I was fortunate to live the Cardiac Cards experience as a young teenager. Dobler, Dan Dierdorf, Jim Hart, Mel Gray and so many others who made Sundays fun. They were never a championship team but the St Louis fans loved them.

Fun fact: Conrad Dobler once kicked Merlin Olsen in the head during a football game in the early 70s. Five years after Merlin Olsen retired, he starred as the title character in Father Murphy, a short lived NBC series in the early 80s and in one episode there was a cemetery scene where there was a shot of a headstone behind Olsen's character. The name on the headstone, Conrad Dobler.

I was a Cowboys fan in the 70's and I hated Dobler. Later, I moved to Kansas City. Dobler had a radio show for a while and he was one of the best I'd heard. I really like the guy now. The shame is that rookies coming out of college can make more in one game than he made in an entire season. Now he's paying for the beating he took. But he's a helluva man. Today I respect him.
That's what made the Lite commercials great. They'd take something the player, coach or celebrity was known for and just let them be themselves. Dobler with his tactics was great as an instigator and causing chaos and disruption.

Love these vintage clips. Football was a different game back then. It’s crazy that Dobler was listed as 6’3” 250 and was a starting lineman. That is the size of a linebacker in today’s NFL.
I was a Cards fan since the '50s and loved the way Dobler brought it each and every game. Got to move to St. Louis from Tennessee and finally see him play in person. He was the man...

6 TV channels were better than the 500 we have now. it made you really appreciate what you were watching with no distractions.. Especially Monday Night Football on those cool fall nights and at half time as a kid going out and tossing the football in the back yard.. I sincerely feel sorry for kids nowadays
During the time that Conrad Dobler played for the Cardinals the offensive line they had was crackerjack. They weren't called the "Cardiac Cardinals" for nothing. Don Coryell was the coach during that era. Wherever Don Coryell went, he produced winners. The problem with the Cardinals and still is to a certain extent is Bill Bidwill. They used to call him "Dollar" Bill Bidwill for a reason. Now that his son has taken over operations, things are quite a bit different and the Cardinals are actually winning (for a change).
I remember a clip of Dobler blocking two guys one in each hand and another one was coming around the outside, he promptly stuck his leg out and tripped the third guy!

In a Cardinals/Eagles game one photo showed him jamming a fist in Manny Sistrunk's facemask. In the caption Dobler remarked that he was just checking to see if Sistrunk remembered to brush his teeth before kickoff.
A time when teeth were all over the field, unnecessary roughness was only called if you had a weapon of tried to actually murder someone and no one looked for the ref to throw a flag. When men played the game.
He actually has pretty severe dementia. But he's in pretty decent shape for being so big and is pretty sharp for not being able to Remember anything past 60 seconds ago lol.
Love it! Wish we had more guys like Conrad in the NFL these days, what I mean by this is I wish the organization wanted guys with Conrad's play style in the modern NFL.

Merlin Olson saying what he said about Conrad Dobler may or may not be true. I don't know. But I can tell you that as an offensive lineman you do not want your man getting to the QB. If it means holding your man, you hold him if necessary. You do what you have to do and need to do (illegal or not)to keep him from getting to the QB or the running back. Either you do that if necessary or you will find yourself sitting on the bench or being cut. The line coach WILL find someone to do the job.

I use to have his poster on my wall as a young boy. This guy once bit a ref over a call he didn't agree with. I miss the football from the 70's.

NO! The Raiders O-Line back in the 70's had Hall Of Famers Jim Otto, Art Shell and Gene Upshaw, Dobler was lacking in skills and talent to play on that team! Dobler was a DIRTY player!

I went to grade school with his son. We used to play football in the Nobler's backyard in Chesterfield , MO.
That was back when every player was nasty. They fought for their jobs everyday. Nowadays a player has hurt feelings and they're out for the week.
Can only imagine the locker rooms fights... sheez the avg salary in 1970-1975 was around what 7500-10k their medical bills now are enormous

One of my best friends played offense line in this same Era for the Cleveland Browns 9 years. He got in fights preseason in practice almost every day.

Merlin Olson saying what he said about Conrad Dobler may or may not be true. I don't know. But I can tell you that as an offensive lineman you do not want your man getting to the QB. If it means holding your man, you hold him if necessary. You do what you have to do and need to do (illegal or not)to keep him from getting to the QB or the running back. Either you do that if necessary or you will find yourself sitting on the bench or being cut. The line coach WILL find someone to do the job.

Back when football was football, played by men. I grew up listening to the Cardiac Cardinals and Dobler, Dierdorf, Hart... They never won the Super Bowl for St Louis, but they were usually exciting.

On one episode of Merlon Olson's show Father Murphy, the characters were walking by a graveyard. Upon ine if the tombstones was inscribed the name Dobler. My father got the biggest chuckle out of that.

my Bone Daddy the original Sportsphile was at Super Bowl XV in New Orleans in 1981....and while partying at Lucky Pierre's....the true "House of the Rising Sun" in the Crescent City....when Tatum and Fred "The Hammer" Williamson came into the place....as BD sent the Boys from Oakland a complimentary bottle of Dom Perignon and two of Lucky's finest to enjoy to their hardest desire....and Da Raiders returned the favor with 40 yard line tickets....as BD calls Tatum one of the toughest characters he has ever met.
That's when Football was FOOTBALL 💪👍 he was a pretty good player. He was the kid who would throw the second and last punch in the fight in the playground and get caught by the teachers. That's all 🤣 lol!!!

I think Conrad Dobler used to be called "master of the cheap shot" but that was in an era where the game was played far differently and Conrad was a very popular guy.
I loved Conrad him and Merlin Olsen and Randy White would fight football was football the players handle it. LMAO loved it.

My favorite O-lineman in the 70’s , some things were questionable yes . But does anyone think D Linemen are freaking angels ? Doubler was just giving them a taste of their own medicine .
