I found the footage entertaining. Always enjoy seeing deer on camera in the woods, and as usual it makes me want to get back out there myself. The broadhead commentary and conversation provides several points for everyone to consider for their own purposes. After all that I guess we all end up using what works best for us. I've been using rage hypos the past three years with 100% success in retrieving the deer I've shot. Some pass through, some have not. Some shots left a less than expected blood trail, but we did find them. I'd think everyone could agree that retrieving your deer would be the most important factor. The alternative can happen to any hunter using any type of broadhead. Best of luck out there!

Congratulations Tom! on your successful deer hunt. I enjoy watching your video. I shot mine using a 70lb Hoyt Alfa Tech 3D bow at ground level distance 50 ft. The Mussy broadhead sank about 10 inches deep close to the deer's rib and it took more than 1 hour to locate the animal. Our sinario was very much different from yours, Ours is a dense tropical jungle and moving around wasn't easy. Since we were ill equipped and the deer was big , more than 500 lbs I guess, me and my 2 friends with me could only take 2 hind legs and the head portion out of the jungle to load in the car boot parked some distance away. The rest we leave behind for tigers to eat. Thank you for sharing your video and good luck for 2022.

I bought a original tree lounge from Bob and Margaret. Walked 2 miles back on game land. A place where I thought I'd never see anyone else. Left around tree for the next weekend hunt. Got to my tree hour before daylight. My stand was gone. Man I was pissed. 300 bucks. Gone.
I shot a 180 lb. 8point with a 100 gr. Rage mechanical. Shot thru the right shoulder the Rage turned down thru the base of his neck cutting large arterie. He made it about 75 yards. I shoot a Ten Point Titan Extreme. Great crossbow! I really like your videos. A lot of good info! Thanks!

Good topic. I have put a rage through the shoulder blade and opposite leg of a nice old buck and one through the hip bone of a doe but then I have lost two bucks with rages. One, I think did hit the shoulder blade and deflect. Would love to know what makes the difference. Have both results with hypodermic and traditional rages
That doe went 200 yards because it was a single lunge hit. The arrow went in so high on the right it mostly missed the right lunge at best just hit the top of it but took out the left lunge. Not a bad shot just a bad shot angle being that she was directly below him there wasn't really any better angle.

I use the Grave Digger Hybrids and it flies pretty true with my 58ish lb pse compound.
I have a centerpoint mercenary whisper 390 that i use with both rage hypo. And rage chisel tips, have not had problems with either one. Will say the blood trail has been fantastic on both. Did not get the same accuracy with fixed blades, so I guess in my opinion it's going to be whatever works best for your setup, but I will stick with rage for now. Keep up the great videos, looking 👀forward to the spring turkey hunts.😀
We also use Rage with our crossbows because we aren’t very good at tuning crossbows. Rage broadheads will fly great out of an imperfect setup. With our verticals bows, compound and trad, we prefer a fixed blade broadhead because we can tune our bows perfect. A perfectly tuned archery device, bow or crossbow, can shoot most fixed blade broadheads perfectly. And a fixed blade will have much less risk of failure if you hit a shoulder blade or something. Anyway.. all that to say that , YES, we shoot RAGE from our crossbows also! Stay tuned for spring turkey hunts coming up on our channel. I have a good one that will be airing this week!
Totally agree on using a fixed blade in lower draw weight bows or if there is a chance of any bone. I shoot Rage for the blood trail benefit, but am VERY careful on shot angle.

I have a Barnett stalker 380 and last year I was using 100 grain Muzzy Trocar and no blood trail other than the impact and this year im using the big Muzzy 100 grain Broadhead and I shot at a doe from roughly 20 yards and I don’t know for the life of me know if she ducked or if Broadhead made it lift up or whatever but it hit right behind her shoulder and right across the top of her back and all I got was just a little blood and maybe a little skin but she was not severely hurt but there was a small red spot on her back were it grazed her. A friend of mine is trying to get me to go rage for the reason you talked about and saying they fly more like a field tip . What would you suggest ? Kinda leaning towards Rage myself . I shoot rage with an excalibur and have even shot threw the shoulder blade at 32 yards , it sounded like a bass ball bat smacking a tree and the deer dropped in it's tracks. It passed threw the deer and came out threw the ribs high on the other side. I use to shoot fixed blades but the blood trail was not great compared to rage.

Lost a nice 2.5 yr old buck using Rage, hit lung but blade failed to open. I use Wac'em fixed blades now. Best broadheads ever, no issues finding deer if hit heart/lung
How do you know what you hit if you didn't recover your deer? You dont. Our eyes often see what we want to see. Rages don't fail to open without some error by the shooter.
Jim tuber, I know I hit lung. My fletching were sticking out from his side. It was only a 20 yrd shot & I shoot brite yellow/red fletchings. This was 20 yrs ago w/ those early design Rage w/ rubber band retainer
WIBOWHunter unless you did something to lock it in place. There is no way that it couldn’t have opened. The only problem with the old ones was that they would open in your quiver. My son and I have killed around 100 deer with rage heads. And never had one fail. I think when a lot of people lose deer with mechanical heads. Either because of poor shots or poor tracking skills. They immediately claim that the head failed. Not saying that’s what happened in your case.
That buck probably lost his eye from fighting another buck. They do get injured sometimes, sometimes they even get killed.

I starting using fixed too lost too many deer using the mechanicals.sure they work well for some people but they don’t always open all the way and can miss vitals
Chad Klaren I’ve tried many mechanicals and they’ve killed deer just bent way too often to spend 60$for I’d rather just stick to my slick tricks and they rarely bend
bow speed and not hitting bone but i don't care what your shooting if hit the heart or both lungs or liver they are dead ive used both and killed with both fixed and mechanical when i hunt with my compound i use fixed my crossbow mechancal high KE the entry wound is unreal looks like you shot it with a telephone pole

Great video. I learned a lot about broad heads. I own a crossbow and you mentioned tuning in your bow. How do you tune in a CenterPoint XR175? I am new to this and want to be accurate.
Not much you can do with a crossbow tuning wise. Get it sighted in for your field tips, then shoot some fixed blade broadheads. If the broadheads hit in the spot as your field tip bolts then don’t change a thing.
If the broadheads hit in a different spot than your field tips, try shooting a mechanical like a Rage. They will got the target in the same spot as your field tips.
Stingers for my trad, dead ringers for my compound. Never had any problems out of either of them and they are easy on the wallet.
I just went to carbons and mechanical grim reaper broadheads 100gr this year I was useing aluminum arrows with 2blade 145gr I seem to have straighter arrow flight better penetration in target lot less drop that is probly do to 145gr to 100gr havnt shot a deer yet hope I've made right choice thx for information.
My advice is to bare shaft tune any time you make a change
Shot placement is key to get a blood trail. Both broadheads are awesome. But you can get different blood trails on each shot with the same broadhead. It's been a long time argument amongst archery hunters but I all ways say shoot what ever you feel the most comfortable with.

Spot on! Shot a huge bodied 8 pt w rage extreme 3 yrs ago. Smack in midd shoulder. Could tell needed 1-2” more penetration. Gave him 4 hrs after watching him take off w 3” wide hole but blood wasn’t great. Kicked him up 7 hrs later (got lucky locating him but he wasn’t inj bad). Saw him in trail cams rest of the season n still haunts me. Prob Any fixed woulda got that extra 1.5-2” n he’d b on wall n dn my gullet. Thinkin abt the magnus replaceable 2 blade Wish was more discussion abt 100 vs 125 gr. Seems like most use 100. Bet if I used 125 , he MAY have taken a dirt nap

I'm a bow hunter since way back than I have been bow hunting for 40 years last year I got a blind spot on my rigth eye n I couldn't see my pins so I bought a crossbow center point sniper 370 n this year I shot my first deer with it I use mechanical broadheads rage 100 gr.2 inch cut I rotated the in certs to match the spin of the bolt thanks keep it up later from deerslayer
U r correct about a mechanical head going through soft tissue & the advantage of a big hole. I prefer 2 shoot a setup through paper & then do walk back tuning from 10 yards to 40 or so yards. Then I use a high quality, easy 2 resharpen low surface area head like a 3 blade CNC machined Bishop out of a chunk of tool steel like a Holy Trinity. It also helps 2 have over 15% FOC balance on that arrow 2 deliver true passthrough thru bone. U will have 2 stack a broadhead target in front of a bag or second broadhead target since that 525+ grain arrow will shoot right through even a new broadhead target with all that momentum on a well tuned bow @ only 65 lbs.

I too have shot both types of broadheads. Only deer I ever lost was with a mechanical. Hence the word mechanical. They have to work to do their job. I believe it's more about shot placement than type of head. Good luck and shoot straight.

"Mechanical error" I've heard that said so many times. I use fixed broadheads because bow hunting is challenging enough with out a possible

in wind conditions a lower profile mechanical would be affected less than a fixed blade with a larger profile
I know this was last season but this guy did a hell of a job. If nobody has ever tried to bow hunt and film it yourself? Then you should try it cause it is hard as hell. Been in this guy's situation before and yes I'm a muzzy trocar user. But I think I'll get me 3 of those rage heads after this. Good vid 👍

I successfully dropped a 5 pt today but couple weeks ago I losta buck with a swackers broad head blood trail sucked but I been hearing crows on neighbor property
i should also mention alot of my shots on the deer with my crossbow has been ground level ((also why it might take them a bit to bleed)) but guys is right solid advice i i had a compound bow ((antique got it when i was 14 im 37 now)) that has low KE ((kenetic energy)) i looked it up you need 26ke ((foo t pounds)) to make a leathal wound on a deer ant 40 ke to garentee the arrow comes ut the other end ((pass through shot)) to find your KE if you can get a chronograph reading of your arrow speed and get the weight of your arrow and shoot 3-5 and just do some rounding you can put it into a KE calculatior on line....the archery shop i use to have here had a chrono and shooting range we tried 5 different arrows on my bow my speeds was 140-200 depending on arrow and arrow weight was like 300-500 grains basicly my bow for some reason loved heavy arrows but my ke was in the upper 30s some one convinced me to use a piston action mechanical and i shot a deer and notice it didnt go all the way through and the entrance was barely the size of a field tip ((i found this out by shooting a target)) i had barely and blood and after 60 yards tracking i lost all blood......i spent 2 days looking for the animal with no luck.....him saying low poundage bows go fix blade instead of mechanical is very sound advice ......i used a 3 blade fix blade got a pass through shot i was a lil to wide and nailed it square in the liver ((found that out after i gut it)) however it did soo much dammage and dammage deer died in seconds and i saw were it fell they do make some low KE mechancials but you got to get them specificly dont use a mechanical unless your bow is pushing 50+ ke
Its always funny some one to knock mechanical broad heads. I've shot both fixed and mechanical and settled on the swhacker 2 inch broadhead.It gives me a 1+ inch entrance and 2+ exit . So far haven't lost a deer yet. The 1 1/2 inch fixed just didn't give me the blood trail like the same on this video.

I had penetration issues with Rage Hyperdermics out of my HTR Nocam at 61lbs and went with more energy with a Vertix but the Nocam tunes so well no need for expandables
The buck was shot more horizontal. Therefore the entry and exits wounds were higher on both sides. This means there is much more sealed body cavity to contain the blood loss before the blood starts pushing out in earnest. On the doe, the shot was vertical. Meaning there was a high entry wound and a very low exit wound, which allowed the blood to drain from the body cavity almost instantly. This is why there was not a great deal of blood trail on the buck until well into the track. He was bleeding badly. The blood just stayed in the body longer.
When comparing, keep in mind the doe was straight down and buck was 40 plus yards so hole through side compaired to hole on bottom
Couldn't agree with you more. I shoot trad so it's zwikey's...but my son shot a big 8 right behind the shoulder with Rage 3 blade. Broadhead caught on a rib and exited brisket. 400 yds and a tracking dog later he was recovered. Don't think it would have happened with fixed blade!

I think that’s his knuckles cracking haha he doesn’t use a release. I kinda wish I didn’t have to use one actually. Just one less thing to worry about

What are you talking about? Watch his draw n the first buck, bow arm is nowhere near the bow or string. The noise is totally coming from the arrow being drawn. Scraping the whole way back.
I have shot Wasp Jak-Hammer mechanical broadheads for years in both compound and crossbows. Never had a single failure. One shot a big doe that was about 150 pounds. She took a step as released the arrow. With a 62# compound the broadheads went through both shoulders breaking bones and never even bent a blade. My processor argued with me that I had shot the deer with a rifle. Wouldn't shoot a coyote with a Rage simply because why shoot two blades when you can shoot three on a superior broadheads with fewer moving parts. Give em a try you will be hooked after your first bloodtrail.
At 10:30, I felt that, double lunged my biggest buck ever about 8 years ago and the blood dramatically slowed down. But 20 yards later he was dead on the ground.
I’ve had deer that left little to no blood but were dead on their feet. I’ve had deer the were bleeding heavy and after hours of tracking we never found.

Angled shots, mechanicals take away from my arrow penetration since i shoot 54lbs so i shy away from mechanicals. Always get a pass through with fixed so i have 2 holes leaking. Finding them after the shot is key. Not ooo look at all that blood. The doe had the arrow still in her just after the shot. If she was gut shot she would not lay down. Just my . 02

I used on my old Barnett Predator at ibo 375 fps. I use a muzzy with an all blade Boss try it. It's unreal blood trail due to the boss broadhead blowing out tissue. The hole looks like a shotgun slug from a .410.

Fix blades on a 20" bolt flying in excess of 400 FPS tend to act like wings and deflect your shots
And as far as Fixed Blade vs Rage goes I can only break down for you my experiences. I have used all kinds of Rage Broadheads literally every single kind Rage has made since the Original Rage. 9 Bucks in about a decade all were shot with a Rage. All 9 Bucks I DID NOT GET 1 SINGLE PASS THROUGH but every single one of those 9 bucks all died and i found every single buck with 70 to 80 yards from the original shot and almost always watch or hear the Buck fall down. I try to only shoot Pope N Young Bucks so these aren't tiny bucks. So last year I finally felt like I wanted a FULL PASS THROUGH and I went to the best fixed Broad head for penetration I could find on the market. I shot my Pope N Young at 20-25 yards with a fixed blade. Since I was so use to seeing the Rage hit since its so big I didn't see the broad head entry wound when he ran and furthermore he ran 60 yards stopped turned around then walked away so I thought I MISSED him some how. 15 mins later while still thinking I some how missed a Male Coyote comes running right to me at 15 yards. My other arrow was loaded with a Rage Hyperdermic and for the first time in a decade I got a full pass through with a Rage BUT it was on a coyote not a deer. The coyote ran 30 yards as I watched him drop from the Rage. Right after I shot the coyote I realized maybe I hit the Buck and that is why the Male Coyote came sprinting in. So I got got the coyote and then went to the spot of the shot on the buck. To my surprise I hit the Buck with a FULL PASS THROUGH. There was only LIGHT BLOOD for 60 yards then completely stopped. I waited 4 hours then went back and still couldn't find any more blood. My instinct told me to walk to creek and 250 yards away from the last drop of Blood he was dead right on the other side of the creek on my neighbors property. So my story after 10 seasons of hunting with Rage then switching to fixed I'am now switching back to Rage. It was nice to get pass through BUT as I found out a PASS THROUGH doesn't mean better blood, quicker find & going down in eye sight of you. So as much as I wanted a PASS THROUGH I knew what I had to do. I believe if I used a Rage on that Buck he would of fell within 70 yards of the shot instead of 310 yards away with 250 yards of ZERO BLOOD! The fixed head has VERY SMALL ENTRY & EXIT holes then a Rage Does which is why there was no blood at all for so long. I imagine this is how & why many people LOSE their deer thinking they didn't kill the deer. If he wasn't as big as he was I honestly don't know if I would of went above & beyond to find him like I did. I'm so thankful it worked out but I learned a lesson and that lesson was I don't want to go through that again and that I'm now fine with a Rage not PASSING THROUGH because the entry hole is so freaking big not only can you clearly see how & where you hit him but they usually can't take that much damage and fall within 70 yards. This is my experience and Im about as hardcore as it gets. I know everyone is different so if you have something your 100% confident with like a fixed blade you love because you know it will get the job done for you then by all means use what works for you. I'm simply sharing my 10 year test of broad heads and you have to choose what is more important full pass through or nailing them with a giant 2 inch hole. I also want to add that now I carry 1 fixed blade arrow with me with my Rage. Why you ask? Well 2 years ago at 1030 I got down and as soon as I got down about 80-90 yards away a big 10 was chasing a doe. I did my magic with the grunt & bleat and got the doe NOT THE BUCK to come within 10 yards with the buck following her. Yes a doe will come to the bleat when being chased just to be around other deer. Once at 10 yards remember I was on the ground not in my stand I just got out of so my rage was knocked and ready and I thought I had a clear shot but right before the arrow got to him the Rage hit a branch and OPENED before reaching the Buck so once it hit the Buck it only stuck in him by an Inch as I watched him run off with my arrow touching the ground on WHAT WOULD OF BEEN A PERFECT SHOT. So I leanred a lesson you need both because I BELIEVE I'm not 100% positive but I BELIEVE if I used a fixed blade there I would of for sure killed that buck because it would of went straight through that little branch I didn't see. The branch was just big enough to open the Rage but not stop it from where it was going and as we all know once the Rage opens all energy is lost. My Advice carry both for both situations. I learned my lesson the hard way.

"Wienies"?...if I needed more than three arrows on a hunt, I'd feel like I needed to go practice...A BUNCH MORE! For a bad shot, which everyone has some time or another, there is the third arrow. I NEVER have two bad shots in the same hunt, as I never take a questionable shot...like that straight down shot. If she didn't move out into a decent lane, she would live another day. I don't like a maimed animal. The thought of them suffering for hours, just to ultimately be consumed alive by coyotes kind-of bothers me. Just my opinion. I fill my regular season tags, AND reduction tags every year...3 arrows at a time. Been working for 35 + years...if that makes me a wienie, so be it bro. Hunt-on.

Yeah I have three FMJ’s with broad heads in my quiver. I don’t ever plan on needing more. Only thing I may add would be maybe one with a small game tip for the occasional annoying squirrel or partridge
Shot rage my entire hunting years. Even blasted through the dreaded scapula. I have shot deer back to front walking away (entered by hip stopped opposite shoulder) and it traveled the whole length of the deer.
I think the difference is I shoot a full #70 Mathews switchback. Shot one recently and it stopped on the opposite shoulder, but the entrance side I always make it through.
These are the older 2” cut so not as much power needed to push them and shoot a heavy arrow so inertia helps me.
Several years ago I bought a Mathews XLR8 #70 and it is very difficult to tune it to a fixed blade. The rage is what I shoot out of it and I have busted through both shoulder blades with it!
I tried rage a few times both times it bent the broad head I’ve been using slick tricks since I started and except the occasional try’s.
Rage hypodermics no better broadhead on the market!!!

The swacher 100 grain head is better as far as a mechanical broadhead on a crossbow.
1 fixed blade broadhead that I shot several times from my crossbow and it hit exactly where the field point did was the Rocket Ultimate Steel broadhead. They don't make them anymore, but you can find them. I care not to use a Rage broadhead, my 2 cents worth. Thanks
I shot a doe a while back with a Rage it hit the shoulder and bounced back out my thunderhead fixed blades never did that. I still use Rage though.
Yea man stay away from that shoulder. Also the newer rages are better. Hypodermics, trypans, and NC

@@davidbrowder4396 This happened around 7 years ago the Rage had a more blunt tip where Thunderhead had a real pointy one. Arrow weight is fine it was 25 yards wit 70lb bow. However the first deer I ever shot at was 30 yrds with a 12 gauge slug I found the ball and socket on the ground but never found the deer. I try to stay away from the shoulder because they're so tough.
i used the Rage hypo this year with my 10 point crossbow im just telling you all i blew a hole thru a big 10 point buck the entry hole was big enough to put your fist thru it ran maybe 30 yrds leaking lakes of blood wouldn't even call it tracking love those broad heads
Thanks for sharing! Those rages sure can leave a big hole that’s for sure! Just keep clear of that shoulder. I shot my buck this year with a rage from a crossbow as well!

Follow up on your animal! I love that. Watching these guys back out overnight only to find the deer didn’t even make it 100 yards and was destroyed by coyotes is sickening to me. All those people care about is the rack.

Blood trails are not predictable. The buck was shot at 40 yards, entrance and exit on the sides. The doe had a drain plug hole in the belly with entrance through the top of her back. Lung it and the pump station was still pumping which is key. It was said that the buck was heart shot so the pump station was out of order. Shoot that buck the same way as that doe and the blood trail would have been just as good. Doubt the mechanical would have passed through that buck at 40 yards.

Shot placement and angle
Why do you want to haul ten arrows to the woods with you? I use a 3 arrow quiver and have never needed more than 2.
TOM shoots squirrels, turkeys, logs, and we have been in crazy situations in spot and stalk scenarios where we needed more arrows for a deer. Also TOM would kill 3 does or more if given the chance. He needs arrows trust me.
6 bucks in a row since I switched to rage. The furthest went 40yds. Finger shooter . Best to aim at back of lungs ribs are wider all pass through. Remember we are using an arrow not bullet we are not heart shooting. Fix blades are better shot toward back of ribs also. Just my opinion 45 yes of hunting. Thank God my shoulder is still good don't need a release or cross bow shoot 20yds or less. Have a good season folks
I myself like both but it isn’t what broad head you use it is shot placement I’m a true believer in that. Yeah sure you get more blood. That is my opinion. Congrats on a nice buck and doe. Stay safe and in the tree

Rage makes up for slightly off shots.And Rages cause major blood lose , Both was good shots, I am surprised you didn't hit the does spin . Two for the freezer. And like you said, With a crossbow, Mechanicals are the best, And some Rages open 2 inches, I am not a fan of the 3 blade Rages... I use Rage Chisel points

Wow you do know the inside of the shoulder is paper thin right and the outline of the shoulder is thick and no broadhead will penetrate that so basically take the best shot and not a dumb shot and there will be no issue

Yes, on baby deer and small does. Try hunting bigger mature bucks and it ain't happening. Been there done that. Nothing beats a fixed blade. No contest.
