    6'5" 280 lbs and I love this chair. The chair back hits my upper back and not at my shoulders but not really a bad thing. The chair back does a great job conforming to my back so it can be barely noticeable where the top of the chair back ends. I was quite worried that I wouldnt quite make the transition to this comfortably, because it does encourage better posture and sitting back in the chair really makes the chair more comfortable, as it puts the chair back into proper position to do what it is meant to do. After about a week I felt neutral about it, then after two weeks I wondered what I would be willing to sit in after it.

    I am 6'3" 180lbs and have owned this chair since 2014. I cannot recommend it enough. Both my job and my hobbies have me in a chair for the bulk of my day; so I researched chairs with my future health in mind. I love that the Embody encourages me to use good ergonomics, but also doesn't punish me to a noticeable extent if I want to be slouched back or off to the side. I was blown away at how comfortable the seat and back were despite there being no traditional cushion, to the point where I prefer this over the extremely padded chairs at work. I feel less fatigued, sore or pinched after a long session than any other chair I've owned or used. After 8 years now (2022) my chair looks almost as good as the day I bought it. Despite it being mainly plastic and still having the original seat material. There is barely any sign of wear; despite being used almost every day with more 16+ hour gaming sessions than I care to admit too. If you have to be in a chair for long periods, you should always get up and move around at least once an hour... but human nature informs us we are not always going to do that. Knowing that, make the investment in your future health and get a good chair. I'm in my 50's now, all the stupid stuff I did when I was younger has started to catch up with me. I take my health more seriously and I don't regret a dime of what I spent on this chair. It is worth it.

    regarding the arm rests: it really helps to lift the arms slightly and then move it in or out. Then it's actually working quite well, doesn't require too much of muscle or sound like you break something. Admittedly, it's still a little easier using both hands, but I manage to do it with one hand as well.

    Seeing as this is the only Embody review you'll need to watch, and I've annoyed Ahnestly with enough of my comments today, I'm going to drop one more thing here specifically for anyone considering the Logitech Embody.
    If you watch Logitech Embody specific reviews you may see mention that the foam padding in the seat is cut off and you can feel where the foam ends. Initially, the Logitech Embody was in fact designed this way and only covered the seat at it's minimum seat depth, and when extended at all the extended area was unpadded. I received my Logi Embody from Herman Miller about a week and a half ago now and realized I did not noticed this problem, and my foam is in fact covering the entire extended seat.
    After collaborating with some people on the Herman Miller subreddit we found out that all Logitech Embodies produced after ~2/12/21 (Maybe up to a week earlier, but no more, we don't have an exact date pinned) have been revised and the copper infused foam will cover the entirety of the seat, even when fully extended, so this is no longer a con to take into consideration unless buying your Logitech Embody used.
    Important to note: You won't see this issue mentioned in any UK based reviewers coverage of the chair, and this issue will not be worth considering when buying used in the UK, as due to different regulations there the Logitech Embody's UK variant has always had full seat foam coverage.
    The thread is available here for anyone interested: www.reddit.com/r/hermanmiller/comments/m1k9ya/embody_gaming_refresh_in_north_america/?

      Great info! So since there isn't any difference between the seat foam now, what is the difference between a logitech embody vs reg embody?

    • @A_Gris
      @A_Gris 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@warrentran The Logitech Embody has a section of foam padding along the spine, which the standard does not. This bothers some people to no end (can make a little noise when rubbing up against the back, and on occasion some people have complained about it causing some discomfort.)
      It's something that the majority of people are indifferent about, but some are irritated by. At this point the biggest reason to get a Logitech variant is just if you really like the aesthetics, to be completely honest.

    Really love this review! I also love my Embody chair! But I have to say that the biggest gripe/flaw in the chair are the arm rests! This may not be an issue depending on your height (I'm 185cm).
    I find that the arm rests sit far to forward and make it impossible too have the chair sit up against a desk whilst the arm rests are at the correct height to have your elbows/arms in an ergonomic resting position.
    If you're someone who leans back a lot, the arm rests are pretty unusable.
    I'd really love if the arm rests could've been able to move forward & back like the seat's cushion extender. Would even pay for a high quality aftermarket modification if they exist.

    After having the chair for a year and experiencing this myself it seems one of the most common failure points on the embody is the quite amazingly shitty internal design of the button mechanism.
    the way the button on the inside works is the button is 1 whole piece that extends into the arm with 1 arm pointing forward towards the front of arm rest and 1 arm pointing towards the back of the armrest and hovering above the sliding tube part of the arm. (forwards being toward the outer half of the seat where your legs dangle off and backwards being towards the backrest of the chair)
    inside the arm of the chair the front arm of the button extends out of and is held in place. This creates a lever action on the opposite arm of the button the rests above the sliding arm mechanism pulling the mechanism up and allowing the arm to move. It's fairly cheap and it's fairly effective the problem is that because it's made of plastic and not say.. metal so you strain the front arm of the button every time you push it and if there is any faults in it at all even microscopic ones repeated use can cause it to snap. Which it seems to... alarmingly often......

    A tip to adjust the arm width is to lift the arms slightly before moving them. As long as us grab either the arm itself or stem. Not the holder.

  • @Zaptruder
    @Zaptruder 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    That back knob isn't lumbar adjustment. I thought it was for the longest time. It's actually upper back tilt. You can see it in the video - the upper back is tensioning/untensioning significantly more than the lower back.
    It's real purpose is to ensure that your head is balanced and upright through all the tilt positions - this is why the Embody was designed without a headrest; their designers believed that with your head perfectly balanced and upright, there'd be no reason for one - costs more, but also impedes natural movement.
    I've had this chair for 12 years now... and I learnt that function after 11 years ago - the instances where I wanted a headrest went from say... 5% of the time... down to 2% of the time. A significant improvement!

    Hmm I actually went to a local HM dealer today in my city, and going in after seeing raving reviews on youtube about the Embody, surprisingly I didn't love it.
    The back definitely didn't "flex" as much or as easily as it seemed in the video, and what I noticed is, when I turned side to side to "stretch" my back, I noticed the middle of the upper back was pushing up against my spine in a painful manner.
    I can also feel the "system" of the back rest quite easily through the fabric. It's definitely not a terrible chair, but I think for me I found the Aeron so much more comfortable and supportive.

My old chair could not adjust the arm rest and so doing that on this chair, it relaxed my already tensed shoulders. I tweaked it a bit to my liking and it just feels good. Rolling is super smooth, and stretching out arms above and reaching behind the chair feels so natural.

      The Logitech version chair is awesome isn’t it? I don’t know how I’ve gone this long without knowing anything about Herman Miller. This style chair has been out since 2009 when I was 26 and now I’m 39. The only difference is that I work from home permanently now due to the pandemic and I needed home office equipment. Now I have a top of the line chair. I bought mine Logitech because I wanted to ensure that I was getting a newly built chair and I only paid $1100 for the chair on eBay shipped brand new.

    Great review! Have had my gaming Embody for a week or so now, and I absolutely love it.
    Not sure if you'll see this Ahnestly, but a quick tip from someone who also likes to put their feet under their chair and "freak out" who was also annoyed by the clacking plastic. I found the best thing to reduce that clacking (for me) is when you want to have your feet under the chair for a while to fully pull the seat depth in to it's shortest setting. The clacking is just your calves repeatedly pushing up the seat pan and letting it drop since lifting pulls the adjustable section out of it's locked positions in the rail so it can be moved. (Which you can see at ~16:03)
    If you can draw in your seat depth enough to not push up the edge with your calves, no more clacking plastic. :) Though it could depend on the person. I'm 5'11" with a lot of my height being long legs, so I normally sit with the seat at it's maximum length, so drawing it all the way in is a drastic difference.
    And if not, at least odds are that clacking isn't going to hinder the durability of the chair, or at least I wouldn't imagine it could cause any serious issues since it's a piece intended to move that way.
    Also, if you haven't tried fully loosening the lumbar in tandem with full recline, give it a go sometime, I find it helps to really lean as far back in the chair as possible since in addition to the recline the back will have more flex allowing it to bend back a little more.

    • @Ahnestly
      @Ahnestly  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow great tips! As for the plastic clacking, it happens less for me when it's extended and 100% of the time when it's fully withdrawn. Haha not a huge deal. I have a footrest so my feet are on that nowadays

    • @A_Gris
      @A_Gris 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Ahnestly Well if you ask me, all that matters is that you can find a position for the seat depth that reduces that sound whether it's all the way in or out. :P
      Everybody's built different and sits differently, so it would make sense they'd have different sweet spots to avoid the issue, but I agree it's not a huge deal either way.
      Still need to get a good footrest, I've been kicking up my feet on a suitcase for a while now because I've been too lazy to look into proper footrests. 😅

    Hi from Down Under. I've just started using my new Embody today following your fantastic TH-cam reviews. However, if the chair is not as good as you say then I'll be knocking on your door to give you a piece of my mind! The only thing I was disappointed about was the fact that it doesn't have a forward tilt as I use my keyboard all of the time, unlike you gamers who just slouch around all day. It took me a few hours before I discovered that the chair can be used in forward tilt mode - something that is probably well-known to experts such as yourself.
    I am very happy with the chair and find the seat more comfortable than my Steelcase Leap, although I prefer the lumbar support of the Leap better for me. I was delighted with myself when I discovered that the Embody can be used in the forward tilt mode by reversing the tilting process. With one or two feet on an angled foot rest, probably there is more control with just the one foot for better balance, I sit up against the desk and loosen the recline tension so that it is comfortable to recline into the upright position - the reverse of its intention. Also I lock the tilt limiter at the first setting so as not to catapult backwards.
    Later on I will order a head rest from Atlas which has a current lead time of 3 months. I haven't found your review of the production model but will keep searching. Keep up the good work. Alan.

    I really wanted to like this chair.
    Sadly this one doesn't work for me, the lowest supporting pixels are stiff and don't move at all, poking inside my lower back.
    Tilting the back so it's less pronounced makes my shoulders and neck hurt.
    The extended part of the seat is also not pixelated and you can feel the difference between the extended and non-extended part.
    This is less pronounced if you wear something like Jeans.
    Either way HM has quite the customer service, so I'm having mine returned, I suggest trying all of these for yourself if you get the same kind of service where you live.

    Great video! Great points, both the pros and the cons. I will say that after sitting in this chair, you do get turned off to just about every other chair out there!
    Bill Stumpf had a hand in designing this chair before he passed away, and he was one of the original designers for the Aeron. Lots of history and lots of research and development and genuine thought that went into designing this chair. To my knowledge, it is the only task chair (office chair) that is considered health positive.
    I think its important to understand that there are, in a nutshell, two different types of chair manufacturers: those that design, and those that do research and development that goes into design. Taking a car seat, giving it a pillow for lumbar, sticking the whole thing on casters, and calling it a gaming chair is a really cool idea and is easy enough to design and make, but it takes a lot more than that to make a quality chair. When Herman Miller was designing the Embody, they consulted with experts, built numerous prototypes, conducted laboratory experiments involving kinematics, preferred postures, pressure distribution, seated tasks, metabolics, etc. They then had experts test each new idea, concept, and prototype to continually improve upon the design until we had the Embody as we see it today. Jeff Weber and Bill Stumpf collaborated with more than 20 physicians and PhDs in the fields of biomechanics, vision, physical therapy, and ergonomics to give us the chair our bodies needed.
    Again, great job on the video, you really nailed the strengths of this chair and what makes it so unique. If there's anything you need (besides a headrest!), shoot me an email!

      @@klubhead7070 if you’re skinny or average in weight/height. I think the fern is perfect but if you’re on the bigger side I’d go with the embody. I actually own both chairs now and the embody is my more recent purchase. Idk what it is but the fern feels more like a task chair and I feel more productive in it whereas the embody I can definitely start to slouch and relax more in

    Guitars swivelling up is also needed for properly adjustable desks that can go really low to enable you working with an actual 90 degree arm angle - most of the chairs cannot go under the desk in this case and will hit it with armrests which is not comfortable at all as it restricts rotational movement of the chair a lot and is really annoying

    I can’t decide between the gaming Embody or the Gaming Aeron, what do you think?

    • @Ahnestly
      @Ahnestly  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      So I think at this point, I am Embody all the way. Every time I sit on my Aeron though, I'm always like damn that feels good. The Embody just gives me more flexibility and I LOVE the way my butt feels when I sit in it. The Aeron feels better on my lower back though! The Gaming Aeron is different...it has a different back support than the classic Aerons.
