    Best explanation of suspension I've heard. You deserve a university teaching position.

    I think for a part two of this video it would be interesting to show what some adjustments to the suspension do to the behavior of the bike. And what kind of changes you have to make to the suspension to solve some common problems experienced during racing.

    Excellent video, but I have to correct you on one thing said @ 19:20. The total K value for 2 springs in parallel (side by side) is the sum of both K values, NOT the average of the two. If spring #1 has a k = 95, and spring #2 has a k = 100, the K_equivalent will be 195.
    I can derive it for proof:
    Spring 1 and Spring 2 are in parallel, so they will both be compressed the same distance x when a force is applied.
    So the total force is F_total = F_1 + F_2
    Recall for springs, the Force = k(x); (k value times distance x)
    So we can substitute original F_total equation and say, F_total = k_1(x) + k_2(x); (remember distance compressed is the same x since they're parallel springs)
    Factor out the x distance, we have:
    F_total = (k_1 + k_2)(x)
    Therefore, with the equation above, we can conclude that equivalent or total spring constant k for parallel springs is k_1 + k_2 = k_total
    I remember you mentioned that you would of liked to be an engineer if you didn't choose racing in a past video, so thought you might of enjoyed this!
    Cheers from California.

    Yeah this was definitely the best suspension video I've seen. I watched a handful today and all the others started just rambling on about things that experienced folks would know, rather than INTRODUCING the concepts, despite the videos saying "all you need to know", "101", and "explained." Thank you very much!

    Even for somewhat sportive road riding the suspension makes a lot of difference, at least in confidence. My bike as undersprung for my weight and riding style, and without knowing it the rear shock was damaged internally.
    After having these issues fixed I found myself making naughty kneedowns on some of my favourite roads (which I only did on track before (and is probably smarter to only to there)).
    Changes made: replacement rear shock with stronger spring. Stronger springs in front fork, adjusted compression shims.
    Costs: ~100 euros for the rear spring, ~250 euros for the front end work.
    (replacement shock under warranty)
    Difference in confidence/joy: priceless.
    Invest in your suspension before getting all kinds of louder exhausts (in fact, just don't do this...) and other shiny accessories.

    I'm a mechanical engineering student, and I've learned that both gases and fluids are compressible, but in the cases of most fluids, the amount of energy needed to compress them (by little!) is huge. That's why it is a good approximation to say they are uncompressible. Anyway, I'm sure that in such serious cases they calculate with it.
    The explanations in the video were professional, thank you for working with it!

    Hey Alberto, Excellent video! I 3d modeling & diagrams of the various suspension components combined with your photos of the actual physical components was very helpful, but the high quality digital simulations you used to help identify and explain the different components that a modern suspension system is made up of, how they function when in use and the effect that they can have on the performance and handling characteristics of a motorcycle were awesome!! All of the visual aids, combined with you're great explanations of all of the different parts of the system; their features, characteristics and even how to adjust them, def makes this one of the best mc suspension videos I've seen yet!! Thank you👍👍
    Great Job & best of luck to you this season!!!🙌
    Btw, I'd also be interested in seeing a part 2 as Elmer suggested.

    Something I need to clear out:
    - Adjusting rebound and commpression does change the speed of the spring. But when we apply a fix amount of force but in 2 different periods: very long and very short time; the suspension will travel differently
    - Adjust preload doesn't change the spring stiffness; the only way is to change the spring.
    Or I have a miscomception.
    Very very helpful video, bro!!

    • @claudebaron9525
      @claudebaron9525 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      M I’m not a expert but from my experience, since we all know the rear brake isn’t really the one who stop you, the front brakes do that works, so I always fix my rear break not to tight even a bit on the loose side because the rear wheel was so easy to lock, so with motor compression and the front break I was working hard, but just touching the rear, and when I could feel the rear wheel lift up , in short more then often I used the rear break to keep the rear wheel to the grounds. Hope that help in a sense , but theirs another thing , it’s that now almost every bikes as anti-locks and tracks controls electronics.
