I remember listening to Melanie on the radio as a kid, I have her 1970 hit single "Lay Down (Candles in the Rain )" on a compilation album. She was, (& still is), a wonderful & lovely singer. She looked like Linda Ronstadt.
Ed seemed very enthused and smitten with Melanie, gave a very pumped up introduction acknowledging her as a songwriter and not just another teenger act...a very poweful voice and "groovy" style. And you had a wonderful smile.
Fred...nonsense...Melanie is awesome still, decades later...but if you really try to listen and appreciate there are many fine musicians today...I,m 60s era...I,ve learned to appreciate music from every era...don,t believe in short changing myself.
I saw Melanie in the summer of1970 when she sang In The Summertime to open the fabulous Strawberry Fields Festival in Ontario, Canada. It was a glorious sunny afternoon and she made it one of the most glorious moments of my life. May her spirit live on.

A little sad & funny to hear Ed call her "Ruby" near the end during the applause... My guess is dementia of some kind, but he still knew a great artist when he heard one. Melanie rocks!

CBS should have allowed the show to run until the 25th anniversary when he began to host it in June 1948. Sullivan wanted the show to go at least 25 years then retire it in 1973. Still need a few CD's of the new stuff. You have given the world so many gifts of song, it is amazing! I can't travel to New York to see you if you play live, but I have discovered a wonderful "new" singer "Shelby Earl" here in Seattle that has made 4 albums now.
