Hi Doug...Just wanted to say I loved the way you and Fencik played the game. To me the old school NFL football, without all the new rules and pre "global warming" as you stated in one of your interviews, the old school way of a focus on big hits is what the game is all about. I never knew Buddy Ryan named the 46 after you. I applaud your humbleness, but you deserve to take credit for that, you deserved it. In my opinion you were the hardest hitter in Bears history. The only harder hitter than you in all of NFL history was maybe Tatum and that is a big maybe. Thanks for playing the way you did as a real man, not the BS of the NFL today with players making tens of millions and complaining about everything and kneeling for the anthem. I wish you the best in life and it was such a pleasure to watch your old clips when America and the NFL was in a much better place.

Thomas, thanks for your kind words. It was a pleasure running into other people. After 4 joint replacements, I ran out of body parts. Too many concussions for 1 man.

@@dougplank9242 I'm only just getting turned on to what an absolute savage you were on the field sir.
You embodied the blue collar hard nosed origins of the Chicago Bears and their fan base.
Thank you for your sacrifice sir. You brought inspiration and entertainment to so many.

Too bad that wuss Tom Brady didn't play when you did. He would have pouted his way out of the league. The Touch Football Era of today's game, should have separate stat books.

Wow. Thanks for compliments. Loved hitting opposing players. I was trying to get something started. It finally came together in 1985 but I had retired. I hope I left a determination that would be the benchmark going forward on the defense!

My dad went to high school and played baseball with Doug Plank and was good friends with him and watched him play for Norwin High School in football he said he would just annihilate people he said he used to give himself concussions from hitting people so hard. He said he was the greatest all around natural athlete that he has ever seen he said he was cut and solid as hell and never picked up a weight in his life Doug Plank will always be a legend in my eyes

Many years later, here I am still a huge fan of #46 and I don't even care about pro football anymore. But how I do remember those years when Doug and Gary Fencik terrorized any opposing player who entered their defensive backfield. Doug Plank was and still is a giant in Bear folklore. Thanks for the memories Mr. Plank, including showing up at Oak Lawn's baseball field to entertain us goofy kids.

Doug, you should’ve been on that 85 Bears Team! You were the foundation of that team! Wowsa! What a heavy hitter you were. You are the EPITOME OF A CHICAGO BEARS PLAYER!❤

Thank you for the kind response. I had to battle my whole life at Ohio State and Bears. First day at Ohio State I tore a ligament and cartilage in right knee. Was a backup player until a Chicago scout saw me play for an injured player my senior year at Northwestern. Loved playing for Bears. Played aggressive since our pash rush and run defense was lacking. It was great getting Gary to play the other safety. I think we set the tone for playing defense in the NFL and especially Chicago!

Yeah, Man....I remember some of those. I mean, all my life The Bears had fun defense to watch right up until modern day. Doug Plank was something else !

So many of those years the Bears records sucked BUT you'd watch every week to watch Doug and Gary in the secondary. I remember a few time Doug losing his helmet when he'd make hits or the time he didn't know the game was over cause he had made so many hard hits during that game. Those where the days of smash mouth football. No one wanted to get into the secondary and get hit by Doug..............RIP Buddy!!

The fans need to advocate to get him on this Bears team as a DB assistant to mentor Amos and Jackson and finally get this man his long over due championship. Get it done Bears fans. Spread the word.

You sir are one of the all-time greats...I grew up watching you and the rest of the Bears in the late 70's and into the 80's. Watching you guys play was an inspiration to me and even though I wasn't very good I played in high school and tried to play in college. You guys played the best football and inspired many, many young men. Thank you for your excellence!

Kirk, Thank you for the kind words. It was a special opportunity to play for Ohio State and Chicago Bears. It was about inspiration every play. I would always go back to games my rookie year to try to match the energy, effort, and love of the game. Despite multiple joint replacements, I feel great and try to inspire people to do their best. Thank you.

You can argue the ‘85 Bears were not the greatest team ever or had the greatest defense though I think they were the best. But, no one legitimately say they were not the most fun team in NFL history. There had never been a football team with a cast of crazy, outrageous and entertaining players like the ‘85 Bears. The 1985 season was the most over-the-top in the NFL ever. Will never be repeated. Which is too bad.

I watched him play in high school ..not just football but basketball too. The first time I watched him was a jv game in basketball before the REAL game around 1969 or 70 at Norwin High School. Hell of an athlete. I graduated with his brother Robbie in 1972 who also had the Kamikaze attitude style of football...Unfortunately his brother wasn't as tall as him or there would have been 2 Norwin grads in Pro Football.

One "collision" in the NFL that I wished had happened is Doug Plank vs. Bo Jackson. End result- one of those players would have stopped playing in the NFL & stayed in MLB.

Most of those hits were head hunting cheap shots even back then. Late hits on the ground or out of bounds.

Just heard about him, was watching a 85 bears video. There is a video of him tackling the great Earl Campbell, it was an unbelievable hit. Campbell was no easy take down, but man the hit was insane.
