    Very nice 👍! This aperture sight does look like it was made for this rifle looks very clean. The only thing I don't like is the BS dots on the aperture. All that is necessary is the aperture because all of your focus is on the front sight your eye automatically centers the front sight in the aperture. The dots are just BS in my opinion. Thanks looking forward to the next video

    • @TargetSuite
      @TargetSuite  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Brian. The aperture alone does it's job, no doubt. But check out my Instagram page targetsuite. I posted a picture of what the fiber optics look like (to my eyes). It's a pretty accurate picture of what I see. In the right light the faint glow of the two dots can be helpful. But I know, this sight won't push everyone's buttons. If the stars line up, I'll post another video of this rifle/sight combo next week, and do a lot of shooting.

    Hello:
    Thanks for letting me know about this additional sight-option.
    I like the side-protection offered to the peep-sight-aperture as provided by the side-rails more than the OEM's Skinner-Peep. Does the side-protective rail (the wall-channel) on each side of the peep aperture effect the amount of light required by the peep?
    Do you know if this sight will also fit the 1895 series of rifles, especially the 1895CB?

    • @TargetSuite
      @TargetSuite  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't think it affects the light. It does "frame" the sight picture, but it's not a negative for me. Thanks for the comment!

    Not to nit pick, but I think i would have put a couple flush mount set screws in the extra 2 holes in the top of the receiver to keep moisture out of the action where it could rust unseen. I think I also would have sprayed under the sight with a rust inhibitor before mounting just for a little insurance. Is that little hole in the sight for oiling?

    • @TargetSuite
      @TargetSuite  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, filler screws would have been great, but I didn't have any at the time. The little hole in the sight is there so you can push out the aperture assembly (when the sight is removed), handy if you damage the aperture.

  • @SWAMPHUNTER644
    @SWAMPHUNTER644 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I remember reading a gun magazine article about peep sights back in my youth some 50-60 years ago that said that the human eye automatically centered the front sight in the center of a circle. The front sight should be a dot style rather than a post to be most effective. Also does the cloverleaf actually interfere with the natural centering concept rather than enhance it? Should you change out the front sight as well to a fiber optic or gold dot sight? What color fiber optic is best? Would a front sight with a round hole to aim thru work better?

    • @TargetSuite
      @TargetSuite  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Those old gun magazines were right, the eye really wants to center. As for a front sight, I don't like the dots because at longer ranges if you center the dot you obscure the animal totally. As far as the cloverleaf, the detail washes out and it functions just like a round peep. I posted a video about that th-cam.com/video/sBUC6vwZhes/w-d-xo.html Enjoy!

      I have had instances where a good variable power scope is both a benefit and a curse. I would prefer a peep sight for less weight if I thought I could shoot as well. I have taken deer with my scope at 100 yds. that I might have missed with a peep and I once missed a deer at 75 with the scope cranked up to 7X when it failed to show a one inch sapling 10 yds. in front of the deer. I hit the sapling with a 12 ga slug on one side of the sapling and one inch lower on the opposite side and both slugs deflected without touching the deer. I was perplexed when the deer didn't move and didn't drop. I'm not sure I would have seen the sapling with a peep either.@@TargetSuite

    Looks fine. Question: Isn't the objective to using the "ghost ring" style rear sight to look "through" the ring and focus on the front blade? I've always been told this over the last 50 years of shooting with peeps. That being the case, why would you want dots and/or a reticle design inside the peep? Seems like those features would non-value added. But I could be wrong? I do like the style of this rear peep for the Marlin. I'm still looking at the Skinner however. Thank you!

    Best sight for any lever action. ALL my lever guns have either a peep sight or the original sights. Even my Savage Model 99, which is easy to mount a scope on, is set up with a receiver mounted peep. I never saw the sense of a light, slim, trim lever gun loaded down with a scope. The scope ends up right where you would hold the rifle for one handed carry. They are not long range or varmint rifles. Winchester tried that with the .219 Zipper and .218 Bee cartridges...didn't work.
    For what they are intended for, a peep sight is perfect! This one looks great and I am glad to see they are being made for modern lever guns.
    Now, take out the factory rear sight, put it in a little bag with a desiccant capsule and stash it in the rifle's box. Install a "dovetail blank" in the slot where it was.

      Hi Andrew. That's a pretty comprehensive question and too much for me to cover in depth here. But I will say that the .32 Special is basically a 30-30 case that is necked up to .321 caliber from .308. It is almost if not completely obsolete so if you want to shoot yours you will most likely have to reload and there is lots of info on that round in the major reloading manuals like the Lyman 50th edition. Good luck.

    • @TargetSuite
      @TargetSuite  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Now that I have had a chance to shoot with the RPP sight quite a bit more, I can say I really like it. For my older eyes, the cloverleaf completely washes out to just an aperture. But I can see enough hint of the fiber optic to help with quick target acquisition. And the biggest plus . . . it is super low profile and works with my factory front sight!

    I don't hunt, I predominately just target shoot. I also don't have the eyesight of a young man any more and have trouble with open sights. So I am thinking about adding a scope to my Marlin Cowboy 45LC. Again, considering just target shooting, what scope would you recommend?

    I need reading glasses, so I use peep sights because you look through them, not at them. So I wonder about this peep sight with reference points, I am not sure I would be able to even see them? If you have good eyes, it might be an advantage.

    • @TargetSuite
      @TargetSuite  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That geometry washes out to the average eye and just presents a "round" aperture. But you can see a hint of the fiber optics on either side. With the right light it is very helpful.

    Not familiar with the cloverleaf aperture, what is the advantage over the standard aperture? Speed? Sight picture?

    • @TargetSuite
      @TargetSuite  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Sidney. It's not so much about the shape of the aperture. Younger eyes might be able to see and use the cloverleaf geometry but for mature eyes it will mostly fuzz out. But, in the right light, the eye can center between and line up with fiber optics. They are not sharp but even the suggestion of the color on each side of the front sight helps me a lot. The other advantage, which has nothing to do with the shape of the aperture, is that the design keeps the aperture low to the rifle and, at least with the 1894, allows you to keep the standard height front sight. I hope that helps.

    So, I was really happy with the RPP sights for the 44 but not so much for the 357. Just couldn't get the shots (elevation) down enough for 60yrds. Couldn't see what I was doing wrong. On another note, I just got a new 1895 in 45-70. that 4 now. .357, .44, .444, .45-70. I still need to get the 444 fixed for the lever Jam issue. Is there one part that needs to be replaced for that?

    • @TargetSuite

      Hi Phillip. You are probably not doing anything wrong. Your front sight is just too short on that 357. It happens. You'll just have to order a new taller front sight. If you want a fiber optic, RPP makes a real nice one. If not, Skinner and others have standard blade or partridge style front sights. As to your 444, it may be the carrier assembly. Just the carrier is available from Numrich, but I didn't see a a full carrier assembly with rocker. But without close inspection I can't really say for sure what's up. Good luck!

    The sites are always a personal choice, and what works best for me is a zero magnification circle dot. A one and a half inch group might not sound too accurate, but it's all going to come down to what you're shooting at. A deer won't know the difference. Dead is dead. That being said. There has to be something going on with the rifle and or cartridge selection. That rifle was not made for 180 grain according to the manual I used to own. 240's were the only bullets the manufacture recommended, and no full lead cast bullets. That may have changed. My best performance factory ammo for that rifle were Remington 240 grain SJHP with Federal or CCI Lawman coming in second. PMC was dead last for me but your milage may vary.

      Nope. Let's say, I'm experimenting 😉 Skinner says no to Loctite. RPP says yes. I'll see if anything comes loose without it. I did have one fella say he'd never watch anything else I did because I left off the Loctite. BTW, I love your channel name. Been there, in 1971. Had KP everyday at an officer's mess waiting to be deployed. Needless to say, between the red dust and KP that's not my favorite place😄

      Things have definitely changed. The airport at VungTau where I wound up is now a commercial airport and the vacant beaches across the dunes look like Cancun.

      I'm hoping the "new" Marlin will spit out some great 1894's because I sure want one back in my closet.

    Marlin really should be ashamed of that shitty lever loop they put on their rifles.
    Especially since a replacement medium loop is $140.00 plus shipping.
    What a rip off. If you have big hands (like me), the factory loop is nearly useless.

    • @TargetSuite
      @TargetSuite  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Since I was a teenager I have mostly been a three finger guy . . . pinky below, not inside or behind the lever. So, the big loop phenomenon is lost on me. But like a lot of things like this, it's just what I am used to (personal preference), and probably more guys prefer the larger loops. Thanks for the comment!

    It's pronounced "lever".

      I have ancestors that may have been from England. Maybe that's why I say "lever" sometimes😉

      Hi Peter. The Skinner Express, which is Skinner's full length sight is $90 and with it you have no choice but to replace (and hand fit) a new taller front sight that costs $15 from Skinner. On the other hand, the RPP sight works with factory front sights. So, the RPP is only $5 more and you don't have a new front blade to fit or worry about because it is so tall.

      Mine too . . . apart from the times a scope makes the most sense. But most of my shooting is with a peep of some kind.
