    Good review, thanks. I have a 336 in 35Rem and handloads equal or surpass the 360 factory loads. The 35Rem was originally chambered in the old Remington auto loader and loaded to lower pressures than what modern leverguns can handle so it will never win the race when it comes to factory ammo. They both kill deer dead, so that is all that matter. If I did not already have my 35 Rem I would probably get a 360,

    I’m glad they are finally making more options for us straight wall states. I’d really like to see the difference between the 360 and the new 400 legend when it finally comes out.

    • @TargetSuite
      @TargetSuite  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That will be a comparison that a lot of people ask for. But since the 350 and 400 Legend cartridges headspace on the case mouth, they are not compatible with a lever gun.

      Just curious, what is the rationale behind straight wall cartridge laws?
      The reason I ask is I live in a state that doesn’t require straight wall cartridge rifles for deer hunting. However, several counties of the state are “shotgun counties” meaning you can’t use a rifle. And I hunt one of those counties.

    • @nelhead4807
      @nelhead4807 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@MDR-hn2yz I’ve always be told because they don’t want the bullets to carry as far as normal rifle rounds on flat land. Never did understand why they can’t separate counties like you said.

      @chadperry4021 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Both energy and trajectory, they are virtually twins. The difference is the 360 can be handloaded hotter than factory ammo. A bit hotter. 400 legend pretty much stays the same. But all load data for the 400 legend is AR compatible. Can the legend catch back up in a bolt gun? That answer may take a while.

  • @frankbrowning328

    I like Henry rifles and this one looks like another good one. The 360 is a great cartridge as it is just a little hotter than the legendary 35 Remington. I'd like to see a Leverevolution type bullet (Hornady) loaded for it. Those soft plastic tips bullets that are safe in tubular magazines would be a great fit for this cartridge. A 190-200gr pointed (soft plastic tip safe for tube mag bullet) design would offer additonal velocity at longer ranges. I hope the cartridge becomes popular.

    • @jfess1911
      @jfess1911 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I agree. The Leverevolution loads add at least 50 yards to the effective range (closer to 100y, really, but drop becomes a bigger issue). Sometimes that deer is just a little farther away than I would feel comfortable with traditional loads.
      Years ago I knew an old-timer who liked to brag that he shot a deer at a whopping 200 yards with his trusty 30-30. Had to aim over his back. People were impressed. These days with modern ammo, that might just prompt a "so what?"

    • @scotteger6271
      @scotteger6271 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      It’s always difficult with new cartridges at first. Remington Ammunition (under the same ownership as Federal/CCI/Speer) developed the cartridge in partnership with Henry. So you have some big names participating here.
      It’s kind of like 350 Legend, designed by Winchester but picked up by numerous ammunition manufacturers now. If that same thing happens with 360 Buckhammer then it’ll likely stick around. It’s still a little new and risky to buy, as it might fail…but it’s also a lever gun hunting cartridge. So if you bought the gun and it shoots the available ammunition well, buy a bunch of boxes and don’t worry about it.

    • @frankbrowning328
      @frankbrowning328 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@scotteger6271 All very true. I reload so if a cartridge doesn't become all that popular its not much of an issue except for the brass. If I can make the brass from something else that too is solved. My point is that I like to see a variety of cartridges for anyone to pick from. If a particular cartridge doesn't get popular enough it dies in the general public’s eye and eventually is discontinued. I like to see innovation in both guns and ammo. Unfortunately, we have a huge percentage of the shooting world that would much rather have 3 calibers to do most everything. a 5.56 rifle for most and a 7.62 X 51 (.308 Win) to hunt larger game + a 9mm pistol. While I like and own several of these I also have a great many other calibers I enjoy shooting.

    • @scotteger6271
      @scotteger6271 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@frankbrowning328 I don’t disagree with any of what you’re saying. The thing with cartridges like 350 legend, 400 legend and now potentially 360 Buckhammer, is that they were designed with a specific purpose in mind…state regulations/limitations on cartridges for hunting. The 350 and 400 Legend will be for those that want an inexpensive bolt action or possibly an AR…the Buckhammer is for lever guns…it just remains to be seen which states allow it…that will really dictate its success. Also, if a state like Illinois allows it, Henry would be smart to offer their single shot chambered in it, to cater to that particular states even more restrictive laws.

    That rifle looks very sharp. 360BH looks very nice from everything I've watched and read. I like how traditional the cartridge looks. The LGS told me they expect these "next year". No ammo on the shelves, not even at Walmart. George, could you maybe do a video on lever action scopes and mounting? I am new to optics but they are certainly a strong "nice have" for hunting. I see a lot of "compact" scopes with no expanded aperture, which look like a typical LPVO, but I'm not sure if they are the regular LPVO or if there's a purpose-built lever-action scope format. I guess it's logical that the eye relief and mounting height would favor a dedicated form factor. Not needing a cheek riser is also nice, although on a 45-70 anything that softens the impact is good. Thank you in advance.

      You obviously don’t live in a farm state with only rolling hills where a high velocity bullets can travel miles with nothing to stop it and in the days where those regulations were written there were often four or more farm residences on every square mile. When I lived in Iowa over fifty years ago it was shotguns only with slugs. 5he currently changing regulations are because with highly mechanized farming today there are relatively few residences on those open lands and the good ol’ boys in the state legislatures want to start using the same rifles they do on their out of state hunting trips.😂 With that said now there are really only a few states that require a straight walled cartridge with a minimum or maximum length. When they started allowing straight walled cartridges Iowa allowed 45-70 and 444 Marlin even though they exceeded the maximum length rule. Today Iowa no longer requires truly straight walled case. There is still a minimum 0.350” bullet diameter in cartridges with a published muzzle energy of 500 ft pounds in both rifles and hand guns. The maximum bullet diameter is 0.500”. They have a published list of some, but not all the cartridges that meet their specifications including 35 Whelen, 444 Marlin, 45-70 and many others. No magazine capacity limit or type of action restriction. 35 Remington is not on the list but easily meets the requirements with others such as 358 Winchester. If you want to use 358 Norma Magnum or 50 BMG you’re good to go. If you want to use your 30-06, 30-30 Winchester, 32 Winchester special, 243 Winchester or 6.5 Creedmoor you’re SOL. Indiana now allows only the small straight walled cartridges with maximum length on public land but about anything you can name on private property. I think Minnesota has different requirements in different zones. As of January 1, 2023 the Communist State of Illinois began allowing single shot rifles with bottle neck centerfire cartridges 30 caliber or larger with case length not exceeding one and two-fifths inches OR straight wall cartridges cartridges 30 caliber or larger. Both must have a minimum 500 ft lbs muzzle energy. Not going to be many Henry 360 Buckhammer sold there. Ohio allows any straight wall cartridge from .357 to .50. For those states that have the maximum straight wall length the Henry with the 360 Buckhammer will work fine if you can afford the rifle and find ammunition. For those others you might as well find a used 336 Marlin in 35 Remington for half the price. The Hornady LeverEvolution 35 Remington is going to shoot flatter and extend the range of the 35 Remington a good 50 yards or more over the Remington round nose Core Lokt . Remington is notorious for not meeting their published velocities. I lived and hunted deer in Mississippi, Iowa and now Kansas where we can hunt deer with any centerfire rifle.

    • @phillycheesetake
      @phillycheesetake 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@davewinter2688 The regulations have nothing to do with safety. The straight-wall rule is actually a loosening of muzzleloader season into "primitive" weapon season. Virtually all of the states which have a straight-wall rule have an open rifle season when you can use anything.
      IMO they should get rid of the exemptions and just have a strict muzzleloader/black powder season, with no modern stuff allowed.

    • @davewinter2688
      @davewinter2688 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@phillycheesetake You obviously don’t read very well or pay attention to what you’re reading. The subject of my comment was straight wall cartridges for deer in the upper mid west. I lived in Iowa and have followed the legislature for many years. If you look at many state DNR official websites you will see that the restrictions to shotguns only was because of population density, which is or was a safety concern. The only two states that I know of that allow the use of 35 Whelen and maybe some other cartridges in single shot rifles with exposed hammers are Louisiana and Mississippi during what they call their primitive hunting seasons. I do find that odd as I would never call a single shot rifle firing those cartridges a primitive weapon. Where I live now in Kansas we have very distinct separate bow only and muzzle loader only deer seasons. There is no so-called primitive weapons deer season. We can use long bows, recurve, compound or crossbows. Traditional or in line muzzle loader are allowed during those seasons. Muzzle loaders may be used during the regular firearms season if you have a regular firearms permit or unfilled muzzle loader permit from that season. There is overlap of the bow and muzzle loading season. As it works out, bows can be used during any of those seasons. We used to not allow scopes on muzzle loaders but I think that has changed. As a traditional muzzle loading hunter (Thomson Center 54 caliber Renegade) I don’t even consider the in line muzzle loaders as primitive weapons. You are right that it should be at least muzzle loaders only instead of that ridiculous “primative” season, but I was born in Mississippi and know how the Mississippi legislature works!

    Nice video, thank you. As I am getting into Cowboy Action Shooting, there are lots of folks that ask if the Henry rifles can be used for CAS. Often the response is, " Yes, but not if you are serious about doing well." Why? The lever action may be smooth but, nowhere near the "slick action" of the Winchester 1866, 1873 or 1892. The Marlin can also be made "slick". The next issue is capacity. You need 10 rounds to shoot a stage. Most Henry rifles hold less than 10 rounds. I did use my Henry Big Boy .357 Mag when I started but, had to reload a couple rounds to complete the stage which take more time. The big Buckhorn sights are also not good for CAS. Now, saying all that, I would like to see the rifle that Henry has produced for Cowboy Action Shooting, H012M41. Steel, 20" barrel, .41 Mag nice unit so that may work. They also make the 1860 which works for re-enactments but I've not seen anyone use it in CAS. Hopefully, they will send you a couple to show and tell!

    Thanks, George.
    I'm going to defer to you, the .35 Remington expert of record, for this. I don't own or shoot either a .35 Remington or a .360 BH, but my initial response was:
    It duplicates (or exceeds) the .35 Remington performance, it complies with various states' "straight wall case under 1.8 in. case length" hunting regulations AND will be more reliable in tube magazine lever action rifles.
    Rimless cartridges just are not ideal for reliable functioning in tube magazine lever rifles. Rimless cases are fine in box magazine lever guns (Savage 99, Winchester 1895, Browning BLR).
    I'm not aware of any other rimless cartridge chambered in tube magazine lever guns. (the .450 Marlin is belted) Winchester even put rims on its 7-30, .307 and .356 WCF cartridges. The .35 Remington was initially developed for the box magazine Remington Model 8 semi-auto to compete with the .35 Winchester. Marlin later adapted it to their lever action.
    I think Henry is wise to have BOTH forms of loading/unloading, tube and gate. You can unload more safely, as you demonstrated, AND the rifle can still be topped off with one or two rounds without disabling the rifle AND while keeping it pointed in a safe direction.
    I'll be glad to see your real world comparison video of the two.

    I haven't hunter dear in 20 years so I don't know if Michigan allows these straight wall rounds. In southern Michigan you were allowed only shotguns, buck or slug, and muzzle loaders. The reason for this was population density. They didn't want you cutting loose with a .270 or 7mag. This does make sense.

    As always, a good objective video George. 👍🏻
    Living in northern NYS, I can legally use anything from 25ACP to 50BMG and more. Centerfire and larger than 22 cal is what game regs call for here.
    That said, while I don't have a need for the 360BH, I do see the legitimate purpose for it and I applaud Henry and Remington for bringing it to market. It puts up some very respectable numbers for it's short case length. I maybe end up with one at some point even if I don't need one, lol!

    In my neck of the woods, I completely understand using straight wall cartridges. I live in a part of Ohio where people lived spaced apart but close enough where (some) necked cartridges can carry unnecessary risk. However, much of the southern portion and other portions of the state has no need for such a restriction. I really wish it was left to the individual counties. Since the law is state level, they don't have the opportunity to decide for themselves.

    Straight wall restrictions are silly. They are just as flat as 30-30. And other centerfire cartridges don’t shoot for miles. On flat ground, high powered cartridge will drop nearly the height of a man at 500 yards. Basically 250 yards more range than straight walls, muzzle loaders and shotguns. That’s in open area. In area with more cover, nothing is shooting through trees and brush. Knowing your target and what is beyond it, is way more important than cartridge selection.

    I gotta say, you seem like the kind of guy I could sit and talk to about lever actions for hours! I know it sounds like I dislike the new .360, but that's not the case. I love almost all cartridges. What I dislike is the thought of Remington/Henry effectively killing off one of my all time favorite gun/cartridge combos in the Marlin 336/.35 Remington. I'm still saddened by the passing of the .444 as well. I know now why my grandfather was so mad when I bought my .375 Model 94xtr back in the 80's, and my .356 about a year later. And even though I've still got them and have amassed quite a lever gun collection.....I still always go back to the .35 he bought me when hunting season rolls around.

    Nice hunts. I've wondered how the .360BH would compare to .35 Remington, seeing they both run the same caliber bullet. It's unfortunate that these anti-2A regs exist in the first place. I'm in an upper mid-western State and the northern half of the State allows rifle while the southern half only allows shotgun slug, muzzleloader, and handgun greater than .220 caliber. We also cannot allow pistols like Ruger Wrangler and Heritage Rough Rider due to material melting point temperatures (Saturday Night Special laws).
