    Never understood how this could be vaguely compared to/hyped up to a rivalry with Oasis. Those bands (other than being popular at the same time) were so different. I like them both for what they are, but Blur definitely had much more variety.

      I agree love both bands hate the whole Britpop label made up by the labels but good for sales..... in my opinion blur had way more creativity

    • @MrPicklerwoof
      @MrPicklerwoof 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Oasis always had the upper hand critically due to those first two classic albums (and associated b-sides) during 94-96, which Blur couldn't hold a candle to. But I agree Blur had more variety, consistency and longevity overall. Oasis creatively burned themselves out very early on, but despite really liking Blur I only ever find myself going back to those first two Oasis albums of that era these days.
      Blur's biggest weakness arguably was never producing a magnum opus. I just can't sit and listen from the first track to the last on any of their albums, I just pick and choose one or two from each.

    • @murdockreviews
      @murdockreviews 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@MrPicklerwoof Fair analysis.
      Personlly, I'd say 'Parklife' was their great album moment; and '13' flows the best as an album (but admittedly, it is very experimental compared to the commercial heights of Oasis's first two records).

      @@MrPicklerwoof Blurs leisure is without doubt one of my favourites and I find it a really rewarding listen in its entirety, but I really connect with it because it just takes me back to listening to my walkman on the train going to college. Definitely Maybe is an absolute beautiful album but as we agree comparing blur and oasis is a completely futile exercise as artistically they are so different but equally awesome.

    Underneath the bubblegum feel of this song (or album or band), there is a devastating critique of mid-90's life in Britain/Europe. In this song Damon Albarn (lead vocalist, songwriter) cleverly captured the anything goes mindlessness of the party scene at the time in a way that seems like he's selling it to you while he's sort of horrified by it, given how conscious people still were of AIDS. In spite of what I just wrote, Justine Frischmann, Albarn's girlfriend at the time of writing (and lead singer/songwriter of Elastica) certainly liked to project a slightly androgynous image that made he incredibly attractive.

    I think it says play with whoever; just have fun, avoid judgement and feel free in doing it (safely of course).
    And this comes from the mouth a 65 year old straight man who never finished year 10 in school and lived the hard, hard life.
    If somebody like me can have this outlook, I have great difficulty in understanding what society's problem is.
    As always; love your reactions dear lady.

    Britain in the early 1990s seemed to be in the grip of dance music: House, Techno, Dance-hall, Jungle... but that wasn't all. Blur had enjoyed some success in the UK already, but returned from an American tour exhausted and wanting to delve into our own native rock and roll. The result was the album 'Modern Life is Rubbish', where a combination of post-punk new wave and 1960s English whimsy kickstarted what became known as 'BritPop'. This is one of their larger hits of the period and casts a wry eye at the English tendency to treat holidays in the sun as some kind of fantastical escape.

      It has the vibe yes. But:
      "'Girls & Boys'? Four notes. And the chorus is 'Boys, Girls, Love'. That's quite a universal message, isn't it?"
      -Damon Albarn summing up the song
      Still the chorus is easy to interpret many ways. :)
      Also, like with any art, it's more how it makes you feel, not perhaps how it was intended to make you feel.

      That’s not really what it’s about. It was inspired by Damon Albarn’s experience at a Club 18-30 type vibe while he was out on vacation with his then girlfriend. He felt disgusted by the hedonism and rampant sexual acts but at the same time couldn’t help but be intrigued and maybe wanna join in.

    This is about Club 18-30 holidays which were very popular in the 90s where groups of friends (between ages 18-30) would go to hot holiday resorts in Europe (Greece, Spain etc) to go to clubs & basically sleep with whoever they met. Kind of like a singles holiday with no strings attached. Was a bit sordid I guess.. "You get nasty blisters" refers to STDs!!!
    Check out more Blur.. TO THE END, GHOST SHIP, FOR TOMORROW and COFFEE & TV. Damon Albarn (Singer) is a genius he writes all the songs & is main consistent singer in Gorillaz!

    For some reason, whenever I hear this hit song from the early nineties, two other songs always pop into my head, the Teardrop Explodes' "Sleeping Gas" from 1979 and (even weirder) Barry Gibb's/Frankie Valli's 1978 theme song from "Grease": "Grease is the word, is the word, is the word..." The repetition in the "Grease" chorus is melodically kinda like "Girls who like boys who dig boys like their girls," etc, and there's a similar insanity-inducing melodic loop in the Teardrop Explodes' song ("You can watch Rafferty turn into a serial...").

    It was about sexual fluidity (possibly gender fluidity) but way, way, way back in the 90s…😱
    “Avoiding all work/Cause there’s none available” has a different meaning to, yet pairs well with, Oasis’ Cigarettes and Alcohol lyric “Is it worth the aggravation/To find yourself a job when there's nothing worth working for?”. 👍🏻

    K.S.O., can I brag a little? I will anyway. I was in a hip London club called Smashing where they played this song before it was released. The dance floor went hectic. When we exited at the end of the night via the stairs, I literally bumped into Alex, the bass player. I'm afraid he was very, very drunk. These days he makes cheese somewhere in the countryside.

    The line is, "You've been sectioned, but we haven't been introduced." In British English, "sectioned" means committed to a psychiatric institution. Not sure what the term's inclusion in the song means. If you'd like to hear another song from a sleepy-looking singer from this era and stable, check out the Stone Roses' 1989 hit "Fool's Gold."
