  • Love it or hate it, the rear parking brake on the Honda Goldwing DCT needs adjusting from time to time. I show you the ins and outs of getting this done instead of having the dealer take more of your hard earned money.

    Hi Rick. Thanks for putting this info together. It's just what I needed to tackle this project. I did find what I believe to be an error however. I don't believe the features you measured for the coarse adjustment are the correct ones. The parts you measured are both fixed. No amount of cable adjustment will affect them. The correct feature to measure is from the center of the ferrel at the end of the cable on the left, to the spring seat on the right.
    Thanks for covering this really useful topic. I will be subscribing!

      Hi Bill. Now that you point out the error with main spring measurement, you are absolutely correct. I’m measuring from two fixed points which doesn’t make sense. Thanks for pointing that out. And thank you for subscribing.

    Just some honest, and well intentioned, critique here. When you get into the first adjustment, you focus on spring length but then provide video focused on two mechanical pivot points below the actual spring itself. I reran the clip several times and just can not pick up, or associate, the micrometer view to the spring view. Added to this is the lack of exact identification of the points of measurement other than pointing your finger in a general direction. Maybe consider using a small pointed object and hold it on the two points of measurement. Seeing as you are using a micrometer, it would seem to make sense to clearly identify the reference points. And back to the actual points measured, how would these two mechanical pivot points vary the measurement seeing as they are fixed and do not have an arched range of motion as does the metal piece that holds the brake cable barrel end? So for me, I just skipped this first piece and moved to the second piece which I found easy to understand and duplicate the steps. My 2021 DCT Tour’s parking brake has been almost completely useless since day 1 of ownership. Any slight incline, and the brake just didn’t provide any meaningful resistance. So I thank you for providing this helpful video and again hope that you can accept how the first section came across to me.

    HeY, I am new to the GW world with a 2022 GWB DCT. I have already done (mistakenly) exactly what you described. Drove off with parking brake on…even smelt brakes! Figured it was a truck in traffic with brake issues. Nope! It was me! Lesson learned. Thanks for the great explanation and demo video.

    Thanks for the video. I have the service manual but I am not very mechanical and it helps to see it. I first adjusted mine in 2019 and just did it again (11/24/21). It was within spec but not holding. About a half turn made it just right - loose on zero clicks, small drag at one, locked at four.
    The only frustrating part was I didn’t have a 12 mm wrench. My metric set has 10, 11, 13, 14, and 17. I have never used the 11.

    Hay Rick how are you I am a new subscriber to the channel and i looked at your video on how to adjust your parking brake on the 2018 goldwing and it was very informative thank you for that information because I have ride off on several occasions with my parking brake on & burnt my pads up so as a result I am in need of new pads,
    Anyway in your video u mentioned about a parking brake Interlock to install from electrical connections i think this is a great item for the 2018 goldwing so can u please do a video on how to install this item & also new bake pads sometimes in the future i feal this is a safety item & hounda should have included this from the manufacturer so thank you Rick I will be looking at the channel if you do these videos have a great day thank you & keep putting out those great videos ride safe .

      I plan on putting out a brake pad change video in the near future. As far as the EC parking brake installation. If I decide to upgrade to the part that disables the engine, I will surely make an install vid. There is. It a lot of “how to” out there. Ride safe my friend and thank you for subscribing.

  • @steveharleyfan

    Thanks for this, Rick. Just a quick query about the measurement with the vernier you did - you were measuring from the centre of the pivot for the brake actuator to the clamp for the outer of the cable. Do these actually change? I would have thought you need to measure from the end of the inner cable to the end of the outer so effectively the spring length at "one click". If out of spec you would adjust the length of the spring as you described under the engine cover. Please let me know if I'm wrong !!!

    • @ridenwithrick3771
      @ridenwithrick3771  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You ate absolutely correct. Another subscriber also pointed out my mistake. The spring measurement in the repair manual is not very clear but the measurement should be taken at the spring and not the two fixed points. However, as the measurement goes at the spring, it’s important to measure with the fixed points in a plane. But yes, you are correct. You most likely are within spec regardless and your adjustment would be at the screw.

    • @drmdtodd
      @drmdtodd 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You are absolutely CORRECT... The measurement is for the length of the spring at the top...

    Save a ton of money. Buy the maintenance videos from Cruiseman’s Garage and/or Fred Harmon. The manual is crazy expensive and not written for the average guy, Honda Mechanic yes but nowhere near the DYI videos. I’ve done all the tasks except valve adjustments and actual tire changes. Thousands of dollars saved in hourly labor charges that range $125 to $175. Two oil changes will pay for both sets of videos. Do a third and that will pay for your repair manuals. Chilton manuals in the past were the cats meow, to bad they are out dated. They were for the owner. Still have mine from my 1976 Honda CB750. Check sample videos at their websites and follow their vlogs and Moto logs.

      Agree. Always park nose up. The bike does a pretty good job holding the bike in place with the side stand but I would be leery of parking on a grade more than 5 degrees even with a properly adjusted parking brake.

    Adjust the screw until you feel a slight drag.
    I think you would get a better feel if you rode the bike a few miles to warm the fluid in the read end first.
    When cold that stuff is pretty thick.
    And if you're careful about turning off the parking brake you probably will never have to replace the pads.
