  • In this lesson we break down one fill based on hand-to-hand 16th note triplets with tricky accents and see how far we can take it!
    Filmed with an iPhone 6s. Recorded and mixed in Logic.
    Drums are Yamaha PHX
    Cymbals are Zildjian
    K Custom Special Dry crash in the back, behind the floor tom.
    13" MasterSound Hats
    16" K Custom Session Crash x2
    Azuka on my left, camera right. Sizzles added to it.
    20" K Custom Dry Light Ride. My favorite ride ever.

    I find these fills fascinating how the straight 16 feel is metrically modulated over the triplet feel, thanks Steve.

    Thanks Steve! I just purchased a 20" K Custom Dry Ride and It is also the best sounding ride I have ever owned.I can use it as a crash , but also love the fact that I don't get a ton of wash when I ride on it.

    Amazing stuff. It seems like you are often playing some kind of diddle or roll going into the phrase and the beginning of your fills. What is that?

    • @SteveHolmesDrums
      @SteveHolmesDrums  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Kevin. Most likely it's just a six stroke roll over 16th note triplets. R ll rr L (repeat)

  • @gregpirovolidis4972

    Sounds great, something to work on. Seems to lose the triplet feel and sounds more like straight 16th notes but still way cool!

    Hi Steve. You mentioned about importance of singing along what you play. How then do you develop ability to know where beat 1 is? Cos most teachers advocate counting aloud quarters while playing instead of singing.

    • @johnrobinson8323
      @johnrobinson8323 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Singing and counting are both ways of vocalizing what you are playing. If it's easier for you to keep track of the 1 by actually saying 1 then do that. But some people can keep track of the one by singing the rhythm. Also. Steve did mention to keep your hi hat going on the quarter notes to keep track of the beat. Me personally. I do all three at different times.

      Hey it’s been a year but I’ll give an answer for anyone passing by as it’s something I was struggling with when seeing this video and I’ve conquered it now. I think the first phase is really to takeaway a couple examples from this video or come up with some phrases of yours and get used to playing them first if counting is tough, once that’s done and imbedded in muscle memory, start focusing on counting and from the 2/3 examples you got you need to start coming up with variations/little tweaks or a new phrase all together. For most concepts there’s only ever so many inversions/possibilities and you’ll very quickly come around to a situation where you have built a habit an an instinct for where the 1 will fall regardless of whatever phrase you improvise on the moment
