really diggin your content recently! we are back to the old school guitologist! you are the man for used gear on youtube. most of the other big guitar youtubers are just marketing people at this point. keep up the good work!
@pjbguitars Totally agree! My mornings before work are usually checking all the usual marketing spots my regional local auctions, looking for cool gear. I appreciate the channel.
You know, this was fun. Seeing what to look for is very informative. It really sucks that actual music stores have gone out of business. I’ve played all sorts of guitars and you really do need to play one before you buy it. You mentioned aria pro and a few other of the brands you’ve mentioned. I’ve played a few aria pro’s and 2 of them were some of the nicest feeling guitars I’ve played and a couple were absolute junk. Same with old USA peavey guitars and a bunch of brands. I have an American peavey predator that I’d put up against any currently made USA fender Strat. I’ve played some that were junk too. God, I wish we still had mom & pop shops. Keep up the great work Brad!
Seeing you search through the same guitars that pop up on my Facebook marketplace 😂 recently did work on a Japanese Strat identical to that red one. Those are really well built
I bought one brand new in 86 or 87 and i loved it but the trem was absolute garbage. There were three locking trem designs back then, all of them sucked in one way or another, that particular one was potmetal.
Thanks for letting me sit with you and run through the offers! I’m digging the airbrushed Epiphany. Like the Antigua-ish pickguard whether it’s original or not. Maybe the amateurish airbrushing of the celebrities could be removed…?
FB had a 2016 fender professional telecaster in mint condition for $600 ‼️ They are going for $1000 - $1200 . And 2 people were looking at the guitar. The person sent me a message saying that it's still available ‼️ Sorry I'm a NYer and why would 2 people turn down a mint condition guitar ⁉️ It was a scam ❗
Kramer was an American company. However, not a single Kramer was EVER made in the USA. Not even the Neptune NJ stuff. Those were made in Lucido Canada.
2:45 … I’ve played a million guitars, and nothing compares to a stage master. I tried to trade my LP custom for one , and was told No. They are terrific, have wonderful balance and sustain forever due to the neck thru design. My first experience was a red one… same shark fin inlays… beautiful. Thanks for sharing.
Got the same t shirt in Black! His single coils rock, got a hybrid alinco /ceramic, I think its the only one he made. Never heard of Marketplace(oh FB thats why, im a idiot today =)...cool vid bud.
I have been a fan of your videos for a while, now after seeing what I just saw you are my new hero, WOW man, you have a picture of Bill Monroe on your wall, you are one cool cat, I have so many Bill Monroe stories that I know you would love to hear
Paul Hamer made his first checkerboard explorer in Wilmette, Illinois. I was there when he brought it out. We all played it. Nice very nice. To my understanding, Rick Neilsen ended up with #1. Northern Prairie Music was the place.
Its crasy the deals you guys get in the states on the used market... Here in canada in my area, that Gibson custom would have been wayyyy closer to its new price. You dont see deals like that around here.
1:06:07 I had a Harmony H162 back in the 90s. Had a beautiful bright tone and a dream to play. Probably my favorite acoustic ever. Was unfortunately reduced to kindling by an overexuberant mosh pit connoisseur during a gig.
I agree with you on the Hammonds. I got a M3 for $100 about 5 years ago and with minimal work and little cleanup I got it working. I even touched up the finish and re-glued and replaced some veneer. I was going to gut it, but I just couldn't do it after I got it working so well. I have gutted a Conn and a Lowery in the last couple years but F those. Hammond B3 is like a Les Paul Burst and an M3 is like a 58' LP Jr. that would be a sin to gut one of those at this point especially.
After several changes in management and ownership, Guild was eventually purchased by the Fender Musical Instruments Corporation in 1995. I bought a guild in 1996
That Aria Pro 2 is a badass guitar, looked like it was in pretty good shape too. $500 sounds like a sweet deal, especially with the case being included. Probably be a bit of a challenge to find a hardcase to fit that one otherwise. I really dig the shape on those, all blacked out too. I'm not into those gigantic locking trem systems, but I think I could find a way to live with it in this case. Just spent about the same on something the other day, so I need to stop daydreaming, lol.
That Kramer is awesome. Love those headstocks. And dude you should try and get that Dean if its still available, that thing was sweet too. Offer the dude 400 for it. If its still there and been a week or two, he might take it.
I am the one that owns the red hamer slammer series guitar u had on you channel thanks for showing it and I love the channel and u are right they are great guitars
I have 2 Univox LP copies but they are older than that one. One someone gave me they other I bought for $100 as a husk and I just finished shooting an Iced Tea burst on it.
@TheGuitologist no, I have thought of doing a channel but I don't have the equipment, time or know how in editing to go down that rabbit hole. Besides I have too many interests guitars and restoration, amps building and mods of vintage gear, old radios and record players, old wind up clocks, vintage book restoration, vegetable gardening, cooking/curing smoking meats, building ww1 aircraft models , oil painting I barely have time to sleep or date women.
Looking at an EVH iii 50 watt head for $850 on craigslist. Its haunting me. I have an old Peavey 4×12 from the late 80's, celestion g12k 85 speakers ( I think thats the name, lol). Been tied to an absolutely infuriating Blackstar HT 40, I swear Im going to haul it out back like old yeller and put it out of OUR misery.
😂 Black Star amps blow up all the time ! The EVH is the way to go ! I have the stealth 50 /half stack and it's way better with old celestion speakers than new ones. I also use the new 5150 iconic combo 12 with 40 watts and it's a killer amp for about $500 but if your ears are old and like old amps just like myself then you should probably get the EVH 5150iii ! If you want a Marshall that makes things easier and cheaper, you can get a DSL 40 for $300 ! Killer sounding amp and had power swap switch so you can basically have DSL 20 for home and DSL 40 for groups and jams. I'm very happy with my inexpensive amps !😅
@@AuntAlnico4 I played a Marshall DSL20 today, I brought my daughter to the music shop thinking she might want a new guitar ( she didnt, wierd kid, lol). I liked it. Had some beef. I have become interested in the Iconic series as you mentioned, the price point is attractive. The choice is between that or an LBX stealth with a 2×12 cab. I think perhaps either one would be excellent. I can upgrade to something larger in the future if I have the resources ( but that 50 watt on craigslist would pair well with the old 4×12 I think... still debating just goin for it) . And yes, yay BLACKSTAR!! bought that sucker used 3 or 4 months back, and it seems most of my time has been spent trouble shooting recurrent issues... Sometimes, it sounds good for a minute if I'm lucky.
found a vintage aria acoustic dreadnaught guitar in the garbage, someone had it sitting for 30 years in there shed, no strings and the bridge had to be fully restored, had a friend bring me the acoustic and i checked the serial to find it was made late 1950s, at the original aria factory which is the same quality as a vintage martin. had the aria acoustic setup and restored to playable condition, told my guitar shop friends to be careful not to change the look, keep it rough as it was, but repair the bridge and make it a playable stage and recording guitar.. my aria is soo great i barely play it live, and use to record new music all the time, its my main acoustic, sounds unreal, bright but dark too its perfect for me.. never selling it either..
Binder buttons, those little brass paper organizer like clips, work well for a sizzle cymbal, they have a brass button with two feet that you bend over after placing in the holes of sheets of notebook paper, just drop them in holes drilled in the cymbal, and sizzle away, seen a homemade one like this once, sounds good.
@@TheGuitologist If you don't want to drill the cymbal bath plug chain or any small link chain held onto the cymbal nut works well. I use the very small ball type bath chains we have in the UK. I know you guys have the pull bath plugs from my time in the US.
I got my Jackson king V off of FB market for my B-day present last year . The body and neck is great but the nut bolts were stripped and the licensed FR was beat to shit . So after replacing the nut which is no easy task at least for someone who knows nothing about guitar repair and changing the FR with a Gotoh trem im really really happy it wasn’t easy for this noob fixer upper but now plays like a dream . Oh yeah also replaced the tuners with D’Addario locking tuners , say what you want about locking tuners don’t help with keeping a guitar in tune well I gotta call BS on that along with the locking nut it never goes out of tune 😊
Old guitarist friend ordered a Strandberg once. It showed up, I was super excited, I played it for like 3 minutes and determined it wasn't for me. At all.
That Cort may be early to mid 70s as by 1980-82 Cort made legit stuff. That Supreme head is also sick! Just think that the 1990 turquoise stripe 1990 Bandit 80 112 was the best Peavey ever made, and that's the head version of the Special 160 ! That 412ms cab has the regular Sheffield speakers that are different from the EVH versions, more like V30. Glenn Fricker speaks for himself ... does he really have a sweet tone?
I used to have a BC Rich Gunslinger that the previous owner did a DIY tiger stripe finish (George Lynch). It didn't look that bad from 20 feet away, lol, but yeah, great guitar. Also had a BC Rich ST III in Tony MacAlpine finish (total 80s crackle). Should have kept them.
The new Kramer’s are not the same as the 80’s however, the reissue Baretta Special at $180 is a fantastic guitar once you remove the bleed capacitor. I have Corona Strats and Gibson LPs, but I play the $180 Baretta more because it just plays amazingly. For any of you younger players with limited funds I guarantee this is your best bang for the buck.
I can’t imagine anyone faking a Fender S1 bridge. It’s complicated but is a very stable tremolo. A lot of them have the the micro-tuners missing, but it looks like that one has the full set. I have the same 1986 model. It’s an ‘E’ serial number, and a great guitar.
Why oh why would anyone put a middle pickup on a tele? The middle pickup is the main thing i hate about strats. Its in the way. The tele control layout is perfection the strats isnt. Unpopular opinion i lnow but a strat body with the tele pickup and control layout would be amazing though
I got a Charvel hss this winter. Never had an hss before. The middle pickup is a pain in the ass, I only use the bridge anyway and trhe extra pups 'just get in the way
That's a easy one. Move pickup switch to the pickguard. Locate pots further apart on a custom made control plate. Space everything to personal preference. (Routing necessary... who cares? Is what routers/hatchets are for).
Marketplace has turned Craigslist into a ghost town and it's kind of a shame. At least with Craigslist I didn't get posts from Lancaster, Michigan while looking for deals in a 50 mile radius of Athens, Georgia. So annoying.
Have a fender elite but my oldest guitar and one I'll never get rid of is my Kramer pacer Americana in a pink (😂😂😂😂😂😂 pink I know but she plays lovely) with like a blue sheen through it when it's hit by light, think it's an 86 guitar
I went to my QST guitar show this weekend.. picked up a ibanez roadstar 320 for $250 and. Traded a Speedloader NJ Beast for a fender contemporary strat mij. Great deals in opinion. Later that day I traded a 70s lawsuit hondo 2 for a 2x12 orange cab... Great weekend
@vincemcman4086 yeah I agree been trying to sell it for months now.. but they said they had like 40 pairs of strings on hand in their warehouse. So they have the upper hand.. but yes it was a pain.. super happy with the fender contemporary.
People in New York, Florida, and California are HIGH. I hate marketplace out here in California because people think their shit is worth millions of dollars.
Fender Musical Instruments Corporation acquired Guild Guitar Company in 1995. Guild's plant manager at the time, Willi Fritscher, called the acquisition "a home run for Guild". In 2001, Fender moved Guild production from Rhode Island to its Corona, California factory. In 2004, production moved again to Tacoma, Washington, and then to New Hartford, Connecticut. In 2014, Fender sold Guild to the Cordoba Music Group, which is now owned by Yamaha. (wiki)
I didn't even know Fender bought Guild. I got one of their all mahogany acoustics a couple years ago, and I just thought it was cool that it was made up the road from me. Yes, I bought new. I'm sure you're right about the value of new v old but... keep in mind you know a lot more than most people. I've had terrible luck with used stuff. I got a Strat once, and months later I realized all the inlays were off center. The price definitely didn't reflect that. Not even sure how it made it out of the factory.
@brad the guitoligist - in your opinion, what is the best tube amp i could by for under 700?...just for playing at home..if you could help, thanks..even somewere you could stear me would be helpful..love the channel
Not an easy answer. Lots of right answers, lots of wrong answers. Look for a used amp you like the tone of. Like I said in one of my Dallas videos, stuff people sleep on like a $375 Traynor Studio Mate is hard to go wrong with. Fender Silverface amps are a good source of serviceable amps that sound great, if you can find someone who doesn't suddenly think they're gold-plated. Some of those Crate Vintage CLub amps punch above their weight. If you can keep them serviced, they're great. The old x-series Carvins are good sounding amps, but they're almost 45 years old now. Most will need some service too. Bottom line, learn to service amps and you'll have a much larger pool to choose from in that price range.
Past week i was looking for a guitar for a jazz rockabilly proyect. I was trying to make my mind up between an epi wildkat and a dot 335 . I got to a good deal for the dot ,the seller was a "girl" (who even called me up to convice me) i went to her place, and was a crossdresser! I bought the epi anyway. But the dude asked me to invite him a dinner, wich i declined. Am happy with my dot anyway
I have not been able to sell any thing on market place. Just a lot of dumb questions that seem like bots. I just removed it all and gave up on it. Is it real?
Hey Brad I heard you say that Sigma guitars are NOT Martin's.Well from what I understand is that a Sigma (MARTIN) is what Squire is to fender,Epiphone is to Gibson, just a budget model so these company's can sell more guitars.Try doing the blind fold test and see if you can tell the difference, Martin ,Sigma.I think you'll find it hard because the Sigma IS actually a Martin. You have both so do a video.
My brother tried selling some items through FB after he got out of off-roading, however all the responses he got were from folks who didn't have the money and asked if he was willing to trade, or were counter offering next to nothing. I found it amusing because off the horse trading and dickering for items already marked low to sell them.
300 for that strat? Frets were changed. That's a steal. Paid that for mine way back in the day played and modded it beyond recognition alder body the system one trem stayed in tune perfect Alaway.s . That guitar is worth a. Lot. More.. I'm jizzin my pants. Took me many years to find a comoerable playing guitar. It cost me 80 dollars. Artist series. Tone and neck spit on that was and still is a killer guitar.
For me, Hands Down, Brad the Guitologist makes the most interesting and entertaining guitar and amp content on TH-cam.

Marketplace in my area never has this kind of stuff unfortunately. Or maybe fortunately as I would be buying lots I do not need!
Thanks again !!!
Marketplace has turned Craigslist into a ghost town and it's kind of a shame. At least with Craigslist I didn't get posts from Lancaster, Michigan while looking for deals in a 50 mile radius of Athens, Georgia. So annoying.
Craigslist still has stuff on there. Worth looking in my area. That's where I found the Kramer.
@@TheGuitologist Around here it really sucks. Especially for motorcycles.
Sounds like you did well.
@vincemcman4086 yeah I agree been trying to sell it for months now.. but they said they had like 40 pairs of strings on hand in their warehouse. So they have the upper hand.. but yes it was a pain.. super happy with the fender contemporary.
👍...oh yeah...i remember the gorrila..,we had to work our ass off to get a decent tone....
Wait, Glenn was shit talking our gun laws while having an SMG logo?
I mean, no one ever accused him of not being a moron.
Resist offering the airbrush signature man a price minus the paint work and signature it makes em angry
Miss ya. ❤ thanks for you're RANTS😂
Nice 70s TV idea Brad !!! Stay heavy!!!!
People in New York, Florida, and California are HIGH. I hate marketplace out here in California because people think their shit is worth millions of dollars.
1:11:51 Never understood this. It's 10x better to just jam tooth picks in the hole and re-screw it on site at a gig than to butcher a new hole
(wiki)
Never buy anything with whiteout on the serial number sticker FRAUDULENT
I didn't even know Fender bought Guild. I got one of their all mahogany acoustics a couple years ago, and I just thought it was cool that it was made up the road from me. Yes, I bought new. I'm sure you're right about the value of new v old but... keep in mind you know a lot more than most people. I've had terrible luck with used stuff. I got a Strat once, and months later I realized all the inlays were off center. The price definitely didn't reflect that. Not even sure how it made it out of the factory.
Wow! Off center inlays? That's a cockup.
Fender sold off Guild around 2008 or so.
@@TheGuitologist I totally get it's not an easy answer...i can def work with that info..thanks bunch for the help!
Who doesnt want bill cosby grinning at the audience at a gig ?
I have not been able to sell any thing on market place. Just a lot of dumb questions that seem like bots. I just removed it all and gave up on it. Is it real?
I sell lawnmowers quickly and easily.
@@TheGuitologist Thanks for that info
@@TheGuitologist i got a old mower i will give it a try
Depending on the year, the Stagemaster was built by Larrivee too.
I think Reverb is just an online guitar museum. Everything's priced not to sell.
I scored a pignose g60vr mint condition for $150 on market place in Georgia
😂 @43:40 those twin 2 are the last hand wired Fullerton amps .
Everyone that asks me about an affordable USA made guitar, I tell them to find a Kramer or Hamer, both can be got pretty reasonable right now
Great advice. Or look for an 80s BC Rich STIII.
Brother, I agree with you.I like old school kramers and I like the music yo kramer's believe it or not
I love my line 6 ax2 and even my stage right, who needs tube's
Univox guitar! Only used in 3 bar fights!
My Harmony Guitar has the same bridge and where the strings are placed cheap Chrome cover not too bad you can get those parts from Ace Hardware
My brother tried selling some items through FB after he got out of off-roading, however all the responses he got were from folks who didn't have the money and asked if he was willing to trade, or were counter offering next to nothing. I found it amusing because off the horse trading and dickering for items already marked low to sell them.
I rarely see any Westerly Guilds for sale anymore
300 for that strat? Frets were changed.
That's a steal.
Paid that for mine way back in the day played and modded it beyond recognition alder body the system one trem stayed in tune perfect Alaway.s
. That guitar is worth a. Lot. More..
I'm jizzin my pants.
Took me many years to find a comoerable playing guitar. It cost me 80 dollars. Artist series.
Tone and neck spit on that was and still is a killer guitar.
That bill Cosby guitar 😂😂who ever posted that must have been sedated 😂😩sorry that was terrible
Vibratone horns are used on machinery e.g. startup signal
I need that Cosby guitar in my life.
