same thing from an edible! my friend took me over, sat me down, gave me a mug of warm milk with honey, and talked gently to me, showed me some universe stuff on his screen, and i kinda got in some kind of trance.... i slowly felt better over the next weeks, and finally i was all good :) it will get better... i believe you might need something to "reprogram" the bad trip, something nice and calming to show you that there is something nice out there. cuddling animals helps if you like that.

Hello! I am your Russian subscriber and I watch all your videos, and I have also read your book! "Why do people need money if we are just a walking body" everything around seems strange, for example, using social networks, going to the store and so on, it's very difficult to explain it, but I tried… Does this all have to do with existential thoughts? I really hope for your answer!

I have family who have been said to have mental illness so when I was overwhelmed I thought I was going insane/crazy like my family. hi
I am a Japanese person who exchanged Gmail with you.

Hi Isaac, check out this article, I think you'll find it useful: www.healthline.com/health/anxiety/anxiety-nausea
I have suffered since I was 17 and am 46 now. Tried my best.
