@Kale-gn2ixyou know there's literally thousands of different takes on 'fairies', right? All across the world? Theres no one correct 'depiction?' Honestly i always thought disneys design of tinkerbell was too simplistic and her personality was ugly. Minnie looked absolutely divine. Go read a book other than Peter Pan, although I think you never read it and you just watched the movies. your obvious racist undertones already tell me your brain is atrophied beyond reading anything worth reading.

At 31 years old back in the 70s no doctor ever would have thought that she had a breast cancer. That was for older women. And probably the number one reason it was not caught in time to save this poor woman's life. So sad.

This reminds me of Stevie ray Vaughan, the famous Texas blues super star who passed away from a tragic helicopter crash. He once wrote a song for one of his close friends who unexpectedly passed away, in that song there is a like that says “thank you for the love you passed our way” that same quote is on his grave. It was her husband, a songwriter, who insisted that this song be released as a single. I had the album, but I moved on-I mean I REALLY moved on to traveling to places that you wouldn’t hear any American or ‘Western’ music. So I was heartbroken to hear that she died so insanely young, 31, from breast cancer. What a loss.💔

+Kimberly Griffin I think whistle register (like what riperton and mariah carey does) is supposed to be effortless. Other techniques to reach high notes like belting (which produces more powerful voice, like celine dion does) requires more effort.

On this day in history (April 5, 1975), Minnie Riperton’s single “Lovin’ You” became a number 1 hit on Billboard’s pop singles chart and went on to achieved the same status in over 20 countries around the world. She was married to songwriter and music producer Richard Rudolph and they had two children: music engineer Marc Rudolph and actress/comedienne Maya Rudolph.
Minnie Riperton was born Minnie Julia Riperton on November 8th 1947, in Chicago, Illinois. She was the youngest of eight children, born to Daniel and Thelma Riperton. She studied classical music as a child and developed a five-octave vocal range and originally planned to become an opera singer.
She studied music, drama, and dance at Chicago’s Lincoln Center received operatic vocal training from Marion Jeffery. Riperton began singing as a session singer at the Chess Records studio when she was just a teenager. She provided backing vocals on records by legendary artist Bo Diddley, Etta James, Muddy Waters and Chuck Berry.
At age 16, Riperton signed her first professional contract and began singing with an all-girl group named “The Gems” on the Chess label. After “The Gems”, she joined the psychedelic rock group “The Rotary Connection”. During this time Riperton met songwriter and producer Richard Rudolph. They married in 1969 and had a son, Marc Rudolph. Together they worked on Riperton’s first solo album, 1969’s “Come to My Garden”. In 1972 she Riperton she gave birth to her daughter Maya Rudolph.
Eventually, Riperton and her family moved to Los Angeles where she to become a member of Stevie Wonder‘s backing group, “Wonderlove”. After touring with Wonder, she returned to the studio to work on her second solo album, “Perfect Angel” which contained the international pop hit “Lovin’ You”. As the story is told, “Lovin’ You” was originally written as a lullaby for her then two-year-old daughter, Maya.
In January 1976, Riperton was diagnosed with breast cancer and, in April, she underwent a radical mastectomy. At the time of diagnosis, cancer had metastasized and she was given about six months to live. She was one of the first celebrities to go public with her breast cancer diagnosis but did not disclose she was terminally ill. Despite her prognosis she continued recording and touring.
Riperton became a spokesperson for the American Cancer Society in 1977. In 1978, she received the American Cancer Society’s Courage Award, which was presented to her at the White House by President Jimmy Carter. July 12, 1979, at age 31, Minnie Riperton succumbed to cancer in her husband’s arms while listening to a song written especially for her by her friend Steve Wonder.

My Dad was a Chess Records artist and songwriter (Maurice McAlister of The Radiants; he wrote their most popular song "Voice Your Choice", he wrote Etta James song "Only Time Will Tell" & Sugar Pie DeSanto "Soulful Dress" ). Minnie would sometimes do receptionist work in the office & watch after my Dad's oldest son. She autographed him a personal photo under her first recording name of Andrea Davis.) She's also in family photos of one of my Dad group members. Very cool to know that she would go on to be one of the best known voices of all time.

I had the honor & pleasure of seeing Ms. Riperton with George Benson in concert back in 1974(?) at the Mississippi River Festival on the campus of Southern Illinois University (SIU). 5th row! Me and a friend snuck backstage and got to meet GB. What a kind guy to stop and shake hands with two young kids--both of us guitarists who admired his beautiful playing, singing and performing. Honestly ... at the time I didn't know too much about MR ... but I sure did post-concert! At the end of the show they joined each other on stage for several songs. It was the stuff goosebumps are made of. Great memories.

I was 15 when this song was released back in 1975, so I'm very familiar with it for the past nearly 50 years. I recently bought the Midnight Special Soul 10 DVD set and this exact performance is included. I watched it on my big screen TV last night and had to hold back tears.
I look at her pretty face, hear her stunningly beautiful voice and think of young Maya Rudolph, who lost her beautiful mom just weeks before she turned 7. Minnie was a brave beautiful soul who was taken away way too soon. She was only 31. She kept on going nearly to the end, touring and sharing her wonderful voice with audiences until she couldn't any longer.
    R.I.P. Minnie. Lovin' YOU ❤❤❤❤❤

Oh my, how insanely beautiful and how it's so 70s...!! So many singers after Minnie Riperton came trying to sing in the whistle tone but her one is uncontestable. In this live version especially, her voice is out of this world. Never heard the whistle range that is so beautifully sustained with vibrato, and with such subtle details and character. Sublime! Gone too soon.....

When I first heard this song, I wasn't aware of why she would sing in such a high pitch.. but after experiencing love for myself, I completely understand those passionate squeals. No, at least originally, it was a love song to a partner. Because, “making love with you is all I want to do,“ and “every time that we - oooh! - I‘m more in love with you.” I recognized that much when I used to listen to this song on the radio during its original airplay.

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is called the "whistle register". Ironically, the song for which Minnie is best known for doesn't adequately demonstrate it (she could also sing actual words and sustain in these ultra-high pitches). The woman was a treasure; her voice was one of those rarities that even the best popular artists today can't truly duplicate.
