Very helpful video and extremely well made, thank you doc! Makes me wanna get my cholesterol checked. One question: Is there any additional benefit to taking more than 2g Omega 3 acids per day?

Im glad you like it, Sven.
Most people dont know this, but there are 11 kinds of omega 3 fatty acids. Of those, three are the most important, namely ALA, DHA and EPA.
Our Western diet is already high in ALA, as it is found in a lot of plants and vegetable oils. EPA and DHA are however only found in fatty fish (salmon, mackerel, sardines). As we dont eat enough fatty fish, supplementation is necessary. Some ALA can be converted into EPA and DHA but this process is inefficient (numbers ranging from 0,5-20%, big differences from person to person)
As with most supplements, one size does not fit all. This means if you want to be thorough, you need to check your omega 3 levels (specifically your EPA/DHA) to finetune the appropriate dose for your body. Without bloodwork you just don't know how well your body absorbs omega 3 fatty acids.
Thas why I recommend getting a HS-Omega 3 Index (blood test) three months after supplementing with a starting dose of 2g EPA+DHA and re-adjust your dose according to the results. The test measures your EPA and DHA in your red blood cells membrane and is highly representative for the rest of your body's organs and tissues. Ideal levels should be between 8-11%.
According to European and American guidelines, up to 5g of EPA+DHA seem to be safe. Higher doses pose the risk of running into blood thinning issues and excessive bleeding. If you have any planned surgery, tell your doctor about your omega 3 supplementation.
      I hope this helps, Michael

Dr. Hoffman, This was a very informative video that I think will be very helpful. I had a question for you. When you post your activity levels, are those per week? Such as 4 hours of boxing per week and at least 4 hours of lifting weights per week? Thank you!

Thank you David for your nice comment. I am sorry if I didnt not express this specifically. Yes, these activity levels are meant per week. I have two boxing sessions per week which each last two hours, three times a week I go to the gym and twice a week I do zone 2 cardio. The light bike riding is my main way to get around the city and to work. I don't really count it as exercise. I hope this helps. Michael

No need to be concerned Melitta😄 I just want to raise awareness, as unfortunately we don't "feel" high cholesterol. Thanks for watching!!
