Another Australian viewer here backing up on the 'how to eat Vegemite' bandwagon. If you've grown up with it as we have, you can indeed spread on Vegemite reasonably thick. HOWEVER. It's important to put on margarine or butter first to offset the bitterness because it's made from yeast extract, which is a byproduct of making beer. Make the first spread generous and smear on the vegemite lightly, rather like you did with the tortilla. Doing it on toast is superb because obviously the butter melts BUT so too does the vegemite a bit and evens out the taste. I have it on SAO biscuits, which are square shaped crackers. It takes time to get the mix right, but it's DELICIOUS.
Vegemite is a byproduct of beer fermentation. I, too, tried it and quickly realized it was an acquired taste. The only other Australian thing I ever tried was a "Cherry Ripe" candy (because I would hear it referenced in movies occasionally). It's been in production since 1924 (one of their country's oldest mass-produced treats). It's basically like a Mounds bar (sweetened coconut, dark chocolate) with an additional layer of cherry jam. It's delicious (and are easily attainable via Amazon)!!! 🥥 🍒 🍫
Also, Stubbies are/were a particular style of men's work shorts... they were very short, just covering the necessaries... if you can find an old picture of Paul Hogan from about the 70s (the Paul Hogan show era, or when he was fresh off the bridge) it was his most common fashion mode - worn with footy socks and a blue and white checked shirt (with the sleeves ripped out) and daggy old work boots... it was definitely a look... ;)

Australian chocolate is generally sweeter than in other countries, it gets so hot here that they need to put extra preservatives in the chocolate to stop it from melting in our hot climate and so they add in extra sugar to mask the taste. Also you usually use a LOT of butter with vegemite if you're trying it for the first time haha. It's more salty that bitter but yes, takes some getting used to.

You should know that Fantales and Minties are two of our traditional cinema snacks. They're chewy and quiet, and a bag will usually last the whole movie. Fantales also always have actor biographies on them, which are read while waiting for the movie to start (and between movies/shorts in the Golden Age of the Silver Screen). Aside from popcorn and choc tops, the other two traditional cinema snacks are Jaffas and Maltesers. Maltesers are chocolate coated malt balls. Jaffas are orange coated chocolate balls. A lot of people are like you and don't like the chocolate/orange mix, so it's traditional to roll Jaffas down the aisle while waiting for the movie to start. Some will even tell you that it's traditional to buy a bag of Maltesers to eat and a bag of Jaffas to roll.

Normally with things like Vegemite and marmite etc... if you put it on bread there is normally butter on the bread which offsets the strong bitter flavour just a bit... But I will say, you are one of the first Americans I have seen try it and actually spread it thinly... everyone else just smothers it on like Nutella... which, even I as a big fan of Vegemite and Marmite, would never do... As a side note: Vegemite and Marmite are used to flavour a LOT of foods, like beef and chicken flavour chips for example... if you see anything with "Yeast extract" as a flavouring... that is basically marmite/vegemite
The biscuit took the sub-continent by storm. In 2008, they began importing Tim Tams to America through an association with Pepperidge Farm. So now, you are highly likely to find them in many grocery stores nationwide.
fun factt: fantales are actually called such because each piece's wrapper has written on it movie trivia. They're not only tasty, they teach you about movieees.
the white bread should be toasted well beforehand and you should slather on a good amount of real butter so it melts with the toast, then spread a very thin layer of vegemite on top.... i promise you its really nice with butter, thats how we eat them in australia
I love vegemite, but the first time I had it I put waaaay too much and I didn’t try it again for about 12 years. Now I will often have it on buttered toast for breakfast.
For a bit of fun, I would love to see a reaction vid (of your choosing). In a black n white, silent movie style. I find your expressions and looks to camera brilliant and words are not required. x
This looks like so much fun. My ex husband and I tried vegemite that my Aussie SIL prepared, very thinly spread on buttered toast. GAWP, worst thing I've ever eaten. We were trying to be good little Southerners and not say anything, we were dying.
I'm sure someone has already said this. But you are officially Australian because your first move was to put the burger rings on your fingers. There is another iconic Aussie snack that will make you do the same thing. I hope somebody sends you some 'cause they are delicious.
Enjoyed your reaction to our Aussie snacked… Tim Tams are the best, yes our chocolate here is different to the US. Vegemite is best on warm toast with butter, with a very small amount. I’m the only one in my family who eats it, my children can’t get past the small. Except my Labrador dog, but he’ll eat anything 😀
I know I said I was going to watch this a few days ago, but I got busy. Glad you enjoyed most of them, and not having seen any comments from Aussies on this topic, we don't say shrimp here, we call them prawns. Paul Hogan says shrimp because it was an ad campaign for the American audience. If you use the word prawn to paraphrase that line any Aussie in hearing distance will immediately treat you like family. I lost a tooth to a mintie when I was a kid. They're dangerous. Check the Fantale wrappers too for some light reading. Both are cinema staples. I'm disappointed that you didn't enjoy the vegemite, but not surprised. I'm one of those freaks that spreads it on thick. If you add some slices of cheddar on top and put it under the grill/broiler/toaster/salamander (I dont know what you call it, heat source on top just above the food, like 2 inches max) to melt it then you have a delicious salty snack. But as you don't like it then you can either prank your friends with it or use it as an alternative to beef stock in your cooking. Great in stews.
Vegemite needs lotsa butter. Definitely bread - fresh white bread or toast. Tim Tams are great though huh! Try that Tim Tam slam with Red Merlot Wine instead of milk. Kind of like red forest cake. So good!
ooohhhh no no no no no! you must... MUST have toast with butter and vegemite. ITs the butter and the vegemite together that make it work. (did you know in Australia you can get cheese slices that are vegemite on one side?)
Your "Crikey" was actually pretty good. Fantales and Minties are best eaten in the cinema. You suck on them first to soften them up and then slowly chew. Every Australian eats burger rings the way you did. You would fit in so well over here. Kudos for your attempt at Vegemite. You might need to try it a few times to get used to the flavour. Thanks to Amber.

fun factt: fantales are actually called such because each piece's wrapper has written on it movie trivia. They're not only tasty, they teach you about movieees.
no no no that is EXACTLY what we do with Burger Rings too (from New Zealand)
Thanks for always keeping me entertained! I could watch this all day lol. Also note to self MUST FIND BURGER RINGS.
Vegemite or Marmite is good on toast with cheese under baked beans/spaghetti.
They're savory foods.
Tim Tams are amazing! You can buy Tim Tams at World Market, here in the States.
Love the way you left the planet for a while on the kangaroo snack.
the white bread should be toasted well beforehand and you should slather on a good amount of real butter so it melts with the toast, then spread a very thin layer of vegemite on top.... i promise you its really nice with butter, thats how we eat them in australia
I discovered a few months back that we get Tim tams in Canada, my new favourite! I like the chocolate caramel ones best.✌️🇨🇦
Both Tim Tams, and Burger Rings are available on Amazon. Enjoy.
I love vegemite, but the first time I had it I put waaaay too much and I didn’t try it again for about 12 years. Now I will often have it on buttered toast for breakfast.
Ashleigh is my spirit animal.
Cost plus carries Tim tams so does Vons and Albertsons. (owned by Kroger, so if you have a Kroger they might have them) Amazon carries them too.
My fave video of the whole week. Class, Amber!
You can buy Timtams at Walmart. Candy aisle. (Or use the app. 😅🤷♀️)
Crocodile Dundee is my fave Australian movie and i think it's important to know what a knife actually is
oh my the vegemite bit had me like 😂😂😂😂😂😂
For a bit of fun, I would love to see a reaction vid (of your choosing). In a black n white, silent movie style. I find your expressions and looks to camera brilliant and words are not required. x
I definitely am considering sending you British snacks.
Haha brilliant stuff.
And not even the 10yr olds in australia are safe from an Ashleigh "that's what she said" joke!
I want to know if hubbin tried anything and if so what he liked?
You can buy Tim Tams at Target and Kroger’s. They only have 3 flavors though.
This looks like so much fun. My ex husband and I tried vegemite that my Aussie SIL prepared, very thinly spread on buttered toast. GAWP, worst thing I've ever eaten. We were trying to be good little Southerners and not say anything, we were dying.
Tim Tams? Aha, Ashley, But they do sell them in America. At least they do at King Soopers, here in Denver.
Love watching non Australian people try Vegemite. No one does it right lol. Toast spread with butter then a slithering of Vegemite.
Canada has Tim Tams too! But I first had them in NZ and Tim Tam slams are delicious! Especially with hot chocolate :)
Tim Tams are very much available in grocery stores in the US.
OMG you had me laughing. great job!! now i want a snack.
So good!
Ashleigh and I both had the same reaction to Vegemite!
Beans is like "Follow your dreams...I did and look at me...BEEFCAKE!!!"
i know this was back in may, but i just found this channel. Did you happen to get hubbin to try the vegemite?
This video made me so happy. Cheers from this Aussie.
You CAN get Tim Tams in the US, I've seen them in Target..
Road Warrior is a good Aussie movie to start with. If you wanna go the horror route you could try Wolf Creak but you might find it a bit rough.
ooohhhh no no no no no! you must... MUST have toast with butter and vegemite. ITs the butter and the vegemite together that make it work. (did you know in Australia you can get cheese slices that are vegemite on one side?)
You're so fun Ashleigh!
Forget to read the movie facts on the wrappers of the fantails, Vegemite best on toast with butter, tim tams ,so many flavours, yup on the chocolate, Vegemite chuckle chuckle heh heh..
