- Thank you ITV for this interview! This interview is from a piece called "The Story of the Costume Dramas" Affairs of the Heart. This is a recent interview with Richard Armitage and Daniela Denby-Ashe talking about filming North & South made by the BBC. I wish they had put something like this on DVD, but I am glad they did this recently! sigh
Sorry the copy isn't that great but it was the best I could do! Just wanted to share it with you Richard/North & South fans like me! LOL

I think it's so sweet when Thornton says: "I daren't believe that such a woman could care for me" in part 2. Hellooo? Probably every woman who has seen North and South cares for you deeply :O
They just don't write love stories like this anymore. Movies are just so explicit now that I think the romance is gone. This just goes to show you that if you have a good core story you don't need all the other stuff.

What I love about miniseries like this one and the Ehle/Firth "Pride & Prejudice" is that they take the time to develop complex characters and fraught relationships that couldn't ever work in a 2-hour movie. Smart viewers (like all of us) are willing to invest the time in a well-thought-out, well-paced, beautifully acted romance such as this. Thank God for the BBC!

What a pleasure for fans to hear the actors say how much they enjoyed shooting that iconic scene. The production was spot on with acting, direction, writing and cinematography. It was just beautifully done all around. Rivals BBC's Pride & Prejudice.
Richard Armitage just knowns what the female audience wants to hear!
OMG , I can listen to him whole day. He has this amazing voice, what an actor, I can never forget his "Mr Thornton" my most fav character, series and couple, gosh these two are amazing, what chemistry. they literally lived those characters. and the last scene was epic, never seen romantic kiss like theirs.. touched my heart. It was the most romantic scene ever.
I love this interview. Richard and Daniela are just so fitting for Mr. Thornton and Margaret Hale. And I loved his comment "It still makes me tingle." Haha, then why don't they just get together in reality, that would be cool ^^ he is so occupied being in love with her throughout the series, I almost wonder that he didn't fall for her in reality. They would be so cute together ^^

Hi ladies. Sorry to say Daniela has bn partnered and has a child since a few years after this interview and n&s. Richard is still single, he was engaged to a co-star from the crucible for a few yrs back in the late 20teens but it didn't work out for him
@@kayleighdixon5200 It is quite hard to believe that he likes men too. I mean the relationship with Lee Pace. Or is it a rumour? I of course adore him as an actor whether he likes men or women. :)

The best romantic drama of all time!!! Replaced Pride and Prejudice (Firth/Ehle version) and Jane Eyre (Stephens/Wilson version) as soon as I saw this one. I have watched it over and over and over. Richard Armitage is amazing!

Even though this interview looks like it was recorded not long after they finished N&S, it wouldn't surprise me at all if it STILL made him tingle, even to this day. Hell, after 10 years it still makes ME tingle!!! If only that could happen in real life!!!

I didn't see this interview until now because it doesn't have North and South" in the title. It's one of the few moments I have had in my life watching tv where my heart/insides actually hurt while watching the final train station scene. That is the power of Richard Armitage.

I loved Daniela's performance in North and South. So sensitive and sweet. And Margret is the real heroine of this piece (as much as I love Thornton). If comparisons to Pride and Prejudice must be made, I think that Margret is the Darcy in this Novel. She makes the journey of overthrowing her prejudice about "tradesmen" about who is a gentleman and what is noble. And she finds true love in the end.

Few months ago I just found North and South through books and the 1974 and the 2004 BBC drama adaptation. I feel the love story remind me how eternal love encourage people to act based on their heart. I enjoy the story and keep reading and watching it. Thank you for uploading the interview.
The way he smiles subtly when he talks about the "repulsion" between the two characters, on-screen, leads me to believe that this man might've had a crush on Daniela, off-screen.

I suspect he's had crushes on many of his female costars but he seems so focused on his career and so shy and sweet that he hasn't had a relationship with them. I have heard the rumors regarding his sexuality and I don't believe them to be valid. I think he and Lee Pace are just good friends. But I don't want to pry or speculate into his private life. It's none of our business. But I doubt he is gay as he has expressed an interest in having a wife and family and seems to be drawn to women. Not that it matters or has any bearing on his work. He's a splendid actor and seems to be a lovely person. I don't know the truth. Who does? Just my opinion.

If you look at Richard's body of work before he did this, I mean look at Lee in Cold Feet and Paul in Between the Sheets, he was basically cast a a Himbo, THIS is where he was finally given a chance to show that he had so much talent that nobody had even attempted to tap into yet.

wow daniela looks soooooooo different as a blond as opposed to brunette. as a blond, she looks wild, energetic & a little bit sassy whereas as a brunette she appears to be graceful, calm & sophisticated. wow what difference hair color can make. but she's always an incredibly beautiful girl, in every hair color.

Both are wonderful actors. I loved this movie and it's story line. Oh, and yes she is lucky to have kissed Mr. Armitage. :)
I love North and South so much!! It's so underrated, it should be ranked up there with Pride and Prejudice and all the greats.

I have the DVD's I watch it over and over again, love it. The only disappointment was that the end should have switched from the train to her walking down the aisle toward him with his over possessive mother showing her full approval. But have to imagine it every time.
I am not very fond of her modern look. I love her in North and South. She looks so beautiful. When seeing pictures of her now and from her other works she looks so different. I have never watched her other works.

+ろさ It's the hair, I think. The brown hair looked more natural and really set off her striking blue eyes. The blonde looks unnatural, in my opinion, and makes her look drab. Just goes to show, not everyone looks better as a blonde!
I think she had contacts as her eyes were blue in the movie and brown with the blonde hair, so that really changed her appearance as well as the change in hair colour. Definitely prefer her as a brunette too

such a brilliant series. Though I am a huge fan of Mr Darcy (and, of course, of Colin Firth) I find it difficult not to like Richard Armitage better!

Yeah, didn't realise Daniella is blonde... I prefer her a brunette. But she's truly truly a cute girl... The best screen pair for RA, IMHO.

The first time I saw Richard Armitage was on The Vicar of Dibley...it was love at first sight and now that I have watched North and South I see that I must watch more of his performances which now includes "The Hobbit". I have discovered that you are never to old to have a crush on someone. I believe in romance again, thank you Richard Armitage")
Thank you for posting. Just watched this series and enjoyed. I very much enjoyed his acting and he's handsome. He conveyed emotions so well especially in that final scene. Tender, loving, affectionate.

I wouldn't want him playing Darcy. I love Darcy, and Jane and all her stories, but it would be good if he remained distinct as his own characer in these period dramas, as Mr. Thornton. I trully love Jane, but I feel sooo bad that Gaskell is less famous, as I think that's awfully wrong. I somehow hate myself for saying that N&S is way better than P&P, but it is. :c

Well in my case,I am happy saying that North and South is what I prefer than P&P. The story isn't simply centered on the romance between the two characters-as we had seen in the series that there was a lot of time in the series used for the worker conflict and such.The story just draws you in.
Oh, yes I think so too, this story is my absolute favorite romance. I don't care what others say, N&S is #THEBEST!!!!

It just goes to show how thoroughly and how well both actors did in their respective roles because when I watch this, with both of them out of costume, as themselves, and then I watch the clips of them IN costume IN their roles, it just astounds me that they're Daniela Denby-Ashe and Richard Armitage as opposed to Margaret Hale and John Thornton, if that made sense. They just completely inhabited those roles to great effect while remaining completely recognizable to the novel's characters.
With such a powerful voice , he can read me the telephone book, I accept anything for the sake of listening to him. David Copperfiel , his favourite book and mine would be awesome

I've seen all the Jane Austin DVDS and other period films and would have to say that this was the best. The sound track was amazing; Richard Armitages character was passionate and had an intense presence. So many scenes I loved....the stair walk (that look from the window).....the dinner and of course that end.

Omg, I cry all the time when I see this interview! Richard has so much passion and love in his voice when he speaks. That they could work and act better, because there were this passion between them!

I love period romance, but the chemistry has to be there to make the romance believable. I would love to see RA I doing more romance than drama. He was cut out for those type of rolls that make our knees weak and our toes curl!

I agree. Jane Eyre--I'm just watching Robin Hood and he steals the show. So dramatic--but heart wrenching because he self destructs despite trying not to do so. That vulnerability, longing and loneliness he projects --again, heart wrenching.
