The 30mm cannon is a magnificent weapon system. So much so, the USAF said, let's build an airplane around it! The A-10 was born. Well, Honda said, this air filter is AWESOME! Let's build a motorcycle around it!!! And the 2018 Goldwing was born. LOL

I wasn't looking forward to doing the air filter the first time on my 2004, but with a patient methodical approach it was pretty straightforward. I can do it in less than an hour these days. Instead of making easier on the 2018+ Honda has made it worse. Hats off to you my friend. Pinch a cup cake tray from the kitchen for all the screws, bolts, rivets and fasteners to keep them grouped in order.

I think the flux capacitor was a tad on the difficult side to change, had to remove. Then comes the nano capacitance induction tubes (very fragile) then behind there is the termination points, should have just had doc do it. Charges to much $88 dollars per hour.

I love my 2018 DCT Tour, but the air filter replacement freaks me out. I want to do it myself, because I don't trust the kids at the dealership, but this is truly intimidating. I miss my old CB 750. It had the air box under the seat, held together with four Phillips-head screws. I could change the filter during my lunch break and still have time to eat a sandwich.

Did this same exercise on my DCT Airbag which adds other complexities. One recommendation that works well is to lay out all the Tupperware with the associated hardware in a clockwise pattern around the garage. Being a little anal here can save a lot of aggravation while speeding up reassembly when you reverse the process.

Being a DIY guy myself, I will get to do this very soon. I figure the dealer doesn't have any better way, or maybe not even more experience, so why pay to have it done. Just take your time and be careful as you did. You started out with just the glovebox to remove, so most of the work was done to that point, but good vid. I think while it's apart, looks like a good opportunity, so why not route some needed wires up for accessories. Thanks for the information.

I have been waiting to see what a job it is to remove that air filter. You would think that Honda would have a better design by this point. Or you don't have to tear the entire bike apart and destroy all the electronics just to get to an air filter. Great video Thanks man

I just bought a '21 DCT Tour. Obviously, I am not looking forward to replacing the air filter @ 16K !! That being said, my '15 BMW r1200RT is not a picnic to work on either. Nearly all modern bikes, that have a lot of plastic body work, are going to be much more difficult to work on. However, it is less of a hassle than the days of my Harley ownership where bolts were vibrating OFF the bike as I rode ! So, at least the Wing retains its fasteners ! Even my '12 650 V-Strom was a pain to work on (due to v-twin being crammed into the frame with very little clearance to access fasteners !). However, I am pretty mechanical, and overall like the experience of working on my bikes. And one last thought: If one does NOT want to do his own maintenance, and one thinks that Honda service is too expensive, then...DO NOT buy a Gold Wing. Stick to something simpler. Or...maybe motorcycles are not your "cup of tea" if you are averse to things mechanical. Also, having the right tools really helps. Make sure you buy yourself a good sent of T-handle hex, torx, and ball-end torx drivers. (I recommend Bondhus USA-made versions). These are extremely helpful in working on nearly any bike. Thanks for the fine video, and sharing !

We don't take off a lot of that bracketry. 1:54 Once the front snorkel is removed the air box lid and filter can slide out the left side from under the airbag/storage box. One tip I can give you if you do it this way, place a small dab of painters tape on each lid screw to hold them up out of the way as you slide the lid back in place. This will help protect the new filter from being snagged by one of the screws hanging down. When removing the lid we don't care if the screws drag on the old filter, right?

I wonder how many dealers "SAY" they replaced the filter but really don't. I want to see my bike tore down in the shop before I pay..LOL. Maintaining this bike is hard work. I do not remember what my shop estimated the cost to change the air filter on my 2015 F6B, but it was enough that I sold it. This is ridiculous surgery to replace an air filter, along with the cost. I assumed the egg heads at Honda would have designed a way to pull the old cartridge out and install a new one with some type of access panel...aren't the Japanese known for their ingenuity. Bikes have gotten way too complex. Do we actually need all this crap on a Bike ? Doesn’t it make it more car-like ? I have a Harley 02 Softail. The Air filter is a 10 minute Job. Just a slight rant but I do love my 2021 Goldwing.

You’re a champ for getting that deep into the bike. Thanks for showing us all how much is involved. I think I will enjoy the 16000 miles I have to put on my bike and not think about getting into that mess. Just yet!

Jesus! I had the dealership replace my air cleaner for free while they were replacing a broken body panel seat clip under warranty. Looks like I made the right call!

Honda needs to invent a slide in/out filter holder. That is crazy!!

I would imagine Honda does this on purpose so that 95% of the people decide to take it to the dealer and spend all the money to have it replaced....

I’ve put a bunch of spare cash aside for this…my 2018 is going in next spring for the air filter, new coolant, Hondaline driving lights and Homelink….I did the air filter on my previous 2006 and it took me 4 hours….don’t have the patience to do it on this one….ride safe….

Great video. Curious as to how many hours in total it took to dissassemble and reassemble everything. In any event, you made it look possible!

Great video. It has me thinking about selling my 2018, 6-speed. Dealer bills shop labor at $175/hour. Pulling "tupperware" and keeping track of screws adds up quickly. Thank you.

That is truly absurd that a major Car, boat motor, M/C etc etc etc this was the best they had to offer. I personally would have gone with an Indian had I known this BS

I was hoping they made this easier on new gen. All of honda's innovation & they leave this a disaster.

Yeah, I'll be saving my money for the dealer I guess. Holy Crap! if you do this take pictures with your phone along the way so you know how it came apart. Also, take a piece of cardboard and stick the bolts in the cardboard labeling each set as you go along.

I was going to ask how long the process took but after watching, I will not do this. One word of caution: remove that robot vacuum before it sucks up all your parts !!!

I am needing an oil change and I am out of my current area. Talking with the dealership service here in Northern VA, the service manager says they only have one guy who works on GW since they are so complicated. For an oil change.... Now consider this or even worse - major engine repairs.

Can't imagine this being needed before 30K miles. Traxxion has a video with one that has over 60K. Wouldn't go that far ..😁
