    God I've always felt so fucking bad for Donna. There've been companions who died on the job, and companions who've had to go back to their normal lives, but poor Donna Noble basically had to go through both at the same time. She didn't originally come with the Doctor because she was attracted to him, she came because she was so intensely curios and excited about the possibilities beyond the stars, all she ever really wanted was a good bit of adventure. And through her travels, she learned so much about herself. She found her compassion, her confidence, and she finally found true value in her own existence which she hadn't been able to believe for so long. Shane's description that he came to like her more and more over time is I think exactly the crux of her character. You start to like her more and more because she becomes more and more of a good person as she travels and learns with the Doctor.
    And then... Gone. The whole thing, taken away from her, not because she fucked up but because she unknowingly sacrificed herself to save all of creation. All those things she learned, about herself and about life, wiped from her mind forever, reducing her back to the trite, insecure individual, burying herself in mundane gossip and sassiness to avoid thinking about the bigger questions that the Doctor helped her tackle. Fuck. She'll always be my favorite.

      The only plus side is that all of that WAS Donna... sure, the Doctor helped bring it out of her, but SHE was the one who put in the effort to become the person she became. One would like to think that with more encouragement from her mother and certainly a firmer involvement with Wilf (with him not backing off when the mother shouts), she still has the ability to become a better person than she was....
      With life, there's hope.

      I agree, I mean her situation is rectified a little over the next few specials. Yet, not remembering her brilliant experiences makes her fate even worse than that of Amy and Billie - one of whom was trapped in time, the other who finished her days as a glorified puddle spirit!

      Preach. I maintain that Donna was the most screwed-over companion in modern Who. How DARE you not be into the Doctor romantically! Now lose all your character growth and go back to the miserable person you were before he met you! It is worse than death, because even she would've chosen to die as the person she became with him. But he took the choice away from her.

    24:12 I agree with Shane, I always saw it as the Tardis shutting the door. As Shane said it is alive and it doesn't always take the Doctor to where he wants to go but where he needs to be. I took it as the Tardis knew that Donna had to stay inside to save the universe.
    Aaron does a good job of guiding the conversation so that Shane didn't get drown out.

    Am I the only one so sad for the Doctor? He gets to see a duplicate of himself kiss the woman he's pined for and been so sad over all through Martha's run? Like he sat there and watched as what he wished he could have was unattainable. Like he just wants to break open and tell her, but he can't. This episode is sad on top of sad on top of sad, but my god is it so well written.

      @@priscamnguni6388 Nah, doctor was clearly heartbroken when he saw Rose kiss his clone. He tried to get away as fast as possible. Thats not how he left Martha.
      If Rose didn't end up in a different universe in the first place, he would try to stay with her as long as possible. He was deeply in love with her, and he was depressed over her ever since the Doomsday episode. Martha and Donna never filled that hole in his heart.
      But he chose to sacrifice his own happiness so she could be happy with his clone.

      If Ten had said it out loud, Rose never would have been able to go on with Ten.2. As it is, she gets the same man but they can grow old together. Ten.2 will combine Nine and Ten in some ways, as they mention in the commentary. He was born like Nine but has, from his point of view, experienced everything Nine has. I felt funny about this whole thing at the time, but I guess it does work out the best for Rose.

    To be fair, the Daleks didn't have Davros and Caan as prisoners in the basement, they were more like oddities. They respect Davros's role in their creation and Caan's prophecies enough to keep them alive, but they still ultimately view them as inferior discrepancies to the perfect Dalek existence. So it's not completely weird to have the control panel down there with them.
    I always figured Davros was basically like their retired parent or something. Like, if your dad is in a tough spot in his old age and he needs to move in with you unexpectedly, of course you're going to give him a place to live and be nice to him and all. But at the same time, you're still gonna be kinda awkward about it lol.

  • @jaydenyugi9034

    Donna’s exit is heartbreaking and probably one of the most emotional exits to come from Doctor Who. She developed so much from her adventures and grew as a person and became so much more fleshed out thanks to The Doctor. The fact that all that character development is stripped away and she’s reverted back to the person she was before the Doctor is very upsetting and heartbreaking. This finale is easily the best Doctor Who episodes in my opinion. Such a strong two parter that marks as a great round up and send off for all the first four seasons. Many great moments such as Martha expressing surprise that The Doctor found Rose; Rose acknowledging how good Martha was: the interaction with Mickey; Jack; Sarah Jane and Jackie. Icing on the cake is when Davros tells The Doctor the real truth in the fact that he transforms humans into weapons and soldiers etc. The scene between Sarah Jane and Davros was also good! My favourite part is everyone flying the Tardis together. Such a beautifully composed and paced scene which really warms my heart every time and it’s genuinely tragic that we will never see The Doctor’s family reunite together again. That moment will always have a special place in my hand and it’s one of the reasons why I love the RTD era. So much heart; fun: great developed characters and wonderful interactions. Only 5 more episodes left for Blind Wave! Oh boy! I can already feel the emotions rising! :D

    donna is easily my favorite companion. i love the platonic relationship between her and the doctor and how they are truly best friends and the episode turn left just shows how much of a posotive impact she had on his life and vice versa comparing how she was in her first episode compared to her last. the way she went out forgetting the doctor and her experiences is easily the most heart retching scene too cathrine tate really sells how devastated donna is in losing this life love her as a companion one of the best there is!

    Again love this! It is a bit frustrating how you view Donna as some loud mouth whose a bit funny whilst completely overlooking her biggest and best personality trait her compassion. I mean that was her whole character, she's like his conscious; telling the Doctor "that's enough," to saving someone in Pompeii, hell willing to share the burden of Pompeii, the understanding of the Ood that even Rose lacked, heart to heart with Agatha Christie, helping the Doctor accept Jenny so on and so forth. Sorry I'm biased because she is my favorite so I really can't help myself, that said I did love hearing your thoughts though. I mean as some one who didn't think much of Rose seeing your enthusiasm for her made me appreciate her more if only for the joy she gave you. Anyways I love how you reacted to Mickey and Wilf, yes they deserve recognition! I mean the way you all smiled when Mickey and Jack hugged filled me with such joy.

    I loved Tennant while he was the doctor but Matt Smith quickly became my favorite. Donna was one of my favorite companions and seeing her go is always so sad to me. Cause you know how happy traveling with the Doctor made her. It filled an empty space in her life. Loosing all those memories is the worst thing that could happen.

I know the back half of season 7 is a mess, and that season 6 was a bit of a frustration, but I could say the same about seasons 2-4 which are also highly inconsistent but charming in their own way. I just love Matt Smith's approach on Doctor Who! Also, we still have Tennant's finale left, and he is brilliant in it.

    • @npe9483
      @npe9483 6 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      I think it's much more childish to leap on any Moffat thread with tireless complaints. Also - how big crossover punch ups with tin boxes known as Daleks is sophisticated while complex, interwoven thematically resonant stories about the consequences of time is childish is a mystery to me.

    • @Raverenz06
      @Raverenz06 6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      I actually liked how Moffat’s seasons told an overall story. It made episodes seem more connected. They were more random during Tennant’s tenure. Sure they had bad wolf, but that was more of a brief sentence mentioned every few episodes.

    • @npe9483
      @npe9483 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I agree, and i love how thematically focused it became. The Doctor's main enemy tended to be ideas such as time, fate or destiny rather than tin boxes saying 'Exterminate' . Sure it wasn't perfect, but considering how bad the first half of this season was, I don't see why Moffat gets so much criticism.

    Great intro and good reaction. But I wish you guys had time to include a reaction to the Doctor recalling all those he's lost in his adventures, whose deaths he felt responsible for. An emotional moment in the episode, one of many. Donna's departure is high on my list. It's been years since I first watched this episode and what happened to her still affects me. And it still hurts to watch Wilfred cry. He was right about Donna. She was the best version of herself around the Doctor.

    One thing to note about the daleks is that the show doesn't actually have exclusive rights to use them. The dalek copyright is held by Terry Nation, the writer who created them. The show is contractually obliged to keep featuring the daleks, otherwise they'll lose their rights to feature them all together. Although Steven Moffat has stated that they bring the daleks back for creative reasons, not due to any obligation, but even if it _is_ true that they bring them back due to "creative choice", it isn't like they have much of a choice in this matter, regardless.

    Donna got seriously short-changed in her series.
    Rose and Martha both had a full series of Doctor-Companion [each with one Doctor-Comanion-light episode, so 12 each].
    But not Donna.
    She shared 3 episodes with Martha, one she was only in as bookends; she did have one Doctor-light episode, but she shared that with Rose, and the last two episodes she shared with everyone.
    She was in a Christmas special, but Rose had one too.
    There were only six Doctor-Companion episodes in this series.
    So we only had six episodes to fall in love with Donna.

    This "regeneration" is the pay-off of a McGuffin troughout Torchwood.
    The ACTUAL regeneration is foreshadowed in The Sarah Jane Adventures AND (technically) Torchwood : COE.

    • @noobsunrider5843
      @noobsunrider5843 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's thing that drives the plot until it's opened/activated/found/gathered/unveiled, after which, it drives the plot forwards in another way. (At least that's what I always thought it was.) Examples of MacGuffins : The Infinity Stones, the Zeo crystals from Power Rangers (the series), the little box Fury gave Coulson at the end of season 1.

    • @noobsunrider5843
      @noobsunrider5843 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      What I mean is that it's an "Easter Egg" of sort and a subplot throughout Torchwood Season 1 (my mistake for not being specific) with Jack being strangely protective of this random hand in a jar, until it turns out to be the Doctor's hand and TARDIS locator of some kind (kick-starting the Series 3 ending crossover but not making it a MacGuffin yet). This all culminated when this random hand in a jar turned out to be a receptacle for regenerative energy and grows a second Doctor (no, not THAT one) along with creating the Doctor-Donna.
      It started as a paper-weight in the Torchwood hub and eventually turned into the Doctor that ends up with Rose.

    • @noobsunrider5843
      @noobsunrider5843 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Anyway, I was just pointing out that this regeneration is the payoff of an Easter Egg from Torchwood and that the proper regeneration will be the payoff of a foreshadowing from SJA.
      Just pointing out how both of the 10th Doctor's regeneration are set up discretely in spin-offs.

    Bernard Cribbins (Wilf, Donna's granddad) really is fantastic. In Britian he has been like a national treasure for over 50 years now, as actor, novelty pop star and children's tv presenter. Amongst a lot else he was one of the stars of the 1965 movie Dalek - Invasion Earth: 2150, which has Peter Cushing as the Doctor. It is ABSOLUTELY NOT CANON, but pretty fun anyway. And that paint on the eyestalk business really is the sort of thing that used to work on Daleks in the 60s, so it wasn't a completely stupid idea.
