Yes. While I have no idea where the pantyhose idea to test sharp fret ends actually originated from, for sure Phil McKnight is to be given credit for bringing the idea to a larger audience - he has been doing that exact test for years now in his videos and AFAIK he is the only guitar youtuber who uses this concept. Gotta give props to Phil...
I was napping, falling asleep to this video, and Brad's soothing voice when that Scream came on, and it tripped me out. I was like WTF was that, Aliens?
Nice job Brad. BTW I finished the Larrivee. (Yes knuckles are bruised battered & scarred) It was 3/4 size. Any way after 2 weeks of humidification all cracks closed except the biggest. So I CA glued the living sh*t out of it, & the other cracks. Sealed all the open wood, etc. The owner was thrilled. Now they're talking about a 70s Gibson acoustic that used as a bludgeon during a family row. I said I'll try. Great idea on the Blend pot. Never thought of it. (After a year & half of US Navy Electrical Electronics training you'd think I'd remember that crap). Any way your boy is impressed.
Thankyou Brad It’s my 55th birthday and I think this was the best gift by far I’m super grateful to steward some great gear and a few wonderful instruments What more could one ask for ? Shalom

Great video. The "strat" is the most basic form factor of electric guitar in the world. Leo Fender designed it to be modular. I've thrown together many dirt cheap but high quality strat builds in 40 years of guitar slinging. Strats are my thing. I don't care who makes it if the quality and price are right. But when they are not, I do my own build. I laugh my ass off at those who waste money on the Fender "Custom Shop." What a rip! There are also plenty of great aftermarket parts for great prices. For pickups you don't have to settle for Duncan, DiMarzio, EMG, or spend even more on Lollar, Fralin, and some of the other "boutique" brands. I've found good pickups for ten dollars or less.
People do not realize how much work (if done by hand, even MORE work) a neck requires to make correctly. The truss rod routing, insertion and capping alone is tedious work, if it is a different wood fretboard, that fretboard needs HOURS of work to cut, radius, sand, glue, drill - repeat several times, before it is ready to even begin putting frets on. When I buy a neck and it has perfect fret work, I.E. no sharp edges, no hanging frets, no frets cut short, and no high frets...I count that as HUGE win. If I have to do a little sanding, filing, gluing, refinishing work to it and it has perfect frets....I really do not mind the extra work I have to do.
I've scratch built a dozen or so necks from curly maple or flamed tiger maple for les Paul builds and it is almost 1/2 the build of the entire guitar. mahogany is easier but it still takes a lot of work. Fret boards can take hours of work even if they are prebuilt.Very nice work Brad
Another great video, those necks are awesome.Ive never seen that quality of wood (curly maple) on a fender. I hope they keep everything in stock until I can get my money right.Things have been kinda tight for me lately. oh well thank you for your videos
Minwax wipe-on Poly also works excellent. Been using it for years. Fine steel wool buffing after it dries gives you a nice satin finish. Only drawback it takes a while to dry, very much depends on your humidity level.
I've used several products like that you can get a Home Depot on guitars with very good results. Rustoleum makes good spray on poly finishes if you're doing a body refin. Saves time when the color and clear coat is in one can.
I was looking for this comment. I have found that tung oil stinks after a couple years. I use the wipe on poly satin. Little trick you can use, add some Japan Dryer to the wipe on poly. It’ll dry faster
I must have had bad luck with Tung oil because when I have used it in the past, I find that it stinks really bad years later. I switched to wipe on poly. The satin stuff is pretty good
The only time l think an Audio Taper Pot is a better choice. Is when the player is partial to doing frequent volume swells with the knob rather than a pedal.
Really interesting. Been building mostly basses for 45 years, never once thought about doing a partscaster, I may just have to try it. A lot less work than carving my own necks and building neck through🤣
Nice man! That turned out great and I really dig that amp. I was checking Temu after your first build from them. Those nice necks sold out fast. I will keep looking for parts from them to complete another build. Should only cost me about a bill since I have the body, pickups and pickguard already! Great work and thanks for the inspiration bro!
Sure those are not your pantyhose? They fit pretty nicely. The laser engraver on the headstock is a good idea; I've been looking for an alternative to water slide decal, and this gives me an idea. Thanks.
you know its been a while since I heard you play, and a few short years ago you had great skills, but now I must say your lead lines are just killing it. Nice work all the way around.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 That pantyhose test was gold!! Where’s Phil McKnight wearing his wife’s pantyhose?! Love it!! (Hey, if male pro football players can wear them, why not male guitarists?!) Great builds! They came out really nice!
Temu has some great deals (except for the clothing) to be sure and I use them a lot. However, for around $200.00 or less you can get a Fire Fly guitar with locking tuners, bone nut, roasted maple neck, roasted ash or mahogany body, 2 alnico five pups and one Hum-bucker in the bridge and stainless steel frets. These are quality guitars that rival Fender made guitars. My 2 Stratocasters cost me $169.00 for a relic and $179.00 for a solid white guitar plus shipping. Just my 2 cents worth. Peace.
Yo, this build is sick! The neck feels amazing, and the parts from Temu are legit. Don't listen to the haters who haven't even tried it themselves. I'm building my own guitar too, and I'm using mostly Temu parts. In my opinion, it's way better than a Fender or any other brand because I'm making it myself and choosing exactly what I want. I looked for a guitar with everything I wanted, but it was way too expensive because of the paint and parts. I'm not dissing Fender, they make great guitars, but their prices are crazy.
Neat. I would like to see how TEMU parts hold up to months or years of settling down, as far as the neck remaining stable etc. Of course, any unfinished or oiled raw maple neck should be expected to shrink a bit. Bill Nash actually says it's a feature that his guitars lose moisture in the first few years. Fret sprout is inevitable.
Nice Bianca Censori impression! That, and, what a tribute to Leo's original design: you can make one with parts off a Chinese discount website, with ordinary tools, and it still works, plays well, and sounds like a SSO.
I don't think that's what they meant by "pantyhose" test. At least I have never seen it done like that. Thank's for that image that is now etched into my brain Brad ! I'm not going to be able to sleep now. lol.
Don't download the app. The app is not just asking for the right to access your camera, contacts and Wi-Fi network. TEMU also wants the rights to unlock your phone at night without you being there and the right to be able to record audio. You also give TEMU permission to install software on your phone, read your messages and the app can take screenshots.
I couldn't agree more. Temu is such a fraud. I really wish that Canada would police sites like this from China. I was ripped off by Temu for 3 items that were stamped and advertised as solid silver, but i received Silver plated instead. I also asked for a refund for a silver ring that started turning a copper color just after about a week of wearing it. Instead of the full refund i received less than a third of the price i originally paid. I got 6 dollars!!! Please stop supporting these sham companies.
Kinda funny, I'm wrapping up a partscaster while watching this. I've got a sunburst alder Jazzmaster style body, vintage style 6 screw trem, 3 Firebird mini-humbuckers on a Strat style 5-way switch, and a nice Squier Strat neck. I found the neck at Goodwill for like $10-$15, classic one piece maple neck with the walnut skunk stripe and a nice smooth satin finish.
One thing to keep in mind when thinking about the extra work needed with the frets- more and more frequently these days even a brand new instrument from a big name company needs some fretwork and setup. Fret ends rounded, nut slotted down to an appropriate height (most are way too high), truss rod adjustment, bridge height and intonation adjusted. Seriously, I have seen many of these issues with guitars in the couple thousand dollar range.
I'll using the the brass bridges, but I feel the trem blocks in brass are well cool too. These are good for getting into builds if starting out, cool vid
@@TheGuitologist in UK I get them for about £20 to £25 you might get them less off temu check their dimension on screw holes and trem holes sometimes they can be a few mm out and can mean DIY drilling which is irksome but 9 times out of ten there bob on i think it makes a difference
I wonder if Chinese necks like these are Chinese Maple? It's a softer wood than Rock Maple, and it makes more sense that they'd use it rather than import Maple from North America.
Hey, once again, good job man I think I’m gonna have to attempt it. Build one of those myself. If I do, I’ll let you know how it came out I should say when I do
You did well, you've got the luthier in you though... Some of what you did was beyond my abilities and to buy all the tools would bunk up the price quite a bit... But for those who are set up this is a great way forward...
Really enjoying your videos and your resourcefulness (esp. your amp videos too)! Those pickups in particular look very well put together - I'm surprised (and impressed) that they even bothered engraving the model into the bobbin. But dude.. that pantyhose test lol!!!!! mad respect
Great work and video, but people need to look into temu.......a lot of people are taking the bait, hook, line and sinker. I simply refuse to even load that website on any device.
That's kinda funny! I gave a friend of mine a Custom Fender because my 60's Korean parts and Lafayette made Sears sold 50's maple neck strat style non skunk stripe Truss rod by neck pickup adjuster sounds and plays better.
Being an electrician is one thing, Knowing Your Guitars is another, I have a Fender Champion 110 amp that needs to be fixed, and I don't say "Needs Fixed"!
I hope you can be proud and recover from anything I said that busted your balls and be happy! I can fix the amp Myself but I have an inkling you are better at it than I am.
One of the biggest issues with Strat type guitars is the synchronised tremolo system, keeping it balanced over time and in tune, I used to think the issue with friction was worse at the neck nut, but there's a much steeper break angle at the bridge so I mean all friction points are important to get on top of reducing or if you can completely get rid of any friction without compromising tone, before I discovered the locking saddle blocks for a standard strat bridge with just one additional upgrade a pand head Allen screw flat and wide to lock the strings to the blocks individually, and of corse if you don't want to for out over the acceptable price range for such a small but clever design, roller blocks do really work well if they're high enough quality rollers, apart fromall that any thing made from high density ptfe works well without too much of a tone loss in fact if you like your pups high and loud a softer than brass bridge saddle block like ptfe or a ptfe nut at the headstock will help reduce those shrilling highs.
Precisely why I prefer hard tails. I wish Fender would make more of them. I also hate the volume knob location. Too close to my picking hand. If they could do away with one of the tone knobs and use the bottom locations for one volume and one tone that would be cool.
The good thing about a Strat is, if you don’t like the volume knob location, and you prefer two knobs instead of three… You can swap the pickguard. You don’t need Fender to change the design, you just need to not be lazy. If you don’t like the bridge floating, slam it. If you don’t like the tremolo system at all, convert it to a hard tail… All this talk about ptfe vs x, it’s snake oil. The thing’s that have the most dramatic effect tone is the pickups, the amp, and the speaker. The speaker being the biggest change. If you genuinely believe you hear an immeasurable difference between materials, you’re lying to yourself. Shout out to Jim Lill for debunking these stupid myths.
@@TheFakeNewsFrog Granted, it doesn't make that much difference compared to the guitar speaker, but there was a slight difference in highs in Jim Lill's neck vs string to two bench clips. I really admire the guy for his efforts. His speaker cab and mock tube amp sound videos were real eye openers. His clips aren't really long enough to hear how a note degrades, though. Bridge hardware makes a substantial tonal difference. FI, my b4 and after recordings after swapping a stock pot metal TOM bridge to an Aluminum one with Ti saddles are pretty different. What makes you think plastic saddles would damp string vibrations the same as a hard metal? Softer saddles absorb more highs. Another example: every comparison, including my own, of an Alder vs Swamp Ash body guitar reveal a difference in midrange character, and possibly bass. The Alder is more mid-forward, and the SA has stronger lower bass (which could be from how less midrange affects bass into a gain stage). Those differences become more apparent when you quickly A/B between two clips and focus on one portion of the tonal spectrum. I don't see why guitar players are so dead set that different pieces of wood make no significant difference when there are numerous examples showing otherwise? I guess your avatar is a hint. Doesn't evidence matter?
@@mattbauckman9907 regarding the volume knob location, I had the same dislike for the same reason on a jap 57 reissue strat I had in the 80's/90's, I had the all tones connected to the bottom tone knob and the volume placed in the middle tone knob location, fixed the issue. I've been thinking whether it is worth doing on my std 1996 strat that I have now but I don't play out anymore so couldn't be bothered yet.
Yo. I'm building a,start right now with the same pickup. I have 5 1970's starts and a,few grey bottoms kicking around but thought to buy a few sets of the v70. I'll have the dig up and running in week or so...but thought to chime in to see how you are feeling about them now that I have had them for awhile...please do tell!
I saw your first Temu guitar video and that sent me down a rabbit hole where I bought stuff to build a TEMU strat, and then I went wild ordering a bunch of Chibsons. Unbelievable quality coming out of China in 2024 if you know who to buy from.
Hey Brad, thank you for creating this series. Watching this video I began to wonder whether I could match one of those necks with my Fender USA Deluxe contoured heel body. I can't afford the prices on Reverb for the real Deluxe necks, and it looks to me as though those necks have MOP inlays 22 frets, but what I really want is the FEEL of a Deluxe neck - so what do you think - is this doable, or are there better options without the need to shell out too much money? That little amplifier really sounds awesome! Thanks again. David
You could build one of the early EVH frankenstrats when he was still using the fender trem and just lubing up the nut, so to speak..Use the Guitar Fetish VEH bridge pickup theyre pretty damn close to what he used and great value for the money
Log pots are different... I've used them for volumes for a while and linear pots for tones... might have to swap them around or do 1 type in my next build
I wouldn’t be surprised if that was meant to be a Squire neck, I have a Squire Strat from 2009 that has a flame maple neck with a body that was sprayed Lake Placid blue and then sprayed black.
by the way that 100$ coupon is only free AFTER you make a purchase of a certain amount, it all hinges on a litteral "wheel of fourtune" mini game. misleading.
I tried the Vintera 2 70's strat and I was disappointed by the pickup volume. The guitar tone was fantastic, just anemic. So, I thought about building my own strat.
Don't mind any negative comments on here, I'm a working guitarist who while often window shopping at Gibson sg's and LP's, now feels inspired to buy the tools and parts and make my own. Well done, first class video.
Yes and no. It depends on the pickups. Darker sounding strat pickups with higher outputs might do fine with 500k. The best thing about all of this is there really are no rules. Experiment and see what you like.

For a 100% snug fit between body and neck ,drill the holes slightly bigger in the body. Just so you can push the screws through the holes.
I'll using the the brass bridges, but I feel the trem blocks in brass are well cool too. These are good for getting into builds if starting out, cool vid
I'll look for a brass block for both of these Strats and upgrade later.
@@TheGuitologist in UK I get them for about £20 to £25 you might get them less off temu check their dimension on screw holes and trem holes sometimes they can be a few mm out and can mean DIY drilling which is irksome but 9 times out of ten there bob on i think it makes a difference
What a fantastic video have a wonderful day also happy first day of April ❤❤❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😊😊😊
I wonder if Chinese necks like these are Chinese Maple? It's a softer wood than Rock Maple, and it makes more sense that they'd use it rather than import Maple from North America.
Awesome 💯😎 Looks good sounds good... Cheers 🍻🥃🥃 🎸 🎵🎶🎶
Hey Brad! I like this one better than the last one you did. This one may have beat out Sean. Thanks for the cool video.
Happy Easter
Really enjoying your videos and your resourcefulness (esp. your amp videos too)! Those pickups in particular look very well put together - I'm surprised (and impressed) that they even bothered engraving the model into the bobbin. But dude.. that pantyhose test lol!!!!! mad respect
Long time subcriber great vid! Love the legato
I used to sit around eating with one hand and doing legato with the other. :D
I apologize For a previous text where I implied you were selling "junk' to your subscribers..
Pushing 61 I definately need a magnifying glass to prevent me From pissing on your shoes asshole!
That's awesome ! Great job on the neck ! Looks and sounds great !
OMG asmr pick guard film removal not 1 but 2 x… lol
Dude you dad rocked the crap outta that temu build, nice rippin’ n riffin’…
If you don’t like the tremolo system at all, convert it to a hard tail…
All this talk about ptfe vs x, it’s snake oil.
Love your videos! Hope you are well!
I am great, thanks! You?
Rhett Shull is the reincarnation of a young Howard Sprague. I saw that Sprague capacitor, and it made me recall this. Had to share.
Does temu make kitchen cabinets? Maybe look into that
sweet project brother!
ive noticed loads of import guitar companies using the "B" pots for volume...
nice demo on the pots with tap testing!
You got me at the pantyhose test !!! 🤣 We should ask Phil Mcknight to do that this way now !!! Noy sure he will comply though ...
I saw your first Temu guitar video and that sent me down a rabbit hole where I bought stuff to build a TEMU strat, and then I went wild ordering a bunch of Chibsons. Unbelievable quality coming out of China in 2024 if you know who to buy from.
Put japan, dryer in your tung oil it will dry three times faster!!
Thanks for the tip!
David
Great guitar build Brad! And you are a genius guitar player too!
Thanks for the compliments. I actually almost deleted this demo and started over because I wasn't really feeling it at the time. :/
Really nice video! Its another passion i ve discovered building guitars.
Very nice, sounds and looks great, thank you,you and the scarred dude are my favorit. 🥳
I ♥️ccp too, keep up their good work lol
Great video!
I'm going to give a 'LMAO'...if you have to ask why...watch the video
Brad is tha man!!!!!dude can make anything awesome
plug it in the fender a strat needs reverb
also I generally prefer working with 8 hole, or 10 if possible
Nice dremeling on the pickguard! 🎸👊🏼🎸
You have a Jag! Approved!!!
Happy Easter Brad
Happy Easter!
Hey Brad nice legs better guitar, btw did you see Tim Sways last post ? Debunking tone wood its great watch it mate ! From Charlton London England....😅
09:45 thought you had a real shagged out woody convertible sitting on ur driveway but thats part of ur porch !
Don’t they have a fret pressing tool like an arbor press with attachments?
Dunno. Didn't look.
I just looked. Didn't see one.
If you need an arbor press for cheap I'd check harbor freight if there's a store near you.
Don't mind any negative comments on here, I'm a working guitarist who while often window shopping at Gibson sg's and LP's, now feels inspired to buy the tools and parts and make my own. Well done, first class video.
35:30 Lucky 🍀 Larry😂
Amazing how he was able to come out making billions on that tragedy. What a lucky guy. I'm sure it's just a coincidence.
PULL IT!
It's the smartest thing to do, 'they' say.
@@TheGuitologist those fuckers have a thing coming
How do we know know that the pro shop is not buying temo parts, they look good quality to me,
Great video man, the pantyhose test was hilarious!
My strat just sounds weird maybe it's the wild fire 30 amp or that's jr's called rokker and was likely made in some ones garage
Happy Easter Brad. I appreciate your Phil McKnight Easter egg in this video. He may have trouble fitting in your wife's pantyhose, though.
All my necks pass the pantyhose test.
Hope you didn't experience any of those high winds recently in the Louisville area
Just wondering would 500k pots be better… can you still get them??..🙏🏻🙏🏻
250k pots sound better with single coils if you are going for tone.
Yes and no. It depends on the pickups. Darker sounding strat pickups with higher outputs might do fine with 500k. The best thing about all of this is there really are no rules. Experiment and see what you like.
Oh, and my second response is, yes, you can get 500k pots.
Really really enjoyed that!!!…🙏🏻🎈🎈
Thanks for watching. Glad you enjoyed it.
