This vintage 1972 Electra "Super Rock" Model 2252 Gibson Les Paul Custom copy was Made in Japan, but somewhere along the way it was severely mistreated. A HOLE was drilled into the headstock, the electronics were trashed, the frets were worn out. It is time for a complete restoration. In this video we'll use a bunch of parts we got from TEMU to restore this old beauty to jamming condition.

Hey Brad, Long-time viewer and fan of your channel here.. my name is Randall, by the way. I was curious about that Electra les paul in this video... I wasn't sure if you'd be willing to sell it or not... after watching this video, I was highly impressed with your work and how it turned out and sounded after you were all done with it. You did a fantastic job reviving it. If not, I completely understand. Just figured I'd give it a shot cause I fell in love with it turned out.
I'll sell it. Asking $450. Email me if you want it. bradlinzy at gmail@@CallMeBigWorm
@@TheGuitologist I'll shoot ya an email!
I know nothing about T. E! MU. The only thing I do know is they got a bunch of junk on facebook. I did not know you can sell and buy things
Compare this to a gibson.
MAN, that jam at the end was killer! Really shows that more money doesn't always equal the best tone. The neck pickup sounded especially good!
Yea the end jam was awesome!
Thanks man. I really appreciate you watching. Glad you enjoyed the show.
Brad's brain is obviously better or better than mine . Not only does he fully understand electronics , he 's not a slouch when it comes to woodworking and finishing .. Then he sits on the couch and plays the outro jam like he was a session muso reading the script ... Is there nothing Brad cannot do ? Cheers mate , Christian in Australia
Wow! Impressive commitment to the finish work. Love the guitar string ground bus on the pots. So creative
All the old time tone chasers didn’t and don’t care where something is made. It’s all about what it sounds like.
Right on. I ca't stand when tjey go on and on about what the guitar LOOKS like. Shoot! Let's hear it!
I love rebuilding guitars from this era. I also love to watch other techs rebuild also.
I really enjoy making old Japanese guitars play right. It’s like giving something a chance that never had a chance.
@@TheGuitologist Yes, I rebuilt a Japanese Strat and played it for years. I wish I still had that one. Of course I really did bastardize it by installing a Gibson mini humbucker right between the neck and middle pickup. I put a push/pull volume knob that swapped the humbucker with the middle pickup. A very nice Warm sound from an otherwise thin Strat sound. I know, I know, they have apps, I mean peddles for that. 😁
@@TheGuitologisthave you ever rebuilt an old tube radio to repurpose into a guitar amp .??
@@TheGuitologistlove your channel . Just found it and I’m hooked
Dude!!! That thing came out great! From the right angle you'd never ever guess there was a hole in the front of that headstock. That thing just screams something Ace Frehley would play, I love it. Amazing work, Brad.
I always associate dual creams on a Paul with Ace.
I found myself shaving a plastic backplate for a Schector & @ 1st I tried using sandpaper on the ground because the tile floor was flat, and then I used the rear of a knife & shaved the plastic. It was part of a knife set. Not exactly a steak knife but, a shorter knife in the set. It did a fantastic job! I finished up with the sandpaper, but the reverse side of a knife dragging it backward worked perfectly on the plastic action covers! I was not cutting it, I was dragging the back side of the knife & it was removing it in strips kind of. It was definitely faster then hand sanding! The backplate is now submerged & looks much better than it was!
Stellar blues licks, Brad! And a beautiful repair job!
Honestly, that was awesome. The makeover, the electronics, the fret dressing, the rock out in the outro. Perfect. Your obvious enjoyment from playing the finished instrument. Thoroughly enjoyable video. Thank you.
Glad you liked it! Thanks!
I have a Univox from the same era with basically the same finish with a maple neck. Had it for 30 years and it's still one of my most comfortable guitars to play. Great video!
My first quality guitar was an Electra x 220. Sunburst. Got it for $125 bucks in 1983. I still love it and play it often. 5 way switch for in and out of phase and coil taping on both pickups. Super heavy slab of a body and a screaming hot bridge pickup. A solid axe.
Old plywood-bodies sounds awesome. I have two plywood guitars, and they both have insane sustain!
I too have stopped trying to figure people out.
Most are like broken cuckoo clocks.
The little bird comes out and sounds for 11:00

Amazing! I love your amp work and restorations. You just turned that into a great looking and sounding guitar. 🎸 bravo. And I have to mention the guitar jam at the end. Great video Brad.
We might end up withe a 3rd channel Brad the Luthier channel
Thank you very much!
Ive got a 1974 Ibanez Martin acoustic copy and it too has a hole in the headstock, I've concluded that the only reason for it would have been to fit a cigarette as the usual spot under the strings is too small to fit one.
That might be an even worse reason than a wall hanger! :D
Cigarette hole, great idea! Now I'm deciding where to screw the ashtray and cup holder on...
woah, you may be on to something@@robnic52
@@TheGuitologist Very early Clapton Strats had a cigarette hole on the edge of the headstock, with a brass bushing dimensioned to hold a Rothman's

My 1st electric guitar when I was 15 in 1978 was Electra X910(Rick Derringer model), the most rarest and valuable Electra guitar now. Boy, I wish I still had that!
The one that got away.
I love these guitar videos man.
Loved this video. Guitar came out great. Vicious playing at the end fella. Great stuff.
Loved this video. The Electra turned out great. Vicious playing at the end fella. Great stuff.
Crazy playing! Wow. Guitar looks great.
One thing I've started to notice with these overseas cheaper parts, is sometimes they're name brand stuff that maybe didn't make the cut to be on the name brand instruments. I saw a video recently of a firebird-type knockoff, and the bridge and saddle both had epiphone stamps that were partly welded over to hide the stamp. maybe those necks were made by fender but didn't make the quality control cut and ended up on temu
To get that headstock really flat use a small block to sand it. Soft fingers will never get it flat. Lucky thing that the pearl was actually thick. I have a 1972 Yamaha acoustic on the bench with a broken truss rod and a damaged headstock. Pearl logo was a decal. That was a surprise. Great playing at the end, there!
Just between you and me, it was calculated that temu spent 2 BILLION dollars in advertising last year. With their rock bottom prices it makes me wonder what is paying for it. Got some great stuff from ali , though. Their business model makes just a tad more sense, although probably most would apply. I love the preshaped real bone nuts (smell like the dentists when shaping and everything) and fleor pick guards
First, we don’t know how much they spent, but even if that figure is correct, they’re clearly making a run at competing with Amazon long term. Jeff Bezos owns media in the US. He can buy all the hit pieces he wants. I trust nothing those sons of bitches say anymore anyway. Without citations and documented sources, there’s no story.
@@TheGuitologist Of course we don't know. Fact is, though, I've been bombarded for I don't know how long with all sorts of temu ads (although it seems most for yoga pants on extremely hourglass-figured ladies). It seems like one in every five on every platform I visit is temu. It's just gotta be a lot.
Anyway, I'll shut up about it. Wouldn't want to cramp your style. Pleroo pickguards are nice too.
No doubt they're going hard with their advertising. I think their goal is to get as many people to use the app as possible so they start comparing their experience to Amazon, ebay, etc.@@GertvanderDoes
Great job! Actually by far my favorite part of the video was you playing the guitar at the end. You are amazing!
Nice results and great jam,Brad!
Your playing at the end was absolutely killer!!
Gotta say I enjoyed this video way more than any other video in a few years knocked it outta the park
I just recently aquired one of the new fender blues deluxe reissue amplifier to play on with my 2016 american fender stratocaster. Absolutely loving it so far, excellant pair! But am also loving watching your videos. Love seeing your knowledge with working on guitars. Growing up i always wanted to learn how to work on guitars when older. So its cool seeing others work on them and build them even as well. I loved your strat build video. Sounded great! My first guitar was an 08 all mahogany gibson les paul(had one of the best feeling necks ive ever played on) sadly I lost it during heroin addiction. But as much as i miss it i sure enjoy what i have now. A cheap ibanez with REALLY nice sounding humbuckers(no idea what kind exactly) and an amazing neck and fretboard for the price and cheapness of the guitar. Decent ibanez two point trem system, just wish the arm was pop in instead of screw in. But its fun to play on as well.
"I've just stopped tryin' to figure people out, they don't make sense." ROFL welcome to the club. Cheers.
I grew up playing a Matsumoku made Westone Spectrum LX (198mbk) it resonated so much it tickled my throat & made me cough! I miss that guitar so much!!!! Your jam at the end of the video was spectacular! See how they have a way of bringing it out of ya! That is why I love Matsumoku made guitars!!!
I have the same guitar, it was my grandfather's.
I had it restored... it sounds great🎸😍
The first band I was in, the guitarist had an Electra Les Paul. I was probably about a 78, with the new headstock. I thought it was the greatest guitar I had ever seen. Actually, it probably was. :) Thanks for keeping this one alive.
Really nice work & my favorite jam ever. Sounds like a great guitar.
Great work and playing Brad! Gotta love that neck pickup. Smooooth... :)
Bradford!!! Excellent work restoring that Electra headstock!!! My best friend has a MPC with the modules. It's black with the open book headstock. He says it plays as well as most of his Les Paul's.
Awesome job Brad sounds great
Geez, I thought everybody drilled hanger holes in their headstocks.
I even drill them through my bagpipes and saxophones. You know, that's what duct tape was invented for. Get a Clue!! LOL
I drill them in all my basketballs and footballs.
As a cigar smoker those holes are a necessity.
That jam at the end was nice, I like watching other people improvise like that.
Improvise??? I wrote all that down!
tab plz lol
@@TheGuitologist
Kidding
😅 that was a totally killer run. Great tone. Brad has been putting in the time getting better and fn better.
@@TheGuitologist I know I was kidding too. Could you imagine tabbing that out?
I had an old Elektra 310 or 320 MPC Les Paul. The sustain was unbelievable. Beautiful guitar! Elektras were great for the money. Gibson players hated me, lol.
Great playing brother at the end of the video loved it.
thank you, brother. Appreciate that.
Lookout chillun, Bad Brad's gonna dust his broom, so don't let the sparks hit ya!!
I love your jams at the end of your videos. You rock Brad
Great video Brad and amazing jam !
Thanks Mark!
Absolutely Awesome!
You are on to some-thing good. I do know that "Temu" adopt the "Loss-leader" marketing approach, where the neck may have cost them a lot more to make than usual but they will make some excellent parts and sell them at no-profit to get their foot through the door. Well spotted Brad!
Dude, if someone appears to be just giving money away, you bet your ass I'm getting in that line. I'd be a fool not to.
In the late 70's in high school, we used to play those bolt on neck import Les Paul copies. One was a black Aria with a rosewood fretboard, and the other, a white Ibanez with a lacquered maple fretboard...I don't know where the Ibanez is anymore, but the friend that had the Aria might still have it...I'm still in touch with him, so probably going to ask him if he still has it, haha!. Thanks for the video, and hope you and yours are doing great!
I am addictied to buying temu guitar stuff LOL. I discovered a couple of months ago. Acutullly lot of different Temu stuff. I guess that les paul copy turned out OK they way you playing it. Makes me want to finish some of the necks I started to work on but never finished them.
Came out good! Nice playing Brad!
I remember seeing ads for Electra MPC Guitars in mags as a kid in the 70's and wanting one so bad.
Thanks for the blast from the past Brad!
Can’t believe how good the repair came out !! This proves most of the sound is in the fingers or expensive pickups are just overpriced. I have left Epiphone and Squire pickups in the guitars they came in and they sound fantastic.
I've found that about 85-90% of the time anymore, even the cheap guitars have decent sounding pickups if they're from a recognized brand.
Very nice work once again, Brad, a lot of effort into the headstock came out great it was worth saving and of course you played the piss out of it as usual
Commenting again after hearing you play it after doing the referb...no flies on that guitar...it sounds spectacular, and obviously is not getting in the way of playing it, haha! Just shows with a little TLC how good those guitars are, and really are a great option for someone who doesn't want, or can't, spend 2 to 3K on a USA Les Paul.
Hello Brad. I also still have my first guitar my parents bought me for my Birthday. A black Electra Les Paul copy. Same model as the one you have on this video. It sounds really good for a copy. I’ve never took it apart to see each individual pickups, pots and etc. It was my first good guitar when I got in the early 80’s. The tuning keys were not in good shape, so I bought new ones. At the time, I was not thinking of type, just as long as I had tuning keys. Well, I got home and started working on replacing them when I realized I bought Fender style 6 in-line instead of the Les Paul style. But I made it work with the bottom three keys backwards. I didn’t care, because it stayed in tune, thereafter. Awesome blues riff at the end, Brad. 🎸👍
Awesome job! That was a fun watch.
Broke right now and can't order parts and shit for a while. These videos are cool because it's like showing up at a buddies house and he has some cool shit to check out and some to tinker with. Hope all is well your way!
Thanks for the uploads like this!
I've got an old Harmony that I've been wanting to make playable again. This gives me motivation.
Hey Brad, greetings from Scotland mate. I always return to your chanel as I like your honesty and the love of saving things and making them live again..and not a whiff of guitar snobbery. I've had a number of Westone guitars(Electra in US) and they're terrific instruments, still have first guitar that's been butchered to death(I was young and stupid😊) but still plays great! Just to sign off by saying great rebuild and hey you can really play bud. Keep up the "real" chanel mate😎
Hell yeah man. Westone, Electra, Aria Pro, etc. All great instruments. I can't stand when people stupidly turn their noses up at good stuff because they think they're supposed to.
I hear yah mate, but the tides slowly turning as people are getting wise to the quality instruments produced the old Japanese companies, particularly Matsumoko..but if we keep it a secret for now it's all the more us lol. More power to your Elbow Brad, keep up the good work mate✌️
For leveling CA glue, you want to make sort of a card scraper out of a razor blade. Run it across a piece of iron to create a burr( I saw it on TH-cam, and it worked for me).
Your guitar neck looks 100% better than it did before. 👍👍👍
Man, i want that electra.. that was my first electric guitar when i was young. i bought it in a pawn shop for $80 and it was spray painted black.. i always regretted getting rid of it..
That was some mean playing, dude...kudos !
Very nice job Brad. I recently volunteered to repair a friend's guitar. She brought me the MOST beat up guitar, bridge pulling up, cracks in sound board.(It had been languishing in her basement untold years.) now here's the kicker, it's a Larivee!!! Mahogany back & sides, plus Mahogany neck. I think the fret board is Ebony (I can't scrape it, the woods to hard grain is extremely tight.) I wanted to slap her (but in her usual condition I doubt it would have any effect. LoL) any way I'm taking my time. You don't know how sick I was when I saw the badge. OMG Any way you did a spectacular job on that Nut & headstock. (Nuts ain't easy) I ordered a bunch of those unbleached blanks. They are decent TBH. Great playing too.(As usual) Blessings!!! BTW I'm in NJ (do they have Spring or Summer? All it does is Rain. LMAO but I got a sweet woman who has given free time to do my thing.)
Take your time and bring her back right!
@@TheGuitologist I will Brad. The poor thing is beat to death. I checked the SN it was built in '97 it's an OM3 Those things sell for a couple Grand new. How could anyone let a guitar get in that bad of shape? Well as is said "It ain't my guitar." LOL. Blessings!!!! Hope the kids are doing well too!!!!
They're doing real good man. Thanks for asking. I am a blessed man, beyond what I deserve.@@bluesingmusic3443
Great job Brad! Awesome blues jam…That guitar just may be a keeper…
Well hot 🔥 dam that's a hell of a job..it was those 1962 capacitors that made it sound that good 👍
Back around 1978 I had an Electra, looks very similar to this one but it had a cherry burst? finish. The pickups were Chrome plated humbuckers like the ones you pointed out as original. Up around the 15th fret tho, on the D string, if I bent the string too much it would fret out. I used that guitar to record in the studio and even though I was aware that it would fret out, I still bent too far and did fret out on the recording. And that remains to this day. Oh yes I have fond memories of my Electra
Brad... really enjoyed the restoration on the axe and great to see you paying her after... really sounds niceeeeee! I've got a black Japanese Gibson copy same body style from the late 70s, '78 i think... (my first guitar) in bad need of restoration... I'd love to fix her up like you did there... took her to Guitar Center but they said don't bother 🙄 (think they just want a sale) but I need a pro like you to do it right! Keep rocking my man!
That thing sounds epic!
Great job on the Les Paul clone. Sound great and the cream cream pickups kind of match the body color and the headstock repair looks great from the front.
Front pickup looks really like the maxon used on my two morris les paul..with the big screws. lovely pickups really warm
That headstock job you did was amazing! I have one of the lawsuit guitars ! It’s the silver burst ! My first guitar I got back in the late 80’s! My parents got it out of the j c Pennie’s catalog! I’m a ace frehley fan and I had to have it cause it was shaped like a les Paul ! It’s got some dead spots on the fret board ! ⚡️ space ace Ron⚡️
Those Electras were everywhere in the late 70s, at least down here on the MS Coast. I had one, my first electric, with a new Peavey Classic 30.
Man I love theses types of videos please do more guitar builds like this one. Brad you awesome at the end of this video.
Thanks! Will do!
Hey,Brad awesome restoration on that electra, sounds and plays like butter,Cheers!
Great rebuild and a fantastic play out!
Thanks Bradley. 🙂
Love the LP..ive got a 70s lawsuit era Electra SG Copy .. I love it...mines still all original.
I bought an all natural clear finished curly maple Electra in the late 70's. Mine had a brass nut and had a neck through body instead of your bolt on. Where the toggle switch is located mine came with a five position knob to select pickup combinations.
These were sold as "American" guitars by the St. Louis Music Company to guitar stores and had no external stickers or markings indicating their country of origin back then.
I paid $300.00 dollars at the time and picked it because it was gorgeous and being promoted by Peter Framton who's live album was on top of the charts back then.
Sadly I had tried two used Gibson gold tops in the store for consideration but passed because they were showing some age. (60's era guitars) They couldn't move the used Les Paul's for the same $300.00 dollars they were asking for the Electra's back then.
We both know now I should have picked a gold top instead but there's no denying the fit and finish and wood selection on my Electra was better at the time than anything coming out of the Gibson factory.
The other big mistake of my life was selling my 1968 Shelby for $2000.00 bucks because it needed a head gasket. I had no idea what these would be worth just a decade later!
I bought one of those thinline Glarry Teles and I just loved the neck so I did the customary pickups, pots, tuners, etc and I don't care what anyone says, it fucking rocks. It intonated perfectly with barrel saddles and what a surprise. So fast forward, I found a cheap squire that I loved the body but the neck was razor thin. Upon looking for a nice 50's style neck I said fuck it, I'll buy another Glarry just for the neck. Yes I did carve the headstocks to look "traditional" but man that Glarry stuff is not bad at all as long as you know how to level frets and setup and all that fun stuff. I'll take those two $100 guitars up next to any $1000 Fender all night long.
You can give a cheap guitar some love and time and make it special…absolutely! Prince’s Tele was a Japanese copy. He used it until the day he died and could afford any guitar on the planet!
It sounds bloody great mate!!!
Brad! great job on that Electra man. that sound is just way too awesome with a nice dose sweetness
Brad you are a master with the solder gun
To level sand you have to use a block. By hand it’s always gonna be wavy
GREAT EPISODE BRAD, GOOD TO SEE YOU ON THE UP! NICE JOB COVERING YOUR AND OTHERS SINS.😜
Great job on the Electra. Those pups sound great!, and I loved your jam at the end. You can play, son.
I use a block with the sandpaper to help eliminate the waviness in the finish.
This Electra guitar sounds really good. Not bad at all for $14 pickups.
Great job Brad!!
Nice job! The headstock looks great! Still laughing about that damn hole!
Really cool restore. First time I've seen foil under shielding tape but it seems like a really good idea - learned something new!!! Kinda reminds me of that metal shielding cover thingy I see in some videos of vintage Gibsons
First time I've done it. Figured why not.
She lives! A great resurection.
Killer job Brad. With the guitar and the video.
For the beginners it’s probably a good idea to use a block for wet sanding if you’re trying to flatten a finish.
Yeah man, that Goldtop looks great!
Can’t help but comment that most of the uneven levels on the headstock might have been accentuated by using sandpaper free hand. I imagine that if you used flat backing on your sandpaper you would’ve had a faster and better result. Having said that, you’re way out of my league as far as talent goes. Thanks for sharing this interesting project.
Thanks for the suggestion and for watching!
Nice jam Brad! You are good. Greg Martin is going to want that guitar now! Way to rip! That Chibson/Japan guitar and you sound pretty good
Greg could put some stank on it too!
I've owned a few Electra model guitars through the years and they were pretty good guitars
That Electra cleaned up pretty damn nice, killer playin brother
We have a bunch of 70's and 80's Electra guitars in our collection. They are all awesome guitars. The MPC are really cool especially if you have a handful of sound cartridges for them. Nobody picks up our Electra Les Paul and says anything other than "Wow this feels and plays amazing"
The MPCs are way ahead of their time.
Only ever seen 2 elektras in my country. Nice recovery there Brad, and it sounds so good.
Where are you from?
Great job Brad !
I still have a ‘76 Ibanez “lawsuit” bass, a Ric 4001 copy. Bolt-on neck of course, but the detail and craftsmanship is superb. _And_ , it sounds like a Ric.
I think i love love lawsuit basses even more than guitars. Don’t see too many anymore.
Brad you were on fire with those blues licks.......hot damn that was some hard rockin kick ass stuff. Absolutely loved it.
I cant believe some of these guys you ha e connections to haven't tried gettin you in the studio or on the road with them. Amazing work nrother man. Amazing
Once you get to a certain level you find there’s players who run circles around you in their sleep. I’m happy with my place in the guitar universe. I do my little modest thing and make my silly videos, and i get to play a bit at the end. I’m content.
would love to hear an album you produce entirely, you seem to have a handle on everything ........bass,guitar,drums,vocals you can rip and its all feels, unique and fresh though
