Adapting Elvin Jones' Licks To Use In EVERY Situation

  • In this quick tip, Keith Carlock breaks down his favorite lick - one he says he adapted from Elvin Jones and has become something of a signature.
It’s a simple paradiddle-based pattern: two notes on the bass drum, right hand left hand, and a roll to finish it: KKRLRRLL
The key to getting the dynamic hill-and-valley sound is to put the emphasis on the first four notes (KKRL) and keep the following roll quiet. Keith refers to that first kick-kick-right-left section as the ‘accent’.
From there, you can start mixing it up around the kit to make it more interesting. You can also make the roll longer. Try doubling it up: KKRLRRLLRRLL
You might change out the paradiddle-diddle for other rudiments if you want to make it your own.
But in this video were adapting Elvin Jones' Licks to use in every situation - In fills, in solos, as a transition, or maybe at the end of a song where you want to play a powerful flurry of notes. There are so many ways to adapt it, and even Keith is still finding new ways to play it. Now it’s your turn. Take it away!

When I met him in the early 2000's I was able to study with him. I remember at one point he said "I make mistakes with Wayne all the time". I was floored, because that band sounds perfect to me! What I got from that statement was being able to play through mistakes, no one should know, always play with confidence. Keith is always laying it down!

Keith is riveting to watch. His left hand traditional high grip back on the butt end of the stick and his ghost notes are so unique along with his original style. Great guy. I used to catch all of his gigs in Dallas back in the 90s before he moved to New York to hit the big time and I had never seen anyone that young in ‘92 play like that. Immediately he became one of my top influences as a drummer myself. Glad he made it out to British Columbia to Drumeo headquarters. I bet they were mesmerized by his playing live as we all are! Thanks Keith and the folks at Drumeo .

Same here Paul. I'm also from the DFW area. I remember in the 90s how everyone said you need to check the drummer (Keith) for the Dallas Brass & Electric band. . . then I found out what all the buzz was all about. A lot of drummers in Dallas were doing that left hand ghost thing like Keith . . . not sure who made it popular. But no one could do it to the same intensity as Keith. So thankful to witness a drum icon from his beginnings. From Vinnie Colaiuta "Finally a breakthrough drummer..."

Disagreed and only cause I met him at a clinic and he left his hi-hats and needed to borrow a pair so i let him use my constantinople and he hit them like he was trying to break them and then basically threw them back at me and said "these suck. Get me another pair". And those were my most prized cymbals at that point in my life so he really came off like a total pretentious ungrateful dick to me.

No one plays this "lick" like Keith! He pulls it off in every context- a wide arrange of different tempos, and feels.
It's completely his voice, fingerprint, and individuality.
Imo first step is shedding the rudimentary solo "three camps" a lot. Or shedding Syncopation using triplet rolls or 32nd note doubles.
Side note, I was able to study with Keith in the early 2000's up in New York. He was so generous, kind, supportive, and humble. He 100% deserves all of the gigs, achievements, and praise he's gotten since his career really took off! 😁👍

I knew Keith from George's Drum Shop in Jackson, MS in the 1980s, when Keith was like 13 and I was about 16. George showed me this lick in about 1985, so I think maybe it was George who really planted this idea in our heads. George was Keith's and my first teacher.
You can also play "para diddle-diddle-diddles" and they'll flip stickings every time.

This is such a fun lick and well demosntrated!
Try this, lead with the a paradiddle-diddle and then 2 16th note kicks. Either with 2 Rs or R L if you use a dou le pedal.
So, RLRRLLKK and then repeat. It gives your hands a second to place them somewhere else or a break if you need it lol. This allows for some serious speed woth development.
You can also reverse it after... and then it's his example pattern, but I use both feet to do it lol.
So, RLRRLLKKKKRLRRLLKK. it becomes very fluid after you can get it down and then up to speed. One of my favorites to play.

@@DrumeoOfficial thanks for everything awsome time to be alive when you can pick up your phone and learn any song or beat ...and the coolest video, as I'm becoming a pretty sweet Blues drummer,is the Tony Coleman how to play the blues from "are you kidding me" BB Kings drummer for 30 years. Every drummer in this world is so Blessed for having Drumeo again so much love!!!
