Found a Marshall Amp in a DUMPSTER...Can We Fix It?

- In this video, we'll look at this Marshall guitar amp I recently found in a dumpster. It's not tube, it's a solid state MG100HDFX with digital effects. There is no output. We'll figure out why and follow my trial and error attempts at repairing it. Should be a fun one.

Similar thing happened to me. I bought a similar model “broken” Marshall combo for $10. It was a Guitar Center employee selling it. I found it was that same output chip. Those output boards and chips are notorious for failing. It was a cheap fix and I donated the amp to a kid who was learning guitar. Score!

Years ago, when the Earth was young, around 1995. Someone tossed out a vintage Ludwig drum kit that had been BRUSH painted.
I rescued it, painstakingly restores it to a beautiful natural finish and gave it as a birthday present to my best friend who was also my drummer at the time.

Some band gets done with their set at 2am, and starts unloading their gear... when they realize they're putting stuff in the alley behind the venue, by the dumpster... and brad lives in the area.
One of my co-workers with a City Street Dept. found a Guitar with case in a trash pile about 15 years ago. He put it in my office one morning and to my surprise I opened the case and there it was... a vintage Gibson Flying V with a broken neck ! It sat in my jam room for a couple of years, but one day my wife snuck it out of the house and took it to a guitar repair shop that fixed it for a hundred bucks and she gave it to me for Christmas. The Guitar is worth $1500....

First rule in electronics; if you don’t have the correct value fuse, always use a smaller value replacement. The fuse is supposed to blow rather than smoke the ‘protected’ components.
I threw out an M-Audio monitor which was buzzing like mad. My neighborhood mailman took it off my lawn, with my permission. Two weeks later, he tells me he fixed it by replacing two filter caps. Mr. Guitologist, you must have inspired a loyal following throughout the world.

One of the dudes in my subscription list gave a teary eyed farewell video because he couldn't get TH-cam to pay out enough. He hadn't figured out, after nearly 10 years on TH-cam, that YT pays like shit and that you have to arrange another income source.
That's amazing. It's awesome to see someone taking the time to fix, and even improve stuff like this in a world that throws everything away.
Cool . I found a 1973 Fender Bassman 50 on the side of the road someone threw away. Had all the vintage tubes 12x7, at7 and rca 5881 power tubes. Had to recap and rewire some of it but now it works great.
You could cover it in mud, hose it down and then replace every conceivable part.
Wire brush my man.

Don't forget to chop random wires, solder them back together and then mindlessly probe around with the multi meter! 😜
Maybe a create a noodle grill cover and paint it with a roller.

The Marshall MG 100 Watt series Amps are incredible bought a Marshall MG 100FX 2X12 Combo in 2009.. No issues at all with it love it
I'll say this for you man: you are tenacious. I mean, I'd have a hard time calling it quits on repairing almost any amp that I just found somewhere for free. That being said, I'm always far more excited to see you not only fix the issue, but walking us through your thought process as you diagnose the issue, AND communicating which tools you're using, why, anecdotes about prior repairs or quirks that some components/models might have. It's all so helpful, especially when someone brand new to a hobby or passion project, like me is watching. Like watching a skilled surgeon operate... while occasionally poking a part of the patients brain that makes them laugh. 😆

Brad, just to let you know , every time I watch you I think of my dad. He fixed electronics just like you. Machinest by trade .he taught me how to fish starters, alternators, engines,everything. He would always say if a human built it you can fix it. And if it was alien tech you can be reverse engineered.God bless you and your family.

It happens, I know someone that found a Harley Davidson from the 1920's in a dumpster (don't remember the exact year or model, this was about 30 years ago). Some builders where cleaning out a house from an old lady that had passed away. He rode past and saw the wheel sticking out the dumpster. Paid the guys a hundred bucks and took it. Restored it later......lucky bastard....nevers happens to me....

YES!!! This gives me a bright spot in this troubled world!
Two tips come to mind seeing you repair this:
1) If the faulty component (in this case the TDA chip amp) has already been cut off I find it much easier to just melt the solder on the remaining legs with the soldering iron and pull them out with a small pair of needle nose pliers. This way it's much easier to get the solder out once the legs are out and it's less likely to lift a pad with the desoldering pump.
2) If you don't already own one: An ESR meter is a good investment to check for bad electrolytics. Some electrolytics capacitors fail in such a way that the capacity on a normal DMM will still read fine but the internal impedance will act like a short circuit. You probably know this already. :)

I owned the combo version of this amp (100DFX) and it rocked! Unfortunately I had to sell it a couple of years ago due to needing money for bills. You scored a nice Marshall Brad!!! Love your channel!
They made an earlier combo version called the "250/DFX with 2 separate 50 watt output amps. true stereo efx.

Watching this in 2024 because my MG100hdfx just lost all output. The light still comes on but no sound. I will be taking it apart and diagnosing it because it got me through the crazy times of when you put out this video. I have fond memories of spending many hours playing through it while the world stood still.
See if the preamp part works by using the preamp out. If it works, then it's likely the exact same problem with the output board. I've seen replacement boards on ebay here and there.

Okay, Brother, I just have to share this one with you, Because I know you'll get it, and either laugh...or cry, or maybe both (you say you've given up trying to account for people). My morning coffee stop has a door leading to a hallway where the restrooms are (the restrooms are shared with the restaurant next door). On the door, directly above the door knob is a sign in big black block letters that reads, "TURN THE KNOB...IT WILL OPEN". When I asked the owner about this, she told me that the sign wasn't working when she had it at eye level.
I'm surprised some people even know how to pee.

I found a little version of this in a dumpster about a year ago. Marshall MG 10 CD. It needed only two things: the input jack needed to be re-soldered, and the transformer inside had worked loose and needed to be bolted back down. But all the nuts and bolts were rattling around inside. So, that was probably worth about $30 that I got for free. :)

My understanding of electronics is very limited, having completed a basic electronics course. I've done household electrical repairs and installation for decades, and replaced numerous electronic components min amps, guitars and other devices, but I'm fascinated watching a real pro like this. Kudos.

Marshall Valvestate, a very underrated amp. Always had its own sound even if it was unconventional. Many hard rock / metal records were done with it.
Umm this isn't valvestate
Some feedback: 1) check fuse, 2) check all the tops of the cylindrical capacitors looking for bulges, 3) smell the big transformer to detect a burnt varnish smell, 4) look for cold-solder joints, 5) check all high-powered connectors for evidence of arcing. When soldering or removing soldering-for Peet's sake-always use flux. When trying to remove solder like you did, smear flux over a braided metal sheath and apply heat to that and you bring it down to the pads (which also have flux). The braided metal will wick the molten solder off cleanly like you wouldn't believe, leaving the pads unharmed. Clean with alcohol and acid brush between desolder/solder events.
You need one of these: th-cam.com/video/Gwo3pEH7hUE/w-d-xo.html When you build your replacement board, it's important to gauge the wires so that they'll carry the same amount of power that the original board did. Look at the width of those +/- rails; I think you under-gauged those connecting wires (pretty sure).
So so so happy to see you saved this amp.

believe you? why not? in 1999 i was hanging around home and saw something familiar popping out of a dumpster, getting close i realized it was a guitar neck. i grabbed it and surprise: she was a Hagstrom Viking 1965 cherry transparent red. perfect in all his grace. it's my axe of choice still today. she very rarely gets out of my house, only if she can be all the time stuck to my hands.

Actually, these "crappy solid state" MG Series sound better than some of the $3,000+ "Boutique" tube amps on the market.
Scott Dunn No, they dont. No need to lie to others or yourself. If you personally prefer a MG that is fine, but what you said is not true. Have you tried playing a MG, a 2203, and a boutique EL34 next to each other?
@@Whydoyoureadme Chill. It was just a general statement. I play an early JCM 2000 DSL100. And what's a "boutique EL34"? Just because an amplifier is equipped with EL34's doesn't automatically mean it's a killer sounding amp.

You are quite a trooper and excellent PC board repairer. That was a great idea replacing a dual sided board with a bodged single layer board. You could find
a fault easier from the schematic that way. Dumpster diva amp saved! Two thumbs way up!👍🏻👍🏻

Excellent video! I had exactly the same amp, bought on ebay for not working/spares... (had been left at a theatre after a gig).
Paid about £38, took it home..didn't work. Fiddled about a bit and found that the main volume pot was faulty and left in a position where nil output existed... Had to take the main chassis out and remove the faulty pot (which was integrated) by deslodering. Worked ok after that. Thing to remember with these amps is that they MUST be connected to speakers otherwise there is nowhere for the power output to go when switched on, result..smoke!
I found that the effects on this amp good enough to eliminate the use of numerous pedals.
So glad to have you back - stay safe brother. I've got 3 GC Salvage locations in my area. Luckily only one has locked up the treasure trove. Biggest haul so far was over $400.00 in drum hardware still in the boxes. Seems like its all about timing tho

Those Marshall MG are not heavy sought after, because they have "not enough tubes" for some korksniffing tube afficionados.
To be honest, they have a place in heavy metal, not only because Chuck Schuldiner of Death played a MG series amp.
Some guitar channels checked the MG's out and found them not bad at all, if a reasonable priced amp with lots of gain and a brilliant high end with some sizzle (and maybe some noise) is what you are looking for.

Kong and Basses Chuck used the Valvestate, the MG’s predecessor.
MG is not what Chuck used nor is it a predecessor.
Chuck used two Valvestates, the 8100 and the VS100, exclusively, and that amp series was replaced with the AVT (Advanced Valvestate Technology) after that. These amps are tube and solid state hybrids with a single tube in the preamp section and had a unique voicing.
The MG is entirely different and was entirely solid state and marketed towards the entry level niche. The AVT was still around at the time and was intermediately priced at the time while the JCM were flagship models.
Watching this again 4 years later. I do wanna say Brad, i think those panels inside your car need some Pledge! 😂 You're awesome man!

Its an mg100, now i dont know about other place but where i live they are a dime a dozen. It may have been thrown out for that reason or it was probably thrown out because it was bad
It's literally horrible! lol! I've never heard that model and this one is just awful sounding. Waaaay too many knobs to begin with. We love Marshall's and we have quite a few bad ass vintage JCM 800's, Snakes, DSL's and VM's, but none of them sound anything remotely close to this garbage here. It's a cool find for sure and something to resell, but I could never imagine actually playing that in a band situation... Eeeek!!!

brad, the average person has no regard for good knobs. until you need one.
when i found my technics sa300 i had to replace illumination bulbs; when i removed the tuning knob the shaft was already cracked, it seems. that part stayed on and the knob came off in my fingers.
depth, shaft diameter, half or full circle lots of variables on knobs.
super glue and baking soda (learned that on stew mac channel) fixed my knob i had no choice since i could not find one to replace it.

I had a welder on my truck Yesterday and I was only about sixty miles south of you. I could have stopped by and sparked that stand back together for you.
Someone probably took their old amp in for a repair and was talked into a new one. In the dumpster this one goes.

An MG15DFX for £100 was my first amp (2002?) which died in a week on headphones. Returned and upgraded to 30W for +£30 and still use it. The volume would suddenly decrease, even after I fixed a few solder joints. Recently I got some Servisol cleaner and cured it briefly.
I got my Ibanez SA160QM back then, it always had a wonky tone pot and I broke the jack. I fixed it and finally did a setup last night.
I just bought an Ibanez SR300E last week in metallic red too. It sounds pretty good clean and with all the EQ knobs I figure don't need a bass amp.

We live in a society that when something breaks we just trash it. I have a dust buster, 2 actually, that the switches quit working. I just added in my own. Silly to throw away something that can be fixed. People can diagnose anymore, they are just parts changers. You followed the smoke and used your noggin and figured it out.

I'm actually a huge fan of this particular model, the MG100hdfx. I like the reverb a lot. Also I like the effects loop mix adjust!! Comes in handy for troubleshooting .. take out the effects loop without unplugging anything. I mostly use the clean channel in crunch mode... boost with a Tubescreamer. Plug into a quality cab with good speakers and it sounds great.
As soon as I saw "MG" I knew immediately that was why they tossed it in the dumpster. (kidding)
Yeah... you can get these used for $130. It was cool watching him get to the bottom of the issue, but it wasn't really worth his time and effort. However... there is value in the satisfaction that you fixed something.
Cheap as they are I think they sound pretty solid especially for a startup rig

I bought one of these nearly 15 years ago, within a matter of months I was onto my 3rd head due to fan issues. Years later it still runs like a champ, must have been a bad batch of these.
It is actually a pretty good amp if you just use it right. Crunch channel with the gain almost as low as possible with the volume as loud as you can bare.
Man if I could get lucky enough to find a Marshall in my dumpster that I could get to work like that...I’d be more than happy to self quarantine myself!!
That's incredible! Being totally honest I wouldn't bother to try to bring it to life as soon I saw that "digital FX' section. I immediately thought 'oh, sure, one of those craps' and I really doubt that he would make it work again. I am amazed.

I just saw this video brad , that is pretty dam awesome you find that Marshall mg100dfx head and repaired for a few dollars, have the same amp I guess if something goes wrong I can go back and watch the video and find the issue ,I really like your videos my dad was an electronics engineer for Burlington northern railroad he repaired alot of things from auto wiring to televisions I never really got into the electronics field however I did learn from my father and watching your videos makes me think of my dad he passed away a few yrs ago but the memories will always be there of him, thanks brad be safe and god bless

The FDD on Marshall amp's stand's for "Frequency Dependent Damping." It basically add's depth and make's it sound more like a tube amp.

A fine fix... our other guitarist used one of these 100w VST things at practice, ridiculously loud at a song writing session. I couldnt hear for 3 days after, melted my 60 yo face clean off.
I have a 75 watt watt one laying around. Really beautiful done...
I’ve had this same amp for 10+ years now! Never a problem, the distortion just wasn’t enough for me lately, moved up to a Metal Zone and a MXR Fullbore Metal!!!
ihate names the Fullbore Metal seems to be doing a great job, my Metal Zone is still a favorite, I only use for certain songs and solos now though...!

Best video I’ve seen in a long time! I was on the edge of my seat towards the end, lol! I have a special place in my heart for solid state guitar amps because I (like so many others) used them for years before being able to afford a tube amp. You are a great guitar player too, man!
I find these much more informative/entertaining than when you pontificate over the motives of private equity funds that have bought guitar companies or stores. My 2 cents. For this I will sub.
I repaired one of those MG Marshalls many years ago. As I recall it was also a failure of the amplifier chip TDA7293. Same overheated device but mine was due to a failure of the cooling fan. These chips run hot evn at idle with an average quiescent current of 75mA (~6Watts to dissipate) so a failed fan will kill the IC even though it is supposed to be thermally protected. I repaired mine by replacing/upgrading the fan and beefing up the heat sink by using copper and almost tripling the surface area. Okay now I must criticize your use of Chinese clone semiconductors. They are NEVER to the specifications of the original manufacturers. Do yourself a favor, spend the few extra bucks and buy legitimate parts from reputable distributors (DigiKey, Mouser, etc) and genuine manufacturers (ST Micro, etc.). Awesome playing!

Get a capacitor tester or a meter that can test microfarads, literally it will tell you if it's good or bad in 2 seconds based on the uf value on the caps, uf meaning microfarad
