In this performance her right arm was incapacitated due to lymphedema and she smiled, and sung like an angel. How strong she must have been, battling Breast cancer for 3 years and still doing shows. R.I.P angel
The “while we grow old” lyric is eerie and heartbreaking because while singing this song Minnie knew she would never live long enough to grow old. Cancer is an evil disease. RIP ❤️🕊️
she must have been in so much pain, not only with the thought of leaving her babies but simply knowing but not knowing when she was going to go… Love you Minnie, your voice has touched generations 🩷🩷🩷
I have just read her Wikipedia page which prompted me to seek out this particular performance. She had two children Marc and Maya Rudolph (actress Bridesmaids). When she originally wrote this song there is a part where she sings “Maya Maya” repeatedly. This was to distract her daughter when she was a child. But if you notice at 3 minutes in of this performance she sings “Maya Maya Ringo Ringo”. Ringo was her nickname for her son Marc. Because she knew that she didn’t have long to live and wanted to include ‘both’ her children. What a tear-jerker aye?… Well it’s certainly made me well up that’s for sure. Peace my fellow brothers and sisters! ✌🏻🫶🏻
Yes! She struggled, she didn't want to leave as well to leave her family, her sister being interviewed on Unsung, daughter Maya explained as well, her mother's life was short lived.
i think what really breaks my heart is when she calls her children's names at the end. there can't be anything more painful than knowing you are going to be leaving your children behind 💔
She left the song in their honor. Much respect for her. Talented and in the final stages of her life, yet she performed perhaps her best for fans & her children. Courageous & priceless
It's remarkable that this lady never had a vocal decline even as she was near death,in fact she sounds even better than the debut if thats even possible,God she was an angel.
Perfection in her voice and mood... I can only imagine how she felt in 1979, when treatment for cancer was much less advanced.. she sang this performance like a bird, literally. Much respect for the artist and the person. Its 337 am and im sitting here in awe.
I'm here just mesmerized by God's gift of her voice...its 3:55 am.... What a voice, what a special talent. We are blessed to have her in our hearts and memories. Oh, when she sings about Maya...tears.

Someone needs to take this recording and have it digitally remastered because it deserves to sound as great as Minnie's voice. And especially with the violins. It would be heaven!
There’s something very sadistic about this. What I mean is how in the world can a gifted angel like this be stricken with cancer and die at 31. Devastating.

It's taken me 2 full days to gather my thoughts...but July 12, 2019 marked FORTY YEARS, since the awful and inconceivable loss of this gorgeous and beautifully talented angel-a victim of breast cancer which metastasized. Even more fascinating is to know that actress/comedienne (and SNL alum)Maya Rudolph, is the only daughter of the incredible Minnie Riperton. Besides Maya, Minnie left behind her husband, the recording producer Richard Rudolph, and young son Marcus. Such sadness is so hard to put into words, the tragedy of losing Ripperton at just age 31. I find myself unable to comprehend what her life may have been, had her illness been attacked early on, with modern medicine and technology...Minni would have been just 71 years young today. RIP Minnie Ripperton(and condolences to Richard, Maya and Marcus Rudolph on what surely must have been a sad day for all "LOVIN", and undoubtedly, remembering Minnie).

She had a very special voice, and performed for as long as she could while battling breast cancer. She loved her children and husband. The song, “Back Down Memory Lane” is even more heartfelt.
I think you did not understand what I said. I did not say Minnie was the only. I said she is the greatest user of this Register as she is the only fully trained opera singer. Her use and ability supersedes all. Betty Write uses it only for novelty not actual singing in the way Minnie does. She had every normal technique a singer uses in head voice in this register, this can not be said for anyone else. Also You dont know Minnie if you think Betty has the strongest. Minnie used the technique of removing weight from notes to fit the song she did. Often her songs required light notes which is harder than the reverse she would make it sound almost non human. She also could throw all her weight into a note like Betty only could. Please dont ever disrespect the first Operatic R&B singer who is the greatest of them all @@TW-mg3ld
