Do you agree that Walter Payton's 1977 season is the greatest season by running back back of all time? If not, who do you think had the best season by a RB?

@@jw9366 I don't blame Ditka for that. When the Bears scored their 46th point, it was still the 3rd quarter. Adding to that, the Pats were keying on Walter the whole game. There was one play near the goal line where Walter went right and 5 players went with him. IIRC, either McMahon or Suhey walked into the end zone to the left. I agree, though, it is sad that he didn't score.

He’s my favorite athlete of all time. I have an autographed picture of him, I’ll cherish it forever. When my mom sent me to the store for bread in the 70’s I would use the loaf as a football and ran home with it while using some of Payton’s moves. Sometimes I fumbled it and then picked it back up and ran it in for a touchdown. Let’s just say that my mom wasn’t happy when I returned home with a smashed up loaf of bread.

He is the only celebrity I've ever cried at during his death or funeral. There wasn't a bad thing to be said about him. Hard work, great family man, incredible talent, and one of the most tireless advocates for various charities in the Chicago area.

A loser will just pout and lay on the ground if he got hit or slow play it if he didn't. A winner will haul his tail after the ball carrier and make an honest attempt to make the tackle. Sanders had more agility and speed, but Payton had more power and he fought for every yard. 1970's Bears and 1990's Lions were both bad teams overall, but my money is on the Bears being worse. Payton had to carry the team for 7 or 8 years before other talented players came along to help them win the Superbowl in '85.

Payton imo is the greatest football player that ever lived. He played on piss poor teams with inept QB's his first 8-9 seasons and didn't have a great lineman until Covert came into his own in 84'. The guy had jo weaknesses as a back. He had tremendous hands, incredible power, superb lateral movement and escapability, could leap over the top, and was the best RB blocker by a landslide in the history of the game. Let's not forget he played with pathetic quarterbacks. If he had played with anyone decent his 1st 8 yrs he probably would have had another 30 receptions a year and 30 more td's for his career. The guy is a fking legend and is sorely missed. The heart of a lion and no one, and I mean no one, could have done what he did in 77' with that horseshit team.

It's easy to throw numbers out, but if you're going to do so, put them in context. Walter Payton didn't have a Pro Bowl teammate on offense his FIRST NINE YEARS IN THE NFL! That is literally the definition of a one man offense. No other great back had such a lack of talent surrounding them that long. Not Dickerson, not OJ, not Barry Sanders, no one. Not even close. We're not just talking about SKILL POSITION, but actual OFFENSIVE LINEMEN! People like to compare Barry Sanders to Emmitt Smith. Barry Sanders had Lomas Brown and Kevin Glover. Walter had literally no elite skill position players, no great offensive linemen, and the best QB of his first seven years was arguably Mike Phipps. MIKE PHIPPS!!! What he did that year against teams with zero reason to respect anyone else on the Bears offense was insane.

    • @realg5276
      @realg5276 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Misguided assumption. If those guys weren't in the Pro Bowl does that mean they weren't good lineman? There's no way he ran for all those yards and those guys were blocking well for him. We'd stop throwing these guys under the bus they did the dirty work they did block for him, they blocked well, all the great runners got good blocking.

Barry didn't need so called skilled players to help him out. He created his own openings. There is a reason Barry has so many runs in the negative and it's because his offensive line was never as good as folks like you like to claim it was. Walter was great, a pure power runner with guts and every other attribute you wish for in a running back but Barry Sanders just stood out to me above Walter. NOBODY could stop and go and be at full speed within 2 steps like Barry could. Barry was never gonna smash it down your throat at a goal line but Walter surely could. @@lloydkline3265 I agree totally. I love Walter Peyton. Earl Campbell too, though I don't think he's quite as good. All I said was put them in today's league where players are bigger, stronger and faster than 99% of players in the 70s and 80s, they would both be average at best. I don't mean that as a put down, just factual.

@Kube Dog - I would have to disagree. The play has never been sloppier than today... fundamentals out the window. Defensive backfields are pretty horrible across the board.
Defense can’t breathe in the QB anymore and simple college spread offenses work today because the average player’s FB IQ is laughably low.

Excellent video - thanks for uploading. As a Canadian kid born in the 60s the Bears (NFC, Pittsburg AFC) were one of my two favourite American football clubs, mainly because of this man - Walter Payton. He was my one of my heroes. From 13-23 I was able to watch close to half of their games on cable TV in Canada, and I’ve never forgotten how I would feel when he was given the ball … knowing that absolutely anything could happen. Sweetness was truly the greatest (with Barry Saunders a close second).

He was at the entrance waiting for his limo. I collected his football cards as a kid then seeing him was really cool. Very Nice guy!

I had to share this on this video. Walter Payton is the only RB in NFL history to lead the league in all 5 major rushing categories and win all 4 major accolades in a single season:
    1977
    Most carries
    Most total rushing yards
    Most total rushing TDs
    Most yards per carry
    Most yards per game
    MVP
    Offensive Player of the Year
    1st Team All Pro
    Pro bowl selection
He also got the most carries per game, most total yards from scrimmage, most rushing & receiving TDs, Pro Bowl MVP and NFL Man of the Year for good measure.
Not too mention, he swept the MVPs with Associated Press, UPI, PFWA, NEA, and Sporting News Player of the Year.
The greatest season by a RB ever.

3:16 proves that Walter Payton was, and I believe will always be the greatest running back ever to play in the NFL. He played outside in terrible elements without any all pro offensive lineman, his quarterbacks were abysmal, the surface at Soldier Field is like getting tackled on cement, he was the only focal point for opposing defenses, his head coaches sucked, except for Ditka. If Emmett Smith and Walter Payton switched teams, Walter would have had every NFL running back record and probably three or four Super Bowl rings. And unlike today’s little baby, soft pampered running backs, he never came out for a rest. And I mean never.

I've always been torn on who the greatest RB of all time is. Sanders or Payton? Emmitt is a legend no doubt but it's very convenient to have the best O-line in history opening lanes for you. Not to mention a hall of fame QB and WR to compliment each other. Comparing the teams Smith had to the ones barry/Walter had isn't even a fair comparison in the first place. My opinion on it won't change for that matter

This guy doinked countless women , I worked at 34rs , and his home , he'd pick out women.....literally countless...... and have them escorted up to his
" office " upstairs for his activities .
And hate to break it to you , the guy was on roids during his playing days . Lots .
Immediately after he retired he shrunk like flower , but hey , his acne finally went away .
Hence the internal organ damage that led to his demise.

They put their damn face mask under your chin and lifted you up a half a foot in the air and slammed you to the ground. And there was no flag. The real DAMN NFL. Not this soft ass shit we see today.
