    Buddy Ryan's 46 Defense was named after Plank who would walk up and play a LB spot. Fencik replaced Plank at SS later on.

      Thank you for the kind response. I had to battle my whole life at Ohio State and Bears. First day at Ohio State I tore a ligament and cartilage in right knee. Was a backup player until a Chicago scout saw me play for an injured player my senior year at Northwestern. Loved playing for Bears. Played aggressive since our pash rush and run defense was lacking. It was great getting Gary to play the other safety. I think we set the tone for playing defense in the NFL and especially Chicago!

      It’s not a defender’s responsibility to ensure an opposing player can defend himself. That’s the offensive players concern. The defenders job is to prevent any forward advance of the football by the offense. That’s it and that’s all.

    You can argue the ‘85 Bears were not the greatest team ever or had the greatest defense though I think they were the best. But, no one legitimately say they were not the most fun team in NFL history. There had never been a football team with a cast of crazy, outrageous and entertaining players like the ‘85 Bears. The 1985 season was the most over-the-top in the NFL ever. Will never be repeated. Which is too bad.

      There is always a story behind the story. Please read my recent post on that play. I made a sacrifice to play that night with the assistance of pain killers. I was not a dirty player. Gary Fencik and I always had the fewest penalties on our team. I could have said "I do not want to play tonight because of my broken ribs."

    • @dougplank9242
      @dougplank9242 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I played with 4 broken ribs that night. I was injected before the game and at half time to reduce the pain. I could lower my helmet to initiate the hit but could not use my arms to tackle. I hit another Buc receiver earlier using only my helmet. Now you know the rest of the story.

    I remember that hit like it was yesterday! Great football! Fencik said when he was a rookie once the games got out of reach he and PLANK use to spend the entire 4th quarter seeing who could KN0CK 0UT the most opposing players. I was in grade school and always patterned my game after Doug Plank. As kids playing football in vacant lot's we never said : we were going to tackle anybody. We always said: " we gone PLANK ah muh fucker"!!! & That's just what we did! We used to lay each other 0UT!

      Hell we played like that when i was in high school. The quarterback came fown the line on the option running the wishbone they got hit whether they had the ball or not.lol. and we were taught to put our facemask in their chest wrap up and lift up. Hopefully the running back had their head down or could have taken a shot in the chin. I am glad that now they are teaching a different way to tackle. But some of the targeting calls or unsportsmanlike calls like the one against vonn bell in the super bowl are ridiculous. He used his forearms with the hit and not his helmet the shot wasn't to the head but kupp's chest sorry it hurt but really was legal. It would be interesting to watch these guys play like they used to in the 70sand 80s. Lol. Would they be as good. I don't know. They are definitely stronger and football is all they really have to do unlike earlier years were they had jobs in the off season. This is bob not tammy. Lol.

    I watched him play in high school ..not just football but basketball too. The first time I watched him was a jv game in basketball before the REAL game around 1969 or 70 at Norwin High School. Hell of an athlete. I graduated with his brother Robbie in 1972 who also had the Kamikaze attitude style of football...Unfortunately his brother wasn't as tall as him or there would have been 2 Norwin grads in Pro Football.
