    In the "camera" tab of the settings, I would recommend changing the Shutter measurement from "speed" to "angle". Then back to the main screen, for "shutter" select 180°. Then you are sure to get the right shutter speed no matter your fps and don't have to worry about changing it.

    Anywhere I shoot, inside or outside it's way too bright at 1/48 shutter with an iso at 1250 ISO unless it's nighttime another isn't any light but with any sort of lighting it's way too bright. Does increasing the shutter speed somehow compromise the dynamic range? I assume the only thing that affects the dynamic range in this example is the ISO and the shutter can be anything above 1/48.

I dont have a 15 pro only a 13 pro iphone so no apple log. but if i record like you say and i lock the shutter speed yes the iso stays locked but i have found that in the settings as mentioned you are able to adjust the iso by selecting the exposure button (round circle with + / _ ), the bracket control i guess.
    I understand the part that to get the best hDR you want to have the iso set high but would this not cause a lot of grain.

      The only downside of H.265 is that it plays slow in editor apps. I work in DaVinci Resolve and what I do is grade the shot first. Then when I want to play it back, I set the Timeline Resolution to Half Resolution and it plays back at 24fps. If you don't have Resolve, I would think you would have a similar choice in the editing app you use.

  • @digitaldevigner4080
    @digitaldevigner4080 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +21

    I do not agree with the ISO 1250 advice at all. The iPhone quality really suffers when you raise the ISO. Even if you may not see noise its because the camera uses very aggressive noise reduction which leads to very blotchy details and mush. Yes it lifts the clip point so you get more highlight stops but you destroy the fidelity of the video by doing so.
    It's much better to shoot under exposed like everyone else is suggesting. Apple log maps a ton of stops below middle gray and only 3 stops over middle gray. By shooting under by just 2 stops we now have 5 stops over middle gray or much closer to other log formats. Some of the best log formats typically only have 6 stops over middle gray. While shooting under is typically not the best choice the way the iPhone and Apple Log work there is a ton of detail in the shadows and it is much cleaner to shoot under vs using ISO 1250. You still get a lot of highlight range if you need it but much cleaner details.
    Plus one really needs to determine if they really need that many highlight stops of range. Getting 6 stops over middle gray only to crush it down to rec709 is kind of pointless. Log formats are not a one size fits all format. They are made so we can choose what is more important for the shot. Shadow stops or highlight stops. Sort of like how the BMD Pocket cameras work. ISO is used to determine how the stops are mapped under vs over middle gray. Apple Log at lower ISO levels clip sooner in the highlights but thats because more of the stops are mapped in the shadows below middle gray. The details 99% more likely to be seen and have importance to the story.
    Another reason ISO 1250 is not a good suggestion is because a lot of narrative work tends to be lit to be lower contrast and fit much better within a limited rec709 range. We rarely have details that go over 90% reflectance and just don't need a lot of extra highlight stops. They become pointless and a large throw away portion of the log curve values. Apple Log as it is is well suited for this since it easily covers a normal contrast range for rec709. Shooting at ISO 1250 would not really gain anything extra and what it did gain would likely be thrown out.
    Dynamic range is nice to have but not at the expense of sacrificing everything else important just to say you have more stops of range. Those stops need to serve a purpose.
    Finally ISO 55 outdoors in bright sunlight and 24p 1/48th already requires at least 7 stops of ND filtering. If shooting two stops under thats 9 stops of filtering which is a lot. Shooting at ISO 1250 is almost 5 stops more ND filtering needed. Thats at least 12 stops of ND filtering which is an insane amount. Its hard enough finding a decent filter system for the iPhone and a real challenge trying to use 12 stops of filtering.

    Extremely useful tutorial, thank you! So many out there that don't explain the quirks of exposure in BMC, but you did a really good job.
    Here's a question: Why do you think there's no "AUTO" option in ISO? I wish I could lock the shutter speed for motion blur, but then have ISO be the wildcard that it uses for auto exposure. I don't see why that couldn't be an option, with an [AUTO] button at the top so you could disable it and go full manual.
    Maybe there's some expsure-triangle reason why it's not possible that I'm not thinking of... Do you know? Or should we be lobbying BM to update it 😅
    (my ND filter and Neewer mounting cage are on their way. Like you say, I don't WANT to rig it up, but it does look like it's simply necessary to use filters, just like it is on all but the most outrageously expensive cinema cameras)

    Should you still use 1250 in a lower light situation? I filmed something recently in 4k 30 log, in a dark room with just a ring light illuminating my subject, with my iso around 450 and it came out way over exposed. If it's more of a night situation where should you put the iso?

      You know I have the same thought. I shot in a 30% lit room with natural light peeking through the window and I can see a lot of noise in mids and lows. Yes I shot in prores apple log. Could it be the 13mm lens? Do the other lens have less noise?

    Matt I am very new to video recording. I am going to create how to videos (online training videos) inside and some outside you mentioned in this video that you can almost just get as good quality with the stock camera settings. Could I use this for my online training video suite without having to use LUTS and Davinci etc...I don't mind hooking up a external HD...thanks Matt and great video.

      Hey! You may need to reformat the external SSD. Try using exFAT

    Any tips for shooting log via black magic in high light snowy mountains (I’ll be in Alaska) ? I did just get the polarpro nd case/filter for the 15 pro. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated as I’m very new to shooting in log

    Hi Matt, long time no speak. Hope you are well and Happy New Year. Great Video, as I knew you would be the one who could answer all my questions having recently invested in an IPhone 15 Pro Max. I have one question, which may be a dumb question, but I will ask anyway. Whatever the "tint" value is when you lock your WB, it stays at that number. Do I need to be in a certain lighting situation to lock the WB at say 5500 for the Tint to be correct, or does it not matter? ie: I could lock WB at 5500 indoors where the Tint would be say -17 and when I go outside it will be fine and because it is log this won't matter as I would correct it in post? OR .. should I be going to the situation first ie: outside, lock my WB at 5500 and the tint will be correct at the time of locking? Hope that makes sense .. I just don't want to go out and film a load and find the tiny screws it all up in post ! :) thanks.

      @whoismatt  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks Paul! I would recommend adjusting the tint by unlocking and relocking the white balance to make sure things don't look too green or magenta.

    ProRes 422 is easier to edit on intel macs especially if you edit multicam or tend to export back and forth for effects and colorgrading. ProRes gives you a smooth playback experience and no destruction when color grading or VFX.

    Fantastic content as usual. But, I must be missing something. I did a test shoot today with full sun outdoors and with these settings on iPhone15 Pro max: ISO/1250, fps/30, shutter/60, fstop/1.8 (fixed), ND filter cranked to max (ND2-ND32 (1-5 Stop). I couldn’t get the exposure low enough. 🤷🏻 I had to lower the ISO to 55

      im having the same problem, even just shooting indoors with regular ceiling lights on, iso 1250 is way too high although no zebras show up. But trying to make it look normal in post still was a no go. Feel like im missing a step here

    Learned filmmaking decades ago . Trying out youtube now just for a reason to make content and be better day to day. My viewers waiting for a camera test and last time when went to the Alpens to get some epic shot took my big ND with me. Almost scratched them just like hold them in front of my 15 pro max. Thanks for the PolerPro link! I really appreciate it
    I think rig out a phone is stu**id but for hiking in the sommer time. Worth it for me with this case!
