      Hi Finn, I’m curious if you experienced hyperawareness of existence/conciousness. I related with a lot of what you said, and turning to spirituality etc. People telling me “I’m having a spiritual awakening” gave me more things to obsess over until I realized it was bs.
      I have been like this for 3 months now and it was triggered from a panic attack after watching a video on “simulation theory”. Then spiraled from there researching all sorts of different philosophical theories. Now I’m left with just this hyperawareness like I said ^ of existence/being a conscious being and not knowing how and it’s all I think about 24/7. DPDR just makes those thoughts even worse. Did you experience this?

      @@CourtneySDawn yep for sure. You just got to see all those thoughts as part of DPDR and not anything else. They will disappear as you begin to recover. Just do your best to calm your nervous system and know that it's just the anxiety and panic attacks taking over your thoughts.

    I suffered Depersonalization and derealization for 4 months and honestly that was my hardest battle, please if you are dealing with it, make sure you go on about your life as you did before, get busyyy, I cannot stress this enough, workout to curb the insomnia and have a schedule. I enrolled for CPA and the intensity of the course hastened my recovery, I later realized it wasn’t my thing but am grateful because it got me better, dpdr is your brain shutting off because it is protecting yourself from pain, don’t panic, this disorder feeds off from anxiety, get out toxic situations!

    People, you are not alone and it DOES get better. Believe me, I was hopeless some months ago but nowadays after understanding it, thanks to this men, I can say for sure that it does disappear. Keep your heads up! You are gonna make it.

    I just found about this channel and dpdr today and I have to say you have helped me immensely just after watching a few of your videos. I cant believe that what I thought was a massive reality shattering existential revelation is just overblown anxiety… In trying to fix my condition which i didnt understand at all I too stumbled upon meditation, allan watts, psychedelics and the various spititual gurus preaching about enlightenment, the dissolution of ego and mystical experiences. I got super obsessed with it. I was convinced that after learning the sacred truth about the nature of reality I had set myself on a spiritual path I can never stray away from again and my life will never be the same. The person I once was is forever gone and enlightenment awaits as there is no other way out of this hell. Ive never had to endure such mental torture and hearing other people going through exactly the same thing just helps me so much. I wholeheartedly agree that people should be careful around eastern spirituality as it seems to be around every corber nowdays. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. This channel is a gold mine and I cant believe this condition isn’t better recognised. I could have saved myself years of suffering had I heard this stuff sooner.

    Finally recovered after 18 months. I still wear sunglasses all the time though because of light sensitivity. I started feeling normal again a month ago.❤

    Hi DP Manual, I am Skylard Dela Cruz 18 years old from Philippines, Tanay Rizal. I had both dp/dr disorder last year and fully recover this year. If you would allow me to share what I have experience that time I glad that chance. My experience was so terrible at all and I think I am also one of person having a deep thought and imagination during my dp/dr but now I am good and fully recover without any treatment or therapy.     I remember i when i had massive family problems and such a big stress then i woke up one day having strange dizziness feeling that i have never felt in my whole life then it kept getting more bad and I thought that i have a brain problem or heart problem and i kept panicking many times till i had irritable bowel and it bothered me badly during my exams, then one day i was scrolling down google searching for these symptoms then i knew what i have, and since i found ur channel i started to get better and i just wanna thank u very much and i wanna tell u keep going on helping people, god bless u bro ♥️♥️

    Hi Shaun. extremely grateful for all your efforts in helping others with this difficult condition. I've been suffering since almost 3 years now. I have nearly all symptoms of DPDR, but some are recently being more serious and frightening that keep me thinking that I have a more severe case of DP. I know you have said there is no such thing, but I can't help it! I am scared ALL the time, like literally every single second, my vision is grey! as if I am seeing the world from behind a blurry black glass. Reality is not real, negative obsessive thinking is not stoppable, my body is not mine and my past life is like a finished movie or dream! I am EXTREMELY hysterical and can't believe or stand the situation even after 3 years! and I go through severe tantrums EVERYDAY.. I keep crying and screaming and raving until i became exhausted! .. I have this terrible feeling that my case is so difficult to be treated!
    Is there hope for me with these horrible symptoms????? Thank You.

    been struggling since a bad trip off of marijuana, im in the middle of recovery & have had a few set backs but i will say the vision thing and even hearing things can sometimes sound far away, sometimes & it sucks.. i catch myself zoning out a lot, not feeling connected to my body.. my voice feels weird even my limbs & occasional physical numbness. But it’s weird to look at things, i can’t describe it but once i’m distracted all those feelings go away and i forget i even have drdp until i go reality checking. so glad to see this is being talked about more and more!! thank you for sharing!!

    Shaun.. What you talked about at 1.35 - 1.40 ish was HUGE. Even just this conversation has been a big thing for me, and you explained so well exactly what I have expirienced myself. I believe dpdr can happened to anyone, but its easier for those with more of an open mind.

    When my DPDR started, after searching my symptoms, anxiety disorders, depression, panic disorder and OCD came up. I wished I’d of seen DPDR first, it would have saved so much time worrying about having these conditions. OCD seems to fit because you’re so obsessed with getting back to yourself (obviously) and trying to get rid of the existential thoughts. It seems this is a common theme amongst DPDR sufferers

    My family feels like strangers, I can’t drive (i feel like the passenger ) it’s been 10 years I literally feel mentally slow and terrified daily… I quit speaking to people bc I feel like I’m in a dream.. I can only focus on one item in the room and don’t recognize my reflection .. my dad passing away triggered this I was looking for him at his funeral (2018) I thought I was just depressed for years 😞

    I’m still experiencing this and there is times where I just cannot stop thinking about reality. And I’m starting to slowly understand why I’m experiencing this and everything but it all started with so much stress over from surgery, work, and everything else and I remember where I just stopped and focused on the stress and paused and tried my best to fight the stress and that’s when this entire derealization started. And I’m just hoping this isn’t permanent and I’ve got to find ways because it’s scary. And when I try to not think about and when I feel better I get headaches and that’s when I start to think something is wrong with me. I just hope I’m ok. And my vision was so blurry and it felt like my surroundings wasn’t real like I wasn’t here.

      Hey, thanks for your comment 😊 I know DPDR can be scary but just remember that it’s a natural reaction to stress and anxiety, and people experience it all the time. The National Institute on Mental Illness estimates that up to 75% of people experience at least one depersonalization / derealization episode in their lives. It's part of your brain's natural defence mechanism and usually it only lasts a few seconds or minutes at a time. It's only when it's focused on as a separate problem (feeling like you're going crazy / in a dream etc) that it can turn into a feedback loop with the anxiety that caused it in the first place. But no matter what caused it or how long you've had it, you can always switch it off completely by stopping that anxious feedback loop. Make sure to carefully read through all the articles and info on my website at www.dpmanual.com and my book The Depersonalization Manual.

    I would def say health anxiety and dpdr can have a very strong connection. I started off with a Huge panick attack in fact I would probably call it a nervous breakdown because I convinced myself I had motor neurone disease and from that panic came Dpdr in fact depersonalisation is the symptom I am left with now it is getting better but I do still feel strange inside my own body and mind but the recovery videos show that no matter how odd full recover will happen, it’s what our mind wants just have to be patient and remember we are ok

    this is very helpful!! was wondering if people develop DPDR without any trauma ? My first episode hapoened when I was going to sleepover at a friends house, I havent been through any majour trauma but still feel dreamy every once in a while

    Great video!! I was wondering if dpdr can cause you to question or fear dreams you've had? Or just cause you to think about them a lot? Ive noticed with myself a lot of my other struggles are similar to others with dpdr, except for this one! (Which is thinking about my dreams a lot)

    I had a major blackout from drinking and days after I started feeling this way. So I quit alcohol and it's been getting better. Week five rn and I'm not sure if this is because I quit (because I was a heavy drinker) or if this is just new or because of the black out. It's really scary so thank you

      Definitely check your health out with a doctor to be sure you're good physically before moving on to fixing the issue completely mentally. But eventually, no matter what the issue is, it can always be fixed with enough effort and knowledge.
      And also the things that you can't control aren't a part of yourself. They are what they are. You are all the things that you can do. There's no sensible reason to worry about the impossible. There's a great reason you'd want to shape yourself/maximize what is in your control. That is your reality afterall. Stay strong!

    One of the major symptoms I’m experiencing is my voice, It was the first ever symptoms I’ve experienced, my voice isn’t as deep and loud as it used to be, and people can hardly ever hear what I’m saying.
    one of the major ways to recover from DP is by socializing but it really is extra intimidating and frustrating trying to talk to people and socialize when they cant even hear me.
    Basically saying my voice sounds completely different from my normal voice and has gotten way more quiet than usual.
    I need some advice how to cope with it.. given not many people has experienced this symtom

    I am suffering from 2018 / one day i woke up and was going to office i felt nothing real i felt whats wrong with me / i went into severe depression n anxiety due to this ! I 24/7 thought of my vision / went to pshyciatrist / after taking medication i felt better my depression was gone i was happy but my DP DR never went away / i have severe health anxiety and its increasing day by day / with small small issues my anxiety gets triggered and than everything feels unreal and i worry more than / when my anxiety is normal i still feel this way but i dont focus on it much // well i sometimes doubt may be its not due to my anxiety reason is even i am happy enjoying my life my vision is same unreal feels like hang over kind of / like dreamy state blurry state / when i hve anxiety this gets more bad like than i feel my mind is lost somewhere / i am somewhere else and my mind is somewhere else // i have been on anti depressents for my anxiety which seems of no help because any health issue triggers it badly / and i go into same loop !     @dpmanual I have purchased the manual and have been using it as a guide. My issue is that I do feel out of reality with a ton of floaters but the main theme of my DPDR is a complete existential crisis. No matter what the existential thought is, it is all terrifying. I find myself deeply depressed. Like I wish I didn’t exist but there is no solution for it. Was this something you dealt with as well?

    I lived this... after a narcissistic abuse of 4 years... I wasn't recognizing my car which I had for a year, I felt like it wasn't mine... I got lost coming back from my father's house where he was living for 12 years, I suddenly no longer recognized the path to take. I felt like I was in the walking dead series.
    I remember I had some "brain shut down" moments, like if I was falling asleep + fainting at the same time... I don't know if I explain it the right way but I was really tired and confused.
    It is the worst time of my life

      @@michael5089 have you seen a doctor or psychiatrist? You need medication to get out of there my friend, it will help you to come back to reality, is there stressful things or people around you? If so, you need to cut ties with those things/people

      Same here. I honestly dont even remember how exactly I got out last time, and now I'm back in it. My favorite activities, reading science articles, playing DnD with my college friends over video call, bird watching, watching streamers I enjoy, playing video games I enjoy, world building, story crafting, comics, and so many other things. I feel like my sense of humor is gone, my enjoyment for things is gone, that passion and emotional intensity that I slowly got back after my first time, is just gone. I remember looking forward to things, worrying about real life problems, being able to talk and communicate with my coworkers, and finally being able to d things on my own now that I have a paying job, but... now nothing. So many things that I had put off for the longest time, waiting until I could afford them, and now that I can.... I cant even enjoy them. So many times I remember avoiding streams/videos of my favorite games, waiting until I could experience them myself, and now... I can't. I feel like I cant draw, write, create, play, explore, or connect with anyone anymore. Its only been 3 weeks.

    I am suffering from same kind of symptoms / even i am happy i hVe no anxiety at times i still feel this way but i dont focus on it but when my anxiety is really bad like if i get stressed i will have bad days like where i will have this feeling too much and i wont be able to do anything just focus on my head vision and all stuff !     6 years later I’m still confused if I really have dpdr or not. I have read your manual and a lot of it fits and makes sense. I don’t feel like I’m watching myself from above or behind a glass wall though. It’s almost like I’m always in “first person” vision. Almost like I’m sitting inside my head looking out my eyes. Idk, hard to explain. I feel like I’m getting dumber as time goes on and I never hear anyone mention that. Like I can’t learn or retain information. I have a hard time looking at my kids and accepting they are real people and I made them. I must sound nuts. I’ve been to multiple doctors. All day anxiety. Been put in ssri meds, anti psychotics, epilepsy meds. I’ve tried it all. Constant physical anxiety symptoms all day every day. I know the physical stuff is anxiety and that doesn’t scare me anymore. Does any of this make sense?

    What does DPDR recovery look like ? I’ve been in it for 4 months and the more I’ve gotten an understanding of it , the more I notice I’m having longer periods of times of not noticing it . And for four days I still had it , BUT I actually felt normal . I would be in public and people actually felt real to me . Everything felt so normal and then I think I subconsciously got stressed again and the dissociation got sensitized for a few days after that but now that my stress is back down again It’s not as sensitized . It goes up and down . Does that sound like recovery ? Even though it’s up and down . Some days it’s more sensitized than others but other days I’m not noticing it , and for once in 4 months I had those 4 days where I still had it , but I not only was able to look past it but I actually FELT like life was normal .

    What I would like to ask to Finn and to you too Sean is how have you guys managed to still be able to play music. I’ve watched some of your videos by now and they’ve become a life changer, the improvement on my condition overall was massive. But I’m still completely unable to play, and I’m a professional musician, which makes my life completely disfuncional. Did dpdr alter your playing in any level like that?

      Great question Brittney! I think it depends on where you are in your recovery process. If you're just finding out what DPDR is, they can be a great explainer and reminder that you can and will recover. If you're closer towards recovery and have understood and internalized what the condition it (and that you don't need to be afraid of it!), you could probably refer to them less and less. In general what I'd suggest is that you can use them as positive reinforcement, but you should be aiming to use them less and less in time (I explain this process at length in The DP Manual). And what you always want to avoid is going down TH-cam / Google research rabbitholes. Hope that helps! 😊

    Hey Shaun! I just had one question. I experienced derealization for a few months and while it has mostly subsided, the existential thoughts have remained. I am a pretty religious person, but I am very concerned and anxious about simulation theory which would essentially make my religion false. A lot of people say “if your life was a simulation, what would it change.” But this would change my entire worldview. I’m just wondering if I can get back to my beliefs if I just let the thoughts be there and then come back to it in a couple months when my anxiety is lessened?

    Dear shawn I have a doubt.... 10 months ago I had a panic attack during an evening likely around 8'o clock from that day onwards I'm very anxious while the sun goes down, getting intrusive thoughts, my nervous system will become super sensitive and fear of losing control...when the sun is setting down.... I'm have been like this for 10 months.... I don't know whether it's dpdr or not but i don't have any single symptom of dpdr other than this.... Is this just an anxiety or a kind of DPDR??     Hi Shawn does it affect words and choice making what i mean thinking became almost impossible reading was like impossible i would try read but didnt understand what i was reading watching movies was the same couldn't follow the plot and it made me more anxious i became isolated i didnt recognize my self in the mirror but making sentences and finding words was the most scary it really made me feel alone 😔😔😔😔

    this is the only recovery story where depression was mentioned. my main problem now is the overwhelming feelings of depression. i don't know how to handle it should i just go on with my life and ignore it or should i take medication? i have suffered for 5 months without medication it will be so bad for me to take them now.

    Hey, is it normal for me to get triggered when I hear a car drive by, hear rain, look in the mirror or at my hands or just hear my own voice?     Did/does anyone have sound symptoms to? Best way I can describe is when a sound happens there like thunder while hearing the sound?

      Yes, it feels kinda the same like with vision where the senses are overactive. I feel some unexpected sounds are super loud

    as of this year, it's my 7th year as well.
    At first, it was constant anxiety, panic attacks and fucked up vision problems... but eventually anxiety faded away but depression took me over.
    I still remember having MRI scan on my brain and seeing an optometrist only to find nothing.
    I used to visit doctors so frequently that eventually, few of them started calling me hypochondriac, so i started to hate doctors and think of them as incompetant.
    After that, I don't even bring up about my DPDR (doctors don't even know what it is). My family doctor to this day, don't know of my DPDR. She only deals with my anxiety and depression.

    I have cognitive issues also since the onset of dpdr..i cant apply my brain and think sharply..is this a symptom of this?in my daily life also i cant apply my intelligence

      That I have difficulty grasping information and retrieving it in my mind..I think it is not about concentration..it is very difficult to understand things even simpler things sometimes...I feel my brain is not working fine and I can't process information...can u let me know what's happening

    What if it’s the existential thoughts that triggered it and keep giving you anxiety/dpdr? I can ignore dpdr most of the time Iv had it before years ago but along with existential anxiety’s it’s like this cycle combination.. I feel hyperaware of conciousness/existence in general and it gives constant anxiety and then the depersonalization/derealization sensations make it so much worse and feel so real

      You don’t need medication to recover, but I’ve been taking bupropion and it just dims down the anxiety a bit. Puts some of the thoughts more towards the back of your mind

    Not many people have 1hr plus to listen to this. Also massive focus on what you did “wrong” Vs what was implemented that was critical for recovery. Just some feedback, would be much more helpful if it was max 25 mins and more focused. The man who recovered though- Irish guy is very funny!
