According to the liner notes from Riperton's compilation album Petals, the melody for "Lovin' You" was created to be a distraction for her baby daughter (Maya Rudolph) so that Minnie and her husband Richard could hang out. Maya was in the studio with Riperton on the day it was recorded and Riperton can be heard singing her daughter's name at the end, but only in the unedited or album version. The song fades out early in the radio edit because the disc jockeys felt that the repeated "Maya" was being overdone and that it would be misunderstood as a religious chant.[12]

Minnie Julia Riperton Rudolph was an American soul singer and songwriter best known for her 1975 single "Lovin' You", her five-octave vocal range, and her use of the whistle register. Born in 1947, Riperton grew up in Chicago's Bronzeville neighborhood on the South Side.

She's so etheral **sighs** I get lost in her voice everytime and watching this I'm lost her beauty too!!
Real
ISN'T THAT ABSERLOUTLY STUNNING, GORGEOUS AND BEAUTIFUL 🥰. LIKE A SWEET LITTLE BLACK BIRD SINGING TO EVERYONE 😍.
God gave Minnie an amazing gift
Just found out why she sings "maya, maya, maya" at the end. Wow! Two such very talented people in one family. I miss Ms Riperton though, and that voice, that voice from heaven.
I’ve never heard another singer hit notes like that before
What a voice, what a song.
Minnie, you are immortal.
I Loved her Voice! She was Beautiful! Who can do that with their Voice!
Minnie voice is so beautiful!! For those of You who don't believe in GOD!!! ONLY HE HIMSELF COULD MAKE THIS MASTERPIECE OF A PERSON!!!
Minnie was so unique. Not just people, but dolphins loved Her too. No, I don't want to be disrespectful, because She deserves better than that. This song is a classic, so sadly tinged with the tragedy of Minnie's life. Always watch this video and celebrate what She gave us. Lot's of love to a real singer!
I miss the music from the 70's.
I use to love the Midnight Special with Wolfman Jack.
When music had no labels.
❤😊
this is the only song in the worldwide unique, her voice touch high sky whith the high sound, unforgettable tune now and then, timeless, good memories from the 70"s the best era. miami usa
She doesn’t need auto tune at all
No Autotune in 1975, my friend. She def didn’t need it…💯😊
그냥 천사강림이네....ㅠㅠ 딸 마야한테 부르는 노래라서 더 뭉클하다
No one can sing like her.
She is so underrated. Such a beautiful songbird. Her album Come to my Garden is also beautiful. If you haven't heard it in its entirety, you should.
Such a Beautiful Voice and a great singer that we lost to soon,RIP MINNIE........................
Had no idea this was Maya Rudolph’s mom nor Minnie’s tragic death from evil cancer at just 31, but have heard this song my whole life
I am a huge life long fan of Minnie.. from the 1st time I heard her sing...
Greetings from Mexico, I love what I am seeing on your profile. I apologize for jumping into your comment in such a way. I'm really looking forward to get to know you better. If you're comfortable with it, I'd love to talk somewhere outside the TH-cam comment section. and get to know each other a bit more intimately. What do you think?
Minnie Julia Riperton Rudolph was an American soul singer and songwriter best known for her 1975 single "Lovin' You", her five-octave vocal range, and her use of the whistle register. Born in 1947, Riperton grew up in Chicago's Bronzeville neighborhood on the South Side.
Don’t forget midnight special was always LIVE too amazing she sounds like beautiful songbird
Minnie is primarily remembered for this song which is a great shame as she had so many other great songs which to this day seem timeless. I think she was ahead of her time.
OMG..Her VOICE is INCREDIBLE..NO ONE COMES CLOSE... Not even Mariah..She sings EFFORTLESSLY here..no putting fingers in her ears. Just so much natural control. So playful, professional and sweet. I LOVE it...
This a reminder of my life with Sue, no longer with me. It always makes me weep for the past.
that whistle was so flawless. What a performance
Gorgeous music 🎼 gorgeous voice
People say: "Poor Minnie, she died at such a young age", etc. But, she lived more emotions in 31 years of living than most people in their 60s of 70s.........
So true.
Her spirit left this world on a high note
Wow. Not seen this live version before. A true songbird. God blessed talent. Incredible that almost 50 years on, my eyes still fill with tears when I listen to this. RIP Minnie.
Beautiful, pure singing and no creepy claw-like nails like today or anything else over the top. Miss those days!
I'm so blown away today knowing that I've been singing this song all my life and that much of the inspiration and who she is singing to is Maya Rudolph and it was a song to sing to her baby Maya to comfort her and love on her. How beautiful.
Her voice are full of love that cannot be found than a love from mother to her children. An unconditional love that everyone can feels.
Smiles, how are you doing?
NOBODY I Mean no one can hit that NOTE LIKE YOU MAMA💙🙏🏾💙 2024🎵🎶
