At 71 I have lost many an old friend and family member. Amazing that John Lennon wrote this at a still young age. He was very insightful. Of course he lost his mother at sixteen and I'm sure that played into his writing of this masterpiece. Judy gave a wonderful interpretation of the song.
For all you young people, you have to Remember that this was a Time of Folk Music with just a guitar or backed up with a symphony. A great time, I wish I could go back and live there, Forever, it Was That Good......
At around four decades in, I still only have about six grey hairs. Trust me, this song still has plenty of meaning. But yeah, it's definitely one that gets more poignant with age.
In 1969 and 1970, when I was at the University of Texas, I used to go between classes to the library, where they had two or three July Collins albums that you could listen to on headphones. No matter how many times I listened to her, I was always amazed at the quality of her voice and the emotions that she conveyed in each song. This was one of them.
I am sure that if people's heads were filled with beauty like this, instead of the garbage they are crammed full of today, the world would be a far, far better place.
Your beautiful voice and your deep sincere delivery of this song are as moving as ever. I'm so glad someone put this live recording here for the present generation, so that they can see what real singing is. Thank you Judy
Only a very few Chosen Few, can sing or play music that makes Their Soul shine through. This lady is one of them. I am an old man and just heard of her in this one playback.
When I die (I'm 65, looking ahead) I told my daughter to play 2 songs and think of me. This version by Judy and Somewhere Over the Rainbow by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole. Stevie Knicks Landslide is also special as I used to sign it to here when she was a baby.
listerone. Yes. Stephen Stills wrote that great song, Suite Judy Blue Eyes about her when they had a relationship. But the relationship didn't work out. Apparently he sang and played it to her in a hotel room after he had just written it. But at that point the relationship couldn't be resolved. I didn't read about that until recent in years . It makes that song even more touching. And anytime I hear Judy herself I feel touched and moved.

John Jensen Seriously?? I'd beg to differ..think The Beatles, namely John singing lead might be the definitive version!! But love Judy Collins, just can't say this is definitive version!!!
First time I've heard this version and its good but it doesn't flow quite like the Beatles version. The Beatles version comes across as retrospective look at life whereas this version is just a singer with a great voice singing a song.

I just stumbled over this for the first time. I fell in love with Ms. Collins version like I did in 1965 when I heard it for the first time by The Beatles. Jose Feliciano cut a nice cover of this too.
Judy's studio version is better because I think the guitar was tuned differently. While she did not write it, I sometimes think about the Steven Stills "Judy Blue Eyes" Suite. His was in 1969 so I think it is likely unrelated, but I just thought about it. In my opinion Judy Collins' cover of this Beatles song is the BEST, and even better than the original.

Why would people give this song/artist a thumbs down? Great song and lyrics
Changing the lyrics and melody
It is a beautiful, timeless song.
They thought it was britney spears, yuck.
Not a sensible comment. The words are unchanged and the melody is slightly adapted to suit the voice (as a melody always should be).

There are places I'll remember
All my life, though some have changed
Some forever, not for better
Some have gone, and some remain
All these places had their moments
With lovers and friends, I still can recall
Some are dead, and some are living
In my life, I've loved them all
But of all these friends and lovers
There is no one compares with you
And these memories lose their meaning
When I think of love as something new
Though I know I'll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I'll often stop and think about them
In my life, I'll love you more
Though I know I'll never lose affection
For people and things that went before
I know I'll often stop and think about them
In my life I'll love you more
In my life I'll love you more
