I owned a Staples Dexley chair for about a year, I was relatively happy with it, but my wife needed a chair to work from home. I went and found a used aeron on facebook marketplace for $350, and the difference is night and day in the quality of the chair, and how comfortable I am after hours of sitting in it. Used quality chair is the way to go over any big box office store's offerings.
Used aerons are always a great idea for the right price! I’ve had a lot of people say the quality difference is huge but in terms of comfort they’re extremely similar. I’m actually working on a 1 year review right now.
@@SpencerStanley No they're not lol, the Aeron is far more comfortable than any budget Staples chair. The mesh on these cheap Chinese chairs doesn't compare to the 8Z pellicle mesh on the Aeron.

Regarding Dexley, according to an ex-employee at Staples, it's not as good as the Hyken and is only there for bigger people who isn't comfortable on the Hyken. Again, these cheap chairs just have synergy/adjustment issues which can ruin comfort. BTOD are a much better source of genuine reviews and expert advice on TH-cam, when it comes to office furniture. Secondly, chair comfort is extremely subjective, so I'm not surprised that you may find Aeron's mesh less comfortable than the one used on the Hyken. Herman Miller sell 3 different mesh chairs, none of the mesh used is the same and some ppl prefer one design over another. Yes, body types can affect how comfortable you find a certain chair, and once again this is something high end office chairs excel in, since they have a far better idea of ergonomic design. I know how you like to make it seem that these high end office chairs are overpriced, but you're completely missing the key points. Cheap chairs don't last long and will need to be replaced regularly, especially if you intend to sit in them for long sessions every day. There is a huge second hand market for high end office chairs, so there's no need to buy a brand new one, especially if you don't have a large budget. Yea, that's the reason why I just got Aeron Remastered, got 12 year warranty from amazing local shop so... I don't have to keep buying new chair every 2 years anymore. It's not 1000 extra just for premium feel, it's 1000 extra for 10 extra years of warranty and the premium feel and more comfortable chair.
My Hyken is still going strong after getting it in 2017, but I think that the build quality has gone down a bit since then. The chairs at the store don't feel as good to me.
ive had this chair for roughly 10+ years. everything but the arms has held up amazingly and the piston has only just started to degrade. im a 6' 190lb dude and its been an awesome get. im debating to replace the chair or just the bad parts.
Love to hear that! I can see the worst part being the arms for sure. Has the mesh held up ok? Someone said it started to degrade after two years. Thanks!
Kind of a weird production note but I love how clear your articulation is! You're really well spoken and the mic picks it up well. Also this chair is lit fam
Great review - I own this chair. Important correction: the width of the arm rest can be adjusted during assembly with about 1 inch of adjustment on either arm (two inches total). This can be changed by loosening the bolts, moving the arms, and re-tightening. Not ideal for an office with mutliple users, but just fine for home use. Also, the seat depth can be adjusted through a similar mechanism by moving the back of the chair to the desired position on assembly with about 1.5 inches of adjustment.
Hi Cole, thanks for pointing that out. You're completely correct. I think I mentioned that in the video, I just wanted to see more width adjustment in the arms than it already had. That being said I'm used to the more narrow arms now! Thanks.
I spent an hour in Staples going back and forth between the Hyken and the Dexley chairs. Went home and checked Craigslist only to find there was a local wholesaler letting some brand new extra Hykens from a bulk order go for $100 each. That settled it. I think if I paid the $159 to get one from Staples it would have still been totally worth it. It is very comfortable and under $200 is nothing when it comes to your back and neck. Those two things are kind of important. Also thanks so much for this video. It was enjoyable and a lot of good points made.
@@StardustLegacyFighterI completely disagree. The “value” for money is much better with the Hyken. The HM is a much better chair in every regard but chair for money it is not better value for the vast majority of people.
@@SpencerStanley You're ignoring warranty and resale value completely. Yes, the Hyken is much cheaper up front and appears to be the better value chair. However, there's a certain universal thing known as "time", this is where cheaper chairs like the Hyken will fare much worse, over the course of its lifespan.
@@StardustLegacyFighter the Hyken has one of the best warranties I’ve used out of any product. I agree that the HM would hold up better over the course of its lifespan but again, most people don’t ant to shell out HM money.
If you work from home 40 plus hours a week, get the Aeron. It's an investment in your health. Don't slowly go there, just get it. That or the Steelcase which I sat in for a few years before Covid and it didn't do much for me but my back is hosed and it didn't offer enough lumbar support. The Aeron is a life saver for me and well, there's that insane warranty which is a 24/7 - 365 days a year for 12 year warranty. It's a call center warranty. 12 years is a long time. Get it and use it.
@@SpencerStanley Why would he need to if he's doing well enough to own a brand new Aeron? The Hyken is outclassed in every single way and shouldn't ever be brought up in the same conversation as the Aeron. You should compare lower end Herman Miller chairs with the Hyken, like the Lino, Verus and Sayl, instead of going right to the top and making the biggest mismatch of the century.
Had the hykken for 6 years, got it at $130 at the time so I am FULLY qualified to speak on this. The reason for replacement was the cylinder finally went bad (I only weigh 155 pounds for reference) and the lumbar support was completely blown out several years ago. First of all, for the price it's a good chair especially if you want all mesh. The durability on the components are questionable. The arm rests were torn up pretty good but still functional and not terrible looking. The mesh held up very well but it's a bit rubbery and not enjoyable to sit in with bare skin like if you sit shirtless at your PC in hot weather. I sat in a few Aeron Remastered and Classic, and tried the Atlas headrest today. First of all, this chair is VERY expensive (I'd suggest going used for around $450). Secondly, this chair is superior to the Hyken in every way and by a large margin. The mesh is MUCH higher quality and feels better to the touch. The arm rests feel very plush and usably moveable. The Atlas head rest is -PERFECT- both in looks and performance. I would have no problem putting that on my chair if I had one.
@@SpencerStanley Aeron = Super-Hyken You get what you pay for situation. But the cost is 10x and the improvement is more like 2x. Used is definitely the way to go. I ended up buying a used Leap V2 from the guy for $450 in "like new" condition. I have been very very very satisfied with this chair after about 2 months. Much cozier and more "open". All mesh chairs have plastic buckets and constraints to sit in. The cloth chairs offer many more natural seating positions because they form around your body.
Also I think people who get the more expensive look at them as a long term investment like you said. Cause being higher quality they will last much longer than this chair will. But for the price this chair wins for me
Totally agree! For my current situation, this chair just really fits what I was looking for and the budget I had> If I'm being completely honest I may upgrade to a HM in the distant future.
1 tip for this chair regarding the nonexistent lower back support: Get a chair cushion and shove it between the back and seat. Now you have lower back support. Its made my back issues due to the chair much better.
You say you don’t mind paying money for a quality item but you bought the staples chair. HM makes the best chairs and I have the Logitech Embody. It is night and day compared to my Steelecase Seties 1 chair that my company bought me a few months ago when we were all sent home to work. I’ve had my Embody for a month and I have loved everything about it. It’s comfortable, durable, and supportive. I’m glad I spent $1100 for the chair brand new shipped. The SS 1 chair would hurt my tailbone after 3hrs of sitting down but the Embody allows me to sit in the chair all day long without having to stand up. I work from home permanently now so the embody was a no brained. I see where you’re coming from saying that if you’re eventually going back to the office then it may not be a good idea for you but in my case I’m work from home permanently.
I work from home permanently and the Hyken is still a great chair. I was going to buy a HM eventually but I actually see no need to as of right now. This chair is less well built but in terms of comfort it’s unreal.
@@SpencerStanley I think you're hyping up the comfort way too much, it's not on the same level as the top offerings from Steelcase, Herman Miller and Haworth.
how tall r u? I noticed the head rest for you is right about the right position. I'm 5'8, and when I sit uprightstraight, the head rest is like really low, and if I rest my head on it, I'll be looking at the ceiling.....
I bought one of these last year in May, so it's almost a year and this chair was great while it lasted. But an issue that was not mentioned here that I did see in a video before buying this chair was the mesh back becoming loose over time. Reviews showed the mesh would be good for 2 to 3 years and then since the chair is cheap, you'd just buy another one and you'd have your money's worth there. But it's not even a year yet and the mesh on my chair is so loose that the lumbar support digs in my lower back and I started question why. Well literally today is when I gave my chair a good look and yup you could see waves in the mesh. So if I have to keep buying these things every year, total is probably going to beore than an aeron. I'm done trying to find the "best" chair and just going to pull the trigger on an Aeron.
I’ve had mine for a year now and haven’t had that issue at all. Mesh is fine. Biggest issue for me is the cushion at your legs that has absolutely been destroyed. I just did a video about it.
@@SpencerStanley I find that incredibly hard to believe, unless you're barely using the chair or you're not resting your back on the backrest properly like you should.
hyken i think fits younger people like myself better, since i will be moving to college within the next year, and i doubt ill have the room in my car to carry a chair aswell on the trip there
Only complaints on it so far are the wheels and the arm rests. The wheels are really cheep. I swapped these out for hardwood safe wheels. They make a world of difference but raise the chair up about an inch. The bottom position of the chair was already where it needed to be before the new wheels so now it's an inch too high. I'm 5'9". So I feel the range needs to go lower on this chair. The armrests work but they need to have an option to rotate them back so they are completely out of the way.
The wheels and armrests are really cheap. They used those areas to save money for sure. My biggest problem though has been the cushion under the front of the seat. It’s pretty much torn itself apart.
Bro idk why but I laughed harder than I should have when you said this AD was brought to us by you🤣 I subbed from that alone, anyways good vid just bought this awhile ago today
Thanks for the review, man! BTW, I think the lighting might be better if you moved the camera so it didn't face the window. The workstation is a good background, but it may look better to use the natural light to your advantage and place the camera on the desk.
Thank you I appreciate that! And yeah I get what you mean totally. I’ve been playing a around with a lot of different setups in my office and just totally loved it into my master bedroom.
I have one of these, and it's a really good chair, I spend long hours sitting at home office, and with other models I have had some lower back pain, specially if I'm overweight at the moment, with this one, I don't feel pain, at any time, my only concern is that after 1 year use, almost daily, the mesh is giving up a little. Hope this help.
Any bigger guys, this char will not fit you. I’m 6”0, 275. It’s too narrow and my hips hit the armrests and the seat pad just feels a little to short on the backs of my legs. And the headrest hits my shoulders. The manufacturer recommends leaving the headrest off during construction if you are 5”10 or above. Just some tips from someone who has a different body type than this reviewer.
Awesome point! I wish I thought about this during the review. Someone else pointed out that Staples makes a really similar version but for larger folks. Look in to that maybe :)
I had one issue with the foam where your legs hang over the seat. Staples customer service sent me a brand new seat and I haven’t had an issue since. The arm rests have somewhat worn but nothing I would complain about.
Yes you can! I made mine as wide as possible. That being said the adjustment isn'y a massive amount. I find it comfortable enough now though. It just took some time to adjust to the chair.
really want a hyken but the lifespan of the chair is not worth the environmental waste vs the Aeron that can last well over a decade. Only downside I'm hearing is that the aeron lacks any comfort for crossing your legs which i tend to do when watching long videos.
That’s a really fair point. I haven’t had any issues with the chair yet other than the leg foam has moved a tad but it’s not broken, just adjust it back into place. I cross my legs constantly while using my chair, like too much. I would feel weirdly restrained if I couldn’t.
So I'm a borderline dwarf (5'6), and i've heard that this chairs is better for shorter people. I'm not a tech developer, I'm not a person spending 8-10 hours a day at a desk, but I'm a student looking for a chair that will feel better than a 40$ office chair to sit in. I've heard lots of mixed opinions on this chair, and I just wanted to know if you'd still recommend buying it. Thanks, and I loved the review.
Hi Owen! Thanks for the positive feedback I always appreciate it. I've actually begun to love this chair even more after the initial review. The build quality of the legs and arms hasn't been an issue for me at all. The mesh has held up really well and it's EXTREMELY comfortable. Most of my initial complaints were more of me comparing it to my old chair, now that I've had it for a while I actually see no reason to upgrade until this one starts to wear out. I don't think height should be a major issue for you. If possible I'd go into Staples before purchasing as they should have a demo to try out. Thanks again!
Honestly the Hyken is a great chair and completely worth the money. If you can find a HM used I think that is also worth the value. I’d like to get both when I can find one used and do a bit of a better comparison after some long-term use. Hope it helped anyways 👍🏻
Glad it works for someone.. I'm 5' 9, 200 lbs .This chair is uncomfortable as hell to me & built VERY cheap. A waste of 150 bucks if you can find it for that.
If you can't taste the difference between Wagyu beef and USDA sirloin, get the sirloin. If you can feel the difference between a HM and brand X, get the brand X.

lol I own this chair, and I came across your video because I'm hunting for something different. I absolutely HATE IT. It cuts off the circulation in my legs due to the hard plastic edges; it nabs my hair in the stupid headrest that can't be locked into place; it collects dust like crazy under the seat (seriously, bet you never noticed, but if you tip the sucker sideways, it's NASTY). It also ruined my L-shaped desk due to the hard components of the armrest scraping the wood. So over this chair!
I’ve never had any of those issues other than the dust, it sure gets dusty. I’m sure any other chair would accumulate the same amount of dust it’s just more visible due to the design. I know a lot of larger people have complained that the chair is too small and I know they make a larger version which may fix the loss of circulation. The only real issue I’ve had since this review is the cushion at the front comes out of place. Please let me know what options you find!
I ended up getting the Ergo Chair 2 but with the prices going up this year I think the Hyken is a great budget option to consider. What so enticing about the Hyken is that mesh seat! Summer can be brutal and a mesh seat would make a massive difference compared to cushion for breathability. Great Video!
Thank you! I completely agree, the mesh sets is awesome. It’s obviously a budget chair so build quality in some areas aren’t the best but overall use and comfort are incredible for the price. I planned on possibly upgrading in the future but I see no need, this chair is pretty perfect.
@@SpencerStanley good to know. I bought the Hyken you recommended, with the three year extended warranty. That's so much better than the shitty limited warranty that Autonomous provides.

I totally agree and that’s pretty much the premise of the entire video. If you need a budget WFH option this is great. Not everyone can afford a $1,500 office chair.
@@SpencerStanley it's unavailable (out of stock) on amazon us and it's like 400$ USD on the canadian amazon. I honestly have not heard about it before your comment. It looks a lot similar to the Hyken. If it's built well and ergonomic it looks like a pretty cool chair. I like the rollerblade wheels.
Your claim that mesh doesn't degrade like padding seems strange to me. Mesh is just plastic. Over time it can stretch and start drooping. It takes a really high quality mesh to be able to last. And I doubt the Hyken would provide that. It does seem like a great chair for the price tho.
If you could buy either of those used I'm sure they'd be great chairs. I think HM chairs are great value used if they've been taking care of. I would have probably gone with a used HM if I could find one.
There's just absolutely no reason to purchase this cheaply made chair, unless you're on a very tight budget. Refurbished Aeron classic chairs aren't that much more expensive and if you have the budget, nothing tops a brand new remastered one.
Not the best decision. The Hyken will last 1-2 years before giving out on you while the Aeron will last 20 years. You can find 10 year old Aerons on Craigslist that have been absolutely abused in a busy office that are still in decent condition. I guarantee you there is no Hyken that has lasted 10 years. How do I know? I’m a cheap bastard and I’ve gone through 4 Hyken chairs so far. They’ll last about a year or less if you sit in it for 4-6 hours every single day. The thing about the Hyken is that it gets more uncomfortable as time goes on. The mesh will start to fray and poke into your thigh. The foam strip under the front of the seat will rip and dislodge itself. The mesh will start to sag from the frame. These same problems have occurred with every single Hyken I’ve had. So while it may last 1-2 years, the last half of its life will be miserable for you as you try to ignore these problems. If you’re an extremely light user that only sits on the chair for 1-2 hours 3-4 times a week, it may very well last you 5 years. But there’s no way that it will last more than a year with 8 hour daily usage. It’s too poorly constructed, the mesh is cheap and the foam strip is glued in place. Financially, if you don’t have the money for an aeron, it makes sense. It’s comfortable before the issues start to creep up, and it’s affordable. But if you can afford a used Aeron for $600, it’s just a better financial decision.
Lucky you didn’t buy the ego chair it sucks (after sitting on it for an hour or so feels like you’re sitting on concrete). I waisted $400 because I just ordered a dexley from staples tonight. I have an areon at work. When I get it we will see how it compares
Do yourself a favor and get a herman miller second hand or refurbished... I got an embody for 400 from the owner with the sticker still on it, warranty good until 2027. Or get this cheap ass chair that feels cheap and you gotta replace in a year.
Buy cheap buy twice. NEVER buy mesh chairs below $500. Cheap mesh like the Hyken starts well then gets stretched after 2 years it's finished, off it goes to the landfill. You see used 20yo Aeron on the market with the mesh still standing strong, and you would never see a 5yo hyken on the market. All the expensive chairs use American Matrex mesh and its durabily cannot be compared to cheap look-alikes. $200 for 2 years vs $1200 for 12+ years (at which point you can resale for $400), no brainer which is the better value
Not really expensive for something you use all day everyday. Build quality is worth the price. That being said I think the value for this chair is much better.
Bought myself an Aeron and my GF a Hyken. The Hyken feels like a cheap toy in comparison. That being said, in terms of comfort and ergonomics they aren't that far off. So if you aren't a 6'2" 240lb fatty boombalatty that murders office chairs like myself, the Hyken is probably all you need. At least that is my current theory. If the Hyken breaks on her I will probably upgrade her to an Aeron. They are expensive, but my god are they built like tanks.
Yeah, the Hyken is a lot less money, you'd expect it to feel a lot cheaper than the Aeron. At the end of the day, you get what you pay for. That being said, I thought I'd look for an Aeron a bit after purchasing this and I have absolutely no need this chair is perfect.
@@SpencerStanley Agreed, I didn't start with the Aeron, I worked my way up after breaking increasingly expensive chairs over the years. That being said, mid range chairs are mostly trash with all the same weak points of budget chairs, often more as they try to add a bunch of pointless features and adjustments to justify the price. So unfortunately if your ass is simply too mighty for a hyken, realistically your only other option is the super premium end of the market. I agree anyone who can get away with a Hyken, absolutely should. Just wanted to point out Aerons do have their place, as the build quality really is out of this world. But if you don't need a chair that can survive a nuclear blast, you are correct... buying an Aeron is a complete waste of money.

Kind of a weird production note but I love how clear your articulation is! You're really well spoken and the mic picks it up well.
Also this chair is lit fam
Really appreciate that! Means a lot
Thanks Dave! I totally agree. You shouldn’t skimp out when purchasing something you use often and this is a great value chair.
I bought the Dexley chair and I'm loving it.
The Herman Miller Aeron is definitely a better buy and worth every penny. I got my used but like new for $300 and I love it.
That’s an amazing deal and I don’t disagree! Herman miller is by far better. My argument was more value based than overall better.
@@SpencerStanley Even in terms of value, the Aeron is still better. You can't just compare the up front price.
Love how you broke down the cost in comparison to its life span. Thanks.
No problem, thanks for watching!
Have you used a Hyken?
no.
@@MrCheezyCrack No u
Awesome comment, I completely agree. If I have problems with my Hyken in the future I'd look at a used Aeron.
@@SpencerStanley Aeron = Super-Hyken
You get what you pay for situation.
@@drewmorg. agreed, I’m happy you found an affordable option that works!
Awesome tip but honestly I haven’t had any issues with the lumbar support myself.
I'm currently sitting on a rigid, wooden kitchen chair haha. But have just placed an order for a Sidiz T50! :) Can't wait
Congrats!
how tall r u? I noticed the head rest for you is right about the right position. I'm 5'8, and when I sit uprightstraight, the head rest is like really low, and if I rest my head on it, I'll be looking at the ceiling.....
5”11 on a good day. I don’t really rest my head back much if I’m honest.
@@SpencerStanley I find that incredibly hard to believe, unless you're barely using the chair or you're not resting your back on the backrest properly like you should.
hyken i think fits younger people like myself better, since i will be moving to college within the next year, and i doubt ill have the room in my car to carry a chair aswell on the trip there
Yeah, it's a great chair!
How’s the chair after a few weeks? Do you still recommend it?
I honestly love it even more now. Really happy with my purchase.
Bro idk why but I laughed harder than I should have when you said this AD was brought to us by you🤣 I subbed from that alone, anyways good vid just bought this awhile ago today
I really appreciate that man 😂 I cringed pretty hard when making that but thought it might stick so I’m happy I kept it hahaha
When you recline all the way, are you able to comfortably rest your head on the head rest?
Yup!
Great chair.
I never thought learning about chairs could be so interesting! I might need to swap out my IKEA chair 😂 Great video man(:
Thanks man!!!! I’d for sure swap this for the ikea chair!
If you’re bigger I would suggest the Dexley Mesh from Staples. It’s really good. Essentially a larger version of this Hyken.

Yes you can! I made mine as wide as possible. That being said the adjustment isn'y a massive amount. I find it comfortable enough now though. It just took some time to adjust to the chair.
I bought this chair today after checking out chairs at Staples yesterday. I was like, wow, this shit is comfortable the second I sat in it
Unreal! For the price it’s extremely comfy.
really want a hyken but the lifespan of the chair is not worth the environmental waste vs the Aeron that can last well over a decade.
Hyken has 7 year warrantly.

Was aiming for pretty decent! That’s my goal in life. Happy I could help 👍🏻
lol I own this chair, and I came across your video because I'm hunting for something different.

It doesn’t. It’s from P&Co. which is a British clothing company. Why are you drawing SS aesthetics from the poster? Seems odd.

Any thoughts on the NOUHAUS Ergo3D Ergonomic Office Chair?
I honestly have not heard about it before your comment. It looks a lot similar to the Hyken. If it's built well and ergonomic it looks like a pretty cool chair. I like the rollerblade wheels.
Your claim that mesh doesn't degrade like padding seems strange to me. Mesh is just plastic. Over time it can stretch and start drooping. It takes a really high quality mesh to be able to last. And I doubt the Hyken would provide that. It does seem like a great chair for the price tho.

It’s worth the aesthetic
Agreed, still feel a lil bad tho
There's just absolutely no reason to purchase this cheaply made chair, unless you're on a very tight budget. Refurbished Aeron classic chairs aren't that much more expensive and if you have the budget, nothing tops a brand new remastered one.
Not everyone needs an Aeron.
How much is a refurbished Aeron?
Really good points here, I’m going to making a one year update video soon.
you sure do demand alot for a chair that is retailed at $130 and comparing it to herman millers
Honestly love this chair, don't have a need to change anytime soon.
But its good.
Hyken has 7 years warrantly
34 cents per day for 10 years is RIDICULOUSLY EXPENSIVE chair! Don’t kid yourself, with Herman Miller you pay through the nose for the brand name.
Not really expensive for something you use all day everyday. Build quality is worth the price. That being said I think the value for this chair is much better.
@M not at that price for me. I was going to get one later on and I see no need after having the hyken.
You're a fool.
The joy of being 6’6” 280 lbs...
Theres a larger version of the chair that Staples makes called the, "Dexley." I'd check it out.
