What games have introduced you to friends in your life? (I think it's safe to say that Melee and Runescape were the biggest two for me back in the day) 🥳 Likewise, thank you to WolleysBlues on Fiverr for the cover song used in the montage at the end of the episode. Be kind to one another, and I can't wait to connect in the comments!

I started playing Final Fantasy XIV about 7 or 8 months ago, and I've been blown away by how amazing and friendly and welcoming the community is. As with any online community, there are a few bad actors here and there, but overall everyone I've interacted with in the open world and in raids and dungeons have all been amazing. In particular, I regularly see a lot of people in the dungeon and raid finders being patient with newbies who are struggling to learn the mechanics. Where a lot of other games would have people yelling at them and scolding them for messing up, the FFXIV community consistently has people patiently guiding new players through how to complete the content. So yeah, the FFXIV community has been great for me, and I really appreciate them. Great video as always, really loved the touching tribute to Michael at the end.
100% agree with you Fly -- there's so much passion in these games to celebrate. I hope this video can be a good snapshot of how they've banded together! ❤️
@@NotYourFriend-YT Yes. Heck there was two petitions with many signatures for TF2 until Valve did something. And il bet they will do it again if something bad were to happen again.
The Big House situation still annoys me. I think what makes it more even frustrating is the excuse Nintendo gave. They claimed that the reason why did not like the Big House is because "The people in the event that were playing were using illegal copies". People defend what Nintendo said by making the argument that "Well there is no way every copy that was used was dumped from there own copy" but here is the thing: It dose not matter. Besides the fact that Nintendo cant definitively prove that all copies are illegal, even IF every copy was dumped from there own legal copy Nintendo would STILL argue that its illegal anyway! They don't like roms at all no matter were someone got them. If you don't believe me, check out their Australian website were they denounce all game dumping to be illegal. Point being, its not exactly fair to defend Nintendo here as Nintendo would not be fair anyway.
*Completely* agree with you ProjectionProjects -- it was especially painful, given what was going on in the world at the time. If there was EVER a time for them to look the other way and just let people play the old game, that would've been it. As always, I really appreciate you checking out the videos and for sharing your insights. You are the best! 👏👏
@@NotYourFriend-YT No problem. I really like your takes and views of all of this stuff involving Nintendo. Its sad to see the stuff Nintendo dose sometimes.
While ive heard how Nintendo loves on hating the Smash Bros Community, I now have actually understand the Realtionship that Nintendo has with Smash Bros (Melee in Specfic) , and honestly, I support the Smash Bros Community because of their Tenacity against Nintendo. I Respect S.B.M.
Im not super into Smash but I can emphasize with the community. I just wish Nintendo would just leave them alone. They don't even need to work with them, I would be fine with Nintendo not associating at all with them. I just want Nintendo to let them be.
To this day, Nintendo is regularly kicking themselves that they didn’t leave our community alone as it is _promoting_ their games, sure they can’t make money off _melee_ specifically but it very well could lead people in the direction of their other games, or even ultimate
I really appreciate the kind words Ki adi Mundi ❤️ Let me know if there's any topics you'd like to see on future episodes!! (The immediate next one is on Nintendo Switch Online 🎉)
The homie stock!!! ❤️ It's such a cool thing in the community, even though not everybody necessarily does it all the time. I definitely have returned the favor, though!!
Its great to hear how other people have met their buddies and stuff through mutual interests such as playing Smash, because I also owe my best years due to Smash, as when I went to college I would play Smash almost everyday in between breaks as I had both Brawl and Melee on my laptop, and that was basically my introduction to the competitive scene, because I had lived a sheltered life due to my mom as my father was never around, and everyday I would get wrecked by these folks that played Smash pretty much everyday, but as I kept playing and playing I eventually learned to play competitively, and from being the one that got wrecked I became the one who wrecked, and I even got called the King of Smash for the remainder of my time in that college, which is why I had gained so much confidence and then I went to a couple of tournaments, and this is when I started to get negative feelings for Smash, because a lot of people that I did meet at these events were just mean and bad sports, where they basically looked down on inexperienced players and also poor people, and I remember ending up getting disqualified in some of the tournaments, because I had been given the wrong information by the folks of these events, which is why I basically got out of that whole scene, and it didn't help that my family had been going through tough times, so I had to choose responsibilities instead of being able enjoy myself in my hobbies and stuff, so my only experiences with Smash after all of that was with my niece who was obsessed with it, and because I never let her win even as my sister and other adults told me to lose on purpose, that kid grew up to be an amazing player, because her frustrations at never being able to beat me, were channeled into becoming a better player, and she actually became undefeated in her school, and then represented the school in many tournaments, which made me really proud of her especially how she would usually gloat that her uncle was stronger than her, and its a shame that life basically made us separate when she moved to the US and I had to stay in PR, because visiting my sister during holidays was one of the couple of things that I enjoyed, but travelling via plane can be expensive and my family does not have the budget for it, as we have other more important expenses to deal with. Enjoying hobbies can open many opportunities for you, and they're usually the best ways to make friends and stuff, but people eventually have to grow up, and the folks that usually refuse to do so are not doing any favors for society as a whole, because they become the reason why a lot of us then get looked down when we mention gaming as our hobby, and I do not mean any disrespect for the people that make careers out of gaming or streaming or whatever, but a lot of these folks usually then become the reasons why people can no longer have fun in modern gaming, because a lot of us are just sick and tired of the Meta, and since most of us don't have as much time to dedicate to gaming as the people that make their careers out of it, we often end up not being able to enjoy ourselves, because nobody actually plays games to have fun anymore.
Oh man, Christian I freaking LOVED your comment. 👏 I respect the grind, and I will hence refer to you as the king of smash on mustache-tube! 😂❤️ Likewise, I feel you on when scenes get too fixated on the meta and forget to enjoy the game / people / fun of it. That's a great perspective to have!
The Super Smash Bros. series has been a part of my life ever since my family bought Brawl for me when I was around 6-8 years of age. I have every game in the series, except 64 and Melee (though that could change soon). I also was aware of Project M and what made it stand out from Brawl. Ultimate was where I started to take a dip into the Smash community. I have distinct memories from the summer of 2019, when I was enrolled in summer school prior to entering grade 10 (for advancement, not because I failed a subject LMAO, though I did have go for the latter a few years later). It was there I met a fellow Smash enthusiast from a neighbouring municipality. I even brought my Switch to play against them on the last day, being absolutely destroyed by them. While we never spoke again after that day, I still have fond memories regardless. Up to that point, I had been watching YEET Smash amongst other TH-cam channels with clips pertaining to Smash matches and their funny and chaotic moments. I even watched players like Little Z and ZeRo (who will be important later on) and their content around Smash, as well as Aaronitmar's videos on the origins of the characters of the Smash Bros. series and their palette swaps. I had also partcipated in various tournaments hosted by my high school's video game club up to that point as well. I had serious aspirations to become involved in Smash myself, either as a player or a volunteer helping these Smash events thrive and stay afloat. And then the pandemic hit. And so did the allegations. Left and right, players and other people in the Smash community were exposed for relations with those not of age (some alleged), including none other than ZeRo. I was appalled by all of it. How could a community be full of such creeps and PDF files? It was then that I decided that moving forward, I would distance myself from the community and focus on other endeavours. Despite this, I did revisit the Smash series every now and then, like watching more of Aaronitmar's videos. I even watched Charlie aka MoistCr1TiKaL aka penguinz0 stream Smash tournaments, as well as him reacting to the situation surrounding Dr. Alan, Panda Global, Nintendo, and the rest of the Smash community. Now, in the present day, what role does the Smash series play in my life? Well, it helped me get into several competitive scenes of other games and series, including other fighting games and Mario Kart. Heck, I would even say it played a role into getting me into speedrunning, of which several speedrunners also participate in the competitive scene, like Fuzzyness (though he started with Smash), who I spotted in the video and recognised immediately. Without Smash, I don't know where'd I be, honestly. But that's how the world is, I guess. Another great video from you, Clyde "Mr. Moustache Man". I loved the recollection of memories from you getting into and being involved in the competitive scene. My sincerest condolences to your dear friend Michael Blair and his family as well. While I will never feel the grief and pain endured by those close to him, it warms my heart knowing that Smash is brought you together. Despite my views on the community, one word best describes the community as a whole: resiliency. In the end, the Smash community is just like any other: full of passionate people who wish to share that passion with the whole world. Overall, this has been a intriguing ride thus far and hopefully I'll be in it for the long haul. I am eager to watch the next video in this series about Nintendo, because whatever it may be, it will an intriguing video to watch. P.S. Oh wow I was mentioned by Clyde. 😱🤣
Josh Josh Joshhhhh!! I'm so glad you enjoyed the episode. ❤️ It's cool that you have such distinct memories of running into Ultimate players and the earlier games in the series. I'm right there with you ... those were some of my favorite moments with friends growing up. Also, I'm SO freaking happy you spotted Fuzzy -- I watch a lot of his streams on Twitch when he's speedrunning various games. (I watched him grind Quest 64 for a couple weeks and LOVED it.) Do you stream on Twitch? Either way, I'd love to hop in Discord sometime and pick your brain about your experiences with Mario Kart! 🙏
On games that gave me community- the one that will always come to mind is Second Life made by Linden Lab. It is less a "game" with goals and quests and more of a self-contained 3d chat platform, think something like VRChat or Garry's Mod. I was an avid SL user for nearly twelve years, until I wasn't. Over a decade of people, places, events. Stories I crafted with others, art I made and shared, others I thought I'd keep in contact with for years on end- that I sometimes miss but never enough to return. Second Life is a platform where users create the world. You want land? You gotta edit the terrain. Buildings? Avatars? Items such as vehicles and weapons, props and games, combat systems and media players? Pull up the in-world build menu and use the provided primitive shapes of cubes, spheres, toruses, pyramids and cones, do some "prim torture" to change the shape drastically, upload textures and chance colors, add custom sounds and handmade animations, write a script to make it move. Later updates would let users import mesh from programs like Blender, Maya, or 3DS Max, and many would share or sell developer kits for their items, so that other users could "addon" to what already existed. Hell, if you were gifted enough at programming you could make your own client [called a third party viewer] and show an entirely different view of the grid. Firestorm for tweaking every little detail of the UI, Black Dragon for taking stunning pictures, Radagast as the one and only text-only viewer if you were blind and still wanted a way into SL- just to name a few. You can create and do anything if you put your mind to it, all it takes is time and effort. You can create and do anything, and too many people used it to perpetuate harm. Linden Lab is not your friend. Trigger warning for mentions of abuse. For a bit of quick background, my first forays into the internet were not safe ones. I very quickly found myself among predators of children and animals as a teenager and young adult, not directly espousing their legit dangerous desires but playing it off as "things that happen sometimes" or hiding behind dogwhistles of "its just a weird fetish/kink, this is TRUE queerness and if you're against that you're just a puritan!" etc. I know better now, predators have no place in the queer community and if you find one get them the fuck out- but it took years for me to understand. Around the time I was coming to understand that predators were a bad thing, I noticed that a lot of the more popular sims [sim being slang for a self contained plot of land on the map] of the adult variety were catering specifically to predators. Searching up "horse" or "dog" or "wolf", because in the 2010's there'd been an explosion of feral avatars and people wanted to play as animals, would net plots of land dedicated to zoophilia, either with other avatars or with static objects in all the poses one could want. It was much the same if you wanted to relive or create a better childhood for oneself, to pretend to be younger and have fun- there exists a "dark corner", though it is easy enough to find if you know how to look. Thing is that these are all against the LL TOS, but Linden Lab does not care. They have not cared even as I have tried to report various people and places for openly promoting such things, nor about racist remarks or people using legitmate nazi imagery. I remember meeting a user by the name of Tapple Gao, head scripter behind the highly popular Breeder's Choice and Teegle riding horses and horse avatar brand, who invited me and others multiple times to their private sim. When I went in about 2016-ish, it was all naked child avatars with genitals, among animal avatars, and it was all presented as "a nudist colony". In about 2019/2020 I finally told the staff at Teegle, and third party creators who had made items for the horses, and sent a report to Linden Lab. LL did nothing, the community didn't want to leave the brand that had given them so much, and why are you against nudism, and even if it was it was all online, out-of-the-way so who really cares, there's Real Issues at hand. The BC/Teegle staff gaslit me, told me to apologize for slandering their friend and that anything I saw had been blown wildly out of proportion. The group-wide announcements came through, not to believe any lies about their beloved scripter being a bad person. Then I was banned from their sims, but by that point I wanted nothing to do with them. Then in late February of this year, an article came to light. The only way i have found to reliably bypass the blur filter over the page is to right click and Select All the text, then copy and paste it into your word editor of choice. I'm still not sure if not being able to do the same to the images included is better or worse. web.archive.org/web/20240229134736/medium.com/@dantesedmond1844/the-reality-of-second-lifes-ageplay-problem-73de059b4af4 Linden Lab fucking hates this article. Anyone who shared it on their forums got a warning from the "moles", Linden Labs' forum moderators, their thread deleted and comments about it removed. Anyone who shared it to the user-run news sites was deemed lying, that any evidence was suspect. Sharing it among average users was a repeat of what I had experienced trying to expose Tapple Gao, but on a wider scale. It was all a lie, just stirring up drama. Friends I knew for over a decade shrugged it off, and one in particular dismissed it because Second Life was the one thing that made her happy. I shared the article to as many people and groups in-world as i could, cut my contacts one by one, waited for the warnings of getting banned to roll in, and then deleted my account in early March. Considering the whole nothing that happened when I tried to report Tapple to the actual police, I left that avenue alone. Linden Lab is not your friend.
Thank you for sharing your experiences with Second Life, Raven. Likewise, I'm sorry to hear that you encountered abusive behavior in that space; I hadn't seen the article (or heard about the news you shared) before, but I'll definitely check it out. 🙏 I was always more "goal" oriented with my games, which is why Second Life never appealed to me. I played the absolute HECK out of Runescape back in the day, but it was pretty much my only "MMO" game until Maplestory / World of Warcraft. 😅 There is a part of me that feels like I've "missed out" by not experiencing a creative game like the one you've described: games like Second Life (and definitely Minecraft today) offer players the ability to do so much to the world itself, and that's something I've always felt was lacking in my other online games. That said, it's beyond disheartening to hear that the company behind Second Life hasn't done a great job of protecting its players. I appreciate you spotlighting this behavior and for sharing your perspective! If I ever do an episode on this company, I'll keep you in mind!
It just kinda shows that Nintendo hates anything fan made and community made,if pokemon nuzlock got people in the Nintendo tree house get into trouble kinda shows that if ya ain't playing the game how nintendo wants it or it hurts there visión, they'll strike it out or tell you no with a big fuck you along with it, I've heard that they see melee as a mistake and don't want it to be used for anything, sure every game has its bugs but melee is kinda special, and Nintendo hates that.
Yuuup, I was also blown away by the story about them getting cranky about pokemon players doing nuzlock runs. Like, how controlling can one company get with their games? 😭 Thank you for sharing your thoughts and for checking out the video Hedgehog Mario! ❤️
Nintendo behaves as if the REST of the world operates exactly the same as Japan. Nintendo is why emulators and roms are illegal in Japan. Nintendo is why modding consoles is illegal in Japan. Nintendo has shown as clear directive that you have to play how Nintendo Deems Appropriate. I am stuck with Nintendo for the time being because I honesty adore Splatoon and Metroid. The Switch also single-handedly has the MOST controller options of any console currently on the market. But I am well-aware that they will crush fan events, streamers, and content creators if we barely step out of line. The TOS for streaming was changed recently and now I'm unsure if the n3DSXL+capture card I literally crowdfunded last month would put me in jephordy for streaming. I go to absurd lengths to play on original hardware with original game copies. I have re-soldered traces on a disgusting copy of Earthbound that I got out of the trash that I had to deep-clean and disinfect. I play with ABYSMAL video quality when streaming Gamecube titles because I can't afford a Carby. I am actively working to find new non-nintendo franchises and developers that have games on PC and buy used as much as possible. Because Nintendo still hasn't changed. I don't want to financially support a company that actively hates its own fans.
Correction: the act of modding a console in and of itself isn't illegal in Japan due to their equivalent of the First Sale Doctrine. It's _charging to mod other people's consoles_ that's illegal in Japan.
stop lying. they just shutdown a couple of fan pkmn games from JP some months ago when it's free to download. Rules don't apply to Nintendo when they want to be petty. 😂😂😂@@aetheralmeowstic2392
Dude! I almost cried! Smash is really my favorite franchise! As a suggestion for your next video, please point out that the video promoting NSO shows a [?] block turning into a [?] block with a different art style (when Mario runs up hitting icons that represents NSO features).
14:24 - This is starting to happen again with rivals 2 and the game isn’t even out yet. I see melee, ultimate, rivals 1, and PM/P+ players all clashing and the devs actually care about their game. It’s how we got the set of leffen getting knowledge checked with kragg cheese from rivals 1 on stream at genesis (To be fair kragg was absolutely busted in that early build but it was still funny)
17:25 This feels straight-up illegal. Not only was the entire thing pretty much a bribe in the first place, if Nintendo didn't hold up they're end of the deal, then the tournament probably would've had grounds for legal action. I am not a lawyer, and there was probably some loophole that Nintendo used to get away from this scott-free, nor do I know anything about the incident aside from what was talked about in the video. But you'd think that anyone could look at this and see that this is not only morally wrong, but also probably illegal.
Completely agree with you eyesistorm, and I'll say: I learned about that specific incident from Vigilante and Sabre, and they explained that the "deal" (or sponsorship) didn't entail a whole lot in the way of compensation for the Melee scene. I think it's sad that the Melee tournament organizers were just SO desperate to get in Nintendo's good graces that they felt they had to make such a deal, even at the cost of the Project M scene. 😭 That said, if I come across any additional sources / articles on this, I'll add them in a comment! ❤️
I love a trillion Nintendo games but no company is your friend. Priority is always money. So you're spot on. That doesnt mean you can't love the games as long as you dont pretend like they're saints imo. Great video!
Smash World Tour thing is actually a bit more complicated when you actually start digging, especially when you consider that VGBC wasn't the ONLY group trying to get a license, there was also Panda Global. that said, while the details still make Nintendo look very scummy, it doesn't exactly paint the VGBC faction of the Smash Community in a good light... the youtuber Technicals goes into a fair amount of depth going over how some of the Smash community have some REALLY bad apples that are on too high a pedestal to be tarnished... hell, just MENTIONING Technicals around some of these folks are bound to get you some interesting looks. all that said, I did also meet some good friends through the local scenes, I did attend some majors later, but I do admit most of the experience was more that it was just as much a Smash fan convention as it was a tourney.
41:40 *OH YOU CANNOT SELL WATER? WHAT ELSE, ENTRANCE REQUIRES 3 MINUTE LONG STRANGULATION? THOSE LAWYERS SHOULD BE IN JAIL FOR VIOLATING THE MOST ESSENTIAL HUMAN RIGHTS ON THE PLANET*
Currently binging all your content and it’s awesome- but just came here to say that there is a dinosaur language key in the Starfox Adventures manual. My friend and I used to write notes to each other in class using that key.
WHAT! That's wild that it's an actual language!! I didn't know that Mookie!! I always thought it was just made-up garbleddegook with occasional western words thrown in. 😅 Thank you for sharing!! Maybe I'll learn it myself and hide a message in a future episode ... 🔥
The Allegations were really shocking during that time, I've also heard Alpharad Left the Smash Community after discovering about that and other toxic stuff that happened. Nowadays I enjoy Super Smash Bros casually, Other than that, this was a really good video.
dude I see you everywhere on every platform any time anyone has anything even a little negative about nintendo. do you like, do anything other than run around looking for people who don't like nintendo? are you employed by them?
@@No_Life_Alex I'm usually on both sides nowadays, Although besides that I did expose Weegeepie again, developing a video calling out A.S.K. Air after his awful modern cartoon take video, getting excited for Marvel vs Capcom collection, Live stream astrobot playroom on my PS5 and other stuff.
I'm glad that Nintendo Online is the next topic because their are so many features that Nintendo forces people to pay for like getting you satchel back in Legends Arceus requires you to have an Online membership so that you can get back the stuff you lost when you die. Also trading Pokémon in games requires an online membership. Any Nintendo game with features that require an internet connection automatically requires a membership and it so annoying. Like you can't even access the course world in SMM2 if you don't' have Nintendo online. They could have made it like X-box Game pass and only made you have to have a membership when you want to play the games they offer but they straight up denied a lot of things that should be free.
@NotYourFriend-YT Thanks! I have to admit, your content is really addictive lol The second I'm finished watching one of your vids. I have the urge to watch another one! Thanks for making these vids!
I started getting into Smash more with Ultimate and watching high level players content on youtube which started getting bigger and bigger until the big boom of allegations and after that the community felt dead to me. My first Smash I played was Brawl but never got into the online scene for it (because it was horrible) but I did enjoy playing level 9 CPU's with Pikachu being my original main and then switching to Sonic which I continued to main on Ultimate and is also why I never got into Melee.
That's amazing, I'm happy to hear that Vantoxify!! There was actually a big rumor going around for a long time that Sonic was in Melee as some sort of "hidden" character, but it was just a prank. 😅 I'm glad you've had a good time playing Ultimate!!
Also, yeah RS was my first fav. Well, as I've said before I'm a Final Fantasy Fan, so I guess RS was my first fav. On PC. I still miss my lv. 92 char and having my mining, wc, fishing, and combat skills all around 70. Getting my beloved Abyssal Whip, the GE being created and totally revamping trade, becoming like a stock market....Omg Idk if I even can access that acc still lol. Btw next big fav. Was WoW. =) Thanks to anybody for asking lol
Man growing up when melee got into evo was insane i know the fgc didn't like that smash took over part of the event because some fgc people want to keep it just fighting games. I got into smash completively due to it. i was bad at melee when 4 came out i wasn't too bad saw a local at pastime legends one of the stores that hosted tournaments there was now where i lived and i went there i was getting bopped but over time got better was able to get into top 8s but overtime it died down and the store wanted to change its way. Went to evo met some of the pros who were outted later down the line played almost made it out of pools met a lot of awesome people thanks to this games. When 2020 happened my mind shattered seeing that pros whether fgc or smash did some horrible stuff being outted the people i took photos with and some who were at the local. It sucks that now if you mentioned smash people will mention this i didn't want to touch smash and i had trust issues with anyone i associated in these communities because after all that, it was great that they are making the community safe and got rid of the dangers better than ignoring it but now this gave people the ability to remove they didn't like by making false allegations and witch hunts making people walk on eggshells if they said anything i mean look how hbox when he reacted to the aegis trailer.thankfully technicals came in and is causing the community to be put on check. Though during this I remember a few mods that brought my love for smash back. Pm plus and another mod for the 64 smash remix seeing pm with knuckles was fun me and my friends clash constantly and lastly smash remix for the 64 it brought the hype i got for characters again seeing characters you don't normally see like banjo bowser mewtwo sonic in the 64 go against the og 12. These mods made me remember the fun with the friends i have in my circle is all i need and its fine you can still like the game but don't have to be associated with a part of the competitive community. I do miss the old days of just playing pm and fighting games with friends until 3am but now a days we hardly have time to hang out but when we do it feels like we never left even our trips to evo haven't changed. A great video and my condolences about your friend.
Thank you for the kind words Jesus 🙏 and likewise, I'm *SO* happy to hear you've had a good time with Smash and even got to meet some pros at Evo! That's epic! I actually thought about including Smash 64 Remix at one point because like you said, it's a really incredible mod (all the characters blow my mind) 😂 Thank you again for being a friend sharing your memories, it makes me incredibly happy to hear Smash has had a positive impact on your life!
@@NotYourFriend-YT you're very welcome I look forward to your next video and future projects. Yeah so many things happened thanks to smash even got on the news once during a smash bros cosplay gathering. It's a fun community whether it's for art, cosplay or playing the game competitively or for fun
@28:20 I was half expecting you to say "and manifest channels with series' called Nintendo is not your friend" in there. 🍭 Your tale about the homiestock was really touching and made me d'aw, that's the kind of stuff sweet memories are made of that we cling to for our entire life. c: It's cute, yaknow? Condolences for dear Michael too. u~u I know what it's like to lose somebody ya adore, and had a nice long history of fun with... I can tell, especially that quivering voice that's trying not to cry. I'm here for you bro. My heart broke listening to that. Well, since ya asked for some memories at a little tournament, I have a few! In a small, local tournament here that was held by some group of friends and martial artists, they were playing Smash Bros. Melee, and my elder brother won. Mom immediately said he only won without challenge because his other siblings (me and my younger brother) weren't in it. It was cute, she had really broken English. But I still wonder if we could've smashed his face. >XD I was too shy and antisocial at the time (14) to partake, nor was I a martial artist outside of some light Tai Chi Kwan (swordplay)... But some time later in the Blazblue fight scene, it was still young and I was pretty much like yourself, a 0-2er no name loser who got clapped. But I stuck around and I became friends with a few people! One of them was the biggest (at the time) Bang Shishigami player on the scene and he'd wind up being a hobo buddy for a few years that sometimes slept around the yard. Another player was a pretty lean Noel, and this story's a bit more odd, cause I thought he was a kool dude, made top 3, never saw him again until recently (barely 6 months ago) by alignment of the stars, a vtuber I met mentioned he used to play Blazblue and was a Noel... Nowadays I reminisce with him about old Blazblue tech and how new kids have it good. And the last one, he was a big fighting game nerd I didn't meet in a tournament cause he goes to ones way bigger than me, but he was a King of Fighters and Tekken dude; taught me some mean combos. Whipped me in Smash Ultimate. A big lumberjack of a man who coached a lotta his friends and showed support to them in tournaments; I dunno the specific ones he went into because I was shy to ask, but he helped me prepare for some Duelists of Eden bronze tournaments despite not knowing much of the game. He was a loyal friend... and, he passed away July 22nd this year. The literal last photo he ever sent me on the phone, was of him and his dog in bed, watching EVO the day before. .. ..I still cry just thinkin' about Evo nowadays.
I would actively tell my future child "Don't play this game. Just don't" Melee is a great game and all, but when you play it competitively, you realize most ppl are not built for this game at a certain level. It is complete psychological warfare and an assault on one's sanity. Hell no, not letting my kid even know the game exists if possible.
Judging by the channel banner (Presumably this is a hint?), then BOOOOOOOOY HOWDY I can't 'til we start raggin' on ELETRONIC ARTS, baby. You KNOW there's a thing or two to be said!
I feel strongly that all the significant negative events with smash players should reflect negatively on Nintendo and their unwillingness to embrace and regulate the community around their game. Had they embraced, even remotely, they would have taken more ownership of and guided the community and events. Installing some adults, professional organizers, and legitimacy to the events would have been the best way to avoid the predatory issues. Forcing them into obscurity and underground is how you develop breading grounds for other shadowing things. Nintendo deserves some blame for that. IMO It’s a major oversight of the community for not addressing it that way.
I'm Smash fan, but solo player. Whole my 3DS time I played Smash Run. But but whenever I heard news about Smash community it's either secont do stinkiest people (YuGiOh takes first place) or very bad dramas. And closing tournaments because of modding are smallest ones
I'm glad you had fun with Smash Run, x149te!! I didn't have Smash on my 3DS so I unfortunately missed out on it 😭 I loved all the minigames from the earlier games in the series, stuff like break the targets / adventure mode ❤️
Oh btw, you definetly need to get a little bit of some noise removing on your audio, I hear very slight noise constantly on the mix recording. Some good ones are literally free (AI of course, bet you're tired of hearing THAT word every time), even the bad ones work quite well. Otherwise, awesome video as always!
Thank you for mentioning this Luke ... I KNEW I wasn't crazy ... I could have sworn I was hearing a faint hiss / static-y noise. I'll definitely work on improving this for the next episode. 🙏
Nintendo's treatment of it's fans is why I've refused to support them for over the past decade. I have literally never seen a game company shoot itself in the foot, both financially and PR-wise, more than Nintendo. They are their own worst enemy.
howdy VGTM and thank you for checking out the video 👋 I have really fond memories of Harry Potter growing up (my dad used to read the books to my sister and I), but I've not kept up with it after JK Rowling started becoming more outspoken on twitter 😭 Were you a fan of the series / movies growing up? I feel like it's a tough topic that so many fans (and former fans) are grappling with, even today ❤️
Can we spawn a copypasta and revive the smash board with (in italic font) "has entered the chat sent by Mustache Man" Already done my part on the Montreal board :)
Hey, this is wildly off topic, but I liked that song you used when talking about your friend - Awful Things. But it looks like the specific version you used is a cover. I tried looking it up, but only got the (presumably original) Lil Peep version, which has a much different tone. Do you mind letting me know who sang this version?
I'm glad you enjoyed the cover! I actually commissioned it from a musician on Fiverr named WolleysBlues. If you would like a link to the MP3, here it is! drive.google.com/file/d/1q1Sbkcav3p_zFNYmRL9EaREBNRr-7H1V/view?usp=sharing
@@NotYourFriend-YT Thank you so much for the link! Much appreciated! And loving your Nintendo videos btw. Pretty much saying everything long-time Nintendo fans like me have been increasingly frustrated with in recent years. I can only hope that as the old generation starts to be phased out and the torch is passed that they will become a liiittle more consumer friendly while also keeping the charm, whimsy, and care for their work that drew us all in to begin with.
I think it's incredibly dishonest that people love to frame situations like this as a David and Goliath of the loving brotherly community against big bad evil corporation considering the track record of everything that the Smash "community" has done.
Howdy Bailey, and thank you for checking out the video. In no way do I want to frame Smash as a perfect, do-no-wrong community: in fact, I talk in this video about the toxicity / competitiveness in the scene, as well as the allegations of abuse that came to light in 2020. Above all else, I've tried to share my personal experience growing up playing melee, while also not lying to ourselves about the real harm that people within the scene have caused. Just because this community has been a safe place for me, has given me some of my best friends in the world, etc., doesn't mean that it's true for everyone. I don't ever want to invalidate someone else's experiences, nor would I want to tell them their trauma isn't real. I believe strongly that the overwhelming majority of the people in the Smash community are warm, friendly people that just want to play their favorite video games. They scream at tournaments, they geek out over merch, and they show incredible resolve in the face of a company that continues to try and shut them down. This may not be your experience with the Smash scene, and if that's the case I'm sorry to hear that. All I can do is speak my truth and try to be a good human with the friends I've made over the years.
That poke at the start was almost catastrophic. XD 20:00 Classic. "Please brain, don't embarrass me in front of my idol" *gets embarrassed in front of said idol* LOL Zelgadis, what a nice dude. Nintendo's reaction to tournaments is so insane. I knew some of it, but not the details, OMG. RIP to your fiend. :( I wish Nintendo were like Valve and not like Disney.
Thank you for the kind words RoyHyaku ❤️ And yeah ... I was fumbling SO BADLY with those glasses for whatever reason, I thought it was funny so I just put it in the episode 😂
Can I ask for clarification on something? When you said some of the organizers like gimr are still recovering from getting screwed by Nintendo, that's after and unrelated to the PM shut downs right?
yah that's right, my apologies for the confusion Chombey - they posted on reddit about a year ago on their current status, and how they're trying to re-build themselves up: www.reddit.com/r/smashbros/comments/11u01c0/the_future_of_vg_bootcamp_gimr_update_post/
The smash community has a lot of allegations with the way it which it handles minors, sa, and other things. I will be honest I can't really blame wanting them to have strict guidelines on tourneys. There isn't a good system in terms of bans. Looking at happened with the double standard of how hax vs leffen is treated...
That's fair ScarAtlas, and I appreciate you spotlighting those issues. I tried to talk about the situation in 2020 when many of the allegations came to light, but you're absolutely right--I hope that tournament organizers, staff, and everyone will work hard to make it a safer place for everyone 🙏
Bonded with face to face friends over pretty much any game. Met 3 of my online friends through monster hunter and 2 over Dead by Daylight's reddit. Games really do connect, like any other hobby can too.
Happy to hear it Sebastian!! I played a little bit back when I was a teenager. I think it was mostly mono-blue decks for me (I loved using counterspell) haha ❤️
What does Nintendo think of the Japanese side of this? I've always been curious. Does Japan do tournaments like this and Nintendo just looks the other way? I could see xenophobia playing a part.
That's a great point, I should've talked about Japan's approach to competitive video game tournaments in the video, but I didn't think to. 😭 My understanding is that they're somehow even *more* restrictive than western countries on this topic, but I could be wrong! That said, I'll work this into a future episode and loop back on it. Thank you for catching that! 🙏
Your coverage of SWT seems very biased, as it completely ignores just how badly run their entire operation was. (They tried to do a global circuit while sandbagging their license application to literally two months before the circuit would start, while other tournaments put in their applications literal years earlier. This is also not even mentioning just how poorly their events were run, to the point of not even having security.)
Howdy Heavy, and thank you for checking out the video 👋 I think we're probably looking at different sources, because the statement that Smash World Tour put out says they applied for a tournament license with Nintendo on April 9th, a full seven months before November: medium.com/@smashworldtour/smash-world-tour-official-statement-f568a3d135c8 Please let me know if I've misinterpreted this source or if I'm reading this incorrectly; the last thing I want to do is spread misinformation when it comes to this scene! Edit: I see what you're saying, that the circuit itself began two months after their application. That's helpful context, thank you for pointing it out!
I really like how you not just saying Nintendo bad, but making an entire chanel dedicated to laying out everything that is wrong with Nintendo. I would also love to hear what you have to say about other game companies as well. Hell you could make entire channels dedicated to EA is not your friend or any other gaming company. Sony is also so out of touch its not even funny.
I’ve been a Nintendo fan for a long time, and I knew about this. It’s a shame how much they don’t care about their fans, but hey, greedy companies gonna be greedy
Yup, right there with you V-cran. I hope that someday (hopefully not too far in the future) they can reflect on how they're treating all these fans and communities and learn to do better! 🙏
Nice vid It is sad how nintendo acts to the community and its not only for smash but things and decision they make. i love nintendo but i also hate them yk.
I didn't realize your birthday was in July. Well happy (belated) birthday, James!! 🥳 As long as we don't get any C&Ds on my bday I think I'll consider myself lucky 😂
Nothing Nintendo does will actually push people away. They will keep buying their products regardless of quality or however much they actually demonstrate that they hate their fans. It's a really unfortunate situation.
@@AraleNorimaki-b1c sometimes, it does feel like Nintendo execs could kick a child and people whould come up with excuses for them. I still think keeping them accountable is important, but also 100% undersrand the frustration.
Can you make a video on Rovio? (People who made angry birds) they unlisted there games including the original angry birds and angry birds space Star Wars and rio. (They relisted the original angry birds but it’s not the same as the original it has less content and they charge for it)
Howdy Goal!! The original song is "Lil Peep - Awful Things" but I commissioned this cover from an artist on Fiverr. I've got a link to download the MP3 here if you'd like a copy! drive.google.com/file/d/1q1Sbkcav3p_zFNYmRL9EaREBNRr-7H1V/view?usp=sharing
I know this isn't really the topic of the video, but have you tried rivals of aether? It's really fun and they have a new game in the series coming out soon.
I haven't yet, but I've watched gameplay footage of Rivals 2 and it looks SO good. I really like the movement ... I think I'll give it a try!! Do you have a favorite character in the game, Davin? ❤️
@@NotYourFriend-YT I main Ranno currently, but Claren is a close second an far as the base roster goes. But someone in the fan workshop in the first game put the hornet from Hollow Knight into it and she's my favorite workshop character.
28:34 and this is one of these reasons i will hate Nintendo for the rest of my life and even if i never even played Melee i can totally understand how frustrating this situation had to be for all Melee players and I don’t care how many people tell me out of pure nostalgia that Nintendo has „the right to do this“ and that it’s „there choice what happens with there IPS“ if this company wants to cancel official tournaments in a worldwide pandemic just because „ThEy UsE aN iLlEgAl CoPy Of ThE gAmE!“ and then don’t want to give the Melee players a alternative with maybe putting Melee in the Nintendo Online service with some other Gamecube titles or just re-releasing the game as a simple port I wouldn’t even complain but Nintendo is the most a$$ backwards company I’ve ever seen and i hate how they treat there IP‘s so much that i sometimes wish they would get so much losses that they don’t have another choice then listening to there oldest fans! :(
Yuuup, I agree with you 100% Medoka. 👏 I would TOTALLY purchase a copy of Melee on Switch, but with them refusing to port it, it makes playing it really hard without the use of backups. 😭
23:03 It's not cringe, it's cute, heck Final Fantasy VII's remake shows protagonists with that kind of interaction. If you say it's cringe you're a freak.
Kinda disappointed that this only covered the Melee (and Melee adjacent) side of things since it leaves out a lot of context from the wider Smash community (both positive and negative). Melee is a very important game in the series but it's not the be all end all, and it's competitive scene doesn't exist in a vaccum. I know this video is already super long so keeping your scope focused on just one thing was probably the most practical, you also seem to be a Melee player so it's obviously easier for you to talk about that side of the scene, and yet I think relagating mentions of Brawl, Sm4sh, and Ultimate to essentially "things that exist and that aren't very good" and "most of the allegations of 2020 were about these guys" wasn't the right direction to take it. Edit: For example one big thing you lose out on by neglecting to mention the rest of the scene is the fact that EVERY Smash game was present as Apex 2015. You paint it as if they wanted to promote their new game and so pushed away something based in the old, and yet Melee, Brawl, and even 64 were all present.
Howdy Fin, thank you for sharing that feedback. 🙏 It is exactly like you said-Melee was really the only Smash game that I played heavily (certainly the only one that I attended tournaments for), so it is the one I feel most comfortable speaking about / representing in a TH-cam video. That said, I think you're absolutely right-the other games in the Smash series are so incredibly important for the scene and have their own rich histories as well! Likewise, I apologize if it came across that I was describing those games as collectively bad or unplayable. I think Brawl has some serious design flaws, but even I can acknowledge there's great parts of it (I lost my mind seeing Sonic for the first time, and Subspace Emissary was a real treat.) As far as the 2020 controversy being about "those guys", I think we're going to have to agree to disagree about how I represented it in the video. I made it clear that Melee personalities played a part in the controversy, and that it while it was lesser it was still unacceptable. I wanted to acknowledge that it happened, express that it was terrible, and also be real about where the most harm was. Here's the main article that I sourced / checked notes on for this topic: www.ssbwiki.com/2020_Super_Smash_Bros._sexual_misconduct_allegations My goal is and has always been: talk about what I know, point out the anti-consumer yuckiness that exists, and try to make people laugh and talk about it. I hope this video gave you one or more of those things, and I'll try to do even better in the future to represent topics more thoroughly!
@@NotYourFriend-YT Sorry if I didn't make myself clear. My highlighting of the allegation section wasn't to say it shouldn't have been included, but that due to the fact the video heavily focuses on Melee alone it creates an unfortunate scenario where the only time Ultimate is highlighted in the video is regarding said controversy, and gives the vibe of "that's all there is." Obviously this is my interpretation, I don't believe you had any malicious intent. I also hope I'm not sounding too entitled, I did very much enjoy this video and learnt a lot about things from before I entered the Competitive Smash scene in late 2017. I just feel like, considering that this video is about highlighting how dedicated and positive the Smash Melee community is, it would've been nice if some positivity was shown for the Ultimate scene. Not to cover up the negatives but to stand alongside them, in the same way the triumphs of the Melee community sit alongside it's failures. Again I do hope I'm not coming off too strongly and this could very well just be my perspective skewed from the fact that while I do participate in both scenes I tend to learn more towards Ultimate. Glad you took the chance to reply to my comment though.
Great video! And, boy oh boy, I don't like Nintendo. I really don't understand how they can make some of the most polished and fun games, while also being so evil with their community. I mean, it wouldn't be so hurtful or annoying if the attitudes depicted came from companies like EA or such, because we all know they are assholes, haha.
Thank you for the kind words Pestigirioso ❤️ and yah, I agree .. I hope they can learn to treat a lot of these communities better, and even celebrate their awesome accomplishments. I've been thinking about the next company to talk about in the series, so let me know if you have any ideas! (EA is definitely on my short list, though ...) 😂
@@NotYourFriend-YT EA, there's also Microsoft shutting down Tango Works; Ubisoft, releasing half baked stuff and asking extra money for pre release access that doesn't work. Oh, or Activision sending a cease and desist letter to the creators of H2M or something like that for Call of Duty. And I forgot to mention, cheers from a newer fellow fgc community, in my case, SF saga. Be calm, I'm not an elitist, in my eyes, platformers are fighting games, haha
What games have introduced you to friends in your life? (I think it's safe to say that Melee and Runescape were the biggest two for me back in the day) 🥳

Games don’t introduce me to people - I introduce games to people
I started playing Final Fantasy XIV about 7 or 8 months ago, and I've been blown away by how amazing and friendly and welcoming the community is.
Thanks for having us! Happy to represent PM.

I feel much the same. I understand if they don't want to recognize our mod. I just want our fans to be able to play it in peace.
To this day, Nintendo is regularly kicking themselves that they didn’t leave our community alone as it is _promoting_ their games, sure they can’t make money off _melee_ specifically but it very well could lead people in the direction of their other games, or even ultimate

Nintendo’s War on Competitive Smash is literally that meme of the stick figure yelling “STOP HAVING FUN!!!” I hate Nintendo so much for it.
What needs to happen is an attempted takedown being met with a lawsuit for damages. Make the act of punching our art piece castles actually _hurt._
I cannot take Nintendo seriously.
20:56 also the Homie Stock, absolutely the best story

Do you stream on Twitch?

Linden Lab fucking hates this article.
I was always more "goal" oriented with my games, which is why Second Life never appealed to me. I played the absolute HECK out of Runescape back in the day, but it was pretty much my only "MMO" game until Maplestory / World of Warcraft. 😅
There is a part of me that feels like I've "missed out" by not experiencing a creative game like the one you've described: games like Second Life (and definitely Minecraft today) offer players the ability to do so much to the world itself, and that's something I've always felt was lacking in my other online games.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and for checking out the video Hedgehog Mario! ❤️
And it’s all the fault of that STUPID DMCA bot!
Thank you for the suggestion Bach!! Also, I always appreciate you checking out the videos and for sharing your helpful ideas.
That said, if I come across any additional sources / articles on this, I'll add them in a comment! ❤️
I love a trillion Nintendo games but no company is your friend. Priority is always money. So you're spot on.
That doesnt mean you can't love the games as long as you dont pretend like they're saints imo.

Thank you for the big laugh dunkdon, you're the best 😂
If you're not shouting Mango when the sex goes too hard, you're doing it wrong. I agree.
Most underrated TH-camr ever

In many places it's illegal to put a price on water since it is one of the most vital things for survival.
Imagine they end up just giving water bottles out for free and they _still_ get shut down by Nintendo.
Your friend Michael/Blair... his pic almost reminds me of the Tom from Myspace pic, like it's a parody. lol!
Currently binging all your content and it’s awesome- but just came here to say that there is a dinosaur language key in the Starfox Adventures manual. My friend and I used to write notes to each other in class using that key.

i hope, one day go to a smash Tournament, look's fun.
Yesssss, I'm hyped you're excited for it allstar!! 👏 I'll be touching on all of this and more in the episode to come. :DDD

@NotYourFriend-YT Thanks! I have to admit, your content is really addictive lol
The second I'm finished watching one of your vids.
I am out of my home country for 6 years now.
And the thing I miss the most is melee.
This is an amazing video of Nintendo being crapheels and a bunch of cool memories from you. It's so cool to see that stuff.

I actually thought about including Smash 64 Remix at one point because like you said, it's a really incredible mod (all the characters blow my mind) 😂

Smash was one of those I always meant to learn how to play, but never did.
@28:20 I was half expecting you to say "and manifest channels with series' called Nintendo is not your friend" in there. 🍭
Your tale about the homiestock was really touching and made me d'aw, that's the kind of stuff sweet memories are made of that we cling to for our entire life. c: It's cute, yaknow?

XD

The smash community has a lot of allegations with the way it which it handles minors, sa, and other things. I will be honest I can't really blame wanting them to have strict guidelines on tourneys. There isn't a good system in terms of bans. Looking at happened with the double standard of how hax vs leffen is treated...

What does Nintendo think of the Japanese side of this? I've always been curious. Does Japan do tournaments like this and Nintendo just looks the other way? I could see xenophobia playing a part.

Howdy Heavy, and thank you for checking out the video 👋 I think we're probably looking at different sources, because the statement that Smash World Tour put out says they applied for a tournament license with Nintendo on April 9th, a full seven months before November: medium.com/@smashworldtour/smash-world-tour-official-statement-f568a3d135c8
Please let me know if I've misinterpreted this source or if I'm reading this incorrectly; the last thing I want to do is spread misinformation when it comes to this scene!
Edit: I see what you're saying, that the circuit itself began two months after their application. That's helpful context, thank you for pointing it out!

I didn't realize your birthday was in July. Well happy (belated) birthday, James!! 🥳
As long as we don't get any C&Ds on my bday I think I'll consider myself lucky 😂

(They relisted the original angry birds but it’s not the same as the original it has less content and they charge for it)
What's the song at the community montage?
Howdy Goal!! The original song is "Lil Peep - Awful Things" but I commissioned this cover from an artist on Fiverr. I've got a link to download the MP3 here if you'd like a copy! drive.google.com/file/d/1q1Sbkcav3p_zFNYmRL9EaREBNRr-7H1V/view?usp=sharing
@@NotYourFriend-YT Thank you so much, friend!

Thank you for the kind words Shuckle, I appreciate you as always ❤️
I think Brawl has some serious design flaws, but even I can acknowledge there's great parts of it (I lost my mind seeing Sonic for the first time, and Subspace Emissary was a real treat.)
As far as the 2020 controversy being about "those guys", I think we're going to have to agree to disagree about how I represented it in the video. I made it clear that Melee personalities played a part in the controversy, and that it while it was lesser it was still unacceptable. I wanted to acknowledge that it happened, express that it was terrible, and also be real about where the most harm was.
Here's the main article that I sourced / checked notes on for this topic:
www.ssbwiki.com/2020_Super_Smash_Bros._sexual_misconduct_allegations
My goal is and has always been: talk about what I know, point out the anti-consumer yuckiness that exists, and try to make people laugh and talk about it. I hope this video gave you one or more of those things, and I'll try to do even better in the future to represent topics more thoroughly!
@@NotYourFriend-YT Sorry if I didn't make myself clear. My highlighting of the allegation section wasn't to say it shouldn't have been included, but that due to the fact the video heavily focuses on Melee alone it creates an unfortunate scenario where the only time Ultimate is highlighted in the video is regarding said controversy, and gives the vibe of "that's all there is."
Obviously this is my interpretation, I don't believe you had any malicious intent.
No worries, and thank YOU fin for sharing your insights and perspective! You are appreciated! 👏
Not Your Friend, wanna collab keep up the great content

I'm not sure myself, but a comment on the original video (th-cam.com/video/7D401VnMCLc/w-d-xo.html) says it's a show in Singapore called "Crimewatch"!
