This subject is so overlooked, but Alberto 'Professore' Naska has brought this very important fact to out attention. My Power Cup 2s are stored correctly and my bike on stands in the garage. Interesting fact about those Metz slick TDs not needing warmers. Thank you Professore👍🏻😉
Just bought a rear tire for my 2012 ninja zx6r, Bridgestone bt016 and when I got it I saw the tire is almost 4 years old to the day. It was stored in a climate controlled shop and still looks and feels brand new. Going to have installed today. Tire probably won't last a year anyway so no worries about it expiring. These are all great tips. Many people have followed misinformation when it comes to this topic.
Two questions: 1. If you have tyre warmers already, should you use them on Metzeler TDs? Some forum posts say that they get to greasy after warmers. Does Metzeler have any recommendation in this topic? 2. If you have used K1 and K2 on rims and the bike is on stand, are they safe in garage in temperatures below 0 if they are not touching or being touched by anything?
One more thing: most tires have a red dot on the side of the tire. This is the lightest point of the tire and should be around the valve. This way the tire is more in balance since the valve is normally the heaviest part of the rim.
I throw my empty rim on the balancer to find the heaviest point on the wheel. Sometimes that is where the valve stem is, but quite often it is not. So, I mentally mark that heaviest spot and put the red dot there.
ho visto questo video sia in Italiano sia in Inglese, grazie Naska, oltre aver scoperto la mia passione per i motori con te, mi insegni anche l'inglese, grazie😂
Thanks for the video! There is a color dot on the side of the tyre. Is this the heavier or the lightest part of the tyre? I can see the my OEM tyres mounted by the factory have the color dot near the valve. Best Regards Owe
Also! The four numbers on the side of the tyre indicate the week and year. Example 3420 is the 34th week of 2020. I never know this until a few weeks ago.
If the tyre is older then 5yrs it doesn't necessarily expire but the rubber sorta kinda looses it's properties and becomes harder and less gripper also there is a proper way to store tyres usually on a tyre rack and if you bounce your tyre once or twice it shouldn't break but if it does you can send it back and get a new one (they should always get you a new tyre especially if it's brand new DOT is usually idk 1122 11th week of 2022 year)
Hey, great video. One question though. I am an amateur, and very interested in the TD slick. But it sounds to me like you are repeating the metzeler marketing brochure for it. i would be really interested for you to drive them for a few turns and let us know how much performance lower compared to the K0/1/2 slicks!
I rode them this year. I ain't fast, mediocre rider in the fast group. And I love them. They compensate for temperature, while the pro slicks are really sensitive. They're the first tyre to last more then 3 trackdays and counting. I destroyed rear tyres within 1 or 2 days. No grip loss so far
@@TheTigerPGM I don't notice a difference, probably because I'm not capable of using the full potential of a full race slick. I rode the Dunlop d212 last year, which got eaten up in one day. And the d212 endurance, which lasted 2 days and was losing grip at the beginning of day 2. I was probably having some suspension issues, I bought the bike 2 years ago and I'm 15 kilo heavier the the previous owner, without changing the suspension. The TD has got about 20% left on one side and i can turn it depending the track. Still have no grip loss at all, even on one day with temperatures above 35 degrees. I fiddled a bit with the suspension set up, just a few clicks. The tyre is really compensating the poor suspension without falling apart. That's the real benefit of the tyre. It can handle different temperatures and bad suspension without getting eaten up, exactly like metzeler promises. I always use tyre warmers! Just try it, haven't found any negative reactions yet. @metzeler, feel free to reward me with a set of tyres just like naska probably got 😁
Alberto, if you had to change platforms , what bike would you race besides the R1? Why did you choose the R1 over other manufacturer 1000’s ? Keep up the great work.. be safe God Bless💪🏾💯
I would love more information about tire widths, aspects and heights, to use and what that would do to the bike geometry ect. Also more info about setting tire pressures hot versus cold ect. great video I love more technical bike videos it helps me increase my techniques.
Another important tire related topic is which compound to choose for which temperatures, asphalt condition, weather etc. There are many contradictings myths going around the pitlanes on free practices days (amateur events) and some are dangerous.
As long as you line up the valve stem with the tire mark for the valve stem, balancing your rim to compensate for your valve stem, then rebalancing again for the tire manufactureres weight compensation, will have you putting on weight only to remove it.... Or worse, putting weight on the opposite side. In any case during tires life or "wear" this will change anyway.
Thank you for superb video again. Only the cause of the blue spots was not accurately explained. This is caused primarily due to heat cycling. So even used tire can be without these spots. But it will definitely happend, if the tire is very hot and then cools down quickly.
I have a pair of Michelin Power Cup 2, last track day was in september, and they are very blue now... The more time pass, the more pronounced it become. Before that, I had Power RS, it was even worse. The blue color go away quickly though when riding, and I didn't notice a grip decrease. Maybe you notice it when you're more skilled than I am.
Thank you and very informative 💯👌🏼 If possible, can you do a video giving an idea on tyre pressures. I occasionally do a track day maybe once a year. Wanted your advise and input on the subject. Tyre pressures for: - road tyres used on track and road - track / road tyres on track and road - dedicated track tyres etc.
ok, I'm not that fast but I have one thing to say about tire balancing. it has to be vveeerrryyy far off to notice any vibrations through the bike. I was riding once and noticed a barely perceptible vibration, got it balanced and it came back with like two whole strips of weights on one end of the rim to make it perfect. also notice after a fast ride that the tires spin on the rim a little bit like 1/8th of a turn so it's impossible to keep it perfect if you are into that.
I have a Honda 2001 VTR 1000 Dunlap front and back the bike weighs 460 wet if I'm not mistaken and I weigh 190 any suggestions on tire pressure ? It would be greatly appreciated I am an aggressive rider
Time still kills tyres, even without use, unless you’re 101% sure how and where those tyres were stored. They will dry up eventually and will develop small cracks. We all want to save money, by be careful with used tyres. It’s always better to spend more on tires, not on a damaged bike or healing injuries. Stay safe! 🤙🏻
Thank you Alberto. I get knowlage about real race tires, especially when Metzeler is my own choose for my road bikes (MT-10, sv650). But on my small track bike, based on BMW G310, are still Pirelli Supercorsa SC2 tires. They don't want to wear out with such a small capacity bike. :-) I love them so much, even when cold. They have plenty of grip during breake and accelerate on straight, but i'm carefull at leaning it at that state.
Ciao from Russia Alberto. Thanks for another useful video. I see that you guys are racing Metz which has 0 popularity here. Everybody is on supercorsas and totally convinced that they are by far better than any other equivalent. We now can buy K1s and K2s as well and they are a bit cheaper. How do they compare to SC1 and SC2 in your experience? Are they worth a shot? I haven’t found any direct comparisons and nobody tried metz in the Russian super bike championship who can share their views.
bought a touring bike with 16 year old tires, the guy rode it with his wife across country four years previous, scary as it was dry rotted. So I rode it hope (lolz) and put new tires on it.
Thanks Alberto, this was some very good information! By the way, the tires LOSE or don't LOSE performance. "Loose" is something that is not tight. :) Excellent video, thanks! :)

haha without any wrap or protector
I think the point of this video was that if the tyres are new and protected from the environment they’ll be fine? 🤣
