- Apple ProRes LOG on iPhone 15 Pro Max tutorial.
Apple LOG is a killer feature of iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max for video shooting. Apple LOG reduces horrible over-sharpening of the iPhone video footage, Apple LOG gets rid of annoying tone mapping feature and also lowers the noise reduction, which helps get image with less artifacts. In today's video we are going to have a look at how to expose Apple ProRes LOG in standard Camera App and in free Blackmagic Cam App, how to set white balance in Apple LOG, which codecs support Apple LOG in BlackMagic Cam App, which LUTs are the best to work with Apple LOG, how ISO effects your zebras and False Color settings, Apple LOG dynamic range, how to color correct Apple LOG straight on your iPhone, color correction of Apple LOG with and without LUTs in editing software on your computer, emulating film with Apple LOG and Dehancer Plug-in and is Apple LOG workflow that hard? Enjoy watching - iPhone 15 Pro Max Apple ProRes LOG video workflow tutorial!

coolest tutorial!

I personally think the best way to do it is to use Color Management (or Color Space Transform nodes) in Davinci Resolve, guaranteed to start with a mathematically accurate image, can convert it into a working color profile like ACEScct or Davinci Wide Gamut, it's basically automatic, so it takes no time at all. Much better than using LUT's because there is no interpolation, and you can make decisions on tone and gamut mapping.
You can then match different cameras really well, apply creative looks on top of a trustworthy image, and apply a more professional workflow to it (if you use it on a job or something).
I 1000% agree with you. It's odd that no one has made the tutorial on what you are describing.
this phone is insane! 🔥iPhone 15 Pro Max probably the best and the most powerful smartphone this year!
Apple always did a very good job. that pushed me and my friends switching from Android to iOS
After checking Phantom LUT's explanation about the LUT provided by Apple, I have to agree that the colour shifted, mostly blue and brown. I ended up using Leeming LUT.
Thanks!!! Do you have any other videos especially for beginners? I like the way you simplified a lot of the instruction and after watching many many videos, I’ve learned more from this one than any of the rest.
Thanks) I think this one is the closest to beginners I have 😅
Thank You!
Best channel ever
Thank you so much)
That’s awesome I didn’t know the blackmagic app allows you to record apple Log in H.265 that’s a game changer
Thanks) agree)
Unfortunately, the free version of Davinci Resolve does not appear to edit 10 bit H.265 videos, at least not in Windows, and it imports the audio only in my experience. You can save the H.265 file to Photos and edit it on the iphone 15 pro however.@@NOlimitsON 10 bit

¡Muchas gracias!
@@NOlimitsON Esta espectacular tu video, me suscribo. De casualidad tendras algun LUT pero como estilo cine?
Hey man this is the best tutorial so far on shooting log with the new iphone 15 thanks so much for making this, I have one question, the apple conversion lut you have in the download, is that the official one from Apple they released, I saw it somewhere on the developer page but cant find it anywhere anymore or is that one you made?
Hey) thanks a lot! Yes, it’s an official apple’s lut)
Nice video I like how the end result looks, LOG rocks and yeah at least there is no limitation for the storage, so LOG is there also on the 128 GB version?
But of course you need an external SSD or something..
Thanks) to be honest I don’t know about 128gb version and highly suggest picking up 256gb at least
Thank you for a great video. Just what I need. Do you have a link for buying the frame for mounting the iPhone and hard drive to shoot video?
Thanks)) no… I don’t have a link… it’s out of production
I have read that using the Apple LUT adds back all the over sharpened look most are trying to avoid by shooting in LOG. Can you confirm that? Will color grading in iOS Photos app help avoid Apple’s over sharpened output too? Great video - thanks a million!
Hey) thanks! LUT has nothing to do with sharpening) it works only with colors and latitude
One of the best post (this one and the previous) regarding the LOG in the Iphone! Question: You mentioned the Iphone can shoot H-265 and Log at the same time...? is that correct...? Also: is there a dehancer for Iphone & Ipad...? if so: does it have the same features and assume is a bit cheaper ? or same price? Thanks! cheers!
Hey! Thank you so much! Yes, you can shoot in h.256 and LOG at the same time (that’s what I did for the most part in this video). Yes, there is Dehancer for iOS - here is my review of it - th-cam.com/video/05SMsAH1lwM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=grtHxHtVNGhx8T5v
The sharpness and to e mapping wouldnt be a problem if we just had SETTINGS in the camera app...
Nicely explained in video about log i want to ask is there any app we can edit log video in iphone like capcut or something like currently i don't have desktop :)
Hi! Thanks! Yes, you can use VN app
A really nice video, well explained....but when I change the settings of the iPhone itself, the blocking and the colors and all that...does it lower the quality of the picture?....because I have a OnePlus and when I change the settings, it lowers it significantly The quality of the image...if I had 6000X8000 then it drops it to...3072X4096 more or less...I'm glad for the answer and thank you very much.🙏
Thanks)) no, the quality stays great)
Hi, I have a question. How can import Apple Log h.265 files in Davinci? I have a sound but, no video itself in the timeline. And I have the appropriate codec for h.265, but it still doesn't seem to work with Apple Log?
I don’t work in DaVinci, to be honest, so I can’t tell…
So I’m looking at potentially upgrading my phone.. is the overall ‘video quality’ on the standard camera app far better than say the 13 pro max? I’m interested to know as I make TH-cam videos with my 13 pro max.
Hi! If you are going to be using LOG on the 15 Pro - the difference will be huge. But if not - I see no reason to upgrade
Do you know if it is possible to film directly in the native camera app on the 128GB iPhone 15 Pro with an external SD card attached? Or is that also blocked? Not sure if the 256GB is in my budget :(
I think yes, but you need to test it first
really really helpful! Could you please activat the option to save it in my favorite lists, so I do not loose it . I subscribed of course, but after a short time it is hard to remember where this helpful guy was ;-) How do you transfer the videos with a cable instead of airdrop? I don´t get it. I am always landing in the iphone ecosystem in finder and cannot find the clips
Hi! Thanks) I just plug in the SSD to iPhone and Crete a new folder and transfer all the files there. Or you can do it straight from iPhone to computer - it’s pretty simple 😉
@@NOlimitsON if I plugin my phone to the computer, I just can use the typical Apple structure, but no folders where to find the pics or videos
very detailed video, thank you! I was wondering if you still need a 256gb iphone 15 pro to record in 4k 30fps without external ssd with bm app, or will it work on 128gb if i use the blackmagic app.
Thanks! Im not sure… I’d anyway go for the 256gb model
@@NOlimitsON no problem, new subscriber by the way!
@@snowball1792 thanks mate))
you can record in ProRes 30fps on any iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max, there is only one restriction in the native app, which is to record 60fps, you have to use an external ssd, that is the only limitation. BM Camera has no restrictions whatsoever. You never need an external SSD to record ProRes
@@MaximoJoshua great !
APFS or ExFat ? What is the disk's recording format?
My SSD was formatted for MacOS extended journaled - works great. Also I used and SD card formatted in ExFAT with a usb-c card reader - also works flawlessly
I have to have a yandex account in order to download the footage, but when sign up, it always gave me error. Can you upload the footage to google drive or dropbox? Thanks
Try another browser mate, safari should allow to download files one by one
May i have question please?
Do we need a SSD or we can use another one like SD? Coz when i take a record use SD, the video result is lagging or broken. Is it because i dont use SSD?
It’s because the SD card isn’t fast enough, that’s why the SSD is more stable and preferable - because of the faster speeds.
i got the 15pro 128gb and it doesn't let me shoot in 4k ProRes on the apple camera app (obviously i'm fine in the blackmagic app, can shoot pro 4k there) - but you're able to film in 4k ProRes on the app without an external hard drive, correct? Do you have the 256gb version?
Yes, that’s a restrain of the 128gb version
I have a 512gb version
how come whenever i turn up my contrast all the way up after filming in apple pro res log , it makes it look black & white is something wrong with my camera>?
No) you just need to boost up the saturation as well!
When i film a video on my iPhone 15 Pro in LOG and i want to transfer it with usb cable to my Macbook with the Photos App it takes years.. Is there any solution??
Get a faster cable) I’m sure it’s because of a slow cable
thanks for your quick answer. i use the orginial usbc cable from apple do you think i should get another one from amazon or?@@NOlimitsON
Hi thanks for the video! I cant download your footage from the platform in your link. It is in russian and also there is some problem when I want to download)
Check the description in half an hour
Done! thanks a lot! I'm going to do some tests if that works I let you know@@NOlimitsON
this luts work on premiere?
Sure
Does anyone know the difference in the first three LUTs on his download link. Seemed like they are named “alister “ then version 1,2,3. No clue the difference tho?
The difference is in the exposure - minus 1,2 or 3 stops of exposure 😉
@@NOlimitsON thank you so much!!
Log is not for HDR?
It is, but can also be used for SDR.
It's possible also with Samsung s23 ultra?
No
I could download the LUT coz I don’t understand Russian language
This LUT should be available for free on apple website)
FYI unfortunately (I guess) you really don’t want to use apples excellent adjust tools in the camera app for grading. Why? Because you can’t export to HEVC from there anyway so you’re gonna have to drop those files into an editor anyway. And when you do, import times will be DRAMATIC due to the edits you did to the color. You’re better off grading in your editing app. On device CapCut is more stable, faster import and export and has more features than LumaFusion. Only problem is it’s garbage to do actual cutting in, compared. And it doesn’t have LUTs on mobile which is annoying. Pros outweighs the cons tho imo. Speed is key.
Didn’t get your point)
Just curious, why are you purposely washing out the original video so much?
I’m not washing out) it’s the ungraded LOG footage)) you can download some sample from my link in the description and check it yourself 😉
Why lock white balance?
Because if it’s gonna be constantly changing you’ll be really struggling with color correction in post
@@NOlimitsON thanks!!!
Где-то изучал английский или сам как-то?
Привет) на русском канале своем в 2020 делал ролик на эту тему даже) если в двух словах, то больше сам)
Warning:make sure turning on the log in the settings while hdr switched on at the same time, or you will get 8bit log wrapped in a so called apple log which is not a true log ,giving you terrible results when you color grading on the computer
U cant use HDR and LOG at same time man, what u saying???
@@MrVh78🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@MrVh78yes but u can’t get a real 10bit log when you set hdr off in your settings (not on the interface of the cameras liveview ) until you turn the hdr on in the system setting to toggle the hdr on, which will give you true 10bit log, you can view it in davinci resolve
@@vebrucevebruce369interesting. Though it shows a proper 10 bit file when i bring it into FCP and it feels like a 10 bit file since i color only 12/10 bit footage. Are you sure it’s only a 10 bit container?
@@hemantverma9899 I second this question. My test footage in Apple Log with HDR off shows 10bit and it looks great. Curious to see a source where Apple Log with HDR turned off is just an 8bit log. Not doubting you, just never heard this out of all the dozens of Apple Log tutorials I've seen.
Hello there! Can you please suggest other apps where I’d be able to color grade log on the iPhone itself? Besides in Photos app and Lightroom
Hey) there is one free it's called VN
@@NOlimitsON thank you for the info!!!🫶🏻
